The DC Center in collaboration with ETC invites you to attend our first event of the year, a play titled Charm on Thursday, January 26th 2017 at 8:00 PM at Mosaic Theater Company (1333 H STREET N.E., Washington, DC 20002)

The Play "Charm" is about:
Mama Darleena Andrews, a 67 year-old transgender woman and the inimitable etiquette instructor at "The Center," an organization for Chicago's homeless and LGTBQ youth. Her students are as diverse in background as they are in identity, united by a feeling of other-ness in the heart of a city that's left them behind. But for "Mama Darlin," triumph over poverty and prejudice begins with lacing up and fitting in--playing the part with class and with charm.

B'Ellana Duquesne (The T Party) stars as 'Mama,' inspired by the heartwarming true story of Chicago trans icon Miss Gloria Allen, under direction of visionary artist Natsu Onoda Power (The T Party).

Charm runs two hours and twenty minutes, with one fifteen minute intermission.
All discussions open to the public and begin immediately after the play ends.

Tickets are reserved at $15 a seat, and there will be 20 free tickets for those less fortunate.... contact shareese@thedccenter.org

July 28-30, 2017 | Washington, D.C.

No Fear ~ No Shame ~ No Hiding -
Just Celebrating Our Truth

ABOUT THIS CONFERENCE

Let's Mobilize Events' 2016 Masculine of Center (MOC) Conference is the unboxing of the MOC narrative. The weekend will consist of all facets of the other side of the identity narrative.

What is Masculine of Center
Masculine of center (MOC) is a term, coined by B. Cole of the Brown Boi Project. The term recognizes the breadth and depth of identity for lesbian/queer who tilt toward the masculine side of the scale. It includes a wide range of identities such as butch, stud, aggressive/AG, dom, macha, tomboi, trans-masculine, androgynous, etc.

Conference Goals
Butch, Stud, Boi, Trans-Masculine, Androgynous, etc - we are all a community. And it's time to celebrate all of the intersections and discuss what is important!

Empower and affirm our differences while embracing our common goals
Discuss the concerns and issues, while prioritizing what matters in the community
Learning how to embrace all intersection in which we live and thrive and connect with the family that defines the community
Learn how to stand firm against prejudice while walking in truth in the full light of day in all capacities of life.

Conference Theme:
Let's Mobilize - Know Your Truth

Today's political environment is in a state of flux, where members of the LGBTQ+ Community may have to battle not only previously won battles but battles that could potentially rock the very foundation of the LGBTQ+ Movement. Knowing Your Truth has now taken on a deeper meaning. Our truth is the very perception in which our lives are navigated and circumvented in the environment around us.

How far are we from a world of complete acceptance and tolerance? Are we equipped to mobilize to further our agendas? What are the barriers to the empowerment of our community? How accessible are the resources and can they assist in taking the community to the next level?

These questions will be explored through a mix of speakers, panel discussions, and workshops

The GenOUT Youth Chorus, now in its third season, is welcoming new singers at our January rehearsals, starting this Sunday, January 8, 2:00-3:30 PM. The GenOUT Chorus is open to all students (LGBTQ and allies) from ages 13 through 18. Our 2-fold mission is to give young LGBTQA people a voice and to connect those voices to community.

If students are not able to attend on January 8, they may also join on our second rehearsal, which is Sunday, January 22, 2:00-3:30 PM.

Since its founding in January 2015, the GenOUT Chorus has grown from 9 singers to over 20 (from 15 schools around the DC area), and we have performed at the Lincoln Theatre, the Kennedy Center, the White House, and at the 2016 GALA Choruses Festival in Denver.

There is a nominal registration fee ($90) to participate, but no one is turned away for an inability to pay (scholarships are available).

Rehearsals are typically held at the renovated Wonder Bread Factory, at 641 S St., NW (near the corner of 7th & S Sts., NW; just steps away from the Shaw Metro stop).

Please help spread the word about this opportunity to the young people in your GSA and school. We welcome anyone who loves to sing and who would be a great fit for our GenOUT community. Feel free to pass on my e-mail address to your students and parents.

The spring rehearsal and performance calendar can be accessed here:

The DC Center is in the process of launching a new therapy group focused on building healthy relationships for gay and bisexual men. The central topics this group will cover are learning how to recognize the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship and methods of developing strong relationships with romantic partners, family, and friends.

