In the seventh conversation (διάλεξις - controversy) edited by Professor Khoury, the emperor touches on the theme of the holy war. The emperor must have known that surah 2, 256 reads: "There is no compulsion in religion". According to the experts, this is one of the suras of the early period, when Mohammed was still powerless and under threat. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur'an, concerning holy war.

Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the "Book" and the "infidels", he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness, a brusqueness which leaves us astounded, on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached".

The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. "God", he says, "is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably (σὺν λόγω) is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death...".

This part of the lecture has, of course, been blown out of proportion by many, and have been used as an excuse by many Muslims to riot and threaten the Pope for making "comments offensive to Islam" - all that for just a quotation.

Not acting reasonably - not acting with logos - is contrary to the nature of God, and violence is incompatible with the nature of God. We Christians certainly have committed many violent deeds in the past; however at least we have God as our standard, and that we did wrong when we acted violently. At least, we have the Fifth Commandment.

"... But for Muslim teaching, God is absolutely transcendent. His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of rationality. Here Khoury quotes a work of the noted French Islamist R. Arnaldez, who points out that Ibn Hazm went so far as to state that God is not bound even by his own word, and that nothing would oblige him to reveal the truth to us. Were it God's will, we would even have to practise idolatry."

Many Muslims reacted to this statement with treats of violence. The first thing I thought when I read of these reactions was: "Argumentum ad baculum all over again? Is this the only type of argument they know?"

Appeals to the threat of force is of no profit. When The da Vinci Code came out, sure, we Catholics protested, but we did not threaten Dan Brown with death for mocking our beliefs. Instead, we replied with refutations of his positions.

The decisive question is this: Was the Pope's statement about Islam true? Does Islam definitely teach that God is not bound up by rationality? Is the statement "Appeals to the threat of force is of no profit" true for them in the first place, as it is true for us? As Fr. Joseph Fessio, SJ has recently said:

"And if the response from Islam is violence, then must we not ask precisely the question raised by Benedict: Is this violence an aberration that is inconsistent with genuine Islam (as similar violence by Christians would be an aberration inconsistent with genuine Christianity)? Or is it justifiable on the basis of Islam's image of God as absolutely transcending all human categories, even that of rationality? And if the response to this question is violence, then the question has been answered existentially, and rational dialogue has been repudiated (emphasis mine)".

More in Part 2...

Only people who are insane would do that... or people burning with Faith

From Mike Aquilina:

"Yet the Fathers had enormous success in youth and young-adult ministry. Back then I thought she would finish her master's degree in materials science and engineering, then become a nun.

When she told me that she will not be finishing her degree at all, a verse came to mind: "Whoever wishes to be My disciple must forget everything, take up his cross and follow me."

She had sacrificed the possibility of a high - paying job in entering the convent. I pray she would hold fast onto her vocation.

As much as we would miss her, I am happy for her and her choice to give up everything to follow the Lord. This song was composed by Filipino Salesian priest, and so we learned it, being members of a Salesian - administered parish in the Diocese of San Pablo, Laguna.

A rough line-by-line translation of the song (which is in Filipino) follows:

Totus tuus, Maria.
I am wholly yours, my Mother.
All I hold, all of my life,
all of these are yours.

Every step in my life,
to you, Mary, I commend.
A little wish in my life:
This only offering to you
now receive;
Happiness is found in you.

Totus tuus, Maria.
I am wholly yours, my Mother.
All I hold, all of my life,
all of these are yours.

Wholly Yours! Totus tuus!

When I had grown up and looked at the score's song, I foung the following dedication: "Sa ala-ala mo, Jaypee 2" ("To your memory, Jaypee 2"). Back then I wondered who this "Jaypee" was. And then it hit me: Pope John Paul 2's motto had been "Totus Tuus" (Wholly Yours). Now Fr. Robleza composed this song around the 1980's. Maybe he composed this at the time of the failed assasination attempt...

*****

I first heard the name of Pope John Paul II during the preparations for the World Youth Day held in Manila in 1995. That was the time we were taught in our Catechism classes, young as we are, the distinctive mark of the Catholic Church: fidelity to Rome and to its Bishop, our Holy Father (or Santo Papa, as we called him).

