It's been 10½ months since we lost Quila, our once teenage rebel fur kid who grew into a spirited, feisty Senior.

And this 3½ month lockdown has been particularly hard without a fur kid to distract and amuse us with her antics, and to bring some joy and lightness into our days.

After a year bouncing from commitment to commitment, we decided to take a longer-than-usual break over Christmas and New Year to relax and recharge. However, we found ourselves spending a lot of time sitting in front of our computers, preparing our websites and businesses for the new year, and not relaxing!

So, come Easter, both of us were in need of a break and we knew we had to go away to ensure that we did relax.

July marked a couple of personal milestones—our silver wedding anniversary and our half centuries—and we'd hope to take time off to celebrate. So, at the end of July we headed to Bundeena for the weekend.

So Long, Sarong

It had to happen at some point. After almost 20 years, my sarong has worn thin and finally torn.

The tear is not close to an edge where the material could be cut and re-hemmed. It's not a small rent that could be hidden with close stitching. Instead it's a ragged rip in the middle bordered by thinning threads that barely keep the hole from growing.

A sarong - just a patterned, rectangular piece of material. Yet it holds the key to so many memories.

Every now and then I look at how irregularly we post to our blogs (or maybe, I should say the blogs to which I post: this news blog, A Learner Yogi and From Deb's Kitchen) and wonder how people can generate so much content for theirs. So, here I am, another new year, staring at a blank screen and wondering, “Do I have anything to write?”.

OK, so four months later I'm finally getting around to blogging our Melbourne trip.

After a week in Townsville for my Aunt's birthday celebrations, we flew to Melbourne for the Comedy Festival. We left on a relatively cool (30°C), clear Townsville day, stopped over in Brisbane for a couple of hours, then arrived to a cold (15°C), drizzly Melbourne evening. Welcome to Melbourne!

My cousin in Townsville invited the family together over the Easter weekend to celebrate my Aunt's 90th birthday. Mum and I visited Townsville three years ago and since then I have wanted to take Hubby there for a holiday. However, it had also been three years since we'd been to Melbourne and the Comedy Festival so we decided to spend a week in Townsville and then fly to Melbourne for the Comedy Festival.

I currently subscribe to a website that lists special deals on goods and services. I'm always on the look out for potential birthday gifts, massages or house maintenance services, local restaurants and ‘escapes’. In particular, escapes ensure that we get out of the house and away from our usual routine.

I really enjoy the challenge of trying to take a photo a day for a month but my last two months were both January: 2013 and 2014. I wanted to try a different season but couldn't wait until next year. So, I took a photo a day in July.

I've been using escalators for years - in train stations, airports, department stores, wherever I've had the opportunity and the stairs have seemed too far away or too challenging in the circumstance. Foolishly, it turns out, I've been riding that network believing casual observation of its signage had been sufficient to afford me safe and comfortable passage.

I'm at it again! I'm posting a photo a day in January.

Last year I posted a photo a day and really enjoyed the experience. I felt the exercise made me take more notice of what was happening around me.

Thirteen days into January I have not ventured far from home. My primary subjects seem to be the Summer flowers in the neighbourhood and I'm trying very hard not to post lots of photos of Quila (not that she would stay still long enough for a photo). I am uploading the photos to our Jan 2014 Flickr set and on my learneryogi instagram feed.

I am also struggling to find time to edit and upload the photos every day. However, that means I'm busy, which is a good thing!

Quila Took on the Law And She Won

Picture this.

A pedestrian overpass lets people cross from one side of the railway line—pass the ticket offices, indicator screens and ticket barriers of the railway station and over a busy major road—to the other side of the line. It is part of a route that Quila and I take when we go to collect our mail at the post office. Sometimes police officers are standing at the barriers to deter potential lawbreakers and/or apprehend them.
