My Indian Scout is a marvelous motorcycle, but for longer tours it might get slightly uncomfortable and is very limited, when it comes to luggage. Therefore I decided to my increase my vehicle fleet by a big enduro for longer tours. Requirements: suitable for longer tours, good for offroad riding, not a BMW. Well, there’s not much left other than a Honda Africa Twin (2019 version with manual transmission, 12V power outlet and heated grips). The „Adventure Sports“ model would have been a bit more suitable for touring (bigger tank, higher seat), but that wasn’t available in black. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As a first step I removed all the decals (easy peasy with a hair dryer), to get the bike as „pure“ as possible. Within the last year, some other modifications took place. So if you are looking for some inspiration for an adventure enduro motorcycle, you are absolutely right here.

Next step: Crash bars. There are lots of different brands and even more models. Most of them are trash, as they are either made of aluminium of too thin and might deform or touch the bike during a crash (or even when the motorcycle falls over when standing). After reading endless posts in Africa Twin forums I decided to go for the Outback Motortek crash bars, as they are super sturdy (as can be seen in this test video, where a bike is pushed over on purpose ) and won’t change the look of the bike’s front in a negative way.

It’s also really practical as one can mount various things on it: fog lights, GoPro mounts and bags.

Part of the set is also a skid plate that protects the lower part of the motorcycle and might come in handy during any offroad trip.

The Africa Twin does come with regular hand guards, but these are made out of plastic, so they most probably would not survive a crash or even a fall (let alone protect your hand). So: Get rid of them and mount Barkbusters Handguards (via SW-Motech), that have an aluminium bar and are known to be really robust. Nice side effect: Your hands are much better protected against cold airflow.

The original exhaust is everything but subtle, when it comes to size and color. So I removed it and mounted a much smaller one made by REMUS, that fits the bikes color much better and has a much nice sound (of course it is street-legal in the EU).

To bring enough stuff for longer tours I went for the TRAX hard case system by SW-Motech. There are lots of different opinions about whether hard cases or soft bags are the better choice. As I always bring my camera equipment, I chose the hard cases to have it better protected. All cases are dust- and water proof and lockable. The top case is big enough to put your helmet inside.

Part of this system is also a luggage rack, that is perfect for mounting various stuff (of a top case, of course).

When writing about luggage I must not forget the Kriega bags, which I mounted on the crash bars. I use them to have my rain gear and my reflective vest always at hand and have the (in some circumstances) very wet rain gear separated from all the other luggage. They are super sturdy and even waterproof (which isn’t really a thing when using for carrying rain gear). Kriega also produces bigger (saddle) bags, that would have been my choice if I was looking for soft bags instead of hard cases. Another advantage: If your bike falls over of you slip, you have more space to get your leg out from underneath the motorcycle.

As someone who is a bit lazy and often forgets to take care of lubricating the chain (my Indian does have a belt fortunately), I decided to mount a chain oiler (CLS EVO), that does that for me. The reservoir and the pump is located underneath the seat, one filling lasts for about 10,000 kilometers. There’s also space for smaller stuff like a smartphone charger and the first aid kit (not in the picture) underneath the seat.

The oil line goes through the motorcycle to the back and over the swingarm to the chain, where it continously provides small amounts of oil. There is a control unit mounted at the handle bar that allows for adjusting the amount of oil (e.g. to increase it if you are riding in heavy rain). Right next to this control unit is the Tyre Boy, which measures the tyre pressure and the tyre temperature via two sensors that are mounted on the valve caps. This might be really useful when you go offroad riding and need to adjust the tyre pressure or in general to check if before every tour.

For mounting my smartphone I used the SP Connect mount and placed it on the center of the handle bar (I use the same system on the Indian as well as on my bicycle).

As I use my old iPhone as my sat nav (it’s good enough for that) I mounted another SP Connect mount (in combination with a RAM mount) right behind the wind shield (where many others mount their Garmins). This is also usable for mounting a GoPro.