During that World Youth Day I saw Pope John Paul on TV. What I can remember is that he was smiling, and that he looked young and strong for a Pope. I admit, I was drawn to him because of the ease he gets along with the youth. I was drawn to how he spoke our language, the language of us youth. I was drawn to his message of us the youth being the hope of the Church (which resonated with Dr. Jose Rizal's statement that the youth are the hope of the our country). His message especially resonated with us members of a Salesian parish (the Salesian fathers focus on the youth as their charism).

I didn't have a thought at the time that there is so much more to this man than just charisma and friendliness to the youth. It was only after, with the momentum imparted by a Life - in - the - Spirit seminar, I started reading up materials on the Internet about the Faith, that I started to get a glimpse of what lay beneath the charisma: a staunch defense of the Faith against the forces of immorality and the culture of death, and a willingness, indeed a desire, to heal the schisms that rent Christianity apart. I also glimpsed a firmness on the things that matter, especially on morality.

His death handed me the realization: We are really just nomads in this world, as then - Cardinal Ratzinger said. Because of his death, I also realized that he had left a vast amount of works on theology, philosophy and ethics - works that await reading and reflecting upon by the faithful. Unfortunately, even now I have not read much of them...

*****

Exactly one year ago Pope John Paul II died. His life was truly an example of Totus Tuus: an commendation of his whole life to the Blessed Mother. More so, this Totus Tuus is adressed not just to Mary but ultiamtely to God. Pope John Paul's life was an example of whole self - offering, even of the sufferings he endured years before he died. May I, too, take up his example, an image of the example of Christ, whose whole life, death and resurrection is a perfect self-offering, a holy oblation to the Father.

Pope John Paul II, while I miss you, I hope and pray that you have been brought by the Lord into the True Eternal City, the new City of Jerusalem, where angels and saints worship and cry unceasingly, "Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts!" Please pray for us left here. Please pray for us youth, who are always in danger of going astray. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto him, o Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.

For You are the resurrection and the life and the repose of the soul of your servant John Paul who has fallen asleep, o Christ our God, and to you we send up glory, with Your eternal Father, and Your all holy, good and life-creating Spirit, now, and forever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Pope John Paul the Great, pray for us!

Photo Source: The Holy See

This is the cup of My Blood, the New and Everlasting Covenant...

I found this gem while digging around. The representation of God, His mysterious presence, passes between the halves of the animals. The English phrases I could think of like "...That's too bad...", "...It's such a shame...", and the like do not do justice to the word.

Maybe the thing that is missing is the feeling, or feelings, conveyed by the user of the word. We Filipinos usually use it, for example, when something (an event, for example) or someone (a competitor, for example) does not reach up to the standard (or to what could be possible), and we cannot do a single thing about it. "Sayang..." is the only word we could say. The word can also convey a feeling of mild frustration and/or sadness at something which could be better, and yet is not, sometimes on purpose. Again, the feeling is that I cannot do anything to change it, either because it is done, or because I am too far away.

Now this word is the only one I could say when I read in one of the forums I frequent that the parish priest of one of the posters would suggested that they sing the Song of Zion setting (?) of the Paschal Preconium (the Exultet) (because it is short), and that they use the setting of the Litany used in one of the dioceses in our country (which has five saints for each invocation).

What I cannot see is why would people settle for the least (and the easiest) that could be licitly done, when they could do more (I am thinking here of the use of the short version of the Exultet, the near universal use of Anaphora II, and the virtually-nonexistent use of the chants of the Graduale Romanum, which are actually the first option in choosing liturgical songs). The most common explanation I hear (or not hear): "The people have many more things to do after the Mass, let's not delay them".

I'm sorry, but have we really lost what it means to worship at the Holy Mass? Is the solemn worship of the One True God by his Bride just something that needs to be gotten over with? Maybe I just answered my own question...

Sometimes I cannot help but think, "Is this really a consequence of my country having a Catholic majority? That such wonderful things such as the Mass are taken for granted?" Sometimes I cannot help but feel envious for the converts to the Faith; they have such burning zeal. Without them, I do not know whether I would take the Faith as seriously as now. And sometimes I cannot help but say, "I wish all of us Catholics take as our personal motto: Zeal for your house consumes me like a fire!"

Now I am very thankful to the Lord that the situation here in the Church in the Philippines is not as bad as what I read as happening in the States. The homilies here still speak of sin, punishment, grace, and forgiveness and Church teachings. However I am afraid that, while we Filipinos are strong in doctrine, we are weak in discipline; that we do not see the connection between the teachings which have been handed to us and the things we must do as Christians, especially during the Mass; we do not see the connection between the lex credendi, on one hand, and the lex orandi, on the other. For example, holding of hands during the Lord's Prayer is practically - universal here - a gesture virtually unknown here around 20 or so years ago, according to my parish priest.

