After that I’m off to Thailand with my good friend Sam of Tokyoplastic to speak at Bangkok CG plus 2009. I think its on the 29th July… will check.

Anyone in Berlin: PSS is playing in the outdoor cinema at the Volkspark Friedrichshain on Friday 17th July at 9.30pm. Unfortunately I will miss it, but if you please take a picture and send it my way!

I contributed an extended article on the aesthetics of Please Say Something for it. It’s mainly adapted from my larger essay on animation aesthetics which I’ve given talks about over the last year or so, which for the moment will probably stay unreleased. Right now I’d rather practice than preach… anyway this might be of interest if you’d like to know more about the theory side of my work.

Thank you all for sending in your showreels after my post a couple weeks ago, I couldn’t answer everyone but there were so many talented people out there I will be sure to keep them all on file for next thing. I know it’s tough for freelancers right now so I hope you’re all holding it down until the industry picks up again.

I’m also happy to announce that after years of working in the corner of various bedrooms I finally have an office! The nice people at Partizan had some extra space in their new Berlin HQ and I’m currently renting it out. A big thank you to Moritz & Jordan for setting this up.

In other news you can now stalk my every move on Twitter, I’ve revamped various parts of the site and uploaded some of my work on Son of Rambow. I will be doing a general talk about my work at the DCA in Scotland on Saturday, then a screening/Q&A at Bafta on Tuesday (tickets here). Hope to see you there!

Here was the first test I did before any brief, it wasn’t used in the end but it’s my personal favourite. You can view this with red/cyan glasses, the gun’s distortion is in true 3d space.

This is a composite of some of the other ones I did, more in line with M.I.A’s aesthetic. (unfortunately compression kind of kills the flat colors/strobe effects). Since these were rendered in extreme widescreen I compressed them both into one video. The left audio channel is for the song “World Town” and the right the final version of “Bang”. Listen to them separately with headphones.

DENMARK

Thank you again to everyone who came to my talks at Lynfabrikken and Republikken in Denmark, and especially to Lasse Schuleit for setting it all up. Both places are totally amazing workspaces for creative people, I wish there was an equivalent in Berlin or London.

The DVD is an edition of 100 and includes a commentary track by Pictoplasma founders Peter & Lars, in which they analyze the design and storytelling. I also included a lot of extra images I captured just for the DVD, showing the process of developing it and what the sets looked like. I’m usually against an explicit “making of”, they usually destroy a film for me (and seem a bit presumptuous for shorts!) but the extra features should enrich it and be mainly of interest to others making films in 3d. I’ve included some other short films and a bunch of extras.

The price is 20 EUR including delivery and (while stocks last) some little cards from the film and my work. Order yours now!

Why sell a dvd of something that’s online? It’s naturally my goal to make my work free and available for everyone. I only decided to make these for sale after several people requested to donate to me after seeing the film. I personally feel weird having a donate button on the site, so instead you can contribute to the cause but have a rare souvenir to take with you!

FLATPACK FESTIVAL

I also just had a great weekend at the Flatpack festival in Birmingham. For such a new festival it has such brilliant enthusiasm and variety. It was the first time I got to present some of the new theory I’ve been writing and got to meet the wonderful Jim Le Fevre and his zoetropes, it’s amazing how appealing it is to see animation happen before your eyes. Thank you Ian & Pip!

PSS DVDs

Thank you to everyone who bought the now-completed PSS dvds at Pictoplasma! I’m making them all here on my noisy printer so there will be a little delay on getting them online to order, but thank you all who emailed requesting them. I will be in Denmark for 2 talks/workshops next weekend, I’m still figuring out the format of it all. The first will be in Lynfabrikken in Aarhus on Tuesday 31st, the second at Republikken in Copenhagen on the 1st of April. There might be one or two more but nothing else confirmed yet, I will update here if there are changes, I look forward to visiting and meeting you all!