To intensify the bike’s all-black-look and get better wind protection, I decided to change the original wind shield for the black Touratech wind shield. One of the few disadvantages of the 2019 Africa Twin is that it doesn’t allow to adjust the wind shield. Therefore I mounted the Batzen Windscreen Adjuster. This allows to vary the height and get better wind protection during highway rides (unfortunately you can’t adjust it while riding, but it’s better than nothing).

For a more aggressive offroad look and to have the main headlights better protected I chose the Alt Rider headlight protection. In Austria you are not allowed to have this mounted on the street (only offroad), but it can be removed without any tools withing seconds.

For better visibility I added the PIAA Fog Lights (the ECE approved version that is street-legal in the EU, of course).

These lights are attached to the main cable harness via a aftermarket adapter, that is connected right behind the front fairing (there is a socket for the original Honda fog lights where this can be plugged in). There is no need to pull any cables through the bike to the battery, also no relais are necessary. Switching the fog lights on and off is done via a original Honda fog light switch. Practical side effect: The control light for fog lights in the dashboard works (in contrast to many other aftermarket lights).

Right below that switch is a 12V power outlet to power a variety of things (smartphone charger, satnav, air compressor, etc.). This was (together with the heated grips) the only add-on I chose when ordering the bike. The 12V power outlet allows for a greater variety of devices, that’s why I preferred it to a USB power outlet.

For a better protection of the radiator I changed the plastic radiator guards to the aluminium ones made by Alt Rider.

The Hi Fender Kit made by Alt Rider is often discussed controversially (mostly because of the look). I really love the offroad look (in contrast to the standard fender), also the increased space between the wheel and the fender might be useful in really muddy situations (although I doubt that I might get in such situations…but you’ll never know).

As all motorcycles in the EU have to have orange side reflectors and (at least in Austria) you are not allowed to remove them, I mounted small ones (have to be ECE approved, like these ones) on the fork guards, as the original ones could not be re-used here.

The original toolkit falls under the category „aaww, so sweet“. For longer tours one should bring better and more tools. To safely carry them the SW-Motech toolbox is a perfect choice. It can be mounted on the inside of the pannier rack and does not disturb in any way. You might want to use bigger washers (than the ones provided) and not tighten the screws to much, as the plastic mounting parts might get damaged (especially if you carry a lot of tools in the box).

What is still missing? The tyres! The original Dunlop tyres were quite OK for my first tour to Corsica, but for future tours that also feature offroad parts there is a need for a tyre that is more capable for such parts. Many love the Conti TKC80, but I chose the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR and after riding it for around 5,000 kilometers I must say: perfect grip, I love it!

A really useful small tool is this throttle grip add-on made by Louis. As the 2019 version of the Africa Twin does not offer a cruise control (only available for the 2020 model), longer highway rides can become quite demanding for your wrist. With this little add-on you can simply more or less lay your hand on the throttle and keep a steady speed.

The original ones are really small and don’t offer the best grip – especially if you have a bigger shoe size (EU 45!). These ones are much better.

So, that was it for now. Malicious gossip has it that there wouldn’t be much more one could modify on this bike. Well, maybe the suspension could use a little upgrade (there are some lovely parts in the Öhlins store). But other than that? Hmmm…

Hm…

The post Africa Twin Adventure Bike first appeared on Christian Lendl | Blog.

What to do with an old (and not working) Power Mac G4, that has been down in the basement for 10 years?

Of course: A secret Gin stash! So your guests will still think „nerd!“ when they visit you and all your gin bottles are together in one place.

Step 1: Remove all the parts. Really, all the parts. Some are easy to remove, for others you might need some force (or even more force).

Much better now! All metal hooks have to be removed (or bent straight) so that they are not in the way.

For the interior panelling I chose a 1mm aluminium plate (from the DIY store). Looks good and is easy to cut with metal scissors (thicker plates are not that easy).

When cutting the plate, make sure you don’t close the scissors completely – that would make an ugly cutting edge).

