I'm on a Delta flight that fortunately has Gogo Inflight WiFi. When I first learned about this I was excited, especially after learning that Google would be footing the bill for the holiday season.

Then it hit me. I'm on a Boeing 767 with 300+ people on it, all of them getting free WiFi. The service is going to be terrible.

I really wanted to see how well the service is before it gets bogged down by the masses, so as soon as we hit 10,000 feet I fired up my Macbook and immediately did a speed test.

The result, abysmal. Download is under .20 MB/s, upload speed didn't even register and latency was through the roof.

I was skeptical about paying $10+ for WiFi for a few hours, but now I know why. If it's free it will be useless. The entire plan will be on it hogging the very little bandwidth that is available.

So, thank you Google? I know it's a good gesture, but I think I rather pay for it.

Dear TSA, I've Had Enough.

This is being republished from: http://fedupflyers.org/?p=1

For those who may still be unfamiliar, please allow me to briefly explain what’s happening in the U.S.A. today. When a law abiding citizen wishes to travel out of any major airport in the country where the latest air transportation security procedures have been implemented, he or she will now be subjected to what can only be truthfully described as a virtual strip search. The federal government is using funds raised through the Recovery Act to stimulate the economy by installing expensive new Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) systems at airport security checkpoints throughout the nation. These devices enable screeners to see beneath travelers’ clothing to an extremely invasive level of detail. For example, the images are graphic enough to enable agents to determine whether a man has been circumcised, or whether a woman is menstruating.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is quick to point out that this program is optional. Individuals who decline this indignity, or “opt out”, will instead be physically frisked, which entails a federal security agent’s hands passing over the entire body, including the buttocks, breasts, hair, and genitals. The agent will explain the procedure beforehand, and the traveler is expected to consent and comply or else opt back into the AIT scanner. Otherwise, he or she will not be admitted to the secured side of the facility or allowed to board an aircraft.

On October 15, I was turned away from the security screening checkpoint at Memphis International Airport when I declined both AIT screening and the secondary “enhanced pat-down” procedure. I was attempting to enter the facility for my commute to Houston, where I’m based as a pilot for ExpressJet Airlines, doing business as Continental Express. I did, however, pass through a standard impulse induction metal detector without triggering an alarm, just as I have done approximately once per week at that same checkpoint (which happens to be in Terminal C – hence, “Checkpoint Charlie”) for the past four and a half years.

TSA announced the new screening policies last July. When we learned about the changes, many of my coworkers and I were deeply disturbed, especially as we discovered that this mistreatment was being mandated for crew members as well as passengers – even children! We discussed the various ways in which we might express our rejection of the new rules. Unfortunately, there had been no proposal published, and no opportunity for the public to comment. TSA had simply issued its decree, and it was already on the books. Because we didn’t want an incident like mine to be the first indication of our dissent, our initial concern at the time was to notify the company that we do not consent to having images of our nude bodies produced as a matter of course in performing the routine duties of our profession.

“Neither,” we wrote last August in a letter to our managers, “can we abide being stopped daily by government agents and physically molested,” as a reasonable alternative.

We also wrote: “While we take airline security very seriously, we do not believe the dubious benefits of these invasive measures justify the trade off in employee and passenger privacy and other rights and liberties. It is our view that reasonable levels of security within the air transportation system can and must be achieved without producing images of travelers’ naked bodies or subjecting them without cause to… unwelcome touching at the hands of federally employed airport security guards.”

The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution states:

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

I specifically draw the reader’s attention to the first eight words. Our nation’s founders clearly affirmed “the right of the people to be secure”. It’s equally clear that they saw the kind of wholesale, unprovoked assault against persons and privacy that is being committed within our borders today as a serious threat to that security – serious enough, in fact, to write it down in the Bill of Rights.

What is happening in the U.S.A. today is not safe. The things our government is doing do not make us secure or protect us. On the contrary, it is now necessary for us to protect ourselves from our supposed protectors. My wife and I teach our children to defend their bodies, and not to allow anyone to touch them in certain ways – not even friends or relatives. But if we wish to travel by air as a family, we must now deliver our children over to such abuse at the hands of strangers and tell them it’s okay because these are security guards who work for the government and wear uniforms with shiny badges. We will not. It is not okay. And we urgently implore our neighbors everywhere to protect themselves and their families as well.

My thoughts:

I was going to write my own piece on the subject, but this open letter to USA Today from the now semi-famous ExpressJet pilot who refused to work under such conditions does a good job of summing up my feelings on the issue.

Enough is enough. Call your Senator and tell them you expect them to do something about this.

This is getting out of control and it's not making us any safer, it's just providing the illusion that we are safer and increasing the power of the Federal Government.

I'm getting tired of hooking up my iPhone to my car to play the music I have on it, it get's annoying at times.

So I'm in the market for an iPod to sit in my car and just store all of my music. I need it to have at least 16GB to make it useful and I don't want to spend over $200 on it.

My only option is the new iPod Nano, but I just don't like it! I much prefer the last Nano version over the current but I have a thing against buying "old" products.

My other option is to buy the iPod Classic, it's got a massive amount of storage and it's a bit larger than I would like, but it's going to be sitting in the glove compartment of my car at all times, so who cares.

Problem solved, right? No. I also have a "thing" against buying Apple products when they are at their end of their cycle.

Before I buy anything Apple I check: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iPod_classic. I suggest everyone do the same since Apple has a policy of not announcing much in advance the launch of products, which means every time they launch a product a ton of people have buyer's remorse because just days earlier they dropped a ton of money on an instantly "old" product.

So I hope Apple launched a new iPod Classic soon, I doubt they will this year but I won't be taken as a sucker and make the leap of faith.

