World’s fastest supercomputer models the unseen universe

What the universe looks like? Sure, it’s hard to tell especially since it takes billions of years for the light from most of it to reach us. Even to visualize the 70% of the matter in the universe that’s invisible is even more difficult.

That’s why scientists bring out IBM Roadrunner, the heavy iron, the world’s fastest supercomputer, to simulate crazy stuff like dark energy and dark matter for us. Through data simulating galaxies, it’s crunching full of trillions of stars at a sustained speed of faster than one petaflop, or 1 quadrillion calculations per second.

According to scientists, the remarkable of Roadrunner power pushes computational throughput beyond anything ever used before by three orders of magnitude working on the Roadrunner Universe Model. The result is the best look we’ve ever had at the origins of the mysterious unseen universe. The images will get better, there’s a 20-petaflop computer coming in 2012.

Will touchscreen PCs catch on?

Among the plethora of shiny new Windows 7 PCs, laptops and netbooks bowing amid much ballyhoo in the last week are a handful of models with touchscreens.

Touchscreens are fine for cellphones and maybe a tablet, but for a desktop PC? What additional flexibility could a touchscreen offer that a keyboard, mouse or scratchpad can’t? And won’t your computer screen soon be covered with finger oil smudges and streaks? Touchscreens will be a boon to screen-wipey makers, but no one else, right?

I had a chance to reach out and touch touchscreen PCs from Sony and HP over the last couple of weeks, and I’ve come to the conclusion that for desktop PCs, touchscreens are the most important input innovation since the mouse. Within a couple of years, touchscreens will be a pervasive feature on a majority of new Windows PCs.

But what about Apple? After all, Jobs & Co. legitimized touch as an acceptable interface for the masses with the iPhone. But Apple’s new iMac line, as pretty as it is, doesn’t include touchscreens.

All you need to do is learn where to activate each of the chords located on the shirt’s “frets,” press your finger there and start strumming away.

Sure, you’re a guitarist suddenly. But don’t worry, anyway you’ll usually only need to remember three chords. This $30 playable T-shirt is almost a real musical instrument. Sure beats Guitar Hero. How about an all-shirt band? Let’s watch, listen and learn:

Widescreen DSi LL in Japan, November

Next month, Nintendo Myopic fans will be happy, as November 21 sees the launch of the Widescreen DSi LL, a bigger version of its handheld console. Available in dark brown, burgundy and natural white, the DSi LL has a 4.2-inch screen, compared with its little brother’s 3.2 inches.

There’s no information yet as to when the Dsi LL will be available in the US, but we would expedt it should be here for the holidays in time. You can compare the Dsi LL in the specs with the DSi and DS Lite, and see a bonus shot of it.

Breathing Chair hides a comfortable seat

Breathing Chair hides a comfortable seat inside a foam cube. This may look like a weird, foam cube. And it is! But it’s also a chair, one of the cleverest we have ever seen.

Just look closely: the triangular voids are larger in the middle of the cube. Actually, they’re meticulously placed, so that when you sit down it makes the shape of a chair and forms to you. It goes back to being a cube, when you stand up. A wesome right?