The installation of the metal plates into the G4 housing is a bit of a PITA. You will ned some kind of reinforcement underneath the bottom plate (as the side is higher than the center). Flat washers and double sided tape will do perfectly. Please overlook the gap between the plates, that could have been done much nicer.

Everything looks better with LED lights, of course. I used a self-adhesive LED stripe. It is easy to attach to the ceiling and right side and can be shortened.

On the right side I used a metal grid (also from the DIY store) that I cut in shape. It acts as a translucent cover for the LED stripe. I could have done the same for the ceiling, but I decided not to.

Here we go:

Perfect for a reasonable gin selection, that looks good and can be hidden at any time.

The post Power Mac G4 Gin Stash first appeared on Christian Lendl | Blog.

Schritt 1: Alles raus, was keine Miete zahlt.

Due to an accident my parents‘ house had temporarily to be made as wheelchair-accessible as possible. Temporarily because the wheelchair was only neede for a couple of weeks. This once again showed that no education is wrong – especially, when it is about technical skills. Thanks, college for mechanical engineering!

First step: Adding support handles to the toilet so that sitting down and getting up is made easier (or better: made possible at all). A major specification was that everything is built in a way that it can be removed traceless afterwards. I could have mounted the support handles to the wall directly, but who wants to habe wholes in the wall and be reminded of the accident for the rest of all times?

After a five-minute-planning-phase (dear college teachers: sorry for the bad sketch) I chose a self-reinforcing frame made out of wooden bars (45x45mm) connected by metal brackets and SPAX screws.

As support handles I used the cheapest bathtub handles from the DIY store I could find (no need for fancy stuff here) and mounted them in an angle (as this provides the best support for getting up).

The side party that hold the handles are connected to each other on the top and the bottom so that the construction is unattached to the walls and cannot move.

As the holder for toilet paper was in the way, I had to re-mount it to the wooden frame. There’s got to be time for that

Effort for this construction: half a morning. Measure, get the materials, cut the wooden bars, mount everything, done.

Part 2: A ramp to geht into the winter garden. The doorstep is only 5cm high, but that is too high for an unskilled wheelchair user. Also, the door is around 30 years old and the plastic parts would not have survived multiple crossings without breaking. So I had to find a solution for this as well: A two-part foldable ramp (so that you can cross the doorstep from both sides) that you can fold in half, when you don’t need it and want to close the door. I chose multi-layer wooden boards, as the are really stable (16mm thickness – next time I would chose 20mm).

For a height difference of 5cm a ramp length of 50cm should be OK (if the ramp is shorter, it would be more difficult to get the wheelchair across). As cross connectors I used the same 45x45mm wooden bars that I already used for the toilet.

The frame is quite simple (two side party, a cross connectore and a board ontop). To minimize the deflection of the board I mounted a little piece of waste wood in the center of the board.

Both parts are identical and were connected with hinges so that the ramp can be folded.

Self-test was successful:

Part 3 – My masterpiece: a ramp into the garden. Here the difference in height was bigger (22cm) and I had to deal with a fixed step that couldn’t be removed. I used the same materials: 45x45mm wooden bars and 15mm wooden boards.

I chose a length of 150cm to cover the height difference of 22cm. A shorter ramp would have made it more difficult for the wheelchair user to get up. A longer ramp would have made it easier, but then I would have had difficulties getting the wooden board into my car. So: 150cm. Also, it proved to be the perfect length to cover the step (that had to be cut out of the side parts).

For the substructure I used severall crossbars to maximise the stability. The ramp has to deal with the weight of the wheelchair user, the wheelchair and maybe also a person pushing the wheelchair (and some safety buffer, of course) – all in all around 200kgs.

The crossbars were complemented by longitudinal studs, so that the cover plate does not sag anywhere.

Also the upper part (where the step is) has crossbars and longitudinal studs.

The two small studs in the lower area would not have been necessary. But as I already cut them, why not use them?

All studs and bars are connected via metal brackets.

