Trading Simulator
Here’s another ‘FREE Trading Spreadsheet that you might find useful;

A ‘Monte Carlo Expectancy Simulator.’ Several years ago I stumbled across a simple ‘Excel Monte Carlo Trading Simulator’ on a trading forum. I decided to create my own version that was a little bit more indepth in statistical feedback, yet based on the “KISS” mentality; “Keep It Simple Stupid.”
A key word & concept to take notice of here is the word ‘Expectancy.’ This type of ‘Spreadsheet Trading Calculator’ does hold some value in depicting possible ‘probable’ outcomes that are derived from some of your entered trading metrics; namely;

User Defined Trading Metrics

Win Rate

Average Risk % Per Trade as a function of account equity

Average Return for the amount of Risk Taken

Commissions/Slippage incurred per round trip

1st of all, this ‘FREE Monte Carlo Trading Spreadsheet’ isn’t ground-breaking in anyway, although the ‘Horizontal Frequency Distribution Graph’ I’ve managed to incorporate (Thank you again Teylyn) in this Excel Trading Spreadsheet isn’t something I’ve seen anywhere else; well, not depicted or formatted this way at least.

There are some very good shareware ‘Trading Simulators’ available & most trading software platforms incorporate some kind of trading simulation functionality for backtesting & forward test modelling to evaluate your prospective & current trading systems with many ways to adjust parameters to optimise & vary performance results. Here’s just 1 link to an off the shelf trading simulator; namely the ‘Zen Monte Carlo Simulator’ by a rather clever man by the name of Volker Butzlaff.
Zentrader.de
As a note, one nice feature of this software is the (data scrambling) functionality concerning the generation of synthetic price data on basis of original historical data (EOD, Intraday etc.) Worth taking a look.

Van Tharp & ‘R’ Multiples.

It’s almost impossible to speak about trading in relation to risk & position sizing without mentioning the demigod in this field; probably the leading expert in position sizing & money management; namely Dr.Van Tharp Ph.D. His very useful concept of R, R-Multiples & Trade Expectancy. I don’t feel the need; nor am I trying to reinvent the wheel here; so here’s a link to Dr. Van Tharp’s explanation of what ‘Expectancy’ is.
I’d rather lead you here than just repeat or paraphrase his explanation.
Van Tharp-EXPECTANCY

Side Note:
Although Van Tharp speaks in terms of;

‘R’ (Basically £’s at risk per trade.)

‘R Multiples’(A great way to evaluate your trade’s performance in relation to your initial risk.)

‘Expectancy’ (Your trading system’s “Mean Or Average R-Multiple Generated.”)

“Expectancy Tells You The Net Profit Or Loss That You Can Expect Over A Large Number Of Single Unit-Trades.”
Dr. Van Tharp; (page 135 – Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom).

I would like to point out that my ‘Monte Carlo Trading Simulator’ generates results using a constant ‘R’ for all trades.

All winning trades are derived from a consistent risk % per trade that never varies.

All Losses are also derived from the same % of initial risk.

A key determining factor for every trade is that it is based on your systems ‘PAYOFF RATIO’ (Simply your systems AVERAGE profit per trade divided by your systems AVERAGE loss per trade) It also takes into account all the
‘User Defined Trading Metrics’ mentioned earlier.

So, this doesn’t show the random variations in returns that a real life trading scenario would. So the significance of ‘R’ as an evaluation metric or KPI to compare the performance of 1 trade against another is really non-applicable here.
‘R’ & Multiples or ‘R’ are extremely important; their true value being in quantifying, evaluating & ultimately being able to compare each of your trades against one another. This then leads onto ‘R-Multiples’ telling you the efficiency of your system; pen ultimately the ‘Expectancy’ of your system over ‘x’ amount of trades.
Just to add; Maybe The Holy Grail of Trading is using ‘R’ to;

“Keep Your Losses To 1R As Often As Possible
& Your Profitable Trades High Multiples Of R.”

Why I Created These Trading Simulator Spreadsheets?

The reason I created this trading spreadsheet?
Really it was to aid traders via immersive interaction; induce & cultivate a mindset that’s geared NOT towards a winning & losing mentality, but one that nurtures & promotes a state of mind that’s founded within the concept of positive expectancies. So; thinking & trading in terms of risk reward ratios, trading with objectivity; seeking a positive expectancy as an end result; one must trade whilst holding in the mind’s eye a larger/ bigger picture of trading success. Trading success cannot be obtained trading from a constant macro perspective.
It’s trading from multiple perspectives that encompass thinking in terms of PROFITABILITY. I suspect some of you, if not all of you were expecting me to say “You Must Trade In Terms Of Probabilities.” You seek a ‘Positive Expectancy’ that within a ‘basket’ of trades over ‘x’ amount of time you are a net winner. You trade for PROFITABILITY over the long run, which means trading to predetermined objectives that envision a positive expectancy.

“SUPER TRADING IS NOT ABOUT PROBABILITY; IT’S ABOUT PROFITABILITY!”

Please remember:

Trading is about having a profitable system; a trading system that has a positive expectancy over the long run. Having a high win rate usually is associated with small profits (& usually large losses). The best trading systems are quite often a little over break even on win rate %. Seek positive expectancy in your trading system. Trade for profitability defined & aligned by your objectives. Probability does play a role within actualized trading; but its governor is PROFITABILITY!

