The second issue of Batman and Robin manages to accomplish an awful lot in an effortless fashion. What the comic provides is something so simple that it seems obvious and yet it couldn't have been executed any better. The comic is essentially about Dick Grayson and Damien Wayne not living up to their new jobs, physically or mentally. The comic frames everything around a couple of new villains and the hint of a larger plot but the main story just uses these developments to put the new Batman and Robin in a very compromising position early on in their relationship and new roles. It's simply a terrific comic.

There are three comparisons to this story arc that might come to mind when reading this new series. First, Knightfall, Dick Grayson's first crack at becoming Batman, second, Batman and Son, Damien's arrival on the scene and RIP, Bruce Wayne's final adventure as Batman (for now).

Thus far, this comic does something very different than all three of those stories with these characters and style. With Knightfall, Dick doesn't struggle with being Batman, he struggles with the mental anguish of having to deal with scum night after night without an end. With Batman and Son, Damien is an arrogant gnat who seems to want to agitate and couldn't care less about the "job" at hand. Finally, with RIP, the general story is layered with red herrings and mystery that it just wasn't possible to read it once and "get" everything in a straightforward manner.

In this comic, Batman and Robin show at the police headquarters to talk to Gordon when a jailbreak begins to take place in the holding cells. Batman and Robin spring into action and completely fail. Gordon even has to draw his gun to restrain Robin from beating a villain to death. In the process another villain sneaks in and kills a suspect. In the fallout of all of this Dick is filling with complete doubt about his ability and he is all too aware that those around him know he is faking the role of Batman. He's essentially lost his audience before ever getting started.

The development with Dick is tremendous. The comic just tells a plain old story about Dick and everything not going well in his role as Batman. This is ground that Knightfall never really covered. Dick is a capable crime fighter and good detective, but it's the cops, Gordon and Robin that see him as a shallow replacement and his confidence is completely shaken as a result. This is where the role of Alfred is crucial and is used perfectly here. Alfred provides a pep talk and gives Dick a way to continue on as Batman without simply hoping people embrace him. Alfred also reminds Dick of just why he needs to continue even though Damien clearly has given up with working with Dick.

The comic digs so deep into the reasons why a Batman is needed and why Dick is the one who is best suited for the role. However, the comic is at its best because it so clearly illustrates how the surrounding characters drop their trust in him page to page. To read this issue you could easily see Dick completely giving up the mantle quickly. On the other hand you'd have to wonder if he this is the beginning of his turnaround and everything might start clicking in short order.

The art in the comic has a quality that is so timeless. To look at some panels you'd swear it was right out of the 1960s TV show, but on the other hand you see some other panels where it looks like a futuristic story. The art also takes its character creation to another level when Batman is fighting the man that appears be to three men connected to the same torso. You have to see it to believe it.

This issue is a great one. If you have any interest in Dick Grayson or Batman then this comic manages to break both down to their very foundations. In the process the comic has some interesting villains and manages to add more depth to the character of Damien. He's not just an arrogant, spoiled brat. He has intentions and ambition, just as the other Robins had before him. This is a must read.

Dark Reign Update XXII

Hey guys! We’re back for another action-packed Dark Reign update! Every week we’ve been recapping and reviewing Marvel’s Dark Reign crossover event, and the number of comics just keeps growing! There are nine titles in the mix this week–some super awesome, some ehhh–so hold onto your hats and be prepared–I try not to give too many details away, but there are SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Oh my god you guys! “American Son” has been so awesome! Unlike some titles under the “Dark Reign” banner that seemingly have a tenuous connection to the main storyline, it makes total sense to include Spidey–he has so much history with the Osborn family (uh . . . I think. I’m kind of confused as to how “Brand New Day” affected everything) that it adds an additional layer of emotional resonance to the story. Amazing Spider-Man #598 is the next-to-last issue in the “American Son” story arc, and it finds Spidey being tortured by Bullseye and Osborn after being sold out by Harry Osborn–who has joined his father to help his pregnant girlfriend, Lily, escape the effects of the Goblin serum!

Norman wants Harry to join the family business–as superhero American Son! But if you know anything about Norman Osborn, you know that not everything is what it seems. Still, I was shocked by a couple of reveals, which show how far Normie will go to manipulate his son for his own selfish, grandiose dreams. Amazing Spider-Man #599 will hopefully show Harry destroying his father!

I wasn’t sure if I’d like Dark Wolverine #75–I hadn’t really warmed to the character of Daken, Wolverine’s long-lost son. But now I’m intrigued by him and interested in where this story is leading.

First, let me say that it’s really weird to see someone else in Wolverine’s original costume. As an old-school Uncanny fan, I realize I still have that knee-jerk warm feeling when I see him. But Daken is not a scrapper with a heart of gold. He’s a vicious, selfish schemer, and a crafty strategic thinker who is setting up Bullseye for a huge fall. Why? Is it part of a larger plan, or does he just like chaos? Also, he can manipulate people by releasing pheromones–and it’s implied that he will use women–and men–sexually to get what he wants! Innnnnteresting. I can’t wait for Dark Reign Wolverine #76.