To improve the slip resistance I added self-adhesive grip tape.

Last but not least I mounted a small bar on the side of the ramp to keep the wheelchair wheels from sliding of the ramp.

That’s how the ramp and the step look like:

Et voilá:

The only downside is that you can’t close the door as long the ramp is there (I have to admit: I only noticed that after I built it). But as it isn’t too heavy, it can be removed by one person easily.

Hard Facts

Costs for materials for all three parts (wood, screws, brackets, etc.): ca. 200€

Necessary tools: jigsaw, electric drill, ruler, pencil.

Time needed: half a day.

Hard Facts

Materialkosten für alle drei Rampen (Holz, Schrauben, Winkel, etc.): ca. 200€

Notwendiges Werkzeug: Stichsäge, Akkuschrauber, Lineal, Bleistift.

Aufwand: ein halber Tag.

They say that a motorcycle is never finished, but „Indy“ (the name of this beauty) nearly is (at least for now). As people keep asking me which modifications i did, I’ll list all mods in this posting. Maybe it inspires another rider to work on his or her Scout.

Before I start I want to thank Harald from Indian Vienna for his great support and perfect customer service! And maybe it is worth mentioning that this is a 2016 Indian Scout Sixty – just in case someone with a newer Scout is wondering why some parts may not fit.

To get a more sporty look I mounted the Indian 1901 Mini Windshield. I got it painted black before, as I don’t really liked the „1901“- lettering). The windshield-performance (in terms of keeping the wind off me) is not really big, but I mounted it for style reasons anyways.

Together with the wind shield the Indian Beach Bar Handlebar makes riding much more comfortable (it’s lower and wider than the original handlebar).

As the original footpegs were quite worn out (due to contact with the tarmac in corners), I mounted the Indian Scout Bobber Footpegs (with those little screws that you can change…however they are called) and added Indian Passenger Footpegs for passengers.

For tours I also use the black Indian Leather Saddlebags (not during this photo shoot), you can see them on my photoblog posts for the tours in Vorarlberg and Scotland). To improve the handling I changed the front shocks and installed the Cartridge Tracker by K-Tech (available via Zupin) – they make a huge difference!

Also the rear shocks were changed – I mounted the Bullit shocks by K-Tech (also available via Zupin). They get custom-fitted to your weight and work like a charm.

The original sound is…well…let’s say „not optimal“. Therefore I changed the exhaust and mounted a VPerformance exhaust. The sound is marvellous and it is street-legal in the EU. The loudness can be set by changing the DB-killer (there are 2 different ones available). I also like the look, as the exhaust is much smaller than the original one and also gives more space to the Metzeler white wall tyres.

For the comfort I mounted the Brave Fastback Saddle by Corbin.

This seat is so comfortable and also has space for a passenger – to be honest: only for short rides. The mounts for the saddlebags allow for a passenger sissy bar to be mounted. But as it is quite ugly, I only mount it when a passenger is on board.

As a perfect addition to the wind shield I mounted the Küryakyn Signature Series Sprint Chin Spoiler, which gives the bike a much more sporty look. It has to be painted before you can mount it.

I didn’t really like the massive original blinkers, so I changed them and used the Bullet 1000 LED-Blinker by Kellermann (you can get them also at Louis), fortunately my Scout didn’t need any changes in the electrical system (you can find a detailed how-to manual in German on Mo’s Blog). The Highsider LED Headlight is a perfect addition – thanks to the guys from IWAN-Bikes in Munich for the tip!

The logo on the tank was removed, instead I got a hand-painted lettering (made by the master himself, August Mischinger).

The Belt-Cover was painted in black (as the wind shield and the spoiler…great work by Weihrauch Carcare – great customer service!) and outfitted with our NerdCircusMotorcycleClub-logo (enamelled steel plate made by RIESS Email).