Trading Simulator Features

There are 3 different versions to download.
The only variable being in how the random numbers are generated.
The ‘Monte Carlo’ version uses the Excel inbuilt ‘RAND()’ function.

The ‘Mersenne Twister’ version is using a FREE excel Add-in via RiskAMP.com, (Thanks again Duncan Werner for responding to my request for a fully working Excel 64bit 2010 version). Basically this still a pseudorandom number generator “That has been designed specifically to rectify many of the flaws found in older algorithms,” (Namely Monte Carlo) at least that is what Wikipedia states, so it must be true!
Finally; the ‘Random.ORG’ version. A very nifty import utility (courtesy of Norie; Excel Coding GURU) that allows the import of Random.ORG random numbers.

“The Randomness Comes From Atmospheric Noise, Which For Many Purposes Is Better Than The Pseudo-Random Number Algorithms Typically Used In Computer Programs.”
(Taken From Random.org’s website).

A few features worth mentioning that I’ve managed to integrate within all 3 of these Trading ‘Expectancy’ Simulators.

A frequency Distribution Graph, that I haven’t seen elsewhere depicted this way in excel format. (Thanks again Teyln).

A ‘Statistical Probability’ of Consecutive WINS & LOSSES table-with a custom user input.

Drawdown Recovery (%).

Most Consecutive Wins & Losses (Numerical & £’s amount).

Largest Losing Streak Results (£’s).

Largest Losing Trade (£’s) & its cell reference-location within the 500 random trading simulation.

Lowest Equity Low (£’s).

Total Wins & Total Losses (Numerical & £’s).

Average Trade Win & Loss In (£’s) & as a (%).

Peak Gain (£’s).

As mentioned before; there is nothing groundbreaking here; & you can view ALL the code within ALL these FREE Trading Spreadsheets. I purposely haven’t password protected any part of these trading excel spreadsheets. This might aid/push some of you to try & ‘tweak’ or create your own versions; BE CREATIVE!

Why Use A Simulator?

In Malcolm Gladwell’s book ‘Outliers’ Gladwell submits that it takes 10,000 hours of commitment to become highly successful in any endeavour.
K. Anders Ericsson in his book ‘The Road To Excellence,’ estimates a figure of 10 years. Why is this important, & what has this got to do with Trading Simulation?
The above points towards mastery within the ‘conscious competence learning matrix model.’
To Super Trade, one must achieve a level of thought/behaviour that is congruent with ‘Unconscious Competence’ (although the STD ‘Conscious Competence’ learning model is well known as a 4 box matrix model, I ask you to consider, & I’m in agreement with integrating a 5th element, a feedback loop. Image: “Will Tayor’s – Competency Matrix.” courtesy of: Businessballs.com
I mention competence as this is the partner; & an essential ingredient to Super Trade. Partner to what you might question?

“Objectively, Super Trading Seems To Be A Behaviour SKILL, Trading In A State Of Unconscious Competence. The Irony Is That Super Trading Is 100% Psychological!”

If Super Trading IS 100% psychological, how does psychology play its part when using a trading simulator?

Can you handle PSYCHOLOGICALLY the trading simulator’s projected drawdown figure?

Can you handle PSYCHOLOGICALLY the strings/clusters of losses over time?

Can you handle PSYCHOLOGICALLY a moderate (example: 50%) Win Rate; knowing you are wrong 50% of the time?

Are you PSYCHOLOGICALLY disciplined to consistently stick to a pre-determined Risk allocation %, even after a string of losses?

Can you PSYCHOLOGICALLY adhere to your system in different market conditions?

The Take Aways

OK. What can you take away from this post & my “Day Trading Expectancy Simulator Spreadsheets?”
Pareto gave us the 80/20 Rule. So; ‘Pareto Style,’ what can I give you in a nutshell that will give you the most bang for your buck regarding these Trading Simulation Spreadsheets?

3 Words; OBJECTIVES, RISK, FREQUENCY

ALLWAYS Trade with Pre-determined OBJECTIVES. Thus try seeking parameters within these ‘Expectancy’ Simulators that will match & be congruent with your trading OBJECTIVES.

UNDERSTAND Position sizing; your allocation of RISK in £’s per trade to meet your OBJECTIVES. It’s Critical.

FREQUENCY. Be aware that having a desired (£) amount to attain whilst integrating correct position sizing can only be achieved if you have enough trades to meet your desired £() outcome. The FREQUENCY of your trades plays a huge role in how quickly you can obtain your desired outcome. Look for a strategy (Or combine strategies) that generate enough buy/sell signals that with realize your goals over time.

