Our history as two couples has very much been intertwined since we first struck up a friendship five years ago. We bonded over sushi, wine and hockey games; first as newly dating couples… and now, today, as two married couples. For this reason, the story of Chris and Vanisha’s wedding is one that is very close to our hearts.

When it was time for Chris to propose to Vanisha (and we all agreed it was time!), Daniel helped Chris pick out a ring, that we then brought with us to Mexico where we were all headed for our own wedding. And on the eve of our wedding, by the ocean where Daniel and I would exchange vows the very next day, Chris asked Vanisha to marry him. When she said yes, we had the great honor to be the first ones to congratulate them and share a very tearful hug with them.

When it came to planning their own big day, Chris and Vanisha knew what they wanted: a small, intimate affair in Napa Valley, a place they had always dreamt of visiting. Despite the painful task of limiting their guest list to just their parents, their sisters and Daniel and I, they stuck to their dream wedding plan.

There was something so beautiful about watching them exchange vows in the carriage house at the Charles Krug winery – a room big enough to hold hundreds of people, yet only had 8 people bearing witness to this special moment. We mused that there was just enough space to hold the invisible presence of their many friends and family who were absent.

Sharing their tiny yet magical wedding days was one of the most special moments of our lives. And, well, needless to say, we just love them so much.

From inside the stunning candlelit ruins of San Jose el Viejo, on the night of her wedding, Kristiaan told her guests that she and Lionel chose La Antigua, Guatemala because they wanted their guests to have an experience. I can’t think of a better way of describing this wedding… what an experience it was.

Daniel and I spent 3 whole weeks in Guatemala, first taking a Spanish class (y nuestro Espanol es mucho mejor ahora!) and then just taking in this incredible place. Slowly but surely, Kristiaan, Lionel and their wedding guests started to arrive. With every new arrival, the group got better and better; their families warm and welcoming, their friends an absolute blast. And Kristiaan and Lionel, well, we just adore them (they are also wedding photographers so they are obviously good people!). By the end of it, we had several sincere invitations to family dinners and one honorary adoption from Kristiaan’s mom (hi mama Karen!).

To kick off their five day wedding experience, Kristiaan and Lionel organized The Amazing Race Antigua, a treasure hunt around the city. Daniel is proud to say that he led his team to victory (I’m still bitter about my team’s loss…) and the event certainly brought everyone closer together, competitive spirits and all (I am perhaps referring to myself a little…). The eve of the wedding day began with an early morning volcano hike and ended with a salsa dance party with entertainment by Ignacio Perez Borrel, one of the original members of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club. After the wedding we followed Kristiaan, Lionel, and a few of their close friends to beautiful Lake Atitlan where we explored remote villages, feasted on homemade meals, and napped in hammocks overlooking the vast lake.

But also, of course, there was the wedding day. Filled to the brim with joy, love, and beauty, it was impossible not to get completely immersed in it all. We were spoiled with the magical combination of emotion and stunning location. La Antigua is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited… so much so that I can’t find the words to do it or this wedding justice, so have a glimpse at their full slideshow instead, by clicking HERE.

We first met Nadine a year ago, when she attended a workshop we were giving in Toronto. It is easy to hit it off with a fellow wedding photographer, and it was particularly easy to love Nadine. She has an enthusiasm for the art of photography and an eagerness to learn that is, quite simply, inspiring.

When Nadine found out that we were going to be in Austin for another workshop, she immediately contacted Daniel and I for a portrait session with her husband Andy. We had never met him before but knew we would hit it off because 1. We already loved Nadine, 2. They live in Austin, one the coolest cities we’ve ever been to, 3. He is an improv actor and teacher, and 4. They are foodies like us. So on a Friday afternoon, we got together with Nadine and Andy and went on a best of Austin tour, complete with stops at the Austin mural, the “i love you so much” graffiti wall, and a classic airstream park. In between stops, Nadine and Andy treated us to some of Austin’s best food trucks… and oh what a feast it was (I’m currently craving the pork buns from The Liberty…)! We cannot wait to return to Austin for more!

Following an engagement session in Miami, we made the beautiful drive down to the Florida Keys for Carolina and Norman’s Key Largo wedding. Having met them in New York last summer, we already knew that they are the sweetest, most adorable couple. Carolina is so beautiful, she looks like a doll that I just wanted to photograph all day long!

