Review: the iFold - a stand with flair

Intro

If you read some of my other reviews you will notice that there were quite some few reviews about notebook stands. Today another stand will join the reviews. It's the iFold manufactured by Matias Corporation.

Design

The design of the iFold is very unique to say the least. It's a portable stand that will lift your Macbook quite a bit and its construction/design is something I haven't seen yet. Usually a stand is either very portable and doesn't lift your Macbook that much or it does lift the Macbook to considerable height but is not really portable. With the iFold though the creators managed to combine both aspects by having a very smart mechanism that literally folds the stand to portable size.

Everyday use

I have been testing the iFold for almost 3 weeks now and I must admit that I am very surprised how much more comfortable it makes me work with my Macbook. At home it raises the Macbook to a perfect height so if you are an external monitor user it will make it more comfortable to work with both monitors (external, Macbook display). Despite the look the stand is very stable and the rubber pads on the iFold will prevent your Macbook from falling off the stand. The iFold also had a nice side effect on my desk which was more space. Since with the iFold you have a lot of free space between the Macbook and the desk I now just put my external HDs under my Macbook and when I'm finished working I can also put my external keyboard under it to free up my desk. If you are someone that uses the Macbook a lot on the road you can also use the iFold while sitting in the bus or train. Just use it in the folded state as a "protector from burns caused by your Macbook". It's pretty comfortable to have the iFold on your legs and than the Macbook on it than just the Macbook (the Macbook can get rather hot at the bottom enclosure).

My thoughts on the iFold

So what is my final verdict on this product? I'd say this is one of the most beautiful stands design wise. The black shiny frame with the steel parts looks very exclusive and shows how much Matias cares about using good materials. The manufacturing on this stand is superb also. After three weeks of heavy use (folding and unfolding the stand) I can safely say that this stand won't fall apart that easily. What I liked most about this stand was the following aspect: it lifts the Macbook to a very comfortable height and in doing so also provides more space to store stuff (e.g. external HDs, keyboard, mouse, tablet, etc.). You can compared to other stands store a lot of gadgets under the Macbook when you don't use them and clean up your desk from clutter. It's also usable when you are on the road but in my opinion the strength of this stand lies in home use. If you are looking for a unique stand that gives your desk and Macbook setup more flair you definitely should try this stand.

mozy.com - online backups for mac users also

So I have read a few blog entries about the online backup service mozy and that it got updated for Mac users also. Since it seems to be a very good service and it gets hyped in various places on the net I decided to give it a spin. I have signed up for a free account that gives you a storage of 2GB and downloaded the software also. I am still a bit skeptical to upload private things to an online backup service so I just selected some folders with random files in it to test out the software and the speed of mozy's online backup service. First of all the software that you need will be running in the menubar and it is very easy to select the stuff that you want mozy to backup (there are quite a lot of predefined backup rules in mozy which makes backing up a lot easier). Then there is another section where you can select custom folders that you want to be backupped also.

I have already selected what I wanted to be backupped this weekend but had trouble connecting to the servers. But today I was able to connect to the mozy servers and am currently trying my first backup. Currently, I am backing up about 250 MB of random data and according to the software it will take a bit over an hour till the process will be finished.

I guess I will post about the backup once it is finished.
Up till now I am very impressed about the simplicity that mozy offers.

If you are a boot camp user I think this software is a must have. In combination with the ntfs3G drivers it allows you to write ntfs formatted partitions also.

Review: Bodyguardz full body protection kit for the Macbook

Intro

Regular readers of my blog know that I have reviewed a couple of protective skins for the Macbook, which include Shieldzone's invisible shield and DeinDesign's DesignSkins. Today I'd like to add yet another product that promises to protect the Macbook: The Bodyguardz.

Package Contents

The package that you will receive when ordering the full kit includes a Bodyguard for the palm rest, the trackpad, the clicker on the trackpad, the bottom case and the top case. On top you get two bottles of solution that you need to use to apply the shields.

Material

The material used for the Bodyguardz is different from the invisible shield and the DesignSkins. It is neither made of vinyl nor that material used for the invisible shield. It is apparently a material that is used by automobile tuners. It is very thin and in my opinion it is the clearest skin that I have seen so far.

Design of the Bodyguardz

The design of the Bodyguardz is also quite different from what I have seen so far. First of all the palm rest Bodyguard covers the whole partition below the keyboard (it is only one skin). The trackpad and clicker skins look just like other products. What really is different are the top and bottom skins though. The top skins not only covers the top case but the little side portions (edges) also, so that only a very small part of the top case is actually unprotected. However, there is a cutout for the Apple logo, which I frankly didn't quite get since the Bodyguardz are transparent. I personally would have liked the skins without the cutout even more. The bottom skin is also worth mentioning. It covers the bottom case plus the edges also (the portion where the ports are located and the slot in portion excluded). I hope I was able to describe the design of the Bodyguardz well enough for you to get the idea. In one sentence the Bodyguardz do protect more of the Macbook than any other skin product that I have reviewed so far.

