Join us in dialogue and fellowship as we examine a host of issues centered on our mental, physical, behavioral, and spiritual needs.

The 10th annual Black Man's Think Tank Conference is set for Friday and Saturday, April 9-10 at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, OH. This year's theme is entitled Rebuilding Self. The conference is sponsored by Sinclair Community College, Wilberforce University, and the Black Man's Think Tank (BMTT). It has forums that discuss issues of importance to Black communities especially as they pertain to Black men and boys. Each year the conference includes a full day of interactive workshops, panel discussions, lectures, health screenings, vendors, food, and entertainment.

This year the conference will address strategies and programs that educate, inform, inspire, and direct individuals to rebuild themselves mentally, physically, behaviorally, financially, and/or spiritually.

This year's keynote speaker is Tommie Lewis, President, Make It Plain Consulting, of Columbus, Ohio. Tommie's address will explore the following questions: Is it possible to be a successful African American leader at the tender age of 19? Is it sufficient enough to assume age-maturity, community status and professional titles equate to leadership competence? Obviously, many of the most intelligent African American leaders in our day did not know, expect or plan for the emotional, cultural and behavioral impact that the global and national economic conditions would present to the Black community and its leadership. These challenges require new, universal and results-driven solutions. They require rebuilding the Black man.

The conference is free and open to the public but to reserve a lunch ticket, you must pre-register. No exceptions!

The Friday conference is tailored to adolescent and young adult males while the Saturday conference is tailored to the general public.

For educators, below is a list of curricular activities, which assist in developing critical thinking and communication skills. A draft program is also below for your information.

In addition, there will be a Student Showcase (December) written, directed, designed and performed by Sinclair Theatre students. Specific information on performance times and ticket availability will be on the Sinclair website soon.

Once On This Island
A Musical with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty
Directed by David Brush
Based upon the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy
October 15-23, 2010

An adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death. Featuring islands rhythms and cultural story-telling this score from the creators of Ragtime and Seussical provides an intimate show presented in a dance/movement-driven style reminiscent of story theatre with colorful sets and costumes.

The Foreigner
A Comedy by Larry Shue
Directed by Nelson Sheeley
Feb. 18-26, 2011

Pathologically shy Charlie who is visiting a bed and breakfast is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So his friend tells everyone he is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone with the strangers, Charlie overhears more than he should including damaging revelations made with the thought that he doesn't understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play where things go uproariously awry for the "bad guys," and the "good guys" emerge triumphant.

The Women of Lockerbie
A drama inspired by a true story by Deborah Brevoort
May 13-21, 2011

A mother from New Jersey roams the hills of Lockerbie, Scotland, looking for her son's remains that were lost in the terrorist attack on Pan Am 103. She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane's wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim's families. The Women of Lockerbie is loosely inspired by a true story, although the characters and situations in the play are purely fictional. Written in the structure of a Greek tragedy, it is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate.

It was awesome. Sure, sometimes the bands sucked, or broke up, or whatever. But it was awesome.

Flash foward twenty years (and remind me of Dag Nasty's All Ages Show, yeah, I know). Dayton's got a live music scene that reminds me a lot of those early days - but because this is a larger city, there's lots of venues. On top of that, I simply can't spend as much time as I'd like finding out which bands rock and which... well, don't.

Here's the bands I've found (and liked) so far, with their genre and a short writeup. Links usually go to a MySpace page, because the bands have put previews there. Add yours in the comments - my tastes are pretty specific and limited, y'know?

Singer/Songwriter
Hands down, Joe Anderl takes the cake for me here. His lyrics are poignant and intelligent, and the man is skilled and friendly. Also awesome when he decides to plug the guitar in and do an anti-acoustic show. Check out "Vanishing Voice" on his page.

Experimental
Sleepybird is one of the most unusual acts I've had the pleasure of hearing. Their first two albums are an acquired taste; The Sadness Lasts Forever is much more accessible and reminds me more of the way they sound live. "All Things Are Mine" is a good song, but I'm not horribly fond of the recording on the page here.

Punk (melodic punk?)
God, I have never been able to keep up with the various types of subgenres in punk and metal. Jasper the Colossal reminds me of acts I'd find on Fat Wreck Chords like Tilt (and I'm an absolute fan of female vocalists and all-female bands). Awesome fun energy live, and a definite must-see. Give "You Should've Been There" a listen.