Norman is Nicaraguan, Carolina is Columbian, and they met while living in Florida. Naturally, their wedding was a sweet celebration of their relationship, with many opportunities for us to brush up on our Spanish, and included lots of dancing! Carolina put so much care into making every detail of their wedding just perfect, including some adorable Scrabble name cards for every guest, that we are now proudly displaying in our office.

Their wonderful friends and families made us feel right at home the whole weekend, and we are both utterly infatuated with their hilarious English bulldog, Jordan.

Carolina and Norman, thank you for choosing us to document your oh-so sweet wedding!

It is always a little nerve wracking to meet a couple/clients for the first time, but for some reason, we were particularly nervous about meeting Heather and Robbie. I think it’s because we will be spending a lot of time with them; between their engagement session, rehearsal dinner and wedding, so there was a lot riding on this relationship. But the moment we met them at the Viscaya gardens in Miami, all our worries disappeared. The longer we walked around this beautiful location with this beautiful couple, the more we liked them.

There are few couples who can keep up with us, but Heather and Robbie kept the energy up for 3 whole hours - props to Heather who did it all in heels AND with her mom and sister standing watch! These two brought the sexy for us, despite having tourists and family members as an audience, and for that they earned our utmost respect!

We cannot wait to return to Miami for their wedding this summer at the W hotel. In the meantime, here are a few of our favorites from their engagement session.

Laughter. That is Christine and Vik’s 3 day wedding celebration in Mexico summed up in one word. Nothing, not even when a rainy sky pushed their beach reception into one of the resort’s restaurants, could stop these two from having a good time. In fact, after a very wet Indian ceremony, they just took a dip in the pool, with Christine still in her very heavy sari.

The beautiful Dreams Riviera in Cancun played host to the multi-day affair, from the Vatna, where their enthusiastic guests smeared Vik with turmeric paste (mustard also found it’s way in there), to the Baraat, where Vik made his grand entrance on a horse. From start to finish, this wedding was an absolutely joy. We broke our record for the most photos we’ve ever taken and had the time of our lives.

The day after their wedding day (after Christine and Vik generously sent us to the spa for massages), we took a rocky ferry ride to Isla Mujeres for some portraits. We had suggested this location for its local Mexican feel, rocky cliffs, and proximity to Cancun, but having never been there ourselves, we were crossing our fingers that this location would be worth the trip… and it most certainly was!

Christine and Vik, we are so happy to have had the pleasure of documenting your epic wedding. We look forward to travelling to India with you sometime in the next few years!

As always, you can browse through our favorites above, and we invite you to take a look at their full slideshow by clicking HERE.

Last month we had the tremendous opportunity of going to Zanzibar, in Eastern Africa, to photograph a local fashion designer’s upcoming collection (photos from that coming in the new year). We figured that since we were lucky enough to be sent to that part of the world, we should make the most of it and do a bit of volunteer work in rural Kenya – something we both felt very strongly about – and while we were at it, we should go on a safari and try and spot some animals. My parents and my sister Arielle decided to tag along with us, since this was an opportunity that they too did not want to miss.

We all knew this would be the trip of a lifetime, but I don’t think anything could have prepared us for just how much this would touch our lives. We were mesmerized by Zanzibar’s Stone Town; a veritable maze of streets and shops, with deep cultural and historical roots. But it was Kenya that really stole our hearts; in particular, the 47 smiling little faces at the Nakuru Baby Orphanage were we stayed for a few days.

The orphanage is run by Mission in Action, a truly incredible organization that is operated by an Australian couple. It is a big happy family, consisting of 47 (and counting) abandoned or orphaned children. Because there are so many of them, they don’t get to go out much, so during our time there, we took groups of them on various outings, including a visit to the Kenana Knitting village, a special lunch in town, and a very exhausting trip to the pool. But mostly, it is the children who spoiled us. There was an abundance of hugs, kisses, hair petting (they like our soft hair!), funny questions (to Daniel: “Is Davina your wife? Do you kiss him?”), and so much love that I swear our hearts felt physically fuller at the end of the day. MIA is very open about the children’s backgrounds, some of which are downright horrific, so we had the chance to learn all about the kids while we were there. To look down at the child who is sitting on your lap and realize that this is the one who was severely beaten by their parents… or raped as a baby by men who believed they would be cured of AIDS… or left to die by the side of the road just a few hours into their life… or bore witness to their mother’s murder at the hands of their own father… It is hard to find words to describe the feelings that came over us. Yet despite what they have gone through, they are all still just children. Those with traumatizing pasts have come a very long way, and while the traces of their experiences are still visible at times, for the most part, these are all very happy children.