Gamblers Fallacy

#Side Note: Something I’d like to mention as it does crop up a lot, namely ‘Gamblers Fallacy.’ A common ‘Belief’ is that after a string of losing trades, your odds of winning on the next trade seems more probable, a regression to the mean; so you should increase your position size on the next trade. (MARTINGALE).
Larry Williams states: "After You Have Had 3 Or 4 Losing Trades In A Row, The Probability Of The Next Trade Being Not Only A Winner But A Substantial Winner Is Way In Your Favour."
The implication here is that the probability of winning each trade is somehow influenced by the result of the previous trades. Not true for coin tossing & most other random events. Coins have no memory of what side came up last. Each toss is totally independent of the previous one.
Proponents of ‘Martingale Strategies argue that in real trading, each trade isn’t independent of the previous trade.
Example: If you trade a breakout system, maybe after several failures success is more likely. The problem is, We Don’t Know in advance which trial will benefit from increased size. So increasing position size could leave you with a large loss; especially if you are increasing your risk per trade as your account is reducing in (£) value.
Whilst you can conceptualize where Larry is coming from with his ‘Winning Probability’ idea, Martingale strategies are potentially very dangerous if used consistently as a longer term position sizing strategy.
I’m not talking here amount ‘Averaging’ in on a trade incrementally. What Larry is saying is; if you lose say 4 times in a row, your 5th trade is way in your favour to be a winner.” POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS, IF NOT DISASTROUS. Please; don’t fall foul to this methodology.
#Some info adapted from Larry Sander’s website; http://www.tradelabstrategies.com

a ‘Martingale Strategy’ surely?

#Also Note: My trading simulator spreadsheets have an integral ‘Statistical Probability Win/Loss Calculator, so you can see statistically how many winners or losers in a row you can expect over the 500 random simulated trades, or a user defined number of trades, taking into account your win rate.
This is important because if you have a system with a win rate that is little over break even, you could potentially expect to have a large number of losses in a row, (which my expectancy calculator would depict). If you were using a Martingale strategy as your account equity decreased, this could be catastrophic. The words “Margin Call” comes to mind!

Summary:

A Trading metaphor;

“Envision in your mind’s eye an artist; one of the greats.

He’s standing in front of his easel that’s gently cradling his canvas; his vision.

His brush commands his right hand; an extension of his mind.

A Trading Simulator is but 1 colour in your palette of trading tools that can be accessed at any time to enhance & illuminate your ideal canvas.
This 1 ‘colouring’ tool might seem at 1st glance to play a small part in your ‘artwork;’ but importantly it can ‘Change Your Perspective’ in how you view your future outcomes.
Used wisely, a trading simulator helps paint a different picture that can instigate a new positive belief; & We Trade Our Beliefs!

Finally; I leave you with a quote by Richard Bandler (Co-NLP creator)

"The way we lead our lives is a direct result of how we view the future.

A Super Traders Testing Tool

All Super Traders trade within a structured framework, one that is coherent with his or her beliefs. [INTERNAL : MIND]

The Super Trader’s trading system is an alignment of his chosen ‘rule set’, his objectives governed by his vision. This is his ‘Real World’ mechanism that can convert his goals & aspirations, into his desired results; tangible monetary (£) gains.[EXTERNAL : BODY]

All trading systems require feedback to improve. All Super Trader’s incorporate a measurable systematic feedback loop. A processes that can monitor, evaluate, modify & develop various aspects of its structure. Various testing tools can be applied to help identify possible weaknesses within a system. One such tool is the
“Multiple Losing Streak Probability Calculator.” [DETACHED : HEART]

It is extremely important to note that one uses this ‘Losing Streak Probability Calculator’ within a conjecture of a ‘Super Trader’s State of Mind.’ A state of mind that is completely aligned & seamlessly congruent by his Beliefs, his Vision, whilst utilising considerable Feedback.

This ‘holarchic model’ culminates into a seamless balanced collective in;

“A Super Trader thinks feels & acts within the realms of PROBABILITIES.” Dow-Boy.

So, your chosen frame of reference whilst using this calculator should predominantly be to consciously focus within the realms of ‘Statistical Probability.’
Trading per say is NOT about ‘Winning’ or ‘Losing.’

Multiple Losing Streak Probability Calculator:- Technical Note:

My quest in the creation of this calculator was driven by two things.

A lack of accurate reliable data on the WWW. regarding ‘Consecutive Losing Streaks’.

My Bias towards ‘Right Sided Brain Function’, Creativity! I do enjoy the creative process.

The WWW. Lead me into various trading forums, websites & blogs which culminated in frustration in many ways. I won’t elaborate. I had to seek help & ‘custom build’ in order to create a ‘Losing Streak Probability Calculator’ that would provide accurate results.

So, with the help of some very clever coders I was able to bring my idea to life & co-create a spreadsheet for traders relating to losing streak probabilities. I asked one of the coders ‘BruceZ’ if he could (in a not too technical manner) describe how the implementation of his VB code worked within the dynamics of this spreadsheet. I asked this for two reasons.

To give you a broader understanding regarding the ‘Under The Hood‘ dynamics of its programming. Via this higher level of comprehension you can benefit & maximise your utilization of this Losing Streak Probability Spreadsheet.

CONFIDENCE. Confidence is the highest order belief within a Super Traders psychological makeup. It’s only with confidence that one can truly overcome fear. By increasing your knowledge, you increase your faith & confidence in its function & the accuracy of the data that this Multiple Losing Streak Probability Calculator returns; you will in turn have CONFIDENCE to make any necessary changes to your trading system you see fit; having 100% confidence in the calculators returned results.

BruceZ’s Coding Comments:

“Losing Streak Calculator.”
Two functions were written in Visual Basic which work with the Excel spreadsheet to compute the exact probabilities of runs of consecutive losses.

