National Center for Transgender Equality is sponsoring a lobby day on June 17 on Capitol Hill. This is the year when our lobbying efforts will push the US Senate to move on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Their Lobby Day will also outline the stake transgender people have in the fight for immigration reform.

Your voice has the potential to change the debate and move ENDA and immigration reform forward. Find out more at: http://www.transequality.org/ourmoment/schedule.html

Meet Matthew Ripa, one of the brains behind that which is Queer Theatre Festival! He, as well as Alan Balch and Rebecca Gingrich-Jones deal with directors, play wrights, media, tech, the play selection process, etc. When he is not planning Queer Theatre Festival, which he is one of the founders of, he is directing, working as a theater artist, and producing. He is the Producing Artistic Director of the Doorway Arts Emsemble, which is a theater company that focuses on producing works by local artists.

As the Center Arts Intern, I asked him a few questions so that I could get to know him a little better, his motivations for founding QTF, and why three-day event is worth checking out:

Devon: Is this your first time working with QTF? If not, what was your previous experience like with QTF?
Matthew: I am one of the founding producers of the festival. I thoroughly enjoyed the festival last year. We got to present a diverse collection of GLBTQ plays from local playwrights.

D: What do you think of the DC theater scene? More specifically, the queer theater scene?
M: We have a very vibrant and diverse theatre scene. One that values new plays and experimentation. As to Queer theatre, there are companies that are doing queer work, but it typically falls into the gay white male category. So there is not a huge diversity in the queer work presented in this city.

D: What was the process/criteria that went into selecting the plays for the festival?
M: We put out a call for submissions. We reviewed over 120 plays. We had a group of 5 readers who ranked the plays using a numerical system. The producers then used those rankings to curate the festival.

D: Why should people go to QTF? Will it be different than last year?
M: This year we are presenting fully produced 10 minute plays, last year was just readings. We are in a theatre as opposed to the DC Center office, that is a huge change. We have a great variety of plays that speak to the diversity of the GLBTQ Community.

Capturing Fire Slam Poet Spotlight: Judson Lewis

This year will be the third annual Capturing Fire, which is an international poetry and spoken word festival in which queer-identified writers come together for three days of competition, workshops, performances, and socializing in some of DC's best and most queer-friendly locations (i.e. The DC Center, Busboys & Poets, Town Danceboutique, etc.).

On Friday, June 14th at 11pm, Judson Lewis will be a returning competitor from last year. He will face another slammer, a slang term for someone who does slam poetry, in the preliminary round of Capturing Fire.

As a poet and performance artist, Lewis has entertained and amused a variety of audiences, such as universities, performance festivals, coffee shops, summer camps, and street corners. While his work is advocacy-oriented, he uses humor to evoke pieces that are innovative and bittersweet. His performances are both passionate and the words he strings together paint a visual to those that listen: "Life's tunnel is before you. You are the light at the end. Cue the tide. Cue the wind. Cue the sun. Cue time. In light, in love. Unravel it...Your back is a kaleidoscope of seasons."

In Lewis' piece, Chick-Fi-Gay: The Quest For The Forbidden Chicken, he talks about, in a verbosely funny and interesting way, about the controversy surrounding Chick-Fil-A's statement against gay marriage. This slam poet brings his gay identity into his performances and also engages the audience by managing to make them laugh about social issues related to his life.

If you want to see more, come to Capturing Fire June 14th-16th. You can take a look at the schedule by clicking here!

The DC HIV Prevention Planning Group (PPG) needs volunteers to help the DC Department of Health (DOH) address the HIV epidemic in the District.

The PPG engages stakeholders in the DC community to help create or update the DOH's HIV Prevention Plan, which is created by the HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Administration (HAHSTA). The PPG also regularly reviews HAHSTA's Plan and ensures that it addresses the needs of those most affected, infected and at highest risk for HIV transmission. We are a diverse group of people who represent the groups most affected by HIV.

Members serve renewable 2-year terms, and can vote on all PPG matters.

The HPPG is specifically seek representation from injection drug users, or organizations that serve that population, and Black men who have sex with men. We also seek providers of HIV/AIDS care services, substance abuse and mental health services.

The PPG meets approximately 8 times a year with additional committee conference calls, for a 6-8 hour monthly commitment.

Applications may be submitted until June 21, 2013.

Download the application from the HPPG website at http://doh.dc.gov/node/544422.

Hey there! I'm Devon, the new Arts intern at the DC Center. I just finished my third year at SUNY Purchase and study Anthropology with a double minor in Gender Studies and Art History. Among many things, I am most passionate about LGBTQ and women's rights advocacy, the arts, and travel--thus hoping to implement these into my future career path. I love working and collaborating with people in a creative way and believe that art, whichever medium, has the ability to be a both therapeutic process and a vessel for social change. I spend a lot of time thinking about knitting, gender studies, anthropology, bubble tea, sushi, or my next global excursion.

I am very excited to be involved in the main Center Arts events of the summer:

Behrend Builders and GLOE

Demolition Project for the DC Center

Sunday, May 26, 2013
10:00 am - 2:00 pm

FREE - RSVP Requested
You can RSPV by clicking here.
(Donations appreciated to help offset supply costs!)

Location: Reeves Center, 2000 14th St. NW (14th & U)

The DC Center for the LGBT Community finally got a permanent home, but they need our help to renovate! They were awarded a great ground-floor space, twice the size of their current home, but it's nowhere close to "move in ready." (Relocation News)

The first step is demolition! Volunteers will help Behrend Builders to clear out the old and make space for a brand new center to help serve our LGBT community. (All muscles - great and small - will be useful! No skills required!)

So grab your sledgehammer*, smash some walls and help this great community organization get their new space ready for business.

*Sledgehammer not actually required (if you have one, feel free to bring it). We'll handle the supplies; you just bring the effort. And appropriate footwear.

Where: NW, DC (metro and bus accessible)
What to wear: Clothes you can get messy and close toed shoes!
Bring: water and snacks, if you'd like (there won't be a formal lunch break)

Questions? Contact Laura at volunteer@washingtondcjcc.org or 202-777-3245.
