64Bit: What is it?

Simply put, 64Bit is something that allows memory intensive applications to use more and more RAM, precisely more than 3.25GB. That means those software which are native 64-bit in nature can use all the RAM you put in you machine. This in turn means that your applications run much much faster and open large files easily. Although 64Bit has several other advantages like security, crash protection etc but those are too much techie stuff and may frighten a non-techie reader.

Is 64Bit a new technology?

Nope ! Actually it's pretty old technology ! We had Windows XP 64-Bit do you remember? In-fact bloggers have already stared discussing about 128 Bit Computing. Now that's something new !

How much RAM does 64Bit allow me to use?

To put it simply, much more than you'll ever be able to buy ! Precisely 2⁶⁴ = 18 446 744 073 709 551 616 bits or 2 147 483 648 Gigabytes. Doesn't that look affordable? While a 32 Bit system could only address 3.25 Gigabytes of RAM. Now being more practical, a system with 4GB RAM is very well suited for 64Bit computing. But as a rule of thumb, the more RAM the better !

What do you mean by native 64Bit Software?

This means that a software has been written in such a way that it can take advantage of the extra RAM you put in your machine. This will make the software much more snappier to use.

Does 32Bit software run on 64Bit system?

Of course ! It uses the WOW64 architecture to do the same.

What about drivers?

Alas! 32Bit drivers don't work on 64Bit system, but panic not! These days most of the major manufacturers include 64Bit divers with their devices. Believe me, it's really not a problem !

Anything about software compatibility/availability?

Hope you have recently noticed the Google +1 button everywhere....reminds me of the operator ++ in the C++ language. Well is it gonna be as famous as Facebook's like?

Initially, I was being a bit skeptic about using this +1 thing....these days every new technology come at a price...your privacy. But now I thoroughly use it. What can i do....it's the trend. What about you? Does it help you recognize great sites?

Google Docs | UnRar and Code Syntax Highlighter

Did you know before that Google Docs can automatically UnRar a .rar file, and if you have code saved in say .cpp ( C++) format, it can color it's syntax also ! It highlights the code in such a way that it makes reading even very large chunks of code super easy !

How To Remove Advertisements From Foxit Reader 2011

Foxit Reader 5.0 is a superb Free PDF Reader. However, it shows advertisements. Here's a legal way to get rid of the adverts. Please note that we will be using Windows Registry here. It's a good idea to take a backup of the full registry before we proceed.

Open Windows Registry & navigate to here: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader 5.0\StartPage\Advertisement

Click on bShow Advertise and nSelIndex.

Set the bShow Advertise and nSelIndex to 0 (from 1).

Voila ! Advert Free Foxit.

Download the App. Run the executable, input the data. Then Hit Enter after every prompt. Your app will be made .

Once you run the app and complete all the steps you'll find a file named manifest.json in the app directory.

Copy that file to a new folder named say ""me_app" together with any .png format icon of 128x128 resolution named 128.png.

Avoid void main()? Nah.....

Several sites write pages on why you should avoid the void main() function in C++ and use int main() instead.
Here's an interesting quote from a programming guru:

void main() is not evil either. I agree that it should be avoided because it hides something from the programmer and is "non-standard" but it will not blow up the OS or fry hard drives and cause war in the middle-east. What it WILL do is get you pounced on by know-it-all forum posters.

You know I actually get mad when someone posts a question and all they get back is: Don't use void main() -- WTF. Honestly the only real problem with using void main() is that it gets you harassed on forums. Other than that the compiler slips in the returned int for you and all is well. It does not cause children to starve or rain not to fall. I suppose it *could* cause problems if you called main() recursively but that is entirely different subject.

Now, I think it's about personal choices, and not about programming practices. What do you think?

Online operating systems are quite known if not famous these days. But what I recently discovered is a major change inthe normal story of online OS world. Welcome http://www.silveos.com/, an operating system completely made using Microsoft Silverlight.

According to the developers:

Why Apple Never Succeeded In India

It is an open secret that Apple never succeeded in India. Although India has 'some' loyal fruity customers, yet it couldn't make the same impact which it made in the United States.

There are several reasons for Apple's failure in India. One reason may be over, highly over-pricing of everything save the iPod range. Now Apple has never been good with pricing even in the U.S. so we may rule out this point.

The next point?

Apple's teenager like attitude towards hardware development. Thunderbolt is going to be ( or is it already ? ) dead in water. It seems Apple didn't learn from the Firewire failure. Not to mention, Apple should really take treatment for it's allergy towards the Blu Ray format. And the iTunes store is not available in India. I mean who cares even if it would have been available? Apple is yet to learn the power of localized content. Beatles can make Americans hum, but India would better hum a Kishore Kumar number.

And then there is the lack of showrooms and service centers for Apple products. Now that's is a MAJOR point.

Apple has already stepped into China, opening up Apple Stores. This seems to be the last move that may save Apple and its loyal customer base n India.
Let's hope that Mr.Jobs does look a little bit lower on the map !

"Liking" in Facebook : Why I Dislike That Like Button

Haven't you already "Liked" several links, videos on Facebook? What about you, site owners, haven't you already got several "Likes" in your Facebook page, especially if you have a shopping site?

Already got more then a million likes? But does that actually count in your actual shoppers list? I think NO ! And there are several reasons for that....Here they are:

● It's easy to "Like" something on Facebook, it actually doesn't cost you a dime. However, to buy actually from any store comes at a price, the price of the material purchased.

● Second there's the cool factor. Every one would love to like the latest movie's Facebook Page, however, only a few make it to the movie hall.

However, there are some positive points too. Say you have a blog with awesome articles. And somebody really loved reading it. Then you can definitely "Like" that blog. Now that is a genuine liking.

Moral of story? "Like" what you actually like. Let not the cool factor bias your liking :) .

Make Folders With Reserved Device Names !

In Windows 7, You cannot make folder with reserved device names. So as soon as you try to make one with CON, AUX, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN, NUL etc as name, you get the following error.

But it's actually very easy to do. Look below :)

So how was it done?

The secret lies in Character Map. To open Character Map in Windows 7, go to Start, Type 'character map' in the start box and hit Enter.

Then Select the Character Shown and click Copy. Now make a new folder by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N, delete the default name, Press Ctrl+V. This pastes your blank space Character. Now type CON, PRN etc and hit Enter.

Voila ! Your Folder just got a reserved device's name !