Application process

Now to the application process. Bodyguardz has a video on their site that gives customers a brief overview on how to apply the skins. However, in my experience the application of the skins is far more complicated than show in the clip. I truly suggest you do it with another person; especially the bottom skin was hard to apply. Anyways, in short there are three steps in applying the Bodyguardz. First, clean your Macbook (dust that is trapped beneath the skin just looks bad). Second, peel off the Bodyguard that you want to apply and spray it in with the solution (use rather more solution than less). Third, try to align the Bodyguardz as neat as possible and squeeze out the liquid beneath the skin out to the sides. When you have completed the three steps you need to let the Macbook rest for 12-24hrs so the remaining liquid can evaporate. Don't worry too much about the really small bubbles that you can't get out. Most of them will disappear after a couple of days.

My thoughts on the Bodyguardz

Now my personal thoughts about the Bodyguardz are positive. However, there are some points that I need to mention. Firstly, the application of the Bodyguardz is rather complicated (especially on the Macbook). The reason for this is, that the skins do not slide that well even with them being soaked in the solution. Secondly, because they do not slide that well it is truly hard to align them perfectly. That's why I recommend doing this with another person. It makes the aligning process a lot easier. Lastly, it is possible to try to align the skins multiple times but I suspect that doing so somehow stretches the skins after a while and makes them not fit perfectly (either that or I may have received a slightly miscut bottom bodyguard). Even though most of the points were aligned, in my case one just edge didn't align perfectly, so that I had cut that part out in the end. Now the good part: I truly like the fact that the Bodyguardz cover more of the Macbook than any other skin product I have seen so far. Personally, I would have loved to see the Apple logo covered also but it still covers more than the competition. Another great point is the clearness of these skins. It really is very transparent and you have to look twice to see the existence of the Bodyguardz. So my final conclusion of the Bodyguardz is: it is worth the money and it protects the Macbook very well. But keep in mind that the application of the skins may be trickier than other skins out there.

Einleitung

In der Serie von iPod-verwandten Produkttests werde ich heute die in-ear Kopfhörer der Firma Skullcandy: Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) vorstellen. Diese Kopfhörer sind in verschiedenen Farbvariationen erhältlich und es besteht die Möglchkeit zwischen 9mm und 11mm Lautsprechern zu wählen. Ich hatte das Glück, von Skullcandy die 11mm Version zu erhalten.

Paketinhalt

Im Paket enthalten ist eine EVA Tagetasche um die Kopfhörer zu verstauen. Es ist eine sehr stylische weisse Tasche mit dem hübschen Skullcandy Logo auf der Oberseite. Weiter werden 3 Paare semi-transparenter Aufsetzer mitgeliefert in den Größen: small, medium und large. Ich empfehele jedem die verschiedenen Größen auszuprobieren und diese auszusuchen, die gut passt und den besten Tragekomfort liefert. Im Paket sind auch noch zwei Sticker beigelegt, die man sich auf sein Skateboard oder seinen Ordner draufkleben kann sowie eine Lebenslange Garatie.

Design und Fertigung

Diese Kopfhörer sind wahrscheinlich die mit der besten Fertigung, die ich je gesehen habe. Man erkennt soviel Liebe zum Detail, was die Full Metal Jacket Ohrhöhrer nahezu perfekt macht. Das, was mich beim Aufmachen des Pakets sehr überrascht hat, war die integrierte Lautstärkeregelung. In der Produktbeschreibung wurde dies nirgends erwähnt und ich war sehr froh solch ein nützliches Feature zu sehen. Als ein iPod Tocuh Besitzer ist mir aufgefallen, dass die Funktion, die ich am meisten verwende: Die Lautstärekeregelung, sehr unzugänglich war: Man muss den iPod Touch rauskramen und unlocken um endlich die Lautstärke zu regeln. Mit dem eingebauten Lautstärkenregler der Kopfhörer reduziert sich diese nervige Prozedur lediglich auf das Verschieben ienes Reglers, der am Kopfhörerkabel nagebracht ist. Ich war zunächst ein wenig besorgt, dass das Gewicht dieses Reglers sich negativ zum Tragekomfort auswirken könnte. Nachdem ich dies beim Joggen getestet habe wurden meine Befürchtungen in keinster Weise bestätigt. Der Regler ist so leicht, dass man es kaum bemerkt. Also für die Leute, die kein Interesse an diesem Lautstärkeregler haben: Stören wird es euch bestimmt nicht. Die Kopfhörer selber sind in einem Gehäuse das aus einer Metalllegierung besteht, was sie dadurch sehr robust aber gleichzeitig leicht macht. Die Kabel sind weiß, was für iPod Besitzer bestimmt besonders interessant ist, das die FMJ's dadurch perfekt zum iPod Design passt. Die Kabel machen den Eindruck, dass sie sehr beständig sind und haben eine etwas Gummi-artige Textur (nicht elastisch). Dies Erschwert es manchmal die Kabel zu entwirren, da sie etwas mehr "aneinanderkleben". Der Audioanschluss ist vergoldet für den perfekten Sound und eine lange Lebensdauer. Das Skullcandy Logo ist auf den Kopfhörern und auf dem Laufstärkeregler aufgebracht (wie bereits oben erwähnt sind diese Kopfhörer bis ins letzte Detail durchdacht). Erhältlich sind die Kopfhörer in verschiedenen Farboptionen mit einem metallischen Look. Meine Meinung nach ist dieses Produkt mehr an die junge Generation gerichtt und ich habe gelesen, dass diese Marke besonders beliebt unter den Skateboardern ist.

