One of the questions I get from people in sexless marriages or relationships is whether they should set an ultimatum to their partner, to either make the sex come back to the relationship or know that it will have to end. I always answer with this question: “Do you want your relationship to be over?” Of course, I know that the answer is no, but I still present this question because it’s important to understand that an ultimatum is a final recourse. If you set an ultimatum to your partner, you need to be able to act on it if it doesn’t work. Otherwise, there is no real point to it, is there?

But that isn’t the only reason why I dislike ultimatums. I also think that setting one is counterproductive because one of the main killers of sexual desires is stress (especially in men). When you set an ultimatum to your partner you’re exerting a ton of pressure on them to perform. Just think if you would be sexually aroused under such a strain. I know I wouldn’t.

So, I believe an ultimatum is something that you should avoid. What you should do is try and create a pressure free environment for you and your partner to work out your problems and improve your communication. If you do that, you have a good chance of getting sex back into your relationship on a regular basis.

The main thing to realize is that your partner isn’t doing this on purpose. The lack of sex is a symptom of problems that you share. You need to work together, and only then do you have a chance of solving them.

Ever wonder why that single guyfriend who apparently is so successful financially and socially clings to his relationship with his dog (s) for dear life as if it were his life partner? Because essentially–it is.

As the divorce rate goes up and people are ever more pressed for time, we are forever trying to see where we can simplify things. How we can cut back, relax, enjoy and not have to worry. A dog presents just that in the life of a man. A friend, a partner he KNOWS how to please. This “partner” is loyal, does not demand to be taken out (well, maybe taken out….but with no expense incurred.). There are no ex-husbands in the picture and certainly no baggage from prior relationships. The meal is usually the same and a special treat comes thirty to a bag for under $5.00.

However, it is the predictability that he treasures the most. Although most men will tell you how they covet their freedom, the truth is that what they most cherish is the routine. They enjoy knowing that their “partner” will be there waiting for them when they get home, the same smile waiting to greet him, the same loving eyes looking up just waiting for that pat on the head. It’s like that idyllic wife of the 1950’s reborn in canine form.

No way is this an implication that any woman should resort to taking the feminist movement back five decades, but a woman who owns a dog can understand the beauty in the simplicity of the relationship and therefore better understand the mind of the man who loves his dog. Although she is a more intricate personality, she can understand the companionship he seeks and that she might very well seek herself. That is the beauty of commonality between dog owners– A meeting of the minds that can lead to a meeting of much more.

The issue I’m referring to is returning a call with a text message. It happens all the time. You call someone up, only to go to their voicemail. You leave a message, something like, “hey, it’s me, give me a call when you get the chance.” And then you play the waiting game. Eventually the person does get back to you, but instead of a call, they send you a text message. This message will usually say something like, “sorry I missed your call,” followed by a generic excuse like, “I was at the gym” or “I was in a meeting.” Then, if you left a question in your voicemail, perhaps the person will include the answer in their text. If your voicemail did not include a question or a reason for the call, the text message will usually be short.

Is this a problem? Not always. Let’s say you didn’t need to talk, you just needed a specific piece of information from the person. Maybe you wanted to know what time a party was starting, or if a movie was worth the $10 admission price. This question could easily be responded to via text message, and then the important answer would be given without either party wasting their valuable free time.

But sometimes, we call people not for specific information, but to talk. Someone we want to find out how a vacation was, or see how a new job is going, or just tell someone that you’ve been thinking about them. This kind of communication can be just as important as the straight-up answer-seeking call, if not more so. You are reaching out to the person, letting them know that you care about their life and their well-being.

By responding to this kind of call with a text message, you are essentially saying, “I can’t be bothered talking to you on the phone.” Of course talking to someone on the phone takes up time. Sometimes it takes a lot of time. And a lot of human beings, especially when they reach adulthood, are extremely busy. Between work, errands, family and friends, children, and so many other things, we often don’t have time just “to chat.” But what we don’t always realize is that talking to someone has value, both the in connection you make with that person and the value you give to them by showing them how important they are.

When you send a text message to respond to a voicemail, you are giving the message that the person isn’t worth your time. Now, some people suck and probably aren’t worth your time, but if the person calling is someone you care about, try to think of the message you send when you respond with a dismissive text. If you ignore or dismiss someone’s calls often enough, your friendship will surely fade. Returning a call with a text message destroys relationships, and lives.

The next generation video game console battle between Microsoft’s XBox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3 just wrote a new chapter. PlayStation 3 has become the big winner because they Xbox 360 used the HD DVD player.