Signup for my newsletter I'm calling Deeper Thoughts on Mobile, Tech, Startups and Hockey (these are the things I'm most passionate about). You will receive a periodic email from me, nothing overwhelming and I will never share or sell your information.

I'm going to experiment with an email newsletter instead of posting to my blog. I use my blog and my Twitter account for posting small tidbits of information. This is easy to do and requires little thought and I want to share my thoughts in a much deeper sense. I could just post these types of things on my blog, but in the past I haven't found blogging to be much fun for me.

I also want this to be more intimate, therefor I'm limiting my newsletter to 500 subscribers for now. We'll see how it goes and I will reassess this limit.

You can signup on the sidebar of my blog, in case you overlooked it :)

I have a T-Mobile Nexus One, unlocked, rooted and running the latest version of Android 2.2 called Froyo. It has absolutely no scratches on it, looks like it's never been used. We use it for development testing here at MoFuse, the device has hardly ever left the desk.

I'm looking to get another Nexus One, running any version, doesn't have to be rooted or unlocked, it just has to be the AT&T version of the device.

So if you bought the device to use with AT&T and you're not happy with them, or their recent change to their data plan pricing and want to switch to T-Mobile let me know! I don't want to spend $550 to have the same exact device.

Email me: david@mofuse.com

This tweet from Sarah Palin is sad. Everybody remembers her pushing more off-shore drilling. How can she even begin to act like she wasn't for drilling where this disaster is happening?

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Palin was a strong advocate of drilling both offshore and in ANWR, a position that was repeatedly expressed her now-famous phrase "Drill Baby Drill."

In her October 2008 vice presidential debate with Joe Biden, Palin specifically took aim at him for opposing offshore drilling efforts.

"You even called drilling - safe, environmentally-friendly drilling offshore - as raping the outer continental shelf," Palin said at the debate.

"There - with new technology, with tiny footprints even on land, it is safe to drill and we need to do more of that."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed that the iPhone OS was made for a tablet during a chat with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the All Things D conference. Jobs said they were working on a tablet and thought, "this would make a great phone".

I originally criticized Apple (privately) for using the iPhone OS on the iPad. I wanted a shrunken MacBook, not an enlarged iPhone. In reality, we are all making phone calls on shrunken iPad's.

A few days ago I received a Powermat review unit for my iPhone 3GS and I had been using it to charge my iPhone every night when I go to bed.

It comes with the charging pad, or mat, iPhone case and a Mini-USB to USB cord. You simply plug the charging pad into the electrical outlet, put the case on your iPhone and then place your phone on the pad and it charges magically.

What I really like about this is that when I wakeup in the morning and reach for my phone I don’t pull it out of the wall since I usually check my email (it’s a terrible habit) as soon as I wakeup. I hate that my phone is tied to the wall and it doesn’t reach far enough for me to rollover into a comfortable position.

I don’t like taking my phone off of the charger until I’m ready to leave in the morning because the battery won’t last past 4pm if I do. So the Powermat allows me to rollover with the phone and reply to late night and early morning emails then simply throw it back on the mat until I’m ready to leave for the day.

Unfortunately for me, I don’t like the way most cases feel in my hand or in my pocket and I found myself taking the case off during the day and putting it back on at nighttime.

To be fair, the two piece slide-on case isn’t bad at all, it’s just my personal preference. Most people I know with an iPhone use a case that is much larger, bulkier or uglier than this one.

One issue more people may have with this product is the case completely covers the port on the bottom of the phone and replaces it with a Mini-USB port. They should have, if they could, replicated the iPhone’s port to make using other accessories, like a car charger, easier. I suspect Apple doesn’t allow this though and that is why it comes with a Mini-USB to USB cord.

I can see how people who are more tolerable to having a case on their phone could like this product. Every night I have to find my phone’s power cord, which usually falls behind my nightstand or I have to feel around in the dark to not wake my wife who goes to bed much earlier than I do. So using the Powermat made it much easier to just go to bed, and unfortunately get right back to work in the morning.

I wonder how long it will be until more phones come with this functionality built-in, like the Palm Pre. I'd also like to see the stats as to how many people have purchased the wireless charger for the Pre.

This was my first experience charging any gadget without plugging it in. It is clearly much easier and if it weren't for the case I would be using it and I would pay extra for it.

Excited for New iPhone Design, Sick of Current One.

Although it's not a drastic change, it's enough to keep me happy. The current iPhone design has gotten stale for me. I've been using each version from day 1 of their release and for the past two years, from 3G to 3GS the design has been the same, and I'm growing bored of it.

I'm a fan of the new design, albeit it's just like the change from 2G to 3G with just changing the back and sides of the phone. The flat back of the new design and the individual volume buttons are nice on the new design. I was never too big a fan of the curved backside.

Our Wedding Present to Ourselves... Finally.

For about 3 years now Stacia and I have been talking about getting bicycles, but we just never got them for whatever reason. Instead of getting each other a present for the wedding (which I never heard of before, but apparently she has) we decided to we would get bikes for the Summer.

We both got 2010 Trek FX 7.2 bikes. They're hybrid road bikes.

Here they are, the silver one is mine:

I haven't ridden a bike in a very long time so I'm excited to get on it this weekend!

New Design ... Again!

As you can tell, I get sick of things very easily. This is yet another redesign of my blog. I also redesigned my mobile site: http://m.dtb.me. I was using my personal mobile site as a proving grounds for not-yet released MoFuse features and new concepts. It quickly turned my mobile site into an ugly mess with so much non-related stuff on it. I'm going to try and stay away from doing that in the future.

Let me know what you think!