The exhaust is taped and thanks to some Nike sneakers and a rain trouser it has two beautiful stains from plastic (proof that it really gets hot!). ¯_(ツ)_/¯

As I don’t like to have my smartphone in my pocket when I ride, I mounted the SP-Connect Mount (together with a RAM Ballmount) on the handlebar. It works perfectly and keeps the smartphone right behind the small wind shield.

Last, but not least: The frame of the rear light was also painted black.

That’s it for now – let’s see what additional mods I’ll add in the future.

UPDATE 2020: The Corbin seat is not approved for two persons in Austria, as it does not have a strap. So I changed it to the Indian Sport Seat, that has one.

No one will ever use it, as the passenger sits directly on top of the strap – but that doesn’t interest the law, right?! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The construction and comfort is quite similar to the Corbin seat and the chrome Indian logo is also a very nice detail.

To better store the first aid kite and not having to put it underneath the wind screen, I installed a Ends Cuoio swing arm bag (Paco). There is also space for some tools and the red seams match the red lines of the custom tank logo perfectly.

All modifications have been added to the vehicle registration book. The qualified experts from IBBZ Ingenieure have been extremely helpful there, as they documented all modifications in a technical report, which made it much easier to get everything approved by the vehicle inspection authority.
The post Indian Scout Sixty Custom Motorcycle first appeared on Christian Lendl | Blog.

Last, but not least: Die Umrahmung des Rücklichtes ist ebenfalls schwarz lackiert.

The post Indian Scout Sixty Custom first appeared on Christian Lendl | Blog.

Two years ago Melinda interviewed me for the series „A Freelancer’s Life“ on her blog where she interviewed several freelancers about their work life. As the original blog post is not online anymore, I copied it to this blog. Here you go:

Here’s why I started #AFreelancersLife: To highlight different freelancers from all sorts of backgrounds and pick their brains about what they do and how they do it. If you would like to be featured just drop me a line and let me know! Today’s post features Christian, a multimedia engineer who once had the pleasure to listen to me stumble over my lines for a short video for approx. 2 hours (I’m sure it was just as magical for him as it was for me). Asking him to give me a little more insight into his daily life and business was purely for selfish reasons as I’m incredibly fascinated by people who produce photography and videos for a living. Find out more in his interview here:

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A FREELANCER AND WHAT EXACTLY IS IT THAT YOU DO?

I consider myself a „multimedia engineer“. Most of my projects involve photography and filmmaking, but I do other stuff as well from time to time – from printed conference newspapers to small web projects. Basically, I am a one-man production company. I don’t have any employees, but I work a lot with other freelancers whom I hire for certain projects. I started as a freelancer in 2007 (part-time besides my regular job) and switched to being a full-time freelancer in 2011.

HOW DOES YOUR TYPICAL WORK DAY LOOK LIKE, IF THERE IS ONE AT ALL?

Like most of the freelancers in the media business, I don’t have a typical day. In some weeks I am on (photo or film) shoots for a couple of days, in other weeks I am behind my desk doing all the editing or the “boring stuff” (writing offers/invoices, doing the taxes, … ).

WHAT EXACTLY DOES YOUR FREELANCING WORK ENTAIL?

Pre-project work mostly consists of writing offers, concepts and coordinating project details with the client. Photo projects are mostly (in simplified terms) about going somewhere, taking pictures and then editing them – I mostly do documentation/reportage and business portraits for B2B clients; I don’t do beauty, commercial ads or weddings. I am not a big fan of retouching (actually I hate it) and fortunately I don’t have to do it very often. For portraits, I almost always work with make-up artists – if they are good, not much ( any) retouching is needed.

Filmmaking projects are a bit more complex. Much more coordination is needed before I can press the REC button on my camera: finding out exactly what the client wants, what the intended purpose of the video is, writing a script, etc. As with photography, I mostly do B2B projects (no Hollywood-style action movies). Filming itself can also vary from short interviews where I work alone to bigger productions where I work with various other freelancers. I also do the post-production (editing, audio production, graphics, …) for most of my projects.

And then there’s the usual office stuff: invoices, taxes, …

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT SO FAR AS A FREELANCER?

