Brother Help Thyself invites you to join them for the 34th Annual Grants Reception and Awards Ceremony. The Reception takes place on Saturday January 28th, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Remingtons, 639 Pennsylvania Avenue SE (1/2 block west of the Eastern Market Metro Station).

Brother, Help Thyself is a community based organization that provides financial and other support to non-profit organizations serving the GLBTQ and HIV/AIDS community in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. metro area. During the past 30 years, they have raised over $2.1 million and distributed it to more than 130 groups in our community.

Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend 2012

Mid-Atlantic Leather weekend takes place January 13th to 16th, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

The weekend celebration includes two evening dances, a Leather Exhibit Hall, and many other elements. MAL has been preserved by the men of the Centaur Motorcycle Club, and is sustained by the Washington community and a multitude of Leather/Levi clubs and supporters from all over the world. Distinguished Local Panel of Judges Lined Up for Mr. & Ms. DC Leather Contest

Washington DC ~ Vern Stewart as head judge leads DCLeatherPRIDE's esteemed and distinguished local panel of judges for Mr. & Ms. DC Leather Contest which also includes Highwaymen TNT's President Ken Rogers, SigMa's Jim Plant, Potomac's Mama Schell, and dc boys of leather's president pupp tripp. Former Mr. DC Eagle John Harris and former Mr. Capital Pride Leather Jim Rinefierd will serve as tallymasters while boy ky of the dc boys of leather will serve as MC. Highwaymen TNT's Tim Woody serves as contest coordinator.

The Mr. & Ms. DC Leather contest takes place this Friday night June 3, 2011 at the DC Eagle. Judges, support staff, and contestants should arrive at the Eagle around 8pm for interviews and setup at which food and beverage will also be provided free of charge. The contest starts promptly at 10pm. Mr. DC Leather 2011 will be eligible to compete in either American Brotherhood Weekend (ABW) contest or Mid-Atlantic Leather (MAL) contest; while Ms. DC Leather 2011 will be eligible to compete in either American Brotherhood Weekend (ABW) contest or International Ms. Leather (IMsL) contest. Both winners will receive $250 each in cash and prizes, custom leathers (stole and back-patch), will appear Thursday June 9, 2011 and host the beer bar at the DC Eagle along with the rest of the DCLeatherPRIDE organizing committee, march in the Capital Pride parade with the leather contingency, and represent DCLeatherPRIDE throughout the year.

Organizers of DCLeatherPRIDE are also very pleased to announce Ted Clements, Justin Smith & CODE as winners of DCLeatherPRIDE's Community Service Awards. Ted is a long-time leatherman, supporter of the community, and long-time landmark at the DC Eagle where he is now primary owner. Justin, formerly of the dc boys of leather and also known as Mister J, is a former Mr. Maryland Leather, produces Justin's journal and has now written a children's book on how to address HIV/AIDS with children and family. CODE, launched several years by event producers and promoters David Merrill and Jacob Pring as a gear party with a strict dress code, has been a non-stop success and has been held at other special events and cities.

The Awards Ceremony takes place during the Mr. & Ms. DC Leather contest Friday night June 3, 2011 at the DC Eagle.

Last but not least, organizers are pleased to bring you a hot, late night event for after the contest: Dungeon Dance Party at District in Adams Morgan. There's no dress code, but feel free to come in and show off your kinky, fetish gear.

Volunteer at the DC Center Table for Leather Pride

Leather Pride will hold their street fair and festival Sunday June 5th, from 1:00pm - 8:00pm at the Parking lot next to the DC Eagle, 639 New York Ave NW.

We are in need of volunteers to staff our outreach table at the Leather Pride Education Day. Volunteers will hand out material, collect e-mail addresses, and talk to visitors about services and programs at the DC Center.

Leather Pride Planning Meeting

On Monday February 7, 2011 at 7.30pm, the Eagle (2nd floor) will host the kick-off planning meeting for DCLeatherPRIDE 2011 to be held Thurs June 2 - Sun June 5, 2011. Please Join us.

The planning committee is an all-volunteer committee of leather folk that coordinates and manages all aspects of DCLeatherPRIDE. For all leather clubs and leather folk, you can send as many representatives as you like as this is an open committee. For new folk or those interested in volunteering for a fun, event-packed warm-weather weekend, you are most welcome. We envision that the committee will meet for 1 - 2 hours every other week for the next 4 months (maybe weekly as the date approaches). Matt Bamford of HIV Working Group Testifies on Behalf of DC Center

Matt Bamford of the Center's HIV Working Group testified on behalf of the DC Center. In his testimony, Bamford mentioned that the Center is now the leading distributor of condoms in the city, despite receiving no grant money from the HIV/AIDS Administration. My name is Matt Bamford. I earn my living as a bartender in our GLBT community here in Washington, DC. I am also proud to represent the title of Mr. Capital Pride Leather 2009. As a volunteer, I am working with the National Equality March on Washington Execution and Planning Committee and I serve as a spokesman for The DC Center HIV Working Group DC Toolkit campaign, promoting safer sex within the GLBT community of Washington, DC. In the past, I have worked with many different HIV/AIDS organizations nationally such as Healing Hands, TACT, and I am a former gay youth counselor.

The reason why we are here before you is to address the current concerns of possible funding cuts to The DC Center & the DC Crystal Meth Working Group. Our HIV Working Group was formed following a town hall discussion on HIV/AIDS sponsored by the DC Crystal Meth Working Group, and would not exist without the support of The DC Crystal Meth Working Group and The DC Center. When the HIV Working Group was formed, it created the DC Toolkit campaign. This campaign, spearheaded by Dan O'Neill and Dr. Terry Gerace, was launched in May of 2009 to combat the rise in new infection rates of HIV/AIDS in the Washington, DC community. In the short time this group has been existence, dedicated community volunteers, have hand stuffed over 40,000 safer sex packets. These packets have been distributed to various nightclubs and public venues throughout Washington. These packets include 2 condoms, 1 packet of lube, and a card with our informative website address on it. This website, all the models, and all the information was once again done by volunteers of our local GLBT community.

Working in partnership with the HIV/AIDS administration, The DC Center HIV Working Group is now the number one distributor of condoms in the city. The group receives condoms and lube from the HIV/AIDS administration, but no financial support. The campaign has been funded largely by private donations. This work would not be possible without The DC Center. It is crucial that the GLBT residents of the District of Columbia have a place where they can come together, organize, and address the issues that impact our community. The DC Center is such a place, and as such, is worthy of a permanent home. I strongly urge this Council to fully support the DC Center and restore the funding of $150,000 for the DC Crystal Meth Working Group and $500,000 to go towards the purchase of a permanent home for The DC Center.

DCLeatherPRIDE Raises Over $1000 for Center

DCLeatherPRIDE raised $2,169 for equal beneficiaries the DC Center and Brother Help Thyself. The funds were raised during the educational classes and by the leather clubs Centaur MC, DC Bear Club, DC boys of leather, Defenders LLC, Highwaymen TNT, Onyx DC, Potomac MC, SigMa, and Spartan MC during All Colors Night.

Supporters of DCLeatherPRIDE included Black Rose, CAB, Centaur MC, Cobalt, DC Bear Club, DC boys of leather, DC Eagle, Defenders LLC, Green Lantern, HighwayMen TNT, Leather Rack, Master/slave Conference, ONYX, Potomac MC, Remingtons, SigMa, and Spartan MC. DCLeatherPRIDE was sponsored by the Crystal Meth Working Group.
