As we talked above, adding green to a bedroom setting is the ‘in’ thing. Since some of the lighter tones of green are calming and create a peaceful ambiance, they are good choices for the bedroom. But stay away from the darker and brighter versions of the color when adding them to places of relaxation and rest. Remember that the more neutral a setting is, greater will be the impact of accent colors. If you wish to create an inimitable and cool bedroom think of mixing two accent colors using pillows or rugs. Orange and purple seem to work surprisingly well with hints of green.

Built-In DIY Wine Storage

Obviously, one of the most convenient and attractive ways to store your vino collection is to integrate the storage into your existing space by building it in. DIY Network shares these beautiful X shelf inserts (that you can buy or make at home based on the size of your shelves) that create a beautiful way to store and display your wine.

Live Laugh Decorate used piece of wine lattice (but you could certainly use a few pieces of the everyday lattice from the hardware store) and built it into an empty cabinet as a part of her creative and lovely DIY kitchen banquette.

Our next built-in DIY wine storage idea, by Pursuit of Healthfulness, uses a bit of lumber and trim to create an awesome built-in wine rack in the narrow space on the side of a cabinet. Not only does this wine rack take advantage of some small, previously unused space in their home, but it also is the perfect way to bring the Pinot supply into their living room bar area.

HGTV‘s built-in custom DIY wine rack is made with plywood and a 4-inch hole-saw attachment. Not only can this wine rack function as a visual room divider for an open space, but by painting the inside a fun color, it also adds a fun, bold statement piece to the room.

Not all of us are lucky enough to have extra space for built in wine storage, so our next few DIY wine racks are all easily wall-mounted for those small-space areas! This fist DIY wine rack by Shanty 2 Chic simply uses a bit of wood and some large hex screws to create the structure of the wine rack. add on some stain and chalkboard paint and you have a gorgeous, rustic wine rack that is organized and labeled!

If you are a connoisseur of sparkling wines (or just like the look of this storage method!), then this next DIY wine rack is for you! This magnificent riddling rack by Hart’s Desire Photography was handcrafted with some leftover fencing and a bit of scrap wood to create the desired 45 degree storage angle.

As if there weren’t already enough projects to do using wood shipping pallets, I am going to add another one into the mix for you! This incredible re-purposed DIY wine rack by The Kurtz Corner takes into account not only the bottles, but the glasses too in their all-inclusive, rustic wine storage rack.

Our next DIY wine rack was created and sold by Erin’s Lane on Etsy. However, the DIY idea is simple and the result is stunning, so as long as you can get your hands on some barn wood and a few railroad spikes, you will have an eye-catching wine rack in no time!

It may seem odd to have an entire category of pipe and tube wine racks, but the shape and availability of these items makes them the perfect building blocks for vino storage! Our next DIY wine rack (sold on Amazon but you can get some of these from your local hardware store) is a breathtaking wall display made of terracotta clay tubes. Buy a few or buy a bunch… either way you can create a perfect vintage wine display wall.

Looking for something a little smaller and with a bit more funk? Our next DIY wine rack, by Adventures in Creating, was made with various sizes of PVC pipe. Arranged in a fun, sculptural way, this wine rack is really a work of art!

Need some wine storage and a side table? Why not make two-in-one? This mod, industrial side table, by Adventures of an Almost 40 Year Old Intern, uses drainage pipes held together with turnbuckles to store your beloved wine collection. Add a glass table top and you can even have a little bar area on top!

If you are looking for something on the cheap, you will love our next DIY wine rack. Originally created on ReadyMade and featured on Bob Vila, this DIY wine rack is simply made by lining up cardboard tube mailers. How easy and spectacular is that!?

While the answer may vary depending on the situation, one thing is for sure: very few people can do a good job with someone constantly looking over their shoulder.

Start by selecting professionals who are recommended by people you trust. Then set aside a time to check in with them on a daily basis. And stick to it. For example, perhaps greeting the experts at the beginning of the day and getting a rundown of the planned progress is a good way to get started in the morning. Then viewing the work at the end of day (either just before or right after the crew has left) can serve as an important time to formulate questions and note concerns that can be discussed the following morning. Fight the temptation to check in repeatedly throughout the day, interrupting your team and making people feel scrutinized.

The interiors of this brilliant home are clad in black and white and the use of just these two tones is so gorgeous that at times we are left wondering if we are watching a colorful image in black and white photography! From the plush and well decorated bedrooms to the artistic and exquisite living room, your eyes are treated to a visual delight in black and white. Though the modern trend of creating a sleek setting that presents clean and well defined lines is adhered to, the extravagant flooring and the lavish furnishings sport a touch of Hollywood Regency.