Klangqualität

Was einem sofort beim verwenden dieser Kopfhörer auffällt ist die erstaunliche Klangqualität. Man erlebt ein 3D-artiges Gefühl und besonders der Bass hört sich sehr gut an. Genauso wie im vorherigem Kopfhörertest lud ich Lieder von verschiedenen Genres (Hip-Hop, Pop, RnB, Rock, Punk, Klassik,...) auf meinen iPod um festzustellen ob es einen Frequenzbereich gab, der besonders dominierte. Nachdem ich alle ausgewählten Lieder durchhörte hatte ich den Eindruck, dass diese Kopfhörer den Klang sehr gut wiedergaben. Ich sah keinen Grund spezielle EQ Einstellungen vorzunehmen um irgendwelche dominante Frequenzbereiche zu regulieren (man könnte sagen, dass die FMJ's etwas bassintensiv wären aber ich persönlich war sehr zufrieden mit ausgeschaltetem EQ). Da ich nun auch einen iPod Touch besitze testete ich natürlich auch den Klang während ich mit Filme, TV Serien und Video Podcasts angeschaut habe. Auch hier war ich begeistert von der Qualität die diese Kopfhörer lieferten. Die Stimmen hörte ich klar und deutlich und in den Action Szenen mit Explosionen hatte man das Gefühl neben einem Subwoofer zu sitzen. Die Full Metal Jacker Kopfhörer isolieren sehr gut Umgebungsgeräusche, was sie besonders in lauten Umgebungen, wie in Bussen, Zügen oder auf der Straße, nützlich macht. Im Vergleich zu den Standard Kopförern vom iPod muss ich meine Lautstärke nciht mehr so hochstellen was sich in einer längeren Akkulauzeit bemerkbar macht.

Fazit

Meiner Meinung nach sind diese Kopfhörer besonders interessant für die jüngere Generation: Die FMJ's liefern nicht nur exzellente Soundqualität, sondern sind durch das sehr durchdachte Design auch regelrechte Fashion-items. Als iPod Besitzer bin ich sehr zufrieden mit den weissen Kabeln und dem dazu passenden metallischen Look. Die sehr gute Geräuschisolierung erklärt auch, welshalb diese Kopfhörer so populär unter den Skatern ist. Der Preis von $59.95 (+ $20 für die 11mm Version) ist meiner Meinung nach gerechtfertig für die Qualität, die man erhält. Wenn man auf der Suche nach qualitativ hochwertigen Kopfhörern mit einem eizigartigen Style ist kann ich diese Kopfhörer nur weiterempfehlen. Eine iPhone Version mit integriertem Mikrofon ist auch erhältlich. Wie bereits oben erwähnt hab ich hier nur die 11mm Version getestet und kann daher keinen Vergleich zwischen der 9mm und der 11mm Variante liefern: Das Design wird identisch sein, jedoch vermute ich mal Unterschiede in der Klangqualität. Ich persönlich würde nach der 11mm Version zugreifenm da ich glaube, dass der $20 Aufpreis das wert ist.

Intro

Heute widme ich mich mal wieder meinem iPod, und habe in der letzten Zeit den iSkin duo getestet, eine Schutzhülle für den iPod nano. Immerhin, man will ja nicht nur guten Sound (V-moda Testbericht) sondern zudem soll der iPod ja auch gut geschützt werden, vor allem in Hinblick auf mögliche Kratzer und kleine Erschütterungen. Paketinhalt: Was erhält man, wenn man sich iSkin Duo bestellt hat? Nun, es handelt sich hierbei wirklich um ein ziemlich vollkommenes Paket. Zum einen ist natürlich eine Silikonhülle dabei ebenso wie eine Kunststoffeinrichtung für die Vorderseite des iPods. Das ist aber noch nicht alles. Ausserdem sind in dem Paket noch ein sehr gut beweglicher Gürtelclip zu finden, auch an ein Strap, um sich den iPod um den Hals zu hängen, wurde gedacht.