The first, called ProbRun, computes the probability of 1 or more runs of consecutive losses in a given number of trades for a given probability of a loss. This is computed by a recursive difference equation given in the code comments. For each trade, the previously computed probability that a run occurred by the previous trade is added to the probability that a run ended on the current trade multiplied by the probability that no run has occurred earlier.

The second function, called ProbRunMulti, works with the Quick Calc & is used for the matrix to compute the probabilities of multiple runs of consecutive losses within a given number of trades, where each run is separated by 1 or more wins. This also works by a recursive difference equation given in the code comments. In this case, for each trade, the previously computed probability that a given number j or more multiple runs occurred by the previous trade is added to the probability that a run ended on the given trade multiplied by the probability that an exact number j-1 of runs has occurred previously. This final probability is computed by subtracting the probability that j or more runs occurred previously from the probability that j-1 or more runs occurred previously. This requires retaining 2 sets of values for j or more runs, and for j-1 or more runs.

The first routine, ProbRun, conserves memory by implementing a circular array. This means that the amount of memory used does not depend on the number of trades. Instead, the array size will be equal to the run length plus 1, and the number of bytes will be 8 times this since double precision is used. So for a run length of 15, this array will use just 128 bytes.

The second routine, ProbRunMulti, could also have been implemented with a circular array which would have reduced the memory usage to a small fraction of what it currently uses, but it was decided that it was more important to preserve the simplicity and understandability of the code instead, and that the extra memory usage should not present a significant problem. In this case, the array size does depend on the number of trades. The array size is equal to 2*(number of trades + 1) since there are effectively 2 arrays being reused alternately to store retain the two sets of values. This will use 16*(number of trades + 1) bytes, so a million trades would use about 16 megabytes.”

Many Thanks BruceZ for his synopsis; & just to reiterate what BruceZ said; you can find additional comments within the VB code of all the spreadsheets.

Losing Streak Probability Quick Calculator

Hypothetically; one of your day trading strategies generates an entry signal approximately 3 times a day, which equates to 720 trades per trading year (3×5(Mon-Fri) x48 (Trading Weeks A year, Allowing for weekends & Holidays). This strategy has a win rate of 50%.

Question 1: “What is your statistical probability that within this 720(n) Trade run that your system will generate 5 consecutive losing trades in a row?
Do you know?

Question 2: “What is the statistical probability that it will also generate 2,3, or even ‘4 or more’ consecutive losing streaks of 5 trades all within this same (n) trade series length?
Would you like to know?

Well, now you can by using the DTL ‘Multiple Losing Streak Probability Calculator.’

IMPORTANT: Learn HOW To Question!
To get the most out of these spreadsheets you need to understand what questions to ask, & why you are asking them, in other words; “HOW to question.” These spreadsheets return accurate valuable data, a perfect characterisation of the ‘Pareto Principle.’ 90% of their power lies buried within the context & quality of how one questions the data!

A good Question Presupposes a good answer. The “would you like to know?” isn’t a good question; to know just for the sake of knowing. It has no positive effect,
[Internally : MIND] & [Externally : BODY].

So, maybe we should question “Why? Why would I want to know?” “Why am I generating 5 losing streaks more frequently than I should be statistically?” This again isn’t the best question to ask.

To just delve a little deeper here, as this is important & is ingrained deep within the psychological thinking of ALL Super Traders. “Why?” Why is very much associated with a negative attitude & a complaint riddled mindset. “Why did I get stopped out?” “Why did I not follow my rules?” “Why did I sell too soon?” These types of questions indicate a level of thinking that initiate & create a negatively charged neural net; which aid in nurturing damaging & destructive emotional responses.

REMEMBER:

“The words you chose in your questioning go a long way in not just what answers you receive; but in “WHAT YOU BECOME!”

The Question Is HOW?

One of my favourite quotes from Einstein is:

“Problems Cannot Be Solved By The Same Level Of Thinking That Created Them.”

Super Traders & successful individuals evaluate in a positive way, by asking “HOW?”
If you don’t question this way already; then do take this on-board earnestly. It’s hugely significant; a paradigm shift with vast implications.

Asking “HOW?” IS questioning at a higher level than the problem. All Super Traders are happy, content & grateful individuals.

They have learnt to ask “how?” & not “why?”

Again; Please take in the above seriously. It really is a huge key to your success as a trader & in living a truly fulfilling life. How you speak to yourself [INTERNAL : MIND], the words you use & HOW You Question & evaluate everything will determine your results.

Another friend of Einstein; Sir John Wheeler (physicist), famously said;

“The act of us searching, expecting us to see something, will ALWAYS create something for us to see.”

Again, it’s in HOW you question & evaluate. It’s not in how one OBSERVES things; it’s in HOW you PARTICIPATE with these spreadsheets that will determine what types of results & answers you will receive from this creative process.

For now; this concludes Pt1 regarding these “Losing Streak Probability Calculator Spread Sheets.” Later; in Pt2 I’ll discuss various ways in which you can get the most out of these spreadsheets; including:

“HOW to question,”

What kinds of questions you should be asking.

Several examples & different scenarios.

