November 20, 2016 marks the 16th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). It was started by Transgender activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a tribute to Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed as a result of anti-transgender hatred in 1998.

The DC Center is looking for six volunteers who are interested in offering their time to prepare a memorial service for those we have lost due to bigotry, hatred, and violence. Volunteers are needed from 5:15 PM- 8:30 PM at The Metropolitan Community Church of Washington (474 Ridge St. NW Washington, D.C. 20001).

If you are interested, please sign up here.

The DC Center takes it to Church!!!

It is not often that people think of the church and the LGBTQ communities interacting in a positive light. The traditional church has been a place of hurt and pain for many of the LGBTQ people due to rejection and misunderstanding; but times have changed! We now have our own churches and spiritual centers. Unity Fellowship is a staple in the affirming spaces of Faith in D.C. and the DC center is happy to join them this Sunday, September 25th, for an intimate time of music and fellowship.

There will be no sermon, just music and dance! This is a time of celebration and healing. Unity is unique in it's appeal to other religions outside of the Christian Faith. Often you will find Buddhists or Muslims there to join in the spiritual fellowship where the music is life changing and all spiritual experiences are recognized and respected.

Pastor Abena McCray is a classy lady with a huge voice. Her demeanor is a testimony in its self that "God is LOVE and LOVE is for EVERYONE!" She serves as a Chaplin for Howard University and is a very learned woman with a heart bigger than the elegant body that supports her being. She started out as a major jazz singer and never forgot her gospel roots. She is one the few female pastors in the D.C. area and she founded this church years ago! The church is home to many LGBTQ people and her phenomenal choir, Agape Praise! Unity Fellowship is a living expression of acceptance and support!

This Sunday Her entire music program will be featured singing contemporary and traditional gospel! I will be on the piano and there are a few special guests joining the program as well! It will be a time of love and music. The DC center will be doing outreach and education on PrEP sponsored by DOH and promoting The DC center's new app that can connect people to PrEP services.

PrEP is a daily pill taken by individuals to prevent the spread of HIV infection. This little blue pill has the power to prevent someone who is negative from becoming positive if taken as suggested. PrEP or Truvada has a 92% to 99% efficacy rate! Most clinical trials continue to show 100% success which is a pharmaceutical miracle! PrEP works regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. PrEP is equal opportunity protection against a virus that does not discriminate. There are minimal side effects and multiple benefits to learning about this new medical breakthrough.

The concert starts at 3 pm and the church is located at 474 Ridge St. NW Washington, DC 20001 (MCC). This is a safe space and all are welcome, see you there!

If you have any additional questions, feel free to email me at Jazmin@thedccenter.org and be sure to check out The DC Center's BePrEPed app for android phones at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.canic.beprepped or for iphones at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bepreped/id1099867557?mt=8

Come out on June 17, 2016 at 8pm to The Human Rights Campaign Building Reel Affirmations XTRA: Our monthly film series screens "American Vagabond". To purchase tickets click here.

In much of America, progress in HIV/AIDS treatment and improvement in education may suggest the worst is behind us, but every year 50,000 Americans are still diagnosed with the virus that causes AIDS. Astonishingly, nearly half of them live in the South, where the AIDS epidemic has taken root in rural communities, and is one of the leading causes of death among black women.

Wilhemina's War is the story of Wilhemina Dixon, an uneducated daughter of sharecroppers who becomes a force in her family's fight for survival from HIV and AIDS. Shot over the course of five years, the film bears witness to the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of tremendous adversity.
Wilhemina, or "Mina," as everyone calls her, knows little about public policy, but a great deal about caring for the sick. Five of her family members are living with HIV, and she is the caregiver for her daughter, Toni, a drug addict, and her teenage granddaughter, Dayshal, born with HIV and now the victim of online bullying.

While Wilhemina struggles to save her family, South Carolina politics only increase her burden as Governor Nikki Haley rejects billions of federal dollars available through the Affordable Care Act, a decision with devastating implications for those in need. Undaunted, Wilhemina soldiers on, taking a cue from her state's motto: While I Breathe, I Hope.

Emmy award winning journalist and Professor June Cross finds Wilhemina, a one woman army fighting against a systemic dehumanization that's the result of centuries of racism, and lack of access to drugs and treatment. Her story touches upon many of the structural issues that contribute to the alarming rising trend of HIV-positive women in the South: lack of education, lack of access to quality healthcare, lack of transportation, and silence and stigma in the local church congregations. This urgent documentary lays bare the intersection of poverty, race and politics with women's health and security in the rural south, while showing determination in the face of adversity, and the triumph of the human spirit. Essential viewing for African-American Studies and Public Health courses.