To the bishops, priests, and all those involved in Church ministries in my country: Please. Please give fidelity to Church discipline a try. Yes, we may (God forbid) lose many people to the "born-agains", with their "exciting" praise and worship bands and services, look at the gain in fervor the faithful would have. And please, do not listen to the mutterings, the whisperings of "The Mass I attended is boooorrrrriiinnnggggg! I don't get anything from it." Please go against the flow, the path involving the least resistance.

Follow-up on Abdul Rahman

Abdul Rahman has been set free! Now my fascination just grew when I discovered that even the Offertory (Ave Maria) and the Communion (Ecce virgo concipiet) for the Annunciation were taken from the same Fourth Sunday of Advent. The only propers that do not match are the Gradual (replaced by Tollite portas, taken from the Monday between December 17 and 24), and the Alleluia (replaced by the Tract Audi, filia, taken from the Commons).

This Introit, Rorate caeli, is for me forever associated with that hauntingly beautiful Advent hymn of the same name.

Turn your fierce anger from us, O Lord;
and remember not our sins for ever.
Your holy cities have become a desert,
Zion a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation;
our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised you.

We have sinned and become like one who is unclean;
we have all withered like a leaf,
and our iniquities like the wind have swept us away.
You have hidden your face from us;
and abandoned us to our iniquities.

You are my witnesses, says the Lord;
and my servant whom I have chosen;
that you may know me and believe me.
I myself am the Lord, and none but I can deliver;
what my hand holds, none can snatch away.

Comfort my people, comfort them;
my salvation shall not be delayed.
I have swept your offences away like a cloud;
fear not, for I will save you.
I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Redeemer.

God has heard our cry, the cry of a people sinful individually and collectively, a people who has realized that it cannot buy God's favor and pardon of its sins.

God has heard our cry, our admission that we can do nothing, and that in our hands alone the world, and even many of His temples, has become a wasteland, not just physically but also spiritually, for "we have sinned and become like one who is unclean".

God has heard our cry, our desert experiences, our experiences of spiritual dryness, our souls' dark nights, and sent His only Son. Only in Him does our desert experiences, our experiences of spiritual dryness, our dark nights, our whole Lenten journey, make sense, for desert experiences, dark nights of the soul, this Lent, cannot be understood apart from Christ, He who forgives our sins and comforts us, and He who underwent the ultimate desert experience nailed to the Cross. Only in Him can the wastelands we have caused bear fruit once again.

*****

Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear: and forget thy people and thy father's house.
And the king shall greatly desire thy beauty; for he is the Lord thy God, and him they shall adore.- Psalm 44:11-12 (Douai-Reims)

Today our Blessed Mother totally abandoned any thought she may or may not have had for her own benefit.

Today she "forgot her people and her father's house", so to speak, in order to say "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to your word."

Today she gave herself up completely to the Lord's will, whatever may happen in her life.

Her Fiat made our salvation possible; her Fiat made possible the marvelous things "which the prophets longed to see". In her Fiat to the Lord's Divine Word, taken in unity with the Word's Amen to the Father and the Agape of the Holy Spirit, we find our guiding principle for Lent, indeed for all times, such that our fasts, our works of charity, our disciplines, our penitential acts, would not go in vain: a life lived as an Amen to the Father, a Fiat to His Divine Word, and an Agape in the Holy Spirit.

Hail, O you, through whom Joy will shine forth!
Hail, O you, through whom the curse will disappear!
Hail, O Restoration of the Fallen Adam!
Hail, O Redemption of the Tears of Eve!
Hail, O Peak above the reach of human thought!
Hail, O Depth even beyond the sight of angels!
Hail, O you who have become a Kingly Throne!
Hail, O you who carry Him Who Carries All!
Hail, O Star who manifest the Sun!
Hail, O Womb of the Divine Incarnation!
Hail, O you through whom creation is renewed!
Hail, O you through whom the Creator becomes a Babe!
Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure!

- Akathist to the the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary, First Oikos

Archbishop Rosales is now a Cardinal

Thank you, Lord for granting us another Cardinal.