By utilising the above tips & guidelines that I’ll share with you in the coming Part 2, you’ll be able to view the data that these spread sheets reveal from a higher level, a ‘different’ perspective that WILL ensure you get ‘AN EDGE.’

I hope you enjoy using these very useful ‘Losing Probability Spreadsheets’ as much as I’ve enjoyed being a part in their creation.

Many thanks again to: SHG, BruceZ & Duncan Werner for all their help & their contributions in the making of these spreadsheets. Without their help, these sheets would not be here now.

To claim that the ‘Herman Miller Embody’ chair is the ‘World’s Best Day Trading Chair’ is a subjective affair, & thus this bold claim is but just one’s opinion (mine); but certainly this is a chair definitely worth considering if you are planning long hours in front of your monitors Day Trading for a living.

I personally have taken delivery of an ‘Embody’ here in the UK (Delivered 24/03/2011) & I must say that perhaps unwittingly, Herman Miller have created a truly Professional Day Trading Chair that really does tick all the right boxes; (although with a £1,000+, price tag, this is a chair that needs to be looked at from a Trading perspective; humm, the word ‘Investment’ springs to mind!

On a serious note; if you are spending nearly a third of your life (up to 8hrs a day) sat in front of your PC or desk within the realms of Trading for your living, then spending what seems initially is a hell of a lot of money for a chair, actually equates to really good value & a sound investment over the longer term.

So, let me here present my synopsis of the ‘Herman Millar Embody,’ & touch upon some of the chair’s many attributes.

Adjustable seat height & seat depth, tilt tension & arm adjustment (Up/Down, In /Out).

Environmentally friendly (Greenguard (Air Quality) & MBDC Silver (Chemically) certified).

Design

The Herman Miller Embody is clearly innovative in style & design, a chair created without compromise aesthetically & functionally; possibly the ultimate Ergonomic Trading Chair? It is fundamentally a task chair that has practically adjustable everything so you get 100% comfort no matter what size of frame & build you are. The Embody’s development team included input from 30 professionals with diversified fields ranging from bio-mechanics to physical therapists & vision experts. This chair was designed at the outset to be the best in its class & actually redefine the way people sit.

Back & Seat Support

The Embody’s back has an ‘alive’ ‘Kinematic Spine’ that mimics your spine, adapting to the natural shape & movement of your spine, constantly adjusting itself to your shifting positions & postures. This not only supports your body (with an almost floating sensation), but supports your mind as well. This Pixelated Support™ system, a matrix of pixels that work together in the seat & backrest conform to the sitter’s movement. Technically, this creates a ‘Health Positive Chair’ due to its ‘dynamic’ surface pressure distribution. (Dynamic surface pressure on a chair & back will provide more comfort, liveliness, & health-positive benefits than non-dynamic surface pressure. At least that what it says on the Herman Miller website)! With its backfit™ adjustment you can also gain a neutral balanced posture regardless of your spine curvature.

TRADER’S SIDE NOTE:

What I did find interesting being a Day Trader is the benefits of a slight reduction in heart rate sitting in the Embody chair rather than a conventional chair. All Day Traders are well aware that Trading is predominantly a mind game, a profession that requires one to constantly perform & control one’s emotions. Heart rate plays a very important part in mind, body & emotional stability; coherence. Anything that gives a Trader’s Edge needs to be looked at very closely.
In one of the above PDF research papers named ‘HM-Lower-Heart-Rate’; a commissioned study was carried out that measured 6 cardiopulmonary variables. (To cut a long story short), here are 2 quotes from that paper.

“Embody is the first chair design that significantly affects heart rate across a variety of office tasks, resulting in a positive impact on the cardiovascular system without altering work productivity.”

“Prediction of heart rate from BMI and weight indicated that the Embody chair reduced heart rate when compared to the conventional chair.”

So; a ‘Health Positive Chair’ that by design Reduces Heart Rate & ‘Increases Blood Flow’ (Sited to allow more oxygen to flow to the brain) etc. Sad to say, but this chair is getting interesting!

TRADER’S SIDE NOTE 2:

Another point I would like to mention that is trading specific. Often whilst trading, I need to shift my frame of reference, re-evaluate my positions as they move in real time. Sometimes I need to induce a ‘NLP’ technique; where one visually (within the mind’s eye) remove themselves from their current posture & look at themselves from a detached perspective, so as to review & analyse their current trading position (emotionally & physically) within a new conjecture.

The Embody’s reclining mechanism is really like no other.

It’s actually quite hard to describe the sensation it gives you whilst you gently recline back, but it really does enhance your thought processes whilst in a reflective mode, or simulating a detached perspective. This alone is a huge benefit for Professional Traders & one I haven’t experienced with the same intensity in any other chair.
Strange but true!

A Green Chair

From an environmentalist point of view this chair is landfill friendly!
Construction of the Embody has been accomplished with 40 percent recycled materials. Another big plus is that 98 percent of this chair is recyclable at the end of its life. What with the Embody having a 12 year warranty to boot, & GreenGard Certification relating to safer air quality & MBDC Certification; meaning all the components of the Embody have been chemically tested so that they are safe for the environment; then this is a chair that even ‘Green Peace’ would clearly love!