Sometimes a little mishap can bring about some inspiration. When Emily of Merrypad was left with a chewed up blanket, she turned it into a bed for her lovable dog. Featuring recycled fabric and old towels as filling, this project is both beautiful and budget-friendly. When repurposing fabric, be sure to note the care instructions- some items, like decorative throws, need special treatment.

Your dog isn’t boring, so why should their bed be? Showcase their personality with a dog bed in a playful print. Since it isn’t very large, a bed is the perfect way to inject some color in a neutral area. For added durability, use fabric that can stand a little rough play. This project from Manhattan Nest uses a heavy-duty shower curtain in a cotton-bamboo blend. It’s sure to withstand some chewing here and there.

Dish towels aren’t just for cleaning! With a little ingenuity and some basic sewing skills, you can transform the kitchen staple into a comfortable bed for your canine. Use a sheet of foam as the mattress and sew a case out of two dish cloths. If you decide to use a pattern, try to match it on all sides for a seamless appearance. [via Martha Stewart]

Old items gathered from around the house become new again with this project from Briggs Lekehus. If your child has outgrown their mattress, turn it into your family pet’s new sleep spot. Fold the mattress into thirds (or in half if your dog is larger) and top with a piece of faux fur. Secure with a belt on each end.

The design of the Redeveloper Apartment is indeed both inventive and ergonomic to the core as it does away with the traditional notion of well-defined spaces that are bifurcated using large walls. With this particular apartment not having enough space to incorporate different segregated public and private quarters, the architects decided to opt for modern additions that save on space. Tall elliptical columns in silk stretched to steel frames and curved glass have been used as additional closet space and a cool shower.

The fact that the entire apartment is covered in one single tone of white ensures that there is no visual fragmentation of the area either. Drapes that offer privacy at an instant can be used when needed to separate the elliptical hubs from the rest of the home. A small home work station nestled in one of the closets and elegant shelves that blend in with the walls add to the tidy look of the setting.

Plush décor in neutral tones and a comforting bedroom complete the interiors of this creative apartment in Canada. Topping this off is an artificial ‘garden’ of sorts in the balcony made up of fiber-optic acrylic rods that dance to the tune of the wind. Talk about a home that seems ready to embrace the future!

The task of adding a fresh extension to this Victorian house was entrusted to the architects from Jackson Clements Burrows who did an impeccable job of striking the perfect balance between the interiors and the exterior.

Original front elevation of the home was kept intact while incorporating brand new interiors that included two new upper level extensions that provided private quarters for the adults and the children separately. While the stylish lower level sports a living space that is connected visually with the backyard and a dining area, the top floors house the bedrooms which offer lovely views along with ample privacy.

The two new cantilevered structures added to the original residence do not alter the street elevation of the home and most would be surprised to find such modern interiors as they step in. Large floor-to-ceiling glass windows accentuate the open living plan and also offer ample ventilation. A spacious courtyard with a refreshing pool, lovely deck space, a fireplace and lush green surroundings tempts you to spend more time outdoors than inside!

Plywood and Lumber Tables

Our first DIY dining table and Ike, the adorable pup sitting next it, are both show-stoppers!  Handcrafted by Decor and the Dog and inspired by a plan by Ana White, this stunning farmhouse table was made with stud-grade whitewood for a rustic charm.

Are you a total beginner? Well, then the next beautiful DIY dining table, by Creature Comforts, is definitely the one for you! Built by simply attaching several 2 x 8 boards (cut to 6 feet) together and adding some legs, this gorgeous gray-stained table has a simplistic beauty that will bring character to your space.

Our next DIY table isn’t exactly for beginners. If you are feeling ambitious, try this incredible DIY dining table by DIY-My-Homes, made with plywood, time, and a whole lot of patience! Seriously, have you ever seen something so beautiful in your life?! Oh wait, here’s another one of their tables that is equally as breathtaking.

As a DIY fanatic, I always love seeing projects that utilize the existing space very well. Have a small kitchen island and only a small amount of space to work with? Try extending your kitchen island by attaching some plywood or lumber, adding legs, and painting it a fun color like this DIY project, originally from Mixr.se and featured on Trendir. I love that they also painted the side of the island’s countertop to seamlessly tie everything together!

Reclaimed Wood Objects

Rather than build an entire dining table from scratch, why not re-purpose an object you have hanging out in your basement or garage? Our next DIY dining table, posted on Instructables by Julien Thibeault, was made out of a old reclaimed wood door wrapped in a sheet of metal. He added some Ikea table legs, oil, and stain to complete the sleek, chic look.

