I was thinking about the government’s reduce co2 campaign TV adverts not including a web address and instead a request to search for ‘reduce co2’ or something like that.

Then out of my RSS reader pops this:

I did a search for ‘reduce co2’ (I couldn’t remember the exact phrase they ask you to search for) and sure enough out pops http://campaigns.direct.gov.uk/actonco2/

Hardly the most easy to remember URL. But it got me wondering if people do remember web addresses. I certainly do, but then I’m quite computer literate. I know many people who haven’t got a clue about domain name structure. But advising people to search on a keyword could backfire. You have to have real confidence in your ability to get to the top of a search engine.

And certainly the government could quote the web address in addition to their ‘search for…’ request. And even better would be a short URL for all their ‘promotional’ websites. How about www.aconco2.gov.uk?