While volunteering at Mission in Action, we took a few trips to local villages where we gave out thousands of biscuits to some energetic village kids, and brought bags of flour and sugar (both hard and expensive to come by) to donate to some local women. The heartfelt gratitude we received when giving these women such a simple gift is something that I will never forget. Arielle was similarly moved when we gave our leftover lunch to some local street kids. Their enthusiasm for food that we would not have hesitated to throw away back home, had her in tears. We also had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Rabbit; affectionately nicknamed so because she has fifteen children, who all share a mud hut no bigger than 300 square feet. (Mrs. Rabbit is the woman in our opening photo, pictured at the entrance of her home with eleven of her children)

After very tearful goodbyes and promises to ourselves that we will return soon, we headed to the Masai Mara, the Kenyan side of the Serengeti. It was chilly, rainy, and incredibly muddy, but we still had the pleasure of spotting many animals, including elephants, zebras, gazelles, hippos, lions, cheetahs, and giraffes.

Since returning home, we have not stopped thinking about life in Kenya. Not a day goes by where we don’t think about the kids, laugh about an adorable thing they said, hear their joyful giggles, or just plain miss them. Our time in Kenya gave us the most precious gift we’ve ever received: perspective. I can tell you that our post-Kenya home is one with a lot less complaining, and a whole lot more appreciating.

We’ve made the very easy decision to keep working with Mission in Action and to do what we can to help them out from a distance. They are involved in many community projects outside the orphanage, on top of running a second orphanage nearby. We saw firsthand just how every penny of sponsors’ money goes to the exact cause that they wish to contribute to, so we feel confident that this is an organization to get on board with. We are currently working on getting each of the kids their own backpack in which to keep their very few personal belongings. These kids share absolutely everything, but the few personal objects that they might have (a toy sent by a sponsor, or even just an empty water bottle that they latched onto) usually gets lost in the mix or broken. For this reason, we want to send each child their own backpack, personalized with their name on it of course, to put the special things that are all their own. Until January 1st, every dollar from every print sold in our ETSY SHOP will go towards this project. You can also make a donation to the project by emailing us, or donate directly to the orphanage HERE and make sure to read about some of the projects currently going on in the community. We will also be sharing portraits of each and every one of the children at the orphanage, so keep an eye out for those on our FACEBOOK PAGE.

There are so many individuals and families around the world, both at home and abroad, who need help. This is one community that has touched our own hearts and that has given us the simple yet precious gift of appreciation. If you can help, this community or another, please do. And please do take a moment to be thankful for all that you have, especially over the holidays. I know we will.

Many couples fantasize about ditching the headache of wedding planning and running away to get married… but there are very few who actually pull it off. Sarah and Kyle knew they weren’t the big white wedding kind of people, so they chose to tell no one, and elope to Quebec City.

When we caught up with Sarah and Kyle on the big day, almost one hour before they were scheduled to meet up, Sarah was sitting in her room at the iconic Chateau Frontenac, ready to get started, and Kyle was already pacing the lobby, ready to see his bride for the first time. With no one there to hold up the schedule, this notoriously punctual couple’s wedding day actually ran early; completely unheard of in our experience!

It was a tremendous honor to bear witness to this incredibly romantic ceremony on the Plains of Abraham, overlooking the Fleuve St-Laurent and it was a pleasure to wander the old city, exploring charming nooks and crannies. Sarah and Kyle, thank you for choosing our vision to document your wedding for your friends and family to see, and for you to relive.

It was oh-so easy for us to fall in love with Ashley and Andreas’ wedding. For one thing, it had many similarities to our own wedding, including the exact same guest count. It also took place in one of our favorite locations, the Cape, which was the perfect midpoint for their family and friends who came from Germany and California. And, well, let’s just say it was not difficult to be captivated by their stunning good looks and their impecable taste. Ashley’s vintage Monique Lhuillier dress and sequined flapper-inspired number were both equally swoon-worthy, and even Daniel had to comment on Andreas’ handsome German features!

But I think that the best part of this wedding was the magic. On what was an otherwise rainy and gloomy weekend, we experienced one of the most sudden, unexpected, and beautiful sunsets we’ve ever seen, just as Ashley and Andreas were heading out for a post-ceremony row on the pond. It lasted exactly 13 minutes, just enough time for them to spend some quiet time together on the rowboat and for us to grab a few scene setting portraits. There is no other way to describe it, other than magical.
