Debian 6.0.4 Released

According to the updated news at http://www.debian.org/News/2012/20120128, Debian 6.0.4 has just been release 18 hours ago.

If you are currently already on any version of Debian Squeeze, you just need to do a “apt-get update” and a “apt-get upgrade” and nothing else, as this is only a minor version upgrades.

So do you do not need to change the entries in your “/etc/apt/sources.list” file.

Lets hammer the mirrors and get patch your server/computer!

Malaysia Debian Mirror Is Up

Thanks to OSCC, the only Debian mirror in Malaysia is now updated and ready to be use.
This mirror contains the “main”, “contrib” and “non-free” repo.
Repo for Debian “sid”, “squeeze”, “lenny”, “wheezy” are all available in this mirror.
CD images are not hosted in this mirror, only the repo for you to update your current installation of your Debian.
According to the listing, I can see most architecture’s mirrors are hosting in this mirror, such as amd64, armel, i386, ia64, kfreebsd-amb64, kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, and sparc ar all available.

If you wanted to use this mirror, please change your /etc/apt/sources.list entries and and point to “http://mirror.oscc.org.my/debian”

Here, I would like to thanks to OSCC for willing to host and update the mirror for all Malaysia Debian users.

We Will Be Having Release Party Today!

Yes, although we are celebrating Debian Squeeze release party late, but I am glad that we are celebrating it.
This is the first ever Debian release party celebrated by DebMal!

We are celebrating the release party together with Gnome User Community for the Gnome3 release, and also with OpenSuse Malaysia for their OpenSuse 11.4 release.
Yes, you hear it right. 3 users community is doing the release party together.
This is how Malaysian do it, unity among the communities!

We will celebrating it at McDonald Ampang Park at 8.30pm today.
Hopefully, Ronald McDonald will be joining us!

Server Maintenance Completed

The maintenance of the original VPS which host this portal has been completed.
This portal is now pointed back to its original VPS.
The loading speed of this portal should be return to normal by now.

Portal Loading Speed Slow

Due to some issues with the VPS service provider, this portal has been temporary hosted on a tiny VPS to make sure the portal will stay online.

You might experiencing slow loading time while browsing around this portal. This will only for a few days time only.
When the original VPS problem has solved, we will be running this portal on its original VPS.

The current tiny VPS which is temporary hosting this portal alongside with a few more website is having the specs as below:

300Mhz CPU
256MB RAM
100mbps port on hostnode
http server: Nginx
database server: Mysql 5.1
PHP 5.2

Offline For Upgrades

This portal will be brought offline for several hours in these few days in order for upgrade and maintenance.

Aside from upgrading the OS of this server’s Debian Lenny to Debian Squeeze, the Apache will be recompiled as well as server components will be upgraded as well.

If you are unable to access this portal, it means the upgrades and maintenance if performing.
Please do not post anything (articles or forum post) during these few days time, as they might be not saved into the database.

Upgrading Your Debian From Lenny To Squeeze

Here is a tutorial for those who are using Debian Lenny(5) to upgrade to Debian Squeeze(6).

This tutorial is suitable for those who wanted to upgrading their Debian desktop, laptop, netbook, dedicated servers as well as VPS.

If you are using desktop, laptop or netbook, fire up your terminal emulator, such as Gnome Terminal etc.
If you are using dedicated server or a VPS, ssh into your server using a terminal emulator.

When you have done everything at above, do the following.

1. Login into root.
If you are using a server, you probably already on user root.
If you are using desktop, laptop or netbook, please do so by using the command “sudo su”.

2. Edit apt sources
Do this command:
nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Then change all the word “lenny” to “squeeze”
When done, just press Ctrl+X and press the Enter key to save it.

3. Update and Upgrade
Now, you should update your apt cache.
Do so with this command:
apt-get update

When it is done, install the new apt and dpkg using this command:
apt-get install apt dpkg

Now, the final step, upgrading your Debian installation.
Use the command below to perform the upgrade and wait.
apt-get dist-upgrade

During the upgrade, you might need to answer a few questions.
It should be safe to answer everything to “yes”.

Anyway, this tutorial is only suitable for those who have good internet connection.
If you are using a 3G broadband connection, please do not use this tutorial for upgrading your Debian Lenny.
