The Steve Pearce Legacy: Rising Debt and Limitless Hypocrisy

Steve Pearce's announcement today smacks of the same kind of hypocrisy New Mexicans heard over and over again during his time in Congress during the Bush Administration.

"With his reckless fiscal leadership having helped create the problem, Steve Pearce's rhetoric about fighting for New Mexico families just doesn't match up with reality," said Andy Stone, Western Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Pearce's record is dripping with the kind of hypocrisy that New Mexicans rejected in the last election."

Despite all of his rhetoric about the economy, Steve Pearce and George Bush's reckless leadership created the economic crisis, growing the federal debt by $2.3 trillion from $3.5 trillion to $5.8 trillion;
Pearce talked a good game about supporting our men and women in uniform but voted against funding for veterans' programs 14 times, even opposing a bonus for U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan;
Pearce voted against border security funding and agents at least seven times despite giving lip service to the need for border security;
Pearce hailed the decision to award a COPS grant to the Las Cruces Police Department, but voted to slash Community Oriented Police Services funding; and
Pearce said he opposed privatizing Social Security in his 2002 campaign, but then turned around and advocated for President Bush's risky privatization plan.

Cantor Ramps Up Hypocrisy on High Speed Rail

Republican Minority Whip Eric Cantor ramped up his hypocrisy on Virginia's high-speed rail today, saying he doesn't "see any inconsistency" in supporting funding for the project, despite voting against the funding, and excluding it from his own stimulus proposal.

"Representative Eric Cantor not only voted against funding high-speed rail in Virginia, he excluded it from his plan," said Jessica Santillo, Southern Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Representative Cantor's hypocritical attempts to take credit for high-speed rail funding that he tried to kill show how out of touch he is with Virginia's needs."

Representative Cantor's voting record and actions show that he was a lead opponent of the economic recovery package that provided this high-speed rail funding, and worked to defeat the measure on Capitol Hill.

Roanoke TV Station Refuses to Air False NRCC Attack on Perriello

WDBJ-TV, a Roanoke television station, refused to air a false National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) attack ad on Congressman Tom Perriello (VA-05). The false NRCC ad used information about the clean energy jobs bill that the independent, nonpartisan organization FackCheck.org called "wrong."

"The NRCC has a track record of running ads so deceptive and misleading that local TV stations refuse to air them or have to remove from the airwaves," said Jessica Santillo, Southern Regional Press Secretary. "Clearly, Washington Republicans realize that the truth is not on their side so they resort to deceptive and false attack ads. Virginians deserve to hear the facts about how this bill will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, not be subject to scare tactics."

Hypocrisy Schocker: Aaron Schock Awards COPS Funding To East Peoria That He Voted Against

During the event, Congressman Schock claimed "here in East Peoria, the police department, they make great investments in their people, and it only makes sense to continue to invest in the technology and tools they have in order to keep the citizens of East Peoria safe and police officers safe in the line of duty."

"Opposing much needed law enforcement funding is bad enough, but it is simply outrageous for Congressman Schock to then hypocritically take credit for securing the very money he voted against," said Gabby Adler, the Midwestern Regional Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. As recent polling makes clear, the American people want common-sense solutions not the Republican Party of No's obstruction, lack of ideas, and commitment to the failed policies of the past. Republicans should stop banking on failure, roll up their sleeves, and start working with the President and Congressional Democrats to turn the economy around.

As NBC reported, "Buried inside all three polls is this finding: Opinions about the Republican Party are at an all-time low. What's more, according to the ABC/WashPo survey, Americans trust Obama more than congressional Republicans on health care (55%-27%), the economy (55%-31%), the deficit (56%-30%), and combating terrorism (55%-34%). To put it simply, the GOP's take on Obama's poll numbers is a lot like the owner of a 1987 Buick pointing out the dents and potential engine trouble of a 2008 BMW sedan."

DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on a central provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act:

"For more than 40 years, the Voting Rights Act has made America a more perfect union by correcting injustices of the past that prevented too many citizens from enjoying the full blessings of liberty.

"Today, the U.S. Supreme Court acted with wisdom by refusing to strike down the hard work of Congress in reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act. The court's decision today underscores the importance of having a President, a Congress, and Supreme Court Justices who recognize the necessity of the Voting Rights Act and will take actions necessary to safeguard it in the future."

Republican “Party of No” Leadership Says “No” Health Care

While Americans worry about whether they can afford to get well, millions more wonder if they can afford regular health care to stay well.

The average American family already pays an extra $1,100 in premiums every year for a broken system that supports 46 million uninsured Americans. Health care premiums have risen three times faster than wages. Rising health care costs put American companies at a competitive disadvantage in a global economy and small businesses are being squeezed financially by costs.

This Congress alone, the Republican Party of No has a long record of opposing common-sense health care measures including health care for 11 million American children, investments in Health IT, controlling health care costs, strengthening Medicaid, regulating tobacco, life saving research, community health centers, and providing COBRA coverage for Americans who have lost their jobs. Republicans "answer" to the health care crisis that is driving costs up for hardworking Americans is to "just say no" and protect the status quo.

Republicans' "just say no" approach doesn't help hardworking Americans with a health care system they can afford and good choices to keep their families healthy. We need a uniquely American solution that builds on the best of what works, fosters competition among insurance plans, and provides patients with quality choices.

HEALTH CARE FOR 11 MILLION AMERICAN CHILDREN - Expanding the extremely popular State Children's' Health Insurance program provides cost-effective health coverage for four million children whose parents earn too little to provide their own insurance, but too much to qualify for Medicaid. AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT - Investments to bring America's health care system into the 21st century with information technology, which is proven to reduce costs, increase quality, and save lives. Modernizing America's health care system will also create hundreds of thousands of jobs. The Recovery Act protects healthcare coverage for millions through Medicaid and millions more who have lost their jobs in this recession by providing up to 9 months of subsidized COBRA health insurance continuation coverage. Republican Whip Eric Cantor Compares Obama to Putin

Another desperate attack:

The No. 2 Republican in the House on Thursday compared President Barack Obama's plans for the auto industry to the policies of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin [...] "It's almost like looking at Putin's Russia," added Cantor, the GOP's House whip.

Mark Kirk to China: Don’t Trust America

Has Congressman Mark Kirk forgotten his responsibility to support and defend the United States? In repeated public statements, Congressman Kirk outrageously admitted to going to China and telling foreign investors to not believe the United States Government.

"After helping get us into this current economic crisis by supporting President Bush's failed economic policies, Congressman Mark Kirk went to China and told Chinese officials that the American government was not to be trusted, said Ryan Rudominer, National Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Congressman Kirk's questioning of America while representing our government in China is incredibly irresponsible and endangers the American economy. These are serious times, Congressman Kirk needs to get serious about his support of the American economy, especially when Kirk is representing his country in China."

According to the Straits Times, Congressman Mark Kirk mentioned in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, that he told Chinese officials "the budget numbers that the U.S. Government had put forward should not be believed."