If you are lucky enough to have a few reclaimed beams salvaged from a previous home or remodel, this table, by This Old House, would be perfect for you! The reclaimed beams are cut to size to form the table top, which is supported by a base constructed using 3/4″ gas piping.

Pallet Tables

One of the easiest items to re-purpose into a dining table (or anything for that matter!) is a shipping pallet. Our first DIY dining table by ScrapHacker was built by adding a few boards over the top of the sipping pallet for a smooth tabletop and attaching some IKEA legs. With a fresh coat of white paint, this awesome DIY dining table looks good enough to eat… on.

The next DIY dining table was made by disassembling six oak pallets and using the wood to construct a table. By maintaining the architecture and rustic quirkiness of the pallets, Little Paths So Startled created something incredibly lovely and artistic out of objects with such humble beginnings.

Another DIY pallet dining table worth drooling over is this one, made by A Beautiful Mess! Crafted by cutting the pallet slats to a uniform size, attaching them to a piece of plywood, and adding some super attractive hairpin legs, this table radiates an amazing vintage, rustic vibe!

Other Materials

All of these tables are all incredible, but what if you don’t want an all-wood table? Our next table, featured on Osbourne Wood Products, might be made of pine, but it features a magnificent tile center that steals the show and all of the attention! How lovely are those tiles?! Just think of all of the possibilities for tiling your own custom dining table!

Last but not lease, this sensational table, designed by Designer Eco, boasts a poured concrete top and a chunky base made of several wood posts. Find some friends to lift the tabletop onto the base, and you will have a gorgeous one-of-a-kind statement piece in your dining area!

The best part of these DIY dining table projects is that you could mix and match ideas for your space (i.e. loving the base from one table but using the tabletop idea from another!). All of these eye-catching tables make me want to go upgrade our kitchen table immediately!

Lemon Chiffon

Next we move to a softer a shade, yet one no less lemony. In fact, lemon chiffon is the pastel version of lemon yellow. Did you know there’s a Sherwin- Williams paint color called “Lemon Chiffon“? This hue evokes soft candy-colored shades and baked goods with pastel frosting. Which is probably why it’s absolutely delightful in the kitchen. [from Ventana Construction]

Yellow Green

Yellow green is edgy, yet there’s something natural about this hue. Perhaps that’s because so much of the plant life outside of our windows is in the yellow green family. Why shouldn’t your interior celebrate it?! In this next image from NOA Architects, we see a yellow green accent wall and recessed display areas in a modern kitchen.

Sometimes a little yellow green goes a long way. Golden Yellow

We end today’s post with a trio of rooms that celebrate golden yellow. Gold is distinguished, and it creates a rich feel in any room it inhabits. Below we see the shade on both the curtain and wallpaper. Throw in some golden yellow furniture, then contrast it with bright white, and you have a room that makes a big statement. 1. Look around you for inspiration.

As they say, inspiration is everywhere! The first step in designing a space is to get inspired. By opening your eyes and your mind to potential inspiration, you will be surprised how often you find inspiration when you are least expecting it.

Look at objects, buildings, clothes, etc. in new ways… would the decorative column on that building look amazing as a table leg? Would that woman’s scarf be the perfect color scheme for your new space? Like this Restoration Hardware desk inspired by an airplane wing, inspiration comes in many forms and ways, so open yourself up to the possibility of receiving it and always document it when possible!

You may not have a use for it now, but you may look at a photo of that lovely building column a few months later and realize is is perfect for the legs of a dining table for your new space.

2. Something good is not always something right.

You just found the most amazing sofa. It took your breath away with its beauty. You are tempted to buy it on the spot, but take a moment to think, “I know this is good (very good!), but is it right for the space?” Well, as Robb Whittlef of Historic Studio taught us at Design Camp, you may find that looking at it with this approach allows to realize the piece could be the wrong style, wrong size (umm… it has to fit through the door. Measure your doorways is tip 2.1) or scale in the room, wrong material (would you put a silk chair or a sharp glass table in a space with a 2-year-old?), wrong color, wring price, or any number of things that people tend to overlook when they fall head-over-heels for a lovely item. Be smart and look at each potential design element as objectively as you can to avoid disappointment in the future.

For (a very obvious) example, I love the shape and size of the sofa in this family room featured in House Beautiful. Would it work as well in my 1 bedroom apartment? I think not.

3. Design with an awareness for who uses the space.

I touched on this subject quite a bit last week when talking about the future of universal design, but I will happily emphasize again how important it is to be conscious of who will be using the space you design.