Design

Der Aufbau von iSkin Duo hat sich etwas verändert im Vergleich zum Vorgängermodell. Ich selber besitze noch den iSkin Duo für die erste Generation des iPods. Damals bestand das Konzept aus zwei kompletten Silikonschutzhüllen, die man übereinander über den iPod zog. Bei dem neuen Design ist zwar die Idee des doppelten Schutzes beibehalten worden, aber sie wurde modifiziert. Als erstes bekommt der iPod zum Schutz ebenfalls eine komplette Silikonhülle, die übrigens durchsichtig ist, erkennbar auf dem Photo. Der Gürtelclip aus Plastik ist schon an dem Silikon auf der Rückseite befestigt, allerdings kann er auch bequem entfernt werden. Nach Entfernung des Clips sind an den Befestigungsstellen zwei ungeschützte Stellen des iPods, aber diese kann man sehr einfach mit dem mitgelieferten Silikonzusatz verschliessen. Nachdem nun der iPod sicher in der Silikonhülle verstaut wurde, kommt die Kunststoffhülle an die Reihe, sie wird auf der Vorderseite des iPods angebracht. Sie bedeckt die gesamte Vorderseite, mit Ausnahme des Click wheels zur besseren Bedienung.

Schutz

Meiner Meinung nach ist der Schutz des iSkin duo fabelhaft. Die Silikonhülle erscheint sehr robust und strapazierfähig, außerdem bin ich beeindruckt über den perfekten Verschluss der Hülle auch für die Nutzer, die keinen Gürtelclip haben möchten. Begeistert bin ich von der Tatsache, dass bei der Silikonhülle auch an den Dock Connector und an den Kopfhörereingang gedacht wurde, diese sind ebenfalls geschützt. Bisher habe ich diese Vorrichtung noch bei keiner anderen Silikonhülle gesehen, ziemlich einzigartig also. Die Kunststoffhülle bedeckt die gesamte Vorderseite inklusive des Displays. Kratzer kann man also nicht bekommen, solange der iPod in der sicheren iSkin Hülle aufbewahrt wird. Zur Zeit ist diese Form des Schutzes, wie ich finde, das Beste was man bekommen kann.

Persönliche Gedanken

Ich persönlich bin sehr begeistert vom iSkin duo. Die Vielfältigkeit der Hülle gefällt mir ebenfalls gut, ich kann mir meinen iPod entweder sicher am Gürtel befestigen oder ihn um den Hals tragen, auch kann ich ihn einfach in meine Hosentasche stecken. Zuerst war ich zugegebenermaßen etwas skeptisch dem neuen Design gegenüber eingestellt, aber ich muss wirklich feststellen, dass diese neue Version einen großen Pluspunkt bietet im Vergleich zum Vorgänger: auch bei doppeltem Schutz ist der iPod plus Hülle klein geblieben. Allerdings gib es auch einen negativen Aspekt beim iSkin duo, den es hier zu erwähnen gilt: es ist etwas schwierig, die Kunststoffhülle über die Silikonhülle zu ziehen. Man muss quasi die beiden Hüllen übereinander massieren und reiben, bis der Kunststoffschutz endlich vollständig den iPod bedeckt. Das ist allerdings nur eine Kleinigkeit wenn man bedenkt, dass man diese Prozedur ja nur einmal durchführen muss. Auch für Individualität ist beim iSkin duo gesorgt, das Modell wird in verschiedenen Farben angeboten. Wenn man nun insgesamt gesehen auf der Suche nach dem perfekten Schutz mit guter Qualität für seinen iPod ist, hat die Suche nun ein Ende: iSkin duo bietet den perfekten Schutz!

Yesterday evening the iPhone-Dev team released their highly anticipated tool called Pwnage! This tool will Pwn your firmware and activate and jailbreak your iPhone / iPod Touch. Check out this video to see how it works:

今日は、iPod関連のレビュー　パート２と言う事でiSkin duoと言うiPod nano 3Gのケースを紹介したいと思います。ちなみに、iPod関連のレビュー　パート１はVmoda Vibeのイアホンについてのレビューです。

パッケージの中身

iSkin duoを購入するとケース以外にも色々なアクセサリーがついてきます。パッケージの中身は下の写真に写っています。シリコンで作られているケースとプラスチックのフロントプロテクター以外に、ストラップとベルトクリップも入っています。ストラップはiPodのドックコネクターにつけるもので、iPodを首からぶら下げたいと言う方にはとても便利だと思います。

