Live Today Like It's Your Last...

Needing desperately to stay positive, so I decided to do what I used to love doing. Write and connect with people.

Everything with life is so uncertain, nothing about tomorrow is promised and that rings so clearly now that I'm going through days that I once again, never thought would be my life. First major one has to have been when I lost my mom as a young teen. And now here I am, it happens again... A very different kind of "loss," I lost my husband from my life. I can't go into that right now but will say every day has been a struggle. Hiding my tears from myself and my kids, trying to keep strong for my kids. Truly getting different levels of MOMents!

Today, I was on Facebook, scrolling past homeschool sales, tips, some local yard sales, a few updates of love with Valentine's Day around the corner, then "RIP" posts came with an old co-worker tagged along with the images of her. Beautiful mom of two, she was just posting about a month ago I thought I had scrolled passed it as usual. She is now the second coworker to pass away from that same store we worked together years ago before I became a mom. They were both young, maybe late twenties, early thirties. Both unexpected, both so full of life, so full of beautiful personalities... And just like us full of opinions, and worries about our children I'm sure. Doing all we can in this life. Then something happened to them, families haven't said what happened online. It was so sudden - we'll never know what happened.

Just that they lived, and then, they are now gone.

We can no longer hear their voices, hear their opinions again, and all that once seemed like troubles a day ago meant nothing in those last moments when all everyone wanted was for them to live I'm sure... I am too familiar with the loss of a loved one. It calls for your strength and the loss of someone as close as a mom never gets easier. As life goes on it actually gets harder in some ways.

So why do so many live their lives in torture causing themselves and everyone trouble the way they do? I wish everyone would just live life, be their true selves instead of this way and that way with people... Some might say I'm immature or that I haven't learned the way the world is, I say it's exactly the opposite. I was happy when I was immature, that was when I didn't know such evil people existed, those with evil selfish intentions, or those who with fake personas - those I only saw on films growing up.

How did my thoughts go from talking about one thing and another? They are all connected thoughts, memories and challenges of life.

Main message here is that life is short, and tomorrow truly isn't promised. It doesn't have to mean life and death either, it can simply mean that tomorrow can be absolutely different from what you expected or even planned for. Don't live your life according to rules, and opinions of others. I'm personally working on that one myself. Imagine what you can become if you follow your dreams, your beliefs, and actually let yourself live.

Be kind, be honest. And most importantly, remember that you have no control over people and how they choose to be, but you do have a choice in how you live your life everyday. Please, choose honest and kind. To go back to the title of this post "Live Today Like It's Your Last," how would you live your life if it was your last day? Would you tell someone you love them? Maybe you'd choose to spend real valuable time with those you love? What really matters to you? Live everyday with purpose.

*SIP to my coworkers who passed away too young and too soon, may their families find peace and much needed strength... May we who have been given the gift of another day not waste it. Aging is a gift denied to many!

NY's 529 College Savings Program #NYs529Event #AD

Last week I enjoyed an afternoon with my children at the Crafting Studio in New York City. While my children had fun crafting, I learned about the NY's 529 College Savings Program at the #NYs529Event hosted by Mom Trends. A great opportunity to mingle with fellow blogger families and learn about a great option to start saving for our children's future. I always imagined opening a savings account for higher education to be a difficult task, at the least one that would require a large amount to deposit, so I was pleasantly surprised that it takes as little as a dollar to open an account. The other fact that stood out to me that I wanted to share with you all is that there are tax savings, you earnings grow federally tax-deferred, qualified withdrawals are tax-free, and in some states like here in New York have other tax benefits as well.

Just about anyone can open a 529 account for children for the money to be used for educational purposes in the future, it can be parents, grandparents, other relatives, even friends, as long as a U.S citizen or a resident alien. The account owner picks investments, assign a beneficiary, and determine how the money is used. The account holder can also benefit from the state tax deduction as well.

The money saved in the 529 account can be used for anything considered a qualified higher-education expense, including tuition; books, supplies, equipments, expenses for the purchase of certain computer equipment, software, and computer related services. Some room and board fees as well. There are eligible education institutions like trade schools or vocational schools that the money can be used towards as well, not just 2-4 year colleges.