Being smart and thinking ahead about not only your current situation, but also your future situation (i.e. do you want to retire in your home sometime in the relatively near future? Are you looking to have children and expand your family?), when designing a space will lead to a much happier and more functional home, such as this shower design by H. Stern Interiors that takes into account aging clients.

4. Design a space you will still love years from now.

I spent some time last week talking about design trends for 2013 and 2014 so you should have a decent idea of what to expect to see in your favorite magazines, stores, and blogs. However, there is something to note here: if you don’t love it, don’t incorporate it into your room! You shouldn’t force something that isn’t your style into a space simply to join a trend because you will want to ditch it as soon as the trend is over (which is fine for a $30 vase but not for a $3,000 sofa!).

Avoid trendy items and styles if they aren’t something you love now and will continue to love in several years. Nothing will make a room more outdated than if it houses a collection of passed trends that do not fit in with your style. Aim for a timeless base with some fun, interchangeable small items, like pillows and accessories, to keep things fresh, like this spectacular dining room by Design Camp speaker Nathan Turner.

5. Make it personal.

This is my decorating mantra. Sure catalog pages are lovely, but I want to walk into a space and know who inhabits it. As I say on my blog, “What makes a place ‘home’ is not only comfort and familiarity, but also the personality of the space, the way a space makes one feel, and the memories it contains. The reason ‘home’ feels so wonderful is because it is deeply personal and is the physical manifestation of one’s experiences, dreams, feelings, and outlook on life.” Therefore, the best way to create a room that is personal to you is to invest in pieces you truly adore.

Surround yourself with photos, memories, collections, and mementos of your favorite people, things, experiences, or feelings. For example, I was looking for a piece of artwork for my living room and decided to frame a gorgeous skeleton key my Nana had given me that unlocked the door to her childhood home. Guests see a beautiful framed key, but when I look at it, I am reminded of Nana. Make your space a reflection of yourself, for your benefit and for the benefit of other people getting to know you though your space.

6. You have 20 seconds to make an impression.

This was originally a tip given to the Design Campers by Seattle real estate extraordinaire, Cassie Daughtrey, in the context of how the design of a home affects resale value and speed. However, I think Cassie’s great advice can apply to the design process in any scenario.

What is the first impression you want to give your guests about the space? When you walk in the entrance of the room, what are the first things you see? What DON’T you see? How does the space feel? By seeing the space objectively through the eyes of others and designing with the mindset of making an immediate impact, you can make sure that your space is giving out the impression you intended.

7. Make a plan and stick to your budget.

Yes, money is typically a factor for most of us when designing a space, so there is no sense in dancing around this topic. Design is an investment and can add value to your home, as Cassie mentioned above. However, it is so important to make a plan from the very start and make smart financial decisions as you go. Sometimes that means being creative or finding alternative options for pieces that are out of your budget.

Whether that means you get your hands dirty and give some DIY projects a whirl or do a bit of research to find inexpensive pieces similar to the expensive ones you are swooning over (like these two Chesterfield sofas in HGTV Magazine), creativity and research can go a long way in stretching a budget. Planning ahead and making intelligent financial decisions will ensure that you can creatively complete the space you set out to design.

8. Light your space well.

I mentioned last week how incredible lighting design is to an interior space. Sure, all of our rooms look gorgeous in the bright sunlight! But properly lighting a space so it looks just as amazing on a gloomy day or at night is crucial. Lighting designer Randall Whitehead says the best way to light a space is using light layering, which is comprised of four types of light: Decorative, Accent, Task, and Ambient. Decorative lighting is the “architectural jewelry” of the room and does not have to have a purpose beyond looking fantastic (i.e. chandeliers)!

Accent lighting defines drama and creates areas of interest or dimension, such as on track lighting on artwork or landscape uplights. Task lighting does the heavy lifting and actually provides the lighting for work areas, such as reading lamps and under-cabinet lighting. Finally, ambient lighting fills in the gaps and gives the room an overall soft glow.

By layering these four kinds of light, you will be amazed at how much of a positive impact proper lighting has on the space you are working so hard to design (like these amazing designs by Randall! Photos via Marin Home and Garden Expo)!

9. Take photographs.

Everyone loves before and after shots, like this amazing kitchen remodel by The Inspired Room! But beyond that, it is always nice to have pictures of where you started, photos of the process, and lots of nice (well-lit — see above!) pictures of the final product. Whether they are just for personal use or for a website/blog, great photos can come in handy! Photos can also help you better understand your personal design process so things are even easier the next time you design a space.

10. Have fun!

This one is the most important one! Enjoy the process and take pride in your hard work.