デザイン

iSkin duoのケースは前のデザインとはかなり異なるようになりました。ぼくは、iPod nano 1GのためのiSkin duoを持っていますけど、1G用のケースはシリコンのケース（ジャケット）を二つiPodに着用するという物で３G用のケースとはかなり違うデザインでした。新しいiSkinも２層プロテクションと言うアイデアの所は昔と同じなのですが、このアイデアの実現法が少々変わりました。１層目のシリコンケースは前のケースとほとんどかわりません。透明でとても質がいいケースだとぼくは思います。２層目のプラスチックのプロテクターはクリックウイール以外は前面を完璧に守ってくれます。もちろんiPodの液晶画面もです。

プロテクション

iSkinのプロテクションは、かなりのものだと言えると思います。１層目のシリコンケースはとても頑丈だと思います。ベルトクリップを使用しないと言う方のため、シリコンケースの裏側の穴２つをうめるための小さなシリコンプレートもあるのでクリップを使わない際もiPodに傷がつくことはないと思います。その上、ドックコネクターとヘッドホンのポートも使用されていない時保護可能だと言う事がとても気に入っています。２層目のプラスチックで作られているフロントプロテクターは前面を完全に守ってくれるのでとても良いとおもいます。特にiPodの画面がとても効率よくまもられているのでぼくは気に入っています。最後にiSkinのプロテクションについて一言：個人的ぼくは、このケースよりすぐれている保護性能をもっているケースはないと思います。

最後に、

ぼく自身はiSkin duoがとてもお気に入りです。特に高い保護性能が気に入っています。その上、ストラップやベルトクリップもついてくるのでiPodを色々な方法で持ち歩けると言うのがプラスだと思います。初めて新しいデザインをみた時は少々不安だったのですが、この新しいデザインは使ってみるととても良いものだと実感しました。特に、前のバージョンとはちがってフロントプロテクターが薄いプラスチックなので２層とも着用してもiPodがあまり分厚くなりません。一つ批判があるとしたら、フロントプロテクターを着用するのが少々めんどくさいということです。でも、普通はフロントプロテクターはそうそう付け外ししないものなのであまり気にしなくても良いかと思います。iSkin duoはためらいなくiPodをお持ちの方ならおすすめできます。色々なカラーバージョンがあるのでぜひiSkinのサイトにジャンプしてみてください。

If you are a desktop customizer you probably know of the great site called MacThemes. It has been one of the best places for customizers to get pretty icons, wallpapers, themes etc. However, since today the site is down due to some legal hick hack. This sure is a great loss for all the desktop customizers out there. Let's hope that this is only temporary and MacThemes will make it back.

In the meanwhile the search for an alternative source for customization resources begins...do you know of another great site? If so why not let all the readers know where you get your pretty icons from? Looking forward to seeing some great recommendations.

(or is it just an April fool's joke? I guess we'll know more when time passes)

Intro

In the series of iPod related product reviews, today I will review the Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) in-ear headphones. There are various color variation as well as the option to choose 9mm or 11mm speakers. I was fortunate enough to be supplied with the 11mm speaker product sample by Skullcandy.

Package Content

The Package includes a custom EVA carrying case to put your headphones in. It is a very stylish white pouch with the neat Skullcandy logo on top. You will also get three pairs of semi-transparent earpieces (sizes: small, medium, large). I will recommend trying out the different sizes to choose the one that suits you the most. You will also get two stickers you can put on your skateboard or binder or something and a life-long replacement warranty.

Design and Manufacturing

These headphones are probably one of the best manufactured ones I've seen. There is so much love in detail what makes the Full Metal Jacket nearly perfect. The thing that surprised me the moment I unpacked the headphones was the integrated volume control. There was no mention about this in the product description and I was very happy to see this feature. As an iPod Touch owner i found, that the option i use the most: Volume control, was very inaccessible: Getting the touch out of the pocket, unlocking it and then adjusting the volume. With this volume control this annoying process was replaced by just dragging a little slider attached to you headphone cable. I was a bit worried that the weight of the volume control might become an issue since it might drag the earphones down and make them uncomfortable to wear. After testing this whilst jogging I found that the volume control is so light that you won't notice it at all. So even if you are someone who doesn't need this (in my opinion very useful) feature you still wouldn't be annoyed by it. The headphones themselves are in a metal alloy casing making them very robust but still very light. The cables are colored white what makes it perfect for iPod users since it fits perfectly to their design. The cable seems to be very durable and has a texture that reminds me of rubber (not elastic though). This makes it sometimes a little difficult to disentangle them since they "stick" better. The audio jack is gold plated for perfect sound and long life.The Skullcandy logo is printed on the earphones as well on the volume control (as mentioned above these headphones are thought through into the last detail). There are various color options to choose from, which are all in a metallic finish. I think from the design this product is more for the younger crowd and I read that this brand is especially popular in the skateboarding community.

