Not that I don’t adore my family, but sometimes it is just nice to get away.

I’m here attending a small, intimate travel blogger conference organized by my friend, Kim Orlando, along with Eileen Ogintz and Kyle McCarthy of Family Travel Forum. With sponsors such as Disney World, Visit Orlando, Norwegian Cruise Line and Omni Hotels & Resorts, you just know it’s going to be fabulous.

Of course, you know me, I was most excited about hanging with some of my favorite bloggers and experiencing another posh hotel. I have a bit of an obsession with hotels. I know some people hate them, but I can’t explain the feeling of euphoria I get walking into a luxurious hotel suite that is mine, all mine for a day or two.

The Omni Berkshire Place was no disappointment. It is exactly the kind of hotel I like to visit. It’s been recently renovated so it’s the perfect mix of old charm and new conveniences, and it’s classy without being stuffy.

The decor is simple but lovely and perfectly inviting, and the staff is friendly and welcoming and not at all uptight.

This morning after breakfast, I wandered around the hotel taking pictures. It was hard to really capture the beauty of this old building, but I tried. This gorgeous arrangement was the centerpiece of the lobby.

The Omni also tries to cater to families. There was a little kid sack in my room (my kids were invited, but I chose to come alone) which I appreciated. I especially appreciated that it did not include food. It’s a nice touch when a hotel hands out hot cookies upon arrival, but notsomuch when your kids have food allergies that prevent them from partaking.

Some Omni hotels even have kid suites. How cool is that??! That would totally sway me to stay at an Omni if I was traveling with my whole family.

<img

I mentioned upon arrival that I eat gluten-free, and they didn’t even ask about toast; they simply served my omelette with a side of potatoes (that were delish, I might add — you know how sometimes breakfast potatoes can be bland? These weren’t.)
<p

When we return to New York with our family, I will definitely consider revisiting the Omni Berkshire Place. It’s the perfect marriage of form and function for families who like to travel in style.

{Gluten Free} Game Day Line Up

Food

Udi's Gluten Free Living Community
<guid

But I do have a couple of pictures.

Yesterday was unseasonably warm in Philly, and it’s expected to be much the same today. The temps reached 60 according to the thermometer in my car!!!

I have one question. WHERE WAS THIS WEATHER WHEN I WAS HAVING MY WORKSHOP??? Oh well. Clearly it was not meant to be.

I used the opportunity to shuck the boots and galavant around town without my coat. (I also went on my first run since my infirmities.) It. was. glorious.

Here’s what I wore running errands. Nothing too exciting, but I do love this embellished tee (that seems to be shrinking in the dryer. It’s getting too short. Drat. Hate it when that happens.)

And on Monday, my first day off the couch for three days, I wore my cream Athleta sweater, but instead of pairing it with jeans, I tried it with these tan cords.

I like the color combo, because it allows the blue tank to pop more, but I had no idea what shoes to wear with it. I went with my brown suede boots, but they really aren’t working for me. The sweater has an athletic vibe going on, and the boots . . . well, don’t. But I didn’t want to wear sneakers. Thoughts??
<p

Doesn’t it look like I’m looking at myself?

I think I’m saying, Dang girl. You look skinny. You must have had the stomach flu last week.

Heehee. I crack myself up sometimes.

(I lost 8 pounds last week. Which might sound glorious, but trust me, I wouldn’t advise it — not by this method, anyway. And before you yell at me, I’ve already gained 3 back. My muffin top will be alive and well in short order, I’m sure.)

Oh yeah, here’s what I’m wearing:

Nolan Painting to paint my living room.

First, let me explain. This is only the second time in our married lives we have hired out a paint job. My husband is a DIY guy at heart. He actually runs a podcast with his best friend, showing other DIYers how to DIY stuff. Check out their Handyguys Podcast sometime. They’re rocking and rolling over there!

He is actually quite a competent painter, and when we bought our first home back in 2000, he taught me to paint. I loved it, believe it or not! We painted that entire house at least three times over in the five years we lived there. No lie. We can paint. (And also? We are indecisive. HA!)

But three kids later and all the activities that go along with school and church and family life (not to mention our myriad of jobs) and time is our enemy.

Plus, painting is sorta like cooking. I enjoy the process, but clean up is a beast. We have this really bad habit of never thoroughly finishing a project. There are unfinished reminders of our home improvement projects throughout our entire house.