Beneficiaries can attend college in any state, not just the state sponsoring the #529 plan.
There are no income restrictions to open a #529 account.
An eligible education institution is a school that has been assigned a federal school code by the Department of Education.
The account owner - not the beneficiary - is always in control of the account, even when the beneficiary becomes an adult.
There is no age limit for beneficiaries of a 529 on a 529 plan.
A beneficiary can have more than one account. For example, parents can open an account for a child and grandparents can open an account for the same child.
Advantages of a 529: tax deductions, tax-deferred growth, and tax-free withdrawals.

Most of us in the toy world all know about FlipaZoo from Jay@Play, but not all families do, and I have to share these goodies with you again. I always walk around the show floor loving so many of the items, and trying to narrow down my top picks is always the hardest part. I have chosen items that I truly think will come in handy for parents. I tried to focus on items that will grow with a child and continue to give as they grow.

Story time Chess is one of my top picks as it's great for those with older children, it teaches children how to play Chess in a fun way without them even knowing it. The Keekaroo Height Right Highchair caught my eye as it can be the only chair you'll ever need as it grows with the child. The comfortable chair can be adjusted and used all the way to adulthood. My last but not least top pick is the Tubimal tub/container, because every child needs a bathtub. It is one that is an adorable bathtub that is great for different stages and can be used as a storage container once they child outgrows it. I love to choose items that you can get multiple uses out of, and these are great!

Story Time Chess is a brand new way to teach your child Chess. Children can start learning as early as 3 years of age. You read your child the story, the characters have different traits about them that go with the actual chess pieces and through recognition of the pieces children will learn chess in a new way. Great way to teach, learn and bond with your child.

The Keekaroo Height Right high chair is comfortable and is the only seat you'll need for your child. I love a product that grows with a child and this is it. I'm a huge fan of Razor scooters, both my older kids started with Razor scooters and graduated to the older kid versions with time. My youngest just turned 3, and was recently borrowing his sister's old Razor scooter which was pink. My daughter's first scooter was the Razor Jr Lil' Pop Scooter, a really fun scooter with lights! My son was so excited and ready for his own scooter, he literally took off with the Razor Jr t3 Scooter right away at the park. Now everywhere we go, he is on his scooter. You Are Not Responsible for My Child with Food Allergies

I stopped writing about food allergies a long time ago. Every time I start typing, I honestly feel discouraged. It feels like everyone has their minds made up and it's not worth speaking up. But time and time again I've read many stories where food allergic families, mostly those allergic to peanuts show extreme outrage in the wrong way. There are also so-called studies that come out every once in a while concluding the cause of allergies along with the miracle "fix". I even heard of companies making a business out of helping you make sure your child doesn't become allergic. It's all wrong. It also serves for fuel for comedians time and time again, all with the wrong information.
I get it, I'm very upset too. But I also know that no one can help me. No one has to help me. And it certainly isn't the fault of other families who don't have allergies. I don't even ask my own immediate family to accommodate to our allergies. Whether that is the right decision or not, I really don't know. I just didn't like the feeling I would get in inconveniencing someone else. I hope one day we are able to make close friends with those willing to understand and accommodate.

When a person is sick in the hospital or ill in bed, you send food, you cook food for them when you can. With food allergies, you can't even bring over a hot plate of something after they've given birth. I found that people don't know how to have fun, or show love without food. I've had to learn myself.

A quick background in our allergy journey, or at least how it started... I have 3 children with life threatening food allergies. I grew up knowing nothing about allergies, not even dealing with a sneeze. Same thing with my husband, we ate everything, and we never read ingredients etc.

When my first born had one of his first solid foods at 6 months old, he had an anaphylactic reaction. By the time I could figure out what was happening to my baby who was happily eating, it was almost too late. My husband was able to spot the hives all over as an allergic reaction of some sort and we rushed to the hospital. My son was crying nonstop and fussing, unable to tell me what was happening. Within 15 minutes, he was becoming unrecognizable. His eyes were swelling shut, his tiny little body was swelling up, all the way to the tips of his toes and fingers. We were lucky to have lived close to a hospital ER. Our lives changed that day. Everyday I have that moment and many moments after like it that haunt me and keep me on my toes, always in fear, always aware.

Living with food allergies is not being able to enjoy the everyday like everyone else does, holidays with your family will never be the same.