Rock
The Story Changes is a technically fascinating, high-energy, and fun band. These guys are obviously having a blast just rocking. I get out to see them whenever I can, and I really can't describe them any better than that. Listen to "New Ground", then see them for yourself. Fun. Rock. Go.

Metal
I've only had a chance to see Fluwid once, but bought their album right then. Metal - like punk - has so many subgenres that I'm not even going to try. They've got the skills to make it worthwhile, and while they do the growling vocals every so often, it's not a big deal. They're dark, and fast, and heavy, and melodic. They managed to get me really moving, which is saying something. And, oh yeah, they were nice guys. Check out "Mirrors" or "The Phoenix".

I saw The Paramedic a few weeks ago, and they were tight. Amazingly so. And their site illustrates the problem with genres - a review calls them "post-hardcore", and I have no freaking idea what that is anymore. I'm definitely picking up their EP, and want to see them again. Check out "Explorers" and "Horoscopes". And yes, I love intros for metal songs. Give me a break.

The Falling Object Model impressed me when I saw them live - largely because these guys are still in high school. They're rather good now (and were significantly better than the band that was before them), and I can only imagine how much better they'll get as they get older. They also mix in some electronic elements, which tends to amuse the heck out of me. "Jazz Odyssey" (which is totally not jazz) illustrates a lot of the things I like about them.

Black American aviators, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, battled Axis powers in Europe and North Africa and then took on racism at home. Trained by the segregated military system as an experiment to see if blacks could fly in combat, these pilots made more than 15,000 sorties and 1,500 missions. Their success led to the integration of the U.S. armed forces.

February 27 and 28 at 10:00am and 2:00pm - "Harlem Renaissance" In the 1920s, African-American literature, art, music, dance, and social commentary flourished in Harlem, NY. This cultural movement redefined African-American expression. Music became the centerpiece that this movement was built around, launching an artistic awakening rather than a social revolt.

These movies are free and open to the public and can be viewed at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, located at 16 South Williams Street.

For more information, call the National Park Service at 937-225-7705.

Originals Wanted."

The cards are a reminder that the city was once a place of innovation and is again serious about recruiting such talent, says Biedenharn, Dayton's public affairs manager.

The article isn't a fluff bit. There's some valid critiquing going on (emphasis mine):

But with so many cities claiming to be a unique and fun place to be, most destination campaigns fail, as advertising without substance is inevitably wont to do, Levine says. Cities often neglect to mobilize the community into adopting the spirit of the campaign or fail to target the right audience, he says. "It makes no sense for a small town to market to Australia."

So I think our mission, as the people who live and work in the Miami Valley, is clear.

Get behind our city and region. Seriously. It's a good idea. Heck, there's good stuff on your website - like the article about ReCreate. Sounds fascinating.

It's too damn bad it's not there in HTML.

Seriously. Putting all the "real" information in Word (*.doc) and PDF files? Whose idea was that? Sure, Google can search them now, but it interrupts the experience. It makes it harder for those who want to spread the word [insert me whistling innocently here] to actually get the information and pass it along. And for those poor souls still slogging along with Adobe Reader... Well, yeah. You might have a high-end machine, but that doesn't me we do.

Don't get *rid* of the PDFs, but make a HTML layout as well. Since you've got a weekly newsletter, make it a blog, with an RSS feed, twitter account, Facebook page. Whatever. Just make it open, transparent, and easy for us to get to.

While primarily focused on birds, Drs. Jill and David Russell use their bird banding stations to introduce folks of all ages to the wonders of the outdoors. Whether introducing people to birds in their own backyards, taking students to visit "their" birds over-wintering in Mexico, or sharing long distance odysseys in far off places like Argentina, Drs. Jill and Dave see the protection of our world's natural resources as a responsibility to be shared by all. Enjoy a virtual tour of the world through the eyes of a "couple" of bird banders.

Dr. Jill Russell is the Executive Director of the Avian Research and Education Institute (AREI), a nonprofit bird conservation, education, and advocacy organization and the primary bander at the Clifford Bird Observatory at Mt St. Joseph, Ohio. Dr. David Russell is the Research/Education Director of AREI, and the primary bander at the Hueston Woods Biological Station in Hueston Woods State Park.