So when Nolan Painting, one of my blog’s current sponsors, offered to gift us with their Painter For A Day service, we joyfully accepted.

The only other time I have had a professional painter work on my home is when we moved into this house. I had a new baby and a new house, and my mom gifted us with a professional painter to do our foyer (which is one of those 2-story cathedral types that I didn’t want my husband messing with) and the connecting hallways and stairwell. While I enjoyed having it done for me, it was tiresome having this guy in our house for days on end, not knowing when he would arrive, when he would leave, and when he would be done. And in the end, his work was so shoddy that I had to go back around and touch up the woodwork. It was not a pleasant experience, and we’ve done our own painting ever since. (I chose the guy, not my mom, just for the record. And I am still VERY appreciative!!! That job would have never gotten done, left up to us.)

But this experience with Nolan Painting couldn’t have been more opposite. These guys were professional and personable. They called and let us know exactly when they would come. (We actually set a specific day with their office, but they still called the day before and confirmed the time of their arrival and everything.)

They arrived promptly at 7:30 AM, confirmed the job situation, and started laying out drop clothes and everything.

I went upstairs with my laptop, and when I came back down for lunch, the first coat of paint was on the walls. They were done by 3:30. They picked up everything. I have no idea where they even washed their brushes and rollers — they didn’t mess up my house doing it — and when they were done, everything was in pristine condition. They even moved the furniture back in place.

And my living room? Painted from head to toe in a gorgeous shade of chocolate brown, no outlet covers left on the dining room table, no last minute spackling jobs left for another day, no dabs of brown paint on white ceiling . . . everything was perfectly and completely and 100% COMPLETE.

I am now sold on professional painters. At least, I am sold on THESE professional painters. (Sorry, hon. It’s not you. It’s our busy life!!)
<div

I am not so thrilled with the leaves now that the room is all put back together. I think I need something bolder. Take a look at the window I’m working with. I’m thinking of floor-length panels, but I’m not sure about color and pattern.

<img

I don’t have a clue where to begin. I’m wide open to suggestions!

Disclosure: Nolan Painting is advertising on my blog for three months. href="http://www.musingsofahousewife.com/2010/11/fashion-friday-jeans.html" target="_blank">I’ve addressed it before, but I thought it might be time to revisit the topic.

Finding the perfect jeans is a challenge for sure, but I think you are up for it! It requires a lot of patience and a lot of trying on. Yeah, I know. No one wants to spend a day trying stuff on, but there is no other way to find the perfect pair of jeans.

Like most issues of style, it all comes down to fit and proportion. And of course, we are all proportioned differently so everyone has to figure out what works for them.

You can find good fitting jeans at all price points, but I am slightly addicted to designer denim. It just generally fits better than the rest. But never fear!! You don’t have to shell out your month’s grocery budget on them either. With off-price shopping like TJMaxx and Nordstrom Rack and daily deal sites like Gilt, there is plenty of designer denim to be had at reasonable prices. And don’t rule out thrift stores. If you find a good thrift store in a wealthy area, you can find designer denim at rock bottom prices.

And you can definitely find jeans that fit well at Target or Old Navy or the Gap, but frankly, those prices are getting awfully full of themselves these days. I’d rather shop for designer at off-price stores; I think it’s a much better deal. I’ve done well for myself at Nordstrom Rack.

There are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind when shopping for (and trying on) jeans.

Size

It’s tough, I won’t lie. There are no easy numbers to go by like men’s pants.

Some brands work better for some people than others. If you’re a curvy girl, your challenge is to find a style where the waist isn’t gaping. If you have more of a straight figure, try to find a pair that doesn’t cut in at the waist and give you the dreaded muffin top.

I always buy my jeans on the smaller side. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way, and I’ve learned to listen to the salesgirls at Nordstrom. They usually know what they are talking about. They do stretch out as you wear them, and if you don’t put them in the dryer (I said it already but it stands to be repeated: NEVER PUT YOUR JEANS IN THE DRYER) they will fit perfectly when you buy them just a bit too snug.

This is simply a matter of trial and error. If you’re at a department or specialty store, the sales associate should be able to give you some guidance. Even if you plan to shop for your jeans at a discount, it’s a good idea to go to a full service store to try them on and determine which brand and styles work best for you.

Rise

Pay attention to the rise. If you are short-waisted, you may want a bit of a lower rise rise to balance that out. If you are long waisted, a higher rise will do more to elongate your legs and make you look well proportioned. And of course you want to avoid the dreaded muffin top at all costs. It is hard to find a pair of jeans that is low enough to be flattering and high enough hide what ought to be kept hidden. Just say no to crack, I always say.

