Homage to Bela raises the question, who is truly the victim of gun violence? Is it just the criminal and the victim or is everyone affected by the crime? On a cold winter day, a myriad of community members fall victim to a young African American male shot dead in cold blood on a New York City street. As if attendants to a funeral, the victims stand quietly looking upon the aftermath of the crime. While blood continues to flow on the sidewalk, there is something eerily recognizable about the shooter and his target.

Arts to End Violence Festival May 19 - 24, 2012

Join Save Our Streets Crown Heights for a week of safe and fun activities celebrating anti-violence art! The second annual Arts to End Violence festival has inspired over 40 pieces of art, and all will be on display during the AEV festival from May 19th-24th. Events include an art-themed block party, a pop-up art display, a gallery opening, and a film night. If you missed Hemamset Angaza's premiere at BAM in January, you have another chance to see In Our Heads About Our Hair.

There will be a free screening on Saturday, May 5th in the Spike Lee screening room at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University (LIU). 4:30 pm sharp. It's a part of the Women of African Descent Film Festival, which is organized by the Brooklyn chapter of The Links, Inc., and a short Q&A will follow.

S.O.S. Talent Show this Saturday

This Saturday, April 28th, Save Our Streets Crown Heights is hosting an Increase the Peace talent showcase at P.S. 289. Poets, dancers, singers, martial artists and more will take the stage to perform for peace. There's no competition, just come out and show your support for all the Crown Heights artists who want to spread a message of nonviolence.

New York Teens Hit Albany!

On April 25th, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence made their annual pilgrimage to Albany to talk to legislators about how gun violence affects communities in New York City. Buses filled with NYC teenagers made their way to the state capitol first thing in the morning, and the teens got right to work.

Ronald Merritt, aka Mr. Duutv, was on TV himself yesterday! WPIX 11 Morning News featured Rondu during their first segment on illegal guns in New York City. We were proud to see him in his neighborhood, opening up about the death of his brother and spreading a different kind of message for his peers about guns and gun violence.
