Join us for a reading with Gregg Shapiro at the DC Center on September 16 at 7:00 PM.

Gregg Shapiro's debut collection of short stories, Lincoln Avenue, is published by Squares and Rebels Press. He is also the author of the chapbook GREGG SHAPIRO: 77 (Souvenir Spoon Press, 2012) and the poetry collection Protection (Gival Press, 2008). An entertainment journalist, whose interviews and reviews run in a variety of regional LGBT and mainstream publications and websites, Shapiro lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his husband Rick Karlin and their dog k.d.

With its twelve sharply observed stories filled with memorable characters and dialogue imbued with the pop music of the day, Gregg Shapiro reflects on what it meant to grow up gay in Chicago during the 1970s and 1980s. Relationships --family, boyfriends, and otherwise--are explored in stories such as "Lunch with a Porn Star," "Marilyn, My Mother, Myself," and "Your Father's Car." Only a gay Chicago native with a keen eye could give us such an insider's view of the Windy City from a more innocent time not too long ago. Mark your calendars for a reading by Gregg Shapiro from his collection of short stories, Lincoln Avenue.

Bears Do Yoga: Organizing and Connecting Community to Health Through Yoga
Michael Brazell, The DC Center

This workshop will discuss setting up a Bears Do Yoga program. We started our program here at the DC Center 2 years ago and have had a lot of success building community, moving into greater health, and offering a safe space for all to practice yoga. The original reason behind inception of the program were issues that many in the Bear and Trans communities were facing trying to participate in some of the local yoga studios.

Any that may want to facilitate a group in their area are welcome to attend. We typically have any where from 10-30 participants in each class. Even though the program was geared towards the bear community, we are an open space for ALL that want to attend. Yoga instructors, Fitness Professionals, Community leaders, and Community Center Leaders will gain focus on how to start a program, keep it running, and the basics of yoga to get the group started.

Starting a Bears Do Yoga program in your community is a great way to open members of the community to greater health, create a safe space for the practice of yoga, and break down barriers in the community.

Michael Brazell is a certified Yoga Instructor, Fitness Trainer and Sports Nutritionist. He leads the DC Center's Bears do Yoga program and teaches in various locations in the DC metro area.

The summit takes place July 20th and 21st at George Washington University. This is just one of the 40 workshops and two plenary discussions taking place over the course of the summit. Click HERE for more information about the summit, including registration, housing, workshops and events around and during the summit.

But it's also about fate, the search for Mr. Right, Kurt Cobain, circuit parties, class stratification in suburban Maryland, Space Mountain, the Book of Esther, the war in Iraq, Israeli dance, Jewish summer camp, Barack Obama, D.C.'s bar scene, the Holocaust, interfaith relationships, immigrant communities in Jersey City, Will & Grace, crystal meth, Sammy Davis Jr., and much more. Publishers Weekly praised it for "breaking new ground in gay fiction," while The Advocate named it one of the year's best overlooked books.

Wayne also wrote the novel Hard and contributed to such anthologies as Best Gay Stories 2010 and I Like It Like That. A longtime journalist who got his start at the Washington Blade, he has written for the Washington Post, Village Voice, Instinct, and elsewhere.
You're invited to join the DC Movie Bears on Wednesday, November 30, at the Landmark E-St. Cinema, for the 6:30pm showing of The Descendants. Join fellow moviebears for a quick dinner at Qdoba at 6pm. For more information, visit the DC Movie Bears Yahoo Group

SYNOPSIS: Matt King is an indifferent husband and fatherof two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family's land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.

REVIEW FROM THE NEW YORKER: The first thing you need to know about Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" is that it takes place in Hawaii. Not that we spend our time gazing at the glory of the islands; there's a lavish crane shot in which Matt King (George Clooney) points out the unspoiled patch of coastal land that his family has owned for generations, but Payne prefers to focus on the foreground, and on the battle of the Kings.

Matt and his extended clan are preparing to sell their swath of Eden for development, a deal that will bring them riches untold--so long as Matt, in his capacity as chief trustee, agrees to sign it. He seems distracted, though, and no wonder, for his wife, recently injured in a boating accident, lies in a hospital, sunk in a coma from which, he is told, she will never wake. Matt's first task is to break the news to his daughters, ten-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and her grouchy teen-aged sister, Alexandra (Shailene Woodley). Hitherto he has been, as he admits, "the backup parent, the understudy," and now comes his bid to assume the leading role.