An appropriate rise also depends on your age. The younger you are, the easier it is to get away with a low rise pant. As we get older, we have to be more careful about that. A mid-rise is always safe. The extreme high-rise is making its way back these days, but that’s more of a daring look. You really do have to have enough height to pull it off.

Length

It’s very important to consider the length of your jeans. YOU MAY NEED TO HAVE YOUR JEANS HEMMED. Don’t rule out that possibility. There is nothing worse than jeans that are the wrong length. If they are too long, you look sloppy. If they are too short, you look frumpy. Sorry, them’s the facts. Very few of us are the exact right height for jeans off the rack. Of course, they vary by style and brand.

When having your jeans hemmed, make sure to ask for jean hem. They should retain the original hem. If they don’t know what you mean, run far, far away and find another tailor. It’s safest to have them hemmed at a department store. It costs about $20.

Your jeans should just barely skim the floor — no more than a half-inch off the ground (and that’s after they’ve been washed — leave 1/2 – 3/4 inch for shrinkage and NEVER put your jeans in the dryer.) Take a look at your view from behind, and make sure they are not dragging, but that they are JUST touching the floor (because they will shrink 1/2 -inch when you wash them).

The exception to this rule is the skinny jean. It should end right below the ankle bone. And they can be scrunched if they’re a bit too long, so they are more forgiving when it comes to length.

Did you know that I’m a mind reader? Right now you’re thinking that you have high heels and you have flats and how are you supposed to know what length your jeans are supposed to be???

I know. You will have to have more than one pair of the perfect jeans. Sorry. It’s just the way it is.

I have some jeans hemmed for flats and some hemmed to wear with heels. Of course the one exception is when you tuck your jeans into your boots. Then the length doesn’t matter. WOO! (But other there are other issues with those jeans . . . stay tuned for a future post.)

Pocket Placement (and size and style)

Please pay attention to the pockets, ladies. If they are too high, they scream MOM JEAN! If they are too low, well, you might look droopy. If they are too wide apart or too close together, they can add unwanted pounds. Some of this depends on your shape, so try on a bunch and determine which works best. Ask a saleslady for assistance, or bring along an honest friend.

You also want to pay attention to the size of the pocket. If you have a smaller derriere, you probably want to go for smaller pockets. If you have a little more back there, then go a bit larger. If you try on a lot of jeans, you will start to notice smaller details like this and which ones look best on you.

Beware of the flap pocket. It can be a hard look to pull off. I like the flap pocket on me because I feel it helps give me a bit more volume back there (I need it!) but if you have a rounder tushy, you may want to steer clear of the flap pockets, or choose wisely.

The pocket placement on these is about right. The length is too short. Never judge appropriate pant length from the stores online. Models are almost always way too tall for the jeans you buy in stores, and so the photos online are rarely the right length.

Color

A dark wash is dressier. A lighter wash is more casual. White jeans are a nice crisp look for summer, and you can even pull them off for winter if you wear them with the right pieces. Black jeans are nice to have for an evening look, and colored jeans are trendy right now. If you are going to have only one or two pair of jeans, go for one dressier dark wash and one medium wash for everyday wear.

Style

If you’re trying to decide whether to buy skinny jeans, straight-leg, bootcut, wide leg or something in between, consider your lifestyle and where you are planning to wear them. Your body shape may come into play here as well, but I do believe with the proper top and accessories, almost any woman can wear almost any style of jean.

You may be more comfortable in a bootcut because you feel it balances out your wide hips.

Or you may feel more comfortable in skinnies because you plan to tuck them into boots every day.

A wide leg jean is dressier and may be appropriate for church or the workplace.

If you’re afraid of trying skinnies, give a nice slender straight-leg jean a try. Sometimes they read as skinnies on certain people.

Bootcut and wide leg jeans look best with a heel. If you’re a flats sorta girl, you probably want to stick with a straight leg or skinnies. Of course these rules vary based on your height. If you are tall and leggy, you can probably get away with bootcut jeans and flats.

Tell me. What are your favorite jeans?? I seem to have one of THOSE afternoons about once a month. Ahem.

Everything went wrong from one of the kids tracking mud into my freshly cleaned house to someone else making me late for an appointment to someone else being defiant and disagreeable. But instead of handling it all with grace and beauty, I went ballistic. It was ugly, people. Pure ugly.