Distributors

Enough info regarding the chairs attributes. From the above I think any Day Trading Professional can deduce that this is a chair worth considering. But what’s the best way to purchase one?
Well, firstly let me state that I am a big advocate of internet shopping. I love Amazon & price comparison sites, but with this type of purchase things really do need to be different.

“You Really Need To Sit On One Before You Part With Your Money.”

Firstly, I wasn’t sure if it was the Embody or the Aeron (Another Herman Miller Classic Ergonomic chair) that I wanted. So, I looked for a local authorized distributor.
The company I chose was;

Burnham Workplace Ltd.
Website: http://www.burnhamassociates.co.uk/
Telephone: +44 (0) 1202 73 80 73
Email: office@burnhamworkplace.co.uk

The proprietor of Burnham’s Workplace Ltd is James Burnham. I believe this has been a family run business for more than 30 years & my first conversation with James instilled me with confidence. What I mean by this is that I asked a number of probing questions (having exercised due-diligence) regarding the Herman Miller Embody & Aeron chairs that I was looking to possibly purchase. James answered all of my questions in a very knowledgeable way. This wasn’t some typical sales person I was in conversation with but a proprietor of a very well respected office design & supply company that really knew his products & genuinely cared about the products he sold! I like this style; this ethic. If I was to part with more than £1,000s on a chair, I wanted 100 percent confidence in my chosen supplier.

I did actually visit Burnham’s & try both chairs out initially. To be honest, something just held me back from making my decision to buy there & then. I really needed to try the Embody ‘In situ’ sat at my trading desk. I asked James if this would be possible. Now here’s another reason why I purchased through Burnhams. James made me feel that my request was perfectly valid & arranged to deliver both chairs (Embody & Aeron) to my home to try at my convenience.

“This was (IS) service like the good old days!”

As A Note:
A large chain in the UK called ‘John Lewis’ also stock the Herman Miller range.

Question: Would I have gotten the same product knowledge from one of JL’s sales staff? Would both chairs have been delivered on a ‘try before you possibly buy ‘request? I think you know these answers.
Here’s the best bit. Sitting in the chairs at Burnham’s Showroom, I just wasn’t convinced which one to even go for! But; with the chairs now at my Trading Desk, it was now all so clear. The Embody was just so perfect in all departments. I mean really! 6 years of sitting in a Staples £50 Chair & now this! Literally there was only one thing to do; arrange my deposit! Well; actually two things to do; choose my fabric type & colour, along with aesthetic finishing materials.
The Herman Miller Embody is a chair for all serious traders.

“Sometimes In Life You Really Do Get What You Pay For.
The Embody Falls Into This Category.”

Negatives.
Only 2 points to mention here.

Price.
Whichever way you cut it, £1,000+ on a chair seems (is) a lot of money. If you are serious about your day trading (which you should be as it is a business), & you can understand from my above comments that this really isn’t any ordinary chair, but one of those ‘trader’s edges’ that you often hear about. Trust me on this; your money will be well spent. A chair that is scientifically proven to reduce your heart rate & help you function optimally in a health positive way cannot be underestimated.
(So actually; it’s not really a negative after all)!

Delivery / Lead Times.
This isn’t a fault or undesirable comment regarding my chosen supplier (Burnhams), as they delivered the same day the chair actually came into their possession. The lead time in the UK for the Embody at my time of purchase was 6 bloody weeks! Now, come on Herman Miller! I understand this is actually made in the USA. But; a premium product such as this, with its price tag to boot! You really would have thought its UK arm would have several of these in stock, ready to ship to their UK authorized dealers. I hope Herman Miller address this issue. It really is the only thing that lets this be a 100 percent thumbs up. Maybe in time or soon after writing this review things here in the UK might be different. I’m sure in the USA their lead times would be just days!

UK Buyers; Check Lead Times With Your Authorized Dealer Before Purchase!

Summary

I titled this review, “The World’s Best Day Trading Chair” & to be honest, this quite possibly is. This is a chair only for the Serious Day Trader; one that is constantly seeking an edge in any shape or form it comes.
I highly recommend the Herman Miller Embody as a Trading Chair without compromise.
Anybody here in the UK wishing to purchase a Herman Miller Embody can do no wrong by contacting James Burnham first on 01202 73 80 73. I highly recommend his ‘Old School’ level of customer service & thank him for making my purchase a very pleasurable experience.
Thank you James.
(You never know; maybe you might end up with Burnhams supplying you a new Trading Desk to complement your new Day Trading Chair!)
So there you have it. DowBoys Day Trading Chair, email, surfing & shopping chair is now a Herman Miller Embody!

This; is the 1st part of my ’3 part mini series’ dealing with the subject of goals, goal concepts & the art of goal setting for the Super Day Trader.
I like bullet point lists; they seem to be far superior for memory recall than huge paragraphs of text of ‘Shakespearian’ proportions.

So…… Here’s Pt1. Enjoy. Regards; Dow-Boy.

The Trader’s 10R Goal Cycle

Original Goal: (Eventually), We Can Release it.
Past Goal: Is To Reflect; Re-Evaluate; Re-Live It.
Present Goal: We Re-focus; Re-Frame; Re-Align It.
Future Goal: We Will Re-New; Re-Size; Re-Define It.

