Fancy can alternate stoic or funny, curious or take-it-or-leave-it, opinionated or sweet as pie, stock still or lightning fast. She’s got it all going on. Still-waters-run-deep kind of mare. These photos were taken from an angle she wasn’t used to seeing me and she went from clearly curious to “Okay, we’re done now.” I just love Fancy. She knows what she likes.

Equine Photographers Network chose this photo as Photo of the Week! When I look at this lovely sorrel QH enjoying his bath outside in the sunshine—making him glisten—I see my formerly mostly white Paint horse in my mind’s eye. He’s been letting his inner Pig Pen out to play these last few weeks in our cold and rainy weather so he’s more green, yellow, and gray than white and sorrel. I promise…as soon as the sun comes out, he’s in for one of these!

I’ve always loved this sculptural herd of wild horses running along the ridge at the Columbia River Gorge at Vantage. And, I’ve always wished for real herds instead, wondering why Washington isn’t home to them as it seems like a natural environment. I’ve driven by them many times, but today was the first time I stopped to hike up to see them up close. Each horse’s expression is different; all bodies are uniquely positioned; and they range in size. You can almost hear their hoofbeats and whinnies.

Nothing would give me more pleasure than photographing this type of relationship!