Sound Quality

After trying out these headphones, the first thing I noticed was the amazing sound quality. You get a 3D-like sound experience and the bass sounds especially good. As in the previous earphone review I loaded up songs from different genres (Hip-Hop, Pop, RnB, Rock, Punk, Classic,...) to check wether there are sound frequencies that dominate. After listening through all the selected songs i had the impression that these headphones reproduce the sound very well. I had no need to set any EQ settings to compensate any dominant frequency regions (one might argue that the FMJ's are slightly bass-heavy but I personally was happy with the EQ turned off). Since I now also own the iPod Touch I tested the sound while watching movies, TV Shows and video Podcasts and again was blown away by the amazing quality I got out of the earphones. The voices were crisp and very easy to understand, the action scenes with things blowing up had amazing bass and it felt like having a subwoofer standing next to me. The FMJ's seal off very good reducing the ambient noise and hence making them especially useful in noisy surroundings like in the bus, train or on the streets. Compared to the standard iPod headphones I don't need to turn up the volume as much as I used to what resulted into a noticeable increase in battery life.

Final thoughts

I think these in-ear headphones are especially interesting for the younger generation: Not only do the FMJ's deliver exceptional sound quality, there is also so much thought put into the design of these headphones making them eye-catching fashion items. As an iPod user I am very pleased with the white cord and how the metallic color fits perfectly. Given the good ambient noise reduction I also understand why they are especially popular in the skateboarding community. The price tag of $59.95 (+ $20 for the 11mm version) seems to be absolutely justified for the quality you are getting. If you are someone looking for high quality headphones with a unique urban style I can strongly recommend the FMJ's. There is also a iPhone version with an integrated microphone you might want to check out. As mentioned above I tested only the 11mm speaker version and cannot give any pros and cons whether to get the 9mm or 11mm version: The design will be the same but I assume there will be some difference in the sound. I personally would go for the 11mm since those additional $20 are an investment worth it in my opinion.

MacBook Air: Hands On ...

Bestellt wurde das MacBook Air am 26. Januar zusammen mit einem HP Drucker sowie dem MacBook Air USB Lan Adapter. Als Liefertermin wurde der 11. März genannt.
Das Book kam wie erwartet früher an. Genau 1 Monat später am 26. Februar.

Verpackung:
Die Verpackung ist schlicht in schwarz gehalten. Die Deckelinnenseite ist wie bei der iPhone Verpackung mit Schaumstoff versehen. Im Vergleich zur MacBook Verpackung ist diese ein ganzes Stück geschrumpft, wobei es selbst hier noch Einsparpotential gegeben hätte. Im Karton selber befindet sich nämlich noch ein Einsetzer, welcher diesen in fast 2 Hälften teilt - die untere ist ungenutzt.

Optik:
Die Aluoptik, die bei Apple derzeit sehr in Mode zu sein scheint, und die schwarzen Tasten, welche sich schön vom Rest der Oberfläche absetzen, bilden das insgesamt gelungene Design des MacBook Air. Das (Multi-)Touchpad ist erheblich größer als das eines normalen MacBooks, dafür musste die „Maustaste“ etwas geschrumpft werden.
Das Gehäuse hat spitz zulaufende Kanten, welche das MacBook nochmals erheblich dünner erscheinen lassen.

Display:
Das Display ist mit seinen Abmessungen dem eines normalen MacBooks gleich zu setzten. Sehr positiv fällt die enorme Leuchtkraft der LED Technik auf. Selbst in extrem lichtstarken Umgebungen mutiert der Glossybildschirm nicht zum Schminkspiegel.
Empfehlenswert ist eine Helligkeitstufe in der unteren Hälfte zu wählen, da bei voller Helligkeit der Bildschirm ehr als „blendend“ empfunden werden kann.

Performance:
Im vorliegenden MacBook Air werkelt ein 1.6 Ghz C2D Prozessor, zusammen mit einer 80 GB PATA Festplatte sowie 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher.
Die gefühlte Geschwindigkeit liegt zwischen einem MacBook C2D 2,0 Ghz und einem MacBook Pro mit einem C2D 2,4 Ghz.
Auch das Benutzen einer Virtualisierungslösung für Windows stellt das Air nicht vor unlösbare Aufgaben. Ein Windows XP läuft ohne zu zucken in VMWare Fusion in allen Modi (Vollbild, Einzelfester, Unity).
Zum Spielen sollte man lieber auf ein MacBook Pro oder einen anderen, grafisch besser ausgestatteten, Mac zurückgreifen. Prinzipiell funktionieren alle Spiele die auf einem MacBook laufen auch auf dem Air.