This is fairly fresh terrain for Clooney, though it verges on the haplessness of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Watch Matt as he breaks into a puffing sprint, his gallop rendered not just unmanly but frankly girlish by the clop of his boat shoes, which seem to be compulsory for all citizens. The reason for Matt's haste is that, via friends, he has learned of Elizabeth's disloyalty. Before the crash, she was cheating on him with a real-estate agent named Brian Speer (Matthew Lillard), and, though Matt confronts her in the hospital, ranting vainly at her motionless form, what he really yearns to do is meet Brian, face to face. And what he really fears to do is take a look at himself.

In short, "The Descendants" is the latest exhibit in Payne's careful dissection of the beached male, which runs from Matthew Broderick's character in "Election" to Jack Nicholson's in "About Schmidt" and Paul Giamatti's in "Sideways." The younger creatures in the new film--well played by Woodley and Miller, with a special mention to Nick Krause, who triumphs in the role of Sid, Alexandra's stoner pal--may look baffled, but they are fighting to make something of their lives, whereas you get an inescapable sense that the lives of the older guys have already been made for them. Lillard's little-boy grin, though ideal for selling real estate, tells of panic rather than cheekiness, and Brian's encounter with Matt is not a clash of rutting males but a semi-polite standoff between two fleshy, faltering souls, striving to live up to the brazenness of their shirts.

We have seen such leisurewear before, on Frank Sinatra and Montgomery Clift, as they toured the local bars, in "From Here to Eternity." Both films are infused with the atmosphere of their Hawaiian setting, and its strange compound of chillout and treachery. Everyone remembers Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr rolling in the surf, but stay with that scene and you soon find it foaming with accusation and shame. Something similar happens to "The Descendants," with damp squalls and difficult mists nagging at the edge of people's amicable warmth. Both films conclude, too, with floral garlands cast into the ocean, though Payne provides an aftermath--a delicious downtime, in which Matt and his children sit on the couch with ice cream and watch TV. Death, which has loomed ahead throughout, begins to drift away behind them, and the film completes its journey: from eternity to here.

Many of you may be familiar with The DC Center's FUK!T campaign, the sex safer sex campaign as seen at some of your favorite DC hot-spots. You may have also been to the equally hot (and NSFW) website for the campaign dcfukit.org. Here you'll find information about safer sex and HIV in the District, as well as some pretty great photos of the models from previous FUK!T photo shoots.

We will be updating our website, and also our campaign, and we're looking for models for our next photo shoot! Please check out the website to see some of what we'll be looking for at the next shoot (partial nudity, for example), and let us know if you'd like to be a part of it! We're looking for people that are a part of the very diverse GBT community, and that represent it accordingly, so don't hesitate to ask to be a part! That is, ALL races, ethnicities, body-types, ages and gender identities are needed!

The next shoot will be on September 25th at Cobalt from 10AM to 1PM.

If you're interested, you must contact Brant Miller at brant@thedccenter.org, or call The DC Center at 202-682-2245 for the necessary information. Please do so by 5:00PM on Friday, September 23rd. Those that do not contact Brant beforehand will not be able to participate in the event.

Wayne Hoffman, gay author and bear extraordinaire, will be reading from his new novel, "Sweet Like Sugar" on Sunday, September 18 · 2:00pm - 3:00pm at Barnes and Noble, 4801 Bethesda Ave., Bethesda, MD.

In Yiddish, there is a word for it: bashert--the person you are fated to meet. Twenty-something Benji Steiner is skeptical of the concept. But the elderly rabbi who stumbles into Benji's office one day has no doubts. Rabbi Jacob Zuckerman's late wife, Sophie, was his bashert. And now that she is gone, he grapples with grief and loneliness.

Touched by the rabbi's plight, Benji becomes his helper--driving him home after work, sitting in his living room listening to stories. Their friendship baffles everyone, especially Benji's sharp-tongued, modestly observant mother, but Benji is rediscovering something he didn't know he'd lost.

The test of their friendship, and their faith, lies in the difficult truths they come to share. With each revelation, Benji learns what it means not just to be Jewish but to be fully human--imperfect, striving, and searching for acceptance.

Beltway Bears members for well over a year have supported the DC Center's safe sex outreach campaign: FUK|!t. They first began packing safe sex kits (condom, lube, safe-sex info) at Motley Bar, and then the Green Lantern. Not wanting to be behind the curve, we've decided to have our own parties too.

The Beltway Bears Packing Party takes place Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 pm at the home of Beltway Bear Greg Waksmonski, 4801 Kenmore Avenue Apt. #908, Alexandria, Virginia.

Greg has very kindly offered to host our first packin' party at his home in a semi-deluxe apartment in the sky-hi-hi, in Alexandria. Greg will provide Pizza and Soda. If you want something other to drink or eat/share, feel free to bring along. We'll probably be at it til 10p or so.

Synopsis: Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life -- an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he's gay and he's going to live life to the fullest --even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.