Dark Reign Hood #2 was one of the comics that was ehhh instead of super awesome. I don’t really care about The Hood, and his personality and story seem fragmented from title to title. In New Avengers he’s been totally taken over by Dormammu. In the Cabal, he’s the “super” villain who seems completely out of his league when grouped with Dr. Doom, Namor, and Loki. In his own series, he’s supposed to be an ordinary hood who’s tormented by his conscience and trying to take care of his sick mother while balancing a family with a life of crime.

In short, it seems like he’s not a compelling enough character–or important enough to enough creators–to have a solid through-line. He even looks totally different from book to book, and not just because he “demons out” a lot. It makes it tough to care about the character, and his solo storyline isn’t anything new or exciting. Perhaps Dark Reign Hood #3 will prove me wrong.

Secret Warriors #5 hits the ground running and doesn’t stop! Nick Fury has recruited the old guard–his former Howling Commandos–and they’re attacking H.Y.D.R.A. to try to jack some helicarriers for their own uses!

Of course, H.Y.D.R.A. isn’t going down without a fight, and Fury’s forces are quickly outnumbered. The tide looks like it might turn at the end, when Fury’s Secret Warriors teleport onto the scene, right when some H.Y.D.R.A. dude has his boot on Fury’s neck! This is a nice enough action comic, and the artwork is great. It was nice seeing the “old guard” be sneaky and take out some young whippersnappers, but I could probably take or leave Secret Warriors #6.

The last title I’m going to cover today is Thunderbolts #133. I don’t have any history with this title, but I know that most of the original Thunderbolts, and their premise (bad guys posing as good guys), have moved on over to Dark Avengers, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s caught my attention, so far! Turns out the new Black Widow, leader of Osborn’s Thunderbolts, is actually reporting to another boss–a great reveal at the end of the comic! However, her teammate Ghost has caught on, so who knows what will happen next.

In other news, Osborn’s goons are trying to clean up the streets by clearing out the homeless, and cracking some skulls when they feel like it. This prompts the re-emergence of former Thunderbolts member Songbird (who I had to look up on Wikipedia–she looks like a combination of Dazzler and Phoenix). Oh, and it turns out that the new Ant Man totally faked his way in. And now wants out. Good luck with that, buddy–see you in Thunderbolts #134.

Green Lantern: First Flight To Premiere At SDCC

Media Release -- Green Lantern: First Flight, the highly-anticipated fifth entry in the popular DVD series of DC Universe animated original PG-13 movies, will have its world premiere at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday, July 23, 2009.

More than 4,000 fans will have the opportunity to see Green Lantern: First Flight on the big screen five days before the latest DC Universe film is distributed on DVD and Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def. The film will premiere in the San Diego Convention Center’s Ballroom 20 at 8:00 p.m.

A panel comprised of filmmakers and voice cast will be presented on the following day, Friday, July 24. Details on that panel and its participants will be announced next week.

Acclaimed actor Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) fills the lead voice of Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern. Meloni is joined by fellow Emmy Award nominee Victor Garber (Milk, Titanic) as the villainous Sinestro, Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as the voice of Boodikka, and Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs) as Kilowog. The cast also includes Juliet Landau (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), John Larroquette (Night Court), Kurtwood Smith (That ‘70s Show), and David Lander (Laverne & Shirley).

Produced by animation legend Bruce Timm, Green Lantern: First Flight is helmed by heralded director Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman, Superman Doomsday) and scripted by four-time Emmy Award-winning writer Alan Burnett (The Batman).

Green Lantern: First Flight finds Hal Jordan recruited to join the Green Lantern Corps and placed under the supervision of respected senior Lantern Sinestro. The earthling soon discovers his mentor is actually the central figure in a secret conspiracy that threatens the philosophies, traditions and hierarchy of the entire Green Lantern Corps. Hal must quickly hone his newfound powers and combat the treasonous Lanterns within the ranks to maintain order in the universe.

A co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation, the illuminated hero’s first-ever full-length animated film is set for release by Warner Home Video on July 28, 2009. Green Lantern: First Flight will be available as a special edition 2-disc version on DVD and Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def, as well as single disc DVD.

I’m a little late with this week’s Graphic Content “book club” meeting, so let’s get right to it! We’re at Fables TPB Vol. 8: Wolves, which–I’m starting to sounds like a broken record–is my favorite Fables trade paperback so far! As usual: since this is a book club, we assume you’ve done the required reading, so SPOILERS ARE AHEAD!!!