The group will be comprised of 10 sessions and some of the topics we will be addressing are as follows:
- psycho-education of healthy relationships
- defining an unhealthy relationship and what to avoid
- defining the Cycle of Violence and Gary Chapman's Love Languages
- the impact of trauma on relationships

The skills you will develop as a result of participating in this group would be beneficial in any relationship, not only a romantic or sexual relationship.

If you are interested in participating in this therapy group, please contact the group facilitator and The DC Center's staff social worker Sam Goodwin at samantha@thedccenter.org to schedule an intake meeting to see if this group fits you.

We're eager to get this group started and we can't wait to see you there!

National Geographic photographers have sparked change for over a century. Photographer Robin Hammond shares how platforms like Instagram are making it possible to amplify important stories and connect with audiences like never before--revolutionizing how we capture and consume world-changing photography.

Robin has been sparking change for his entire career, using his camera to record human rights and development issues around the globe through long-term photography projects. His work documenting the abuses under strongman Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe was featured in National Geographic magazine, displayed in an exhibit in Paris, and culminated in his first book, Your Wounds Will Be Named Silence. Robin has been awarded a W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant for Humanistic Photography, a World Press Photo prize, the Pictures of the Year International World Understanding Award, and four Amnesty International awards for human rights journalism.

National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Tomorrow, September 27, 2016, is National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NGMHAAD). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are aiming to increase awareness and knowledge of HIV/AIDS and its prevalence among the gay and bisexual communities as well as men who have sex with men (MSM).

Although they only account for 2% of the population, gay and bisexual men represent 57% of people who are living with HIV in the United States and two-thirds of annual diagnoses. Nearly 1 in 7 gay/bisexual men and MSM have HIV and do not even know it. This is where NGMHAAD and The CDC come in! There are 3 things that you can do to protect yourself and your partner.
1. Get tested- Being aware of your HIV status will help you know what further steps you should take to ensure your safety and your sexual partners' safety. You can visit this website to find a testing center near you!
2. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)- PrEP is designed to protect against HIV the way birth control prevents pregnancy. It is a daily dose of medication and takes several weeks to become active in the system- and will only remain active if continuing to be taken daily. If you believe you may be at risk for HIV due to risky behavior, PrEP may be a good option for you. It does not cure HIV and is not meant to be used instead of condoms. Continue to use condoms, limit your number of sexual partners, and do not share needles.
3. Have a conversation- Be honest with yourself and your partner about your status and your sexual history. These kinds of conversations are certainly not easy to have, but you and your partner's health- and life- are more important than having to sit through an uncomfortable conversation. It is very likely that if you confidently approach the topic, your partner will follow your lead and be open to talking about it. For more tips on how to begin this dialogue, visit this page.

NGMHAAD is aimed at providing gay/bisexual men and MSM the tools to improve their health through education and awareness.

Today, there are more HIV prevention and treatment options than ever before. Familiarize yourself with these methods because your health and your life matter.

This August, The DC Center for the LGBT Community will be launching two new mental health support groups: Queer Women Working Through Trauma, and Gay and Bisexual Men Working Through Experiences of Assault. Both groups will run at The DC Center (2000 14th Street, NW Suite 105) and will be closed groups, which means that membership to both groups will be closed after the first few sessions. Each group is described in detail below:

Queer Women Working Through Trauma: This group will run the first and third Thursday of the month, with the first group session scheduled on August 4th, from 5 PM - 6 PM. This group will have a focus on processing and making sense of individual trauma as a group through telling stories through narrative therapy techniques and other behavioral processing activities. Participants will also focus on the mind-body connection throughout the course of the group, engaging in art and expression activities, deep breathing, gentle stretching and other physical/tactile exercises to help process through trauma responses while creating accessible coping strategies. The group will run for 10 sessions.

Gay/Bi Men Working Through Experiences of Assault: This group will run the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, with the first group session scheduled on August 9th from 5 PM - 6 PM. This group will have a focus on working through the trauma of surviving a physical or sexual assault. Psycho-education about the deep impact that an assault can have on an individual's life and coping mechanisms will be discussed, and new strategies for coping with physical and emotional reactions to participants' assaults will be introduced. Feeling safe in the world and making sense of each individual trauma will also be a primary focus. Group members will evaluate the reality of emotions, behaviors and actions through various therapeutic activities aimed at increasing resilience and strength. The group will run for 10 sessions.

If you, or someone you know would like to be a part of either group, please contact our Staff Social Worker, Sam Shinberg, LGSW at samantha@thedccenter.org.