Anschlüsse:
Spartanisch, praktisch, gut?
Zugegebenermaßen sind die Anschlüsse des MacBook Air recht karg gesäht. Zur Verfügung steht neben einem MicroDVI Anschluss und einer Kopfhörerbuchse lediglich ein USB Anschluss. Ein CD/DVD Laufwerk fehlt komplett.
Für den Sound unterwegs sorgt ein eingebaute Mono-Lautsprecher welcher für den mobilen Einsatz mehr als ausreichend ist.
Im Normalbetrieb vermisst man gestrichene Anschlüsse wie FireWire oder einen zweiten USB Port so gut wie nie. Auch auf ein optisches Laufwerk greift man ehr selten zurück.
Wünschenswert wäre ein Kensington Anschluss für das "sichere Stehenlassen in der Mittagspause" gewesen.
Den LAN Anschluss erhält man in Form eines optionalen USB-LAN Adapters.

Akku:
Der Akku überzeugt auf ganzer Linie. Die von Apple angegebenen 5h „Wireless Produktivity“ werden zwar nicht erreicht, allerdings hält das Air im „Wlan-Office-Betrieb“, je nach Einstellungen (Bluetooth / WiFi / Displaybeleuchtung) gute 4h durch.
Je aufwändiger die Programme (zB Photoshop oder VMWare Fusion) desto kürzer die Akkulaufzeit.

Fazit:
Was ist das MacBook Air? Es ist kein Notebook für PowerUser, es ist kein Desktop-Ersatz. Vielmehr ist ein mobiles Arbeitstier das in erster Linie durch sein flaches und leichtes Design vom Rest des Marktes abhebt.
"Brauchen" tut man ein MacBook Air nicht wirklich. Der "wollen"-Faktor ist bei diesem Notebook nicht zu unterschätzen. Wer sich für ein MacBook Air entscheidet sollte auch in einer entsprechenden Umwelt leben und arbeiten. D.h. Viel WLAN, wenig Steckdosen, wenig (besser keine) CDs und viel unterwegs, denn nur hier Zeit das Air seine wirklichen Stärken ...

Yesterday my long awaited iPod Touch arrived! Here are some unboxing pictutes:

Much smaller box than expected... no place for an iTunes CD.As usual: the cable, the new earphones, and the dock-plastic-thingy. One small plastic stand (that transparent thing) to place your Touch neatly at an angle so you can watch your movies without holding that thing the whole time :D
first impression: Very nice design. Love the screen (amazing quality!). Also extremely thin... But: a bit heavy imho.

Einleitung

Nachdem ich nun bereits einige Produkte und Anwendungen rund um das MacBook und dem Mac im Allgemeinen getestet habe, dachte ich es wäre an der Zeit mal einen Artikel über ein iPod verwandtes Produkt zu schreiben. Da ich mir auch vor kurzem den neuen iPod nano gekauft habe, begab ich mich auf die Suche nach interessantem iPod Zubehör. Natürlich brach es mir das Herz meinen alten nano beiseitezulegen - ich betrachte die 1. nano Generation immernoch als den besten iPod - jedoch hat der neue nano auch einiges zu bieten. Aus diesen Gründen, erwarten euch in den nächsten Wochen und Monaten viele neue Berichte rund um den iPod hier bei Days of our MacBooks! Das erste Produkt, über das ich in dieser Serie berichten will, sind die in-ear Kopfhörer von V-moda: Vibes.

Paketinhalt

Zusammen mit den Vibes enthält das Paket noch weiteres Zubehör: Ein Kabel-Manager (zum aufrollen) aus Plastik, ein kleines schwarzes Ledertäschchen und insgesamt 6 Paare Aufsätze. Man erhält drei verschiedene Größen an Aufsätzen (small, medium, large) in zwei Farben: Transparent und schwarz. Mir persönlich gefallen die transparenten Aufsätze mehr als die schwarzen und für mich liefert die Größe "medium" den besten Tragekomfort und die beste Rauschunterdrückung. Alle Größen einmal auszuprobieren ist wahrscheinlich die beste Idee (die Größe "large" ist jedoch tatsächlich enorm groß - sie haben nicht mal mehr in meine Ohren gepasst).

Design und Fertigung

Zum Design bin ich mir nicht sicher, wo ich beginnen sollte. Die Vibes sind wahrscheinlich die schönsten Kopfhörer, die ich jemals gesehen habe. Die Metallfertigung mit den schwarzen Akzenten ist einfach prachtvoll. Auch die Kabel sind eine nähere Betrachung wert: Das schwarze Kabel ist von transparentem Platik umhüllt, was es sehr robust macht und gleichzeitig ein schönes Aussehen verleiht. Die Kopfhörer sind in vielen Farbvariationen erhältlich und ein Blick auf die offizielle Website lohnt sich bestimmt. Ich bin mir sicher, dass es für jeden eine Farbe gibt, die gefällt. Die Fertigung der Vibes ist sehr gut. Das Finish der Metallhülle ist perfekt, die Aufsätze passen perfekt an die Kopfhörer und hinsichtlich der Fertigung ist nichts auszusetzten.