Fables TPB Vol. 8: Wolves signals the triumphant return of Snow and Bigby from the backburner to a major story development: they reunite and get married! But let’s back up. The story starts with Mowgli combing through a frozen Russian fishing village, searching for Bigby, who left Fabletown and Snow when it turned out he would be separated from her and their cubs. Turns out their children don’t look quite human, so they were required to move to the Farm–the one place Bigby is not allowed. So after leading Mowgli on a fruitless chase, Bigby finally lets himself be discovered, in a remote cabin in Alaska. Where he is not alone. Hello! Turns out he’s been numbing the pain with booze and a hot chick named Sarah Tanaraq.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Snow has been busy playing mother and father–literally–as she has been sending her children presents from “Daddy” every holiday, taking family photos to “send” him, and answering their letters in his stead. The children are growing up quickly, and are hilarious as they struggle to maintain their human forms. Once they can do this for a month, they’ll be allowed into the Mundy world, but Aunt Rose isn’t making things easy for them, testing them at every turn!

So Mowgli convinces Bigby to come back with him, as Prince Charming has a job Bigby can’t refuse: travel up to the Cloud Kingdom and drop down into the Homelands to send the Adversary a very important message: don’t f$%& with Fabletown! To get his point across, Bigby blows up the Magic Grove and makes his getaway via giant beanstalk. Awesome. In return, he and Snow are awarded property adjacent to the Farm, where they can raise their family in peace. And in return for bringing back Bigby, Mowgli earns the freedom of his friend Bagheera. More awesome!

The extra story shows us a day in the life of Cinderella, special agent of F.A.B.L.E., as she tries to get the momentary king of the Cloud Kingdom to sign a treaty with Fabletown. Reading all the twists and turns and witnessing Cinderella’s ingenuity and plain, old-fashioned cussedness was delightful–I hope we see more of her in the future.

On to the questions:

Were you surprised that Bigby as shacking up with another woman?

EF: I was surprised, just because we never saw him with women before Snow, so I kind of thought he didn’t bother with that unless he was really in love. However, the rebound fling is a classic, and I guess no one is immune. At the end of Sarah’s part of the tale I wondered if they were setting her up for another story–it would be interesting if she pops up again in the future.

What did you think of Snow’s decision to pretend that Bigby was writing letters and sending presents to the children?

EF: My respect for Snow grew by leaps and bounds–especially when she presented all of her careful documentation to Bigby and demanded that he memorize it before meeting the children. I understand why Bigby felt he had to leave, but he put Snow in a tough position. That she handled it with grace, charity, and the best interests of her children–and Bigby–showed what a wonderful mother she is.

Do you think Snow and Bigby will live “happily ever after”?

EF: It was heartening that Colin showed up near the beginning to tell Snow that things were about to get better for her, but Snow and Bigby aren’t the prince and princess of a fairytale–they’re not supposed to be. I’m interested to see them adjusting to married life, living together, and raising their children. After all, Snow is used to being in charge–or as much as she can be with those hooligans!

Do you think the Adversary will retaliate against Fabletown for destroying his Magic Grove?

EF: I was really surprised by how easy it was for Bigby to drop down there, get to the Adversary, cause mass destruction, and get out. Is it because the Adversary has been unchallenged for so long, he’s gone soft? Or is it that he’s no match for modern technology? Something didn’t quite sit right there. If anything, I’m worried that the more he knows about modern technology, the more he’ll try to use it against Fabletown. And we know he has spies there!

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies DVD Gets 09/29/09 Release Date

Media Release -- The World’s Greatest Super Heroes become America’s most wanted criminals – and are hunted by friends and foes alike – in Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, the sixth entry in the popular DVD series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies. A co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation, the full-length animated film will be distributed by Warner Home Video on September 29, 2009. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies will be available as a Special Edition 2-disc version on DVD and Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def for $24.98 (SRP) and $29.99 (SRP), respectively, as well as single disc DVD for $19.98 (SRP) and On Demand.

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is based on the popular Jeph Loeb/Ed McGuinness comic series/graphic novel. Animation legend Bruce Timm (Superman Doomsday, Green Lantern) is executive producer. Michael Goguen (Justice League: The New Frontier) is supervising producer. Sam Liu (The Batman) is directing a script written by Stan Berkowitz (Justice League: The New Frontier).

In the film, United States President Lex Luthor uses the oncoming trajectory of a Kryptonite asteroid to frame Superman and declare a $1 billion bounty on the heads of the Man of Steel and his “partner in crime,” Batman. Heroes and villains alike launch a relentless pursuit of Superman and Batman, who must unite – and recruit help – to stave off the action-packed onslaught, stop the asteroid, and uncover Luthor’s devious plot to take command of far more than North America.

The movie reunites the lead voices of Superman, Batman and Lex Luthor from the landmark Superman: The Animated Series and Batman: The Animated Series. Tim Daly (Private Practice), Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League) and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) reprise their roles as Superman, Batman and Lex Luthor, respectively.