A while later, we were in the car coming home from said lesson. It was quiet in the car except for an occasional sniffle from the backseat, and I was suddenly overwhelmed with a heavy guilt weighing on my soul. That balloon of righteous indignation that had been fueling my anger was slowly deflating, leaving me feeling like a cold, heartless shrew.

I had done the worst thing a mother could do. I had stomped on my child’s tender feelings and injured her self esteem. I know better than to lose my temper. I know that nothing fruitful comes from throwing a fit.

Struck with remorse and self-loathing, I silently prayed for forgiveness and then asked the same of my child. I explained that I do not want to be THAT mom, and that while I may have had a right to be angry, I had sinned in my anger by the way I had spoken to her. I said I was sorry and asked for forgiveness.

And there was silence.

No sound came from the backseat, except perhaps another sniffle.

I knew instinctively that my child was not ready to forgive. She was too hurt, and her heart was still hard.

Here is where I had a choice.

I could “make” her forgive me, or at least, I could make her SAY that I was forgiven, and assume the heart would eventually follow the words. Or I could let it go and assume that she would eventually get over her injured pride. In which case, she may or may not end up saying that she forgave me, but I could rest assured that there would unfortunately be plenty more opportunities for her to learn this bitter life lesson.

I chose the latter. I decided to let it go.

As the evening progressed, a tenuous sense of normality returned to our home, but I operated under a heightened sense of my own sinfulness and shortcomings as a mother. Later I tenderly tucked each of my little charges into their beds, and retired to my own, wearily thankful that I could start over fresh in the morning.

A few days went by, and nothing out of the ordinary occurred until one afternoon when I overheard a scuffle upstairs. It was the unmistakeable sound of my two daughters locked in mortal combat, so I called them down. I didn’t like the way the one was speaking to the other, and I calmly told her so.

They went back up, and in a minute one daughter came back. She looked distraught and explained that she had asked forgiveness for speaking so harshly, and her sister had just turned away and given her the cold shoulder.

Aha! Opportunity knocks!

I hugged her close and said softly, “Well, you know. You WERE speaking very harshly to her just a couple minutes ago. She is only treating you the way you were treating her.”

“But I asked for forgiveness!” she exclaimed indignantly.

And there was my chance.

Snuggling her even closer I said, “I remember a day not too long ago when I asked YOU for forgiveness and you never responded. I knew you weren’t ready yet, so I didn’t push it. Give her some time.”

As I spoke, I saw the dawn of recognition pass across her features as she crumpled inside.

She buried her face in my neck as she said with total sincerity and remorse, “I’m sorry, Mommy. I DO forgive you.”

*cue tears*

With that, I knew that following my instincts that afternoon in the car had been the right decision.

See, forgiveness is a sticky widget. You cannot force someone to forgive you. If you are a parent, you can require the words be spoken, but that doesn’t mean the heart necessarily follows.

I like the way the Free Online Dictionary puts it:

Forgiveness means that you are willing to grant pardon without harboring resentment.

That is some seriously hard stuff, if you think about it.

Asking forgiveness of another person goes beyond a simple expression of remorse or saying “I’m sorry”.

When you say, “I’m sorry,” people tend to reply, “It’s okay” because they don’t know what else to say.

But it is often NOT okay.

It is NOT okay that I yelled at my child and hurt her feelings, but the act IS forgivable.

Forgiveness requires the relationship to be restored, and that can only happen when both parties are ready. While it’s not always easy, it’s totally worth waiting for.

Mom Fashion | What I Wore This Week 01.25.12

Uncategorized

What I Wore Wednesday
<guid

From the snowstorm that interrupted (but did not cancel!) my <a

But here’s what I’ve got!

SATURDAY:

It hasn’t snowed here in Philly since my last PSMM Workshop back in October — yes, snow in October!! So it’s only fitting that it chose to dump on us again between the hours of midnight and noon the morning of my Workshop last Saturday. (Oh, and do you remember the hurricaine that postponed my August workshop? I. AM. DOOMED, people. DOOMED.)

So I woke up Saturday morning to a blanket of snow covering the earth and immediately came downstairs and turned on the news, where I proceeded to sit for the next hour as Cecily and I Skyped back and forth, debating the merits of postponing versus carrying on as planned. We eventually decided to make a go of it — a decision I regretted once I found myself halfway to my destination, but at that point, I had no choice but to continue on. Eleven hardy ladies joined me, and 7 or 8 more tuned in on Skype. We had a great time, and the smaller-than-normal group was actually quite conducive to the hands-on writing exercises Cecily had planned. We were each able to read our work and receive feedback. It was awesome!