VISION: They say success is a 2 part process, with part 1 being, ‘You Must Know Exactly What You Want.’ Goals give you the trading vehicle to envision EXACTLY what you want! As the great Stephen Covey So eloquently puts it, One Must; “Begin With The End In Mind.”

INTENTION: We live in reality, yet it is a filtered ‘PERCIEVED REALITY.’ Goals for the Super Trader are used as a lens, shifting one’s ‘Frame Of Reference’ (His Thinking & Awareness) to envision new opportunities, guiding ones’ decisions within a structured ‘INTENTIONAL’ framework via conscious choice.

NOTE: The Important word, Choice. There is age old question “Are Traders Born Or Made?”
ANSWER: Neither! We are all products of choice!

DESIRE: Goals instigate a strategy to achieve a desired result. ‘Goals Come With Desire.’ With desire come goals. The greater your ‘Goal’s Desire,’ the easier it will be to change your old conditioning. Alter your old conditioning & you change your old habits. CHANGE YOUR HABITS, CHANGE YOUR RESULTS! Desire is VERY Important.

PURPOSE: Goals give you a sense of purpose; thereby directing one’s attention to ‘grow one’s awareness; conscious awareness. This relates among other things to the ‘Conscious Competence Learning Model.’

FOCUS: Goals are closely linked to ‘FOCUS.’ What is the most important part in a Super Trader’s Structure, his structure of excellence? ‘THE PROCESS!’ Goals help you to direction your focus (WITH CLARITY) on BEING! Being What?

BEING THE PROCESS OF TRADING!

PERCEPTION: By merely having ‘Goals,’ you instigate a ‘Comparative’ mode, so you can easily evaluate & make rational ‘Value’ judgements regarding your ‘PROCESS & OUTCOME Goals.’
The principle of perception is based on differences. So, what do we need to be able to compare. Start with a goal! All Super Traders quantify & qualify their performance. So all ST’s use goals!
“What’s measured improves!” Peter Drucker

FEEDBACK: Trading involves learning. Learning & improving partly involves repetition which needs considerable feedback. A ‘Super Trader’s Goal System’ always incorporates a ‘Feedback Loop.’

YOU NEED FEEDBACK IN ORDER TO IMPROVE; SO… YOU NEED GOALS!

ACCOUNTABILITY: Having goals & a goal process makes you purposeful, thoughtful rational & systematic. This transcends into the realm of ‘Personal Accountability’ having what is known as an ‘Internal Locus Of Control.’

HABITS FORMING: Goals are part of a ST’s consciously chosen system that helps ‘Reshape’ old negative self-limiting beliefs & habits that could be buried deep within his subconscious. Thus goals aid in the creation & formation of new habits.

QUESTION: What Are Habits?

WHEN THE BODY BECOMES THE MIND!

CHANGE: Goals help you change. It is said (via quantum law) that the environment is an extension of the mind. So importantly; if the World is shaped by our thoughts (potentiality), then ‘INTENTIONALLY’ shaping our destiny via goals & goal setting we will ultimately reshape our conditions & our environment, thus changing the events, circumstances & outcomes.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE TRUE POWER OF GOALS MY FRIENDS!</span

So, there you have 10 requisite reasons why ALL Super Traders use goals in their trading regime & why they are essential to a Super Trader’s success inside & outside the markets!

“I wish you well in your journey & in your trading.”

The Disciplined Super Trader.
What Exactly IS Discipline?

Discipline is a HABIT!
All ‘Super Traders’ have self discipline. Without discipline you cannot achieve success, in any field.
I will say this again;

“WITHOUT DISCIPLINE YOU CANNOT ACHIEVE SUCCESS, IN ANY FIELD.”

Having this ability to exert self discipline AT WILL on one’s self is one of the master keys to your success.
Discipline is a mix of Will Power, Persistence & Repetition; having the conviction to do what you must do whether you feel/want to do it or not.

The only difference in discipline between the 95-5; (95% of ordinary (Losing) day traders & the 5% of winning day traders is that if assumed that they both know what they should be doing to achieve consistent success; then only ‘Super Traders’ have the Will & Conviction to do what needs to be done, Repeatedly to achieve this.

This is the price you’ll pay for your success. Your will to do, what you must do, whether you want to or not.
Every action of a S.T’s self discipline strengthens the Habit of his self discipline; his pattern of regular behaviour. Discipline is a HABIT!

The following is THE MOST critical point to remember.

“EXPERIENCE HAS STRUCTURE!”

If you understand that there is a structure & an order within a ‘Super Traders’ repertoire of his trading action, it can be accepted that there MUST be a constant structure & framework being imposed &at work. Discipline is the governor of his structure, a finely balanced mechanism & collective, targeted to cut away anything that is unnecessary to leave a streamlined pre-configured format as to;
How One Must Act & Re-Act to anything the market can throw at him.

Leverage: For Fear & Discipline.
‘Super Traders’ understand leverage &are masters in the use of leverage, maximising their performance using various weapons within their arsenal. The main premise to using leverage within the structure of his Trading Universe is in the suppression of his own FEAR.

THE STRONGEST EMOTION OF ALL, FEAR, (FEAR OF A LOSS) CAN BE CONTROLLED.