It means not being able to enjoy any parties or events the way everyone else does.
It means not being able to throw a party like everyone else does.
It means not being able to let your guard down, ever.
It means being aware all the time.
It means making friends are that much harder.
It means not being able to share snacks with friends.
It means asking your friend not to lick their fingers when they eat, or being careful not to touch them.
It means you might get a reaction if you walk into a Starbucks.
It means not being able to shop like everyone else does.
It means many calls to companies to ask about their ingredients and handling procedures is a common thing.
It means cooking everything you eat at home.
It means you don't travel for food, you travel with food.
It means carrying pots, pans, utensils with you.
It means flying can be scary for different reasons, but the same as sitting in the movie theatre.
It means learning to cook while on vacation.
It means learning to make the best out of it all.
It means being grateful that you know everything that you've consumed in your life.
It means learning to not put your fingers in your mouth to pick something out of your teeth or to taste anything, ever - unless home.
It means learning to never put your hands on your face.
It means you might not go to school because it just isn't safe enough for you.
It means worrying about your life as an adult, navigating a life with food everywhere.
It means not letting your food allergies stop you from living and experiencing life.
It means having food allergies but still not making that the major thing about you.
It means hoping that people will be more accommodating and understanding in the future but never holding people accountable.
It means being aware, never being able to let your guard down.

If you just skimmed through the long list, I understand - I rambled. The point is, it's a long never-ending list reminding us life is never the same again with food allergies. It's a dangerous world out there for those with food allergies.

Now to address parents of children with peanut allergies being outraged that someone else is eating peanuts at a park, a shopping cart or anywhere else for that matter. First of all, I get it. We have allergies to wheat, dairy, eggs, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, oats and so much more, it's a ridiculously long list that is all life threatening. So I get it, it's our whole life knowing no where is safe. But the last thing I would do is confront any other parent for feeding their child. It would be a reminder for me to check all surfaces before touching, or allowing my child to touch. It would be a reminder for me, although I don't need any, that no where is safe. Food can't be banned, and sadly many are deathly allergic to many foods. When you've walked a day in the life of a multiple food allergy mom you'd know not to address every issue with food, and the peanut allergy moms would be thrilled with their circumstances in comparison.

I wish that every time a peanut allergy mom spoke up it was for those with multiple food allergies as well. They'll complain about the peanut butter while their child is eating a cracker with wheat and dairy, crumbling all over. Should I stop you while your daughter's only snack that she can eat is being enjoyed because my child is allergic to it? I'd be walking around everywhere tapping shoulders if that was the case. Stop making that scene. Can we all just be courteous to one another, clean up after ourselves. Crumbs or smudges of a food is life threatening to ~~a child~~ someone with food allergies, and while it's easy to say "stay home and live in a bubble," that's not realistic, necessary or very nice to say to someone with a health issue. The sad truth is that the numbers are rising, and while there are many theories out there about why these allergies exist - they are all theories and fake reports based on a few people. The one thing with food allergies is that it is completely different from one person to another.

Those of you that don't deal with food allergies, you don't have to understand or completely get it. You don't have to stop eating or feeding your child the foods you like. In fact enjoy it even more because so many can't.

However, we only *ask* wherever you might be, clean up after yourself as much as you can. Just be courteous and know that there are sadly a great number of people with life threatening food allergies out there. A child walking in the store, just like you and your child were a few moments ago. But this time if he acts like a child for one moment, he could potentially die. He doesn't need reminders from you or anyone else, he is always aware and unable to be a careless child because his mom said it to him every few minutes since he started crawling. Everything is already tough, sometimes a walk in the store is nice if it doesn't have to be life-threatening.

Maybe stores can clean the carts better, the seats and aisles in the movie theaters..there has to be a better way to keep everyone happy and safe. But to these peanut allergy parents, stop causing stir over every little thing that isn't necessary.

Just clean up as much as you can after, wherever you are. That's all we can ask for, that's all any of us can really hope for. We all have our plate full of problems and while you don't have to understand or even help us with ours, just don't make it worse - I'll do the same.

If you are looking to purchase a home for the first time, here are some useful tips to keep in mind. These tips are useful in protecting yourself, and unique from common tips often shared.

Do your own research, and compare it to the ones others offer you.
Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Never let anyone rush you into a purchase or process, make sure you understand.
Interview everyone, look up reviews but don't entirely rely on them.
Always remember, no matter how nice the realtor you have chosen to work with, it is still a job to them. No one has your best interest like you do.
Ask for copies of everything.
Ask to be cc'd on official emails representing you, it eliminates worries of misrepresentation.
Don't be afraid to get secondary opinions.
Don't be afraid to walk away.
Trust your instincts.