This is what I wore. I wanted to be cozy and comfortable, and that was about all that I had on my mind. I was delighted to have an opportunity to carry my new Kelly Moore Camera/Laptop Bag*!!!!

I have been wanting this for MONTHS, a YEAR in fact — ever since last January when I attended the Blissdom Conference and SWORE I’d never attend another conference without a bag that holds both my dSLR camera and its appendages as well as my laptop bag. Well, I grudgingly attended two more that way, and then I ordered this for myself with Christmas money. It’s the Libby, in case you want to check it out. I signed up to be an affiliate because I love her products so much, and you can get to her site through the button on my sidebar at any time!

The sweater is from Banana Republic. I couldn’t find my cream tank so I wore white (not the best color choice, huh?)

Skinny jeans, gray UGGs* (now on sale!!) and boot socks and I was cozy and good to go!

SUNDAY:

This is the only other photo I have this week. It was still cold and snowy so once again, I was all about the comfort factor. I picked up this scarf at Charming Charlie’s the other night, and for some reason it looked a lot cuter in the store than it did at home. I wore it all morning, feeling like I was wrapped in confetti, and as soon as I got home I took it off and gave it to my daughter, who was delighted. That should tell you something right there, I suppose. When your 9-year-old daughter wants your accessories, you may just want to reconsider your choices.

And can I just SAY that I am so tired of seeing that guitar in the corner behind my photos? Oh and also too. Does anyone want to come and take down the rest of my Christmas decorations? Otherwise I have a feeling they’ll be up until Easter.

I did the boot sock thing again — thinking that it might be nice to break up the black boots and black pants. And you’ve seen that gray drapey sweater and magenta top underneath probably at least 42 times. It’s warm and comfortable, and I love the color combination. Nuff said.

Oooooh! LOOK what I just found. I almost forgot about this. Last week I went out for drinks and shopping with a friend, and I decided to go for it and wear the “bat sweater”.

Look, Ma! I WORE IT!

I tried to jazz it up with the purple tank and boot socks. And the necklace and chunky bracelet. Tell me whatcha think!

And just pay no nevermind to those paint swatches on the all back there. They will be gone TOMORROW!!

Now for some real fashion inspiration (’cause you’re not getting much here today) be sure to check out <a

My 6-year-old and I enjoyed leftovers for lunch for several days after I made this meal. Unfortunately I tossed the instructions (I combined two recipes to achieve this creamy delight, so I’m going to have to guesstimate at recreating it.) As you may recall, I wanted to make a chicken and broccoli casserole that didn’t use Cream of Chemical Soup.

You start by making a roux. I used a half a stick of butter and 1/4 cup brown rice flour. If you aren’t gluten-free, then you can use any flour you have on hand.

First melt the butter and then dump the flour in.

Whisk it up.

A typical roux just uses milk as the liquid, but I wanted to recreate that Cream of Chicken flavor, so I used a half cup chicken stock and a cup of milk. Considering all the other dairy in this meal, next time I’ll probably reverse that.

Raw milk isn’t necessary because I’m cooking it, but it’s all I have.

Whisk it till it’s nice and thick and bubbly — about 10 minutes. Then cover and set aside. That is your “Cream of Chicken Soup”.

I had a couple cups of shredded chicken left over from a roast chicken. How yummy does that look!?

And I boiled up a 10-oz bag of broccoli.

Meanwhile I shredded 8 oz cheddar and folded most of it into the “Cream of Chicken Soup”. I saved out some for the topping. I also added sour cream and mayonaise, some dry sherry and also Worcestershire. Yeah, it isn’t exactly what you might call a low-cal meal. Here you can also add salt and pepper to taste.

Then I put it all together in a casserole dish and spread the leftover cheese on top.

After about 30 minutes in a 400-degree oven, it was bubbly and yummy and lightly brown on top.

Served with a side salad, it was quite delicious. It WAS very creamy and rich, so if that’s not your thing, you’ll want to bypass this one. I, on the other hand, LIVE for creamy and rich so I enjoyed it quite a lot!

I think it could have used more broccoli and chicken, or less sauce, so I adjusted my measurements below to work for a bigger pan, as in the original recipe.

<img