The Super Trader’s knowledge that he controls his losses ALWAYS via stop loss placements & his position sizing models incorporated within his trading plan means he has a suppressed & controllable level of fear.

His leverage for discipline is achieved via his integration of his pre conceived Goals, Trading Rules & his Large Positive Dominant Vision of purpose. The ‘Super Trader’ is totally focused; aligned by his pre-determined goals, & responsible for his actions via his unequivocal adherence to his clearly defined rules. Yet goal setting & rules are his outer expressions of his self discipline.
These help in the creation & nurturing of his Self-Esteem, another attribute & by-product of his discipline associated to all ‘Super Traders’. All ‘Super Traders’ have a high level of self esteem, a by-product from his total commitment to Self Discipline.

SELF DISCIPLINE BUILDS SELF ESTEEM.
SELF ESTEEM REQUIRES SELF MASTERY.
SELF MASTERY IS SELF DISCIPLINE!

The Ingredients For Discipline.
Strength of character, conviction, persistence, repetition combined with his rules, goals & vision are all directly linked to the Super Traders’ beliefs & preconceived ideas about how the markets function via his experiences. Together, these ingredients form the Super Trader’s Discipline, shaping the Super Trader’s pattern of regular behaviour; now his Trading Universe is a Disciplined Universe.

The Super Trader’s Disciplined Universe.

Let me characterise 1st the ‘Super Trader’s Universe’ to you metaphorically, as there are many similarities & comparables to our own physical Planetary Universe.
For Clarity, let’s state that by definition;

THE SUPER TRADER’S UNIVERSE = “ONE THAT ENCOMPASSES EVERYTHING.”

Our own ‘Physical Universe’ is one that includes & encapsulates all forms of matter, in fact everything that physically exists from energy, momentum & the entirety of space & time; including all the physical laws & constants that govern it. In constant perpetual motion, this is a never ending expanding multi dimensional ‘fabric’ in action.
We can formulate that the Super Trader’s Universe = All The Super Trader’s EXPERIENCES (E),

THE SUPER TRADER’S UNIVERSE = ALL HIS EXPERIENCES. (E)

For it is through all the Super Trader’s Experiences that he defines all his beliefs & internal/external behaviours & emotions.
So if the Super Trader’s ‘perceived’ Universe is equal to the total sum of every experience based & founded upon his beliefs about how the markets function via these experiences & strategies (his behaviours); then his perceived Trading Universe’s ‘Gravity’ (G) must surely be the 1st four ingredients that make up his Discipline; IE, Strength of character, conviction , persistence & repetition.
Gravity or gravitation is a natural phenomenon by which objects of mass attract one another. This ‘Gravity’ IS the driving force behind the Super Trader’s DISCIPLINE. For it is this (G) which is responsible for holding everything in place, thus keeping his Universe’s structure proportional yet interwoven by its force of attraction, securing & protecting its mechanism, one designed & intended to realise constant profits.

WITHOUT DISCIPLINE THE SUPER TRADER’S UNIVERSE CANNOT EXIST.

(G)The Super Trader’s Gravity = (will power +conviction+ persistence +repetition).

If these ingredients are equal to ‘Gravity’ in our Super Trader’s Universe, then ‘Relativity,’(R) the phenomenon which is principally concerned with the large-scale effects of gravitation & governs motion & inertia, must be attributed to our Super Trader’s other ‘Ingredients’;
those of his Preconceived Goals, Trading Rules & Large Positive Dominant Vision.

All These elements must co-exist with one another, their combined force & energy causing change, influencing & affecting our Super Trader’s behaviour. Collectively these 3 ingredients are the governors of his Discipline.

(R)The Super Trader’s Relativity = (Pre-conceived Goals +Trading Rules + Large Positive Dominant Vision).

We can now formulate all the above as follows:

( Note: ⊇ means ‘every element of ).

Formula: (D) = (G) x (R) ⊇ (E)
Discipline  = (character + conviction + persistence + repetition) x (Goals + Rules + Vision) ? Experience.

To Summarise:
Through Discipline, we can define our actions. The more disciplined you are, the more positive your outcomes & actions will be; leading to more positive attached feelings & emotions. This ultimately positively & permanently reshapes our beliefs, in turn altering the charge & total sum of our experiences.

The Super Traders Universe & our own Physical Universe contain many parallels & similarities yet both hide infinite secrets & mysteries to taunt & tease us. Some may never be solved & some yet to be discovered.

The Super Trader sees every trading day, his trading arena through his inner beliefs, gained from his experiences.
A Trader’s Universe IS a Disciplined Universe. The presence of Discipline is essential to realise a constant & ever increasing flow of profits. It’s the key force that has the power to reshape his beliefs, alter his experiences in a positive way & ultimately manifest his pre envisioned utopian destiny.

A SUPER TRADERS UNIVERSE IS A DISCIPLINED UNIVERSE.

4. “As long as you know what it is you desire, then by simply affirming that it is yours – firmly & positively, with no ifs, buts, or maybes over & over again, from the minute you arise in the morning until the time you go to sleep at night, & as many times during the day as your work or activities permit, you will be drawn to those people, places, & events that will bring your desires to you.”
Scott Reed (African-American author of poetry, essays, & satiric novels, b.1938)
