Jacksonville Adobe User’s Group

I wanted to share a new group that I’m starting here in Jacksonville, FL. I have been officially approved to start an Adobe User’s Group! I’m excited. Each month we’ll cover a different topic from what’s new in CS6 to how-to’s and tips and tricks. The Calm After The Storm

I live in Florida, which means that there could be a hurricane or tropical storm at any time, regardless of your plans. Well, we got hit with a tropical storm last night and it just doesn’t want to go away! I apologize that there was no post this morning, but I was taking a much needed nap since I was up all night keeping our dog calm!

So take the day off with me and remember those who serve our country. After all, today isn’t about BBQ-ing, it’s about the men, women and service dogs that help keep us safe.

Better Composition and Lighting Tips {Photography Week}

I’m rounding up Photography Week with another post by Pretty Handy Girl. Her post on Better Composition and Lighting Tips will help you get the perfect photo you’ve been trying to get. To create drama in a photo, change your perspective, get rid of the cluttered background, fill the frame with the subject, and create multiple diagonal visual lines. As far as lighting goes, your goal is to use natural light as much as possible. Avoid photographing at night, indoors (away from windows) or using a flash. Newborn Photoshoot & Photography Tips Roundup {Photography Week}

Sara at Mom Endeavors is a lifesaver. I’m going to be doing a photo shoot with a baby soon and was feeling really nervous about what to shoot. Her article “Newborn Photoshoot & Photography Tips Roundup” really gave me some great ideas and tips. Sara knew she’d need the following things for a good shoot: good natural light, her 50mm lens, some props to use and patience (it’s a baby after all). But, she also did some research. She provides links to some great articles for us to read to really get that great newborn shot. Her shoot turned out great, and her pictures really inspired me, so I can only hope I get some great shots at my shoot as well! [Newborn Photoshoot & Photography Tips Roundup]

Get creative & sneaky with your photography {Photography Week}

Kristen Duke Photography has some great tutorials on photography, but my favorite was one about being creative and sneaky. Sneaky is a good thing when it comes to photography – you get those candid, unexpected shots of your subject, instead of a bunch of posed ones. Framing your subjects with flowers and foliage or doors and ladders adds some interest to an otherwise plain shot. Crouching down, or standing on your tippy-toes can also give a different point of view. Read Kristen’s post, then get out there and be creative and sneaky! Simplicity in your Shots {Photography Week}

Sweet C’s Designs has an entire category devoted to photography, so it was hard to pick just one post to share with you today! I picked her Composition 101: Simplicity in Your Shots post because although it seems like a basic concept, many people forget this step while photographing objects.

One of Courtney’s composition tips is simplicity- with a cluttered photo, your eyes aren’t drawn to the correct object – you want your viewer’s focus to be on your subject, not it’s background! Next, she shows that pulling in the shot closer will create more visual interest. Be sure to check out her article for more tips, and the rest of her site for more tutorials! Indoor Photography {Photography Week}

Pretty Handy Girl has a great photography tutorial which covers how to add light while shooting indoors. She uses white foam core for a background, which helps make the subject pop and a mirror to reflect back light to the bottom of the item.

She will also show you what her camera settings were, and a couple Photoshop tricks to take out the background seam and to make colors more vibrant. If you’ve wanted to learn more about digital photography and about DSLR cameras, Lifehacker Night School is a great place to start. They have some free articles that will give you the basics you need to get started, and you can read them all in one evening.

Here is a list of the courses available that relate to the Basics of Photography:

Part I: Understanding How Your Digital Camera Works
With so many cameras available, figuring out how all the specifications and options translate into your everyday use is complicated. For their first lesson in the Basics of Photography, you’ll learn how cameras work and make sense of what that means in terms of choosing a camera to buy and how that choice affects your photographs.

Part II: Your Camera’s Automatic and Assisted Settings
In this lesson you will take a look at your camera’s various assisted and automatic settings.

Part III: Your Camera’s Manual Settings
In this lesson they take away your handicap and jump into the fun stuff: manual mode.They look at the details of shutter speed, ISO, and aperture, as well as how those settings affect your photos.

Part IV: Composition and Technique
A well-composed photograph is really a matter of opinion, but there are a few tricks that tend to result in better pictures.

Part V: Editing Images in Post