I went to the USA with Richard and Bernhard to film “Projekt Silva”, a documentary about a treasure hunt. Nearly two weeks of filming in the Midwestern USA was definitely one of the most exciting projects I have worked on! Another highlight was a project for a sailing company, for which we got to spend two weeks in the Caribbean on a catamaran producing an image video.

HOW DOES YOUR PREVIOUS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE TIE IN WITH YOUR CURRENT FREELANCER WORK?

Originally I went to a technical college for mechanical engineering and studied computer science at the University of Technology in Vienna. So that doesn’t really have much to do with photography and filmmaking (except some courses at the Vienna UT where we did some basic video production)… Photography (and later, filmmaking also) started as a hobby and then became a job over the years.

DO YOU SOMETIMES HAVE MOTIVATIONAL LOWS, AND IF SO, WHAT DO YOU DO TO GET OUT OF YOUR LOW?

Yes, of course – like everyone else, I guess. For short-term lows, coffee and chocolate help – or having a short break and going for a spin on my bike. Playing a couple of songs on the drums (which are placed right next to my desk, fortunately) also helps to relieve stress.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A FREELANCER? WHAT DO YOU HATE?

The thing I love most is the freedom of time management. Half a day off to go biking? Great, no problem! I can choose my own office hours (most of the time). Sure, if my clients book me for a certain time and date, I have to be there. And yes, there are weeks where I don’t get any free time at all. But that’s not the usual situation.

What I hate? That the Austrian Government doesn’t give a sh*t about self-employed people. The social insurance system is a mess and the forced membership in the Austrian Chamber of Commerce is a pain in the a** – just to name two examples.

HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR DAY: WHEN ARE YOU TAKING BREAKS, WHEN ARE YOU WORKING, WHEN ARE DOING WHICH TASKS IN PARTICULAR?

As every day is different (photographing on location vs. editing videos at my desk), I don’t have a usual structure. When I’m behind my desk I try to answer client emails and write offers in the morning. I take breaks every now and then, especially when the computer is doing some CPU-intensive work (like rendering video files). I am really productive in the evening (maybe until 1 am), so I often have a longer break (bike ride) in the afternoon and continue working until midnight.

WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE 3 WEBSITES/APPS YOU’RE USING ON A REGULAR BASIS REGARDING YOUR FREELANCE WORK?

Things (iOS and Mac) – my favourite to-do app (both on the Mac and the iPhone)

Weather Pro (iOS) – IMHO the best weather app for iOS. It’s always good to know what the weather is going to be if you have an outdoor photo shoot.

Excel (Mac) – Yes, I am a nerd and I love playing around with formulas in Excel.

TELL US ABOUT AN EXCITING PROJECT YOU HAVE WORKED ON WHICH MADE YOU PROUD.

Apart from the above-mentioned “Projekt Silva”, there is a tiny little project I did for myself: “But first, coffee”. Originally, it was just supposed to be a test shoot for my (then) new camera (just my camera and me in my kitchen; I’m also the one making the coffee), but after putting it online I got so much great feedback from various professional baristas and coffee lovers.

I love food. And I love good restaurants – especially, when I’m on holiday.

We were in Crete (Greece) recently and visited a lot of restaurants – some excellent, some OK and some…let’s say “in need of improvement”. A lot of restaurants have pictures of their dishes displayed in front of the restaurant. Don’t go there. I made the experience that only the poorer restaurants have those pictures on display. The good ones don’t (or have just the menu on a stand…without pictures!).

The sign above is perfect for the Greek lifestyle…and also the service in most restaurants. You gotta have time. Especially after you have finished eating. Clearing the table right after the last one has finished their dish (like in Austria)? No way. Waiters go by regularly, even look at you and your correctly arranged cutlery (or is there a different way of saying “I am finished” in Greece?), but do nothing. This happened to us in nearly every tavern and restaurant.