Ohraufsätze und Komfort

Ich würde gerne einige Worte über den Tragekomfort der Vibes verlieren - dies sind meine ersten in-ear-Kopfhörer. Hat man die Aufsätze der richtigen Größe gefunden sind die Kopfhörer sehr angenehm zu tragen. Für mich passt die Größe "medium" perfekt und liefern ein sehr angenehme Tragekomfort. Die Aufsätze bestehen aus sehr weichem Silikon und man vergisst schnell, dass man die Kopfhörer im Ohrkanal hat. Mir ist aufgefallen, dass verschiedene Größen das Klangerlebnis geringfügig verändern. Ich persönlich habe das Gefühl, dass die mittlere Größe den Bass besser wiedergibt als die kleinen Aufsetzter. Es könnte nur meine Einbildung sein, jedoch glaube ich einen Unterschied zu hören - Meine Empfehlung wäre alle Größen durchzuprobieren und sich ein eigenes Bild zu machen. Zur Rauschunterdrückung kann ich sagen, dass die Vibes die Umgebungslaute ganz gut unterdrücken.

Klangqualität

Beim Kauf von Kopfhörern ist der wichtigste Aspekt die Klangqualität und wie die Musik wiedergegeben wird. Zuallererst kann ich sagen, dass die Klangqualität absolut toll ist. Ich habe noch nie in-ear-Kopfhörer besessen (nur normale Kopfhörer) und war daher sehr überrascht als ich zum ersten mal Musik abgespielt hatte, wie gut doch mein iPod die Klänge wiedergeben kann. Nachdem sich die erste Aufregung legte, machte ich mich daran, die Vibes systematisch zu testen. Ich füllte meinen iPod mit Musik aus verschiedenen Genres und spielte sie ab - Klassik, Hip-Hop, RnB, Pop (meist J-Pop), Rock, Punk und Jazz. Die Stärken der Vibes sind die Bässe und die tieferen Mitteltöne. Hip-Hop, RnB und Pop hörten sich dank dieser Eingenschaft fantastisch an. Wenn man Lieder mit viel Bass hört ist es tatsächlich als ob man Subwoofer in den Ohren hätte oder als ob man in einem Club wäre. Bevor ich die Vibes testete hatte ich meinen EQ setting immer auf "bass booster" eingestellt. Mit den Vibes stellte ich es jedoch auf "flat" um, da ich keinen Grund sah die bereits so gut wiedergegebenen tiefen Töne weiter zu verstärken. Wie ich bereits oben erwähnte liegt die Stärke der Vibes in den tiefen Frequenzen. Die Wiedergabe der höheren Frequenzen ist jedoch auch sehr gut. Allerdings stellte ich bei nicht so Bass-intensiven Liedern fest, dass der Tieffrequenzbereich überbetont wurde. Vor allem bei klassischer Musik fiel mir diese Dominanz der Bässe auf. Nachdem ich also in den EQ Einstellungen rumspielte, kam ich zum Entschluss, dass die Vibes bei der Einstellung "treble booster" am natürlichsten klangen. Für manche Punk Lieder verwende ich ebenfalls diese Einstellung. Mein abschliessendes Urteil zur Klangqualität wäre: Exzellent mit fantastischem Bass. Alle Frequenzbereiche werden sehr gut wiedergegeben und mit den entsprechenden EQ Einstellungen (mit der limitierten Auswahl bei den iPods eine schnelle Suche) hört sich jedes Genre sehr gut an.

Fazit

Mit dem schönen Design und dem fantastischen Bass glaube ich, dass die Vibes besonders für Leute interessant sein wird, die zeitgenössische Musik (wie z.B. Hip-Hop, RnB, Pop, etc.) hören und auch auf das Aussehen der Kopfhörer Wert legen. Falls man jedoch besonderen Wert auf eine natürliche bzw. neutrale Klangwiedergabe legt, bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob die Vibes die richtigen Hörer sind. Diese Kopfhörer sind qualitativ sehr hochwertig und wenn man das Club-Gefühl auch unterwegs haben will, kann ich diese Vibes sehr empfehlen. Der Preis liegt mit 101$ relativ hoch, jedoch glaube ich, dass die Qualität der Kopfhörer diesen Preis rechtfertigen. Für iPhone Besitzer gibt es auch eine spezielle Version mit dem Namen "Vibe Duo", welches neben einem Mikrofon auch einen Kontrollknopf integriert hat.

Make your Vista look like Leopard (almost...)

If you are a Boot Camp user and have Vista installed and don't like the look of Vista there is a way to make your Vista installation resemble Leopard. The solution's name is Vista OS X. You can download the installer from here:

Be advised though that the pack fiddles with system files so a backup would be a good idea just in case.

Microsoft Office 2008 mac update out!

Here is a modded Macbook Air that costs 26.ooo Euros. Why does it cost that much you ask? It's modded with 12.000 crystals. Now, I won't comment on the looks but apparently some people think that this modded MBA looks better than the original I guess.
