In 1998, 18 year old LaTraun Parker made a documentary about the difficulties of growing up in Harlem. Eights years later he was shot dead on the street. Today his mother Jean Corbett-Parker fights youth gun violence and helps other parents survive the pain through her organization, Harlem Mothers. Weaving footage from LaTraun’s own film with scenes from Jean’s new life today, A Harlem Mother is a short documentary that tells this tragic and inspirational story from the dual perspectives of mother and son.

Our partner and the subject of one of our videos, the great violence prevention youth organization United Playaz of Banana Kelly High School, has teamed up with Urban Peace Movement and 106 KMEL to create a truly National event! The Bronx Chapter of United Playaz, founded by the wonderful Amelia Frank, is organizing an event in the South Bronx.

We were going to try to give our Colbert-posting a rest, but we couldn't resist posting this terrific episode from last night featuring our brilliant partner, Jackie Hilly, from New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

I can't imagine it's easy to be a guest on Colbert's show, and Jackie was pitch perfect. Plus, Colbert's opening bit is ridiculously good. He nailed the gun debate once again.

Disappointing Verdict in Police Shooting of Oscar Grant

Yesterday the verdict was handed down on the problematic shooting of 22-year-old unarmed black man Oscar Grant in Oakland, CA by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle in January 2009. Unfortunately, this was another instance of police brutality in which justice was not served for the family that has suffered a terrible loss.

Lax Utah Gun Permit Attracts Applications from Nonresidents

Laws for carrying concealed firearms vary widely by state, as do issuing standards for permits. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut do not honor other states’ permits. Some states allow nonresidents to apply for permits, including Utah whose lax regulations for the application process and broad acceptance have made it the permit of choice for gun enthusiasts. A recent article in the The New York Times called attention to a recent trend among gun owners across the country — nonresidents applying for a Utah concealed firearm permit.