When it comes to paying the bill, the waiters will bring you the bill and then leave again to come back later to collect the money and then bring you the change (hardly a waiter has money with him like in Austria). The funny thing is that most of them won’t remember the total sum when they come back to collect your money. It happened to us quite often that they asked “What was the total sum again?” or “Can I see the bill again?”. So don’t put the bill in your pocked too fast. Regarding the tip (5-10% is appropriate): Don’t give it to the waiter, just leave it on the table.

If you are a smartphone junkie like I am, you need WiFi. Fortunately, more and more restaurants have free WiFi (some even have signs in front of the entrance…but that shouldn’t be the only reason to go there. As mentioned before, beware of those bad pictures of dishes!). Mostly the WiFis require a password. The waiter will tell you the password or give you a small piece of paper with the password written on it. If you are too shy to ask, you can try one of the following passwords (these combinations were used regularly in restaurants that we visited):

restaurant name

restaurant name + year (or the year before)

restaurant name + “internet”

If you want to get to know the not-so-touristic side of Crete, get a car and drive to the South of the island. Most of the tourism is happening at the North side, the South is more “untouched”. Of course you can also find great restaurants/ taverns there. One is located in Sellia (Σελλιά) and offers not only a great view (see below), but also traditional Greek dishes. It’s called Eniá and has only a small menu card, but additionally a daily varying menu board (where you find the best dishes!). As we were sitting there, the local fishmonger brought some fresh fish and some minutes later, the landlord went up to the menu board and added some fish dishes.

This is what the tavern looks like from the street. Not very fancy and might be overlooked – but the food and the view are both purely awesome! No WiFi, but the view is more interesting than any social media service anyway.

The best restaurants we visited were located in Rethymno (Ρέθυμνο) on the North side of Crete:

Alana (TripAdvisor-Link)
Lovely restaurant in the old town of Rethymno near the harbour. Excellent food (best Tzatziki I ever had!) and great service. The whole restaurant is outside under a giant tree. In fact, they have so many waiters that it seems a bit “crowded” sometimes. Not cheap (for a restaurant in Crete), but compared to Vienna more than OK. Better reserve a table, if you want to go there on a weekend. It won the TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence” several times (including 2013).

Castelvecchio (TripAdvisor-Link)
Located also in the old town of Rethymno (in fact, just around the corner of Alana). Not that much tables (which makes it much more pleasant to me), but a perfect location for a romantic candlelight dinner (they don’t have much more lighting than candles anyway). Also: great food and great service. If you don’t know what to eat, talk to the waiter. He’s a lovely and funny guy and will find the perfect dish for you. The price level is the same as for Alana. Also a TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence” winner in 2013.

The old harbour of Chania is also a very nice place to visit – and to have lunch or coffee! The harbour is full of restaurants – most of them show their pictures of their dishes. In between there was one single restaurant that didn’t have any pictures…“Amphora”….that’s were we had lunch. It was excellent! We later discovered that it also won some TripAdvisor excellence awards. That’s the view from the tables in the front:

Our hotel was in Platanias (right next to Rythymno). As we learned, it is the nightlife & disco area. Not really our taste (we were relocated from another hotel unfortunately). It is also “optimized” for guests from Russia – a lot of stores have Russian names, there are a lot of stores for furs (yes, in Crete!) and jewelry and the restaurants have their menu cards in Russian (but mostly also in English and German). So if you are from Russia, this might be your thing. Everyone else: maybe not.

As Crete is the biggest producer of olives in Greece (according to the guidebook), go eat some olives and buy olive oil (mostly better than the oh-so-famous Italian olive oil!). There is not much, that is not made out of olives. As I learned, those skin care products made with olive oil are also great. There are a lot of small stands in villages or on the roadside (especially on the mountainous regions in the South), which sell olive oil and honey. We found it much more pleasant to buy stuff there than in big stores in the main cities or at the airport (where it is also much more expensive). And maybe have a chat with the locals – most of them speak English quite good (even in the not-so-touristic South). And even if not – using gestures and hand signs to communicate is always fun, isn’t it?
