We all know that Denver has some of the best microbrew beers in the country. But we also know that Denver residents do not always drink beer. The Mile High City has plenty of other beverage options, including a burgeoning local wine scene.

Since our post about Denver brewery design was such a hit, we decided to carry that idea over into the wine industry. Wineries are beautiful to visit, and they can also be a wonderful source of interior design inspiration.

To prove that point, we have selected three Denver wineries that pair excellent drinks with beautiful interior design ideas.

Cru Wine Bar

With locations at Larimer Square and the Vistas at Park Meadows, Cru is a convenient hotspot for Denver wine enthusiasts. And we love the offbeat elegance of their interior design scheme.

Some interior design inspiration and kitchen design ideas from Cru:

Richly colored accents will instantly enliven basic neutrals. We love how the deep purple seating complements the more neutral golden tones of the walls and the lamps.
Use vintage signs to add a dose of whimsy to your kitchen design. We also love the mounted candlesticks scattered amongst the signs.
Mix and match seating to create comfortable elegance. Pairing banquette seating with traditional wooden chairs is a great way to enliven your kitchen design.

Exposed brick adds instant warmth to a large space. This works especially well for large fireplaces and hearths.
We love the combination of dark wood paneling and warm beige countertops. Keeping cabinets and counters in the same color family makes a space feel cohesive, and the warmth of these colors works well with the exposed brick walls
Keep lighting warm and golden- it makes for a more elegant and welcoming atmosphere. Try using shaded lamps and recessed lighting with dimmer switches.

Eight Mudroom Ideas For Clean Colorado Homes

Winter in Denver can be pretty messy. Snow, slush, mud, rain- you name it, and it has probably been tracked into your home. And of course, there is all that winter gear- snowboats, heavy jackets, hats, gloves, etc.

Winter is when a great mudroom really proves its usefulness. A carefully planned, well-executed mudroom can transform winter's chaos into orderly neatness, stylishly taming all of that gear and slush.

Sounds pretty great, right? Here are eight mudroom ideas to get you started:

Use flooring that wipes clean. Stone floors, treated wood floors, cement flooring, and rubber matting are all great options.
Provide multiple storage options. Different items are stored in different ways, so make sure that your mudroom includes shelves, drawers, and hooks.
Provide seating. Give your family a place to sit down and take off their boots. This could be anything from a simple bench to multiple chairs.
Add visual interest with bold paint- Get creative with the limited wall space in your mudroom. Paint the back of your shelves in a bold color to really make them pop.
Give each member of your family their own section. The key to great organization is making sure that everyone's stuff has a home. If you have four family members, install four hooks and cubbies in your mudroom. Encourage your kids to keep their area neat and clean.
Add a peg rail for ski gear- All of that Colorado mountain gear needs a home. Mount a simple peg rail to store skis, snowboards, and snowshoes.
Use roll-away components to save space. If you do not have a lot of space, look for roll-away seating that can be stored underneath your shelving. Roll-away bins and baskets are also a great option.
Label, label, label- Use storebought labels or make your own with pretty scrapbooking paper. Label different bins for things like hats, gloves, leashes, keys, etc.

Color is important so ideally you want a restful shade, blues and greens are calming colors where as red can be overpowering and not offer a good night’s sleep.
Don’t over look the ceiling, if you look up and see a blank ceiling when you lie in bed you need to add some warm and intimacy. Try asking the paint store to knock down the paint color 20% for the ceiling, or add a torchiere to add pools of warm light.

Great Sports Rooms: Watch Denver Sports In Style

Feeling inspired by the Super Bowl?

Although football season is over, there are plenty of other Denver sports coming up this year. The Colorado Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche are in season, and before you know it, the Colorado Rockies will start up. Maybe Tim Tebow will even take the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl next year.

In any case, its always best to be prepared. Start getting your sports room or game room in shape for any season with these simple tips on designing sports rooms or game rooms.

Use sectional seating to create comfortable seating for groups both large and small. L-shaped couches are a great seating solution for sports rooms, providing ample space while still allowing everyone to easily see the television.
Use leather, wood, and metallic accents to create a casual elegance.
Look for unique pieces of sports memorabilia that are pretty enough to serve as standout decorations
Make sure to provide plenty of table space for drinks and snacks. Large wooden or glass coffee tables are a great solution.
Remember that sports rooms do not have to be overwhelmingly masculine. Style your room in whatever way feels most comfortable to you.
Use lamps instead of harsher overhead lighting to create a cozy, friendly atmosphere.

Reuse old shutters or doors as wall decorations- repaint your old doors or shutters in a fresh hue and look for ways to use them in your home. When mounted on the wall, shutters become instant organizers, storing everything from mail to photos. Old doors can be used to top shelves or coffee tables, or mounted behind the bed as a unique headboard.

Keep in mind that repurposing furniture does not have to involve huge transformations. Here are a few of our favorite quick tricks for transforming your rooms.

If you are tired of a piece of furniture, try moving it into a different room. You will be amazed how that simple change can transform a piece from old and boring to new and intriguing.
Replace the knobs on your dressers and cabinets. Look for colorful, interesting knobs that incorporate elements of the room's design.
Remove doors or glass panels to open up your shelving units. Tidy up the shelves or add a few objects to create a new display.
Repaint your furniture or apply a new stain. It will look like a totally different piece.

Design for Denver Guys: What You Can Use From Brewery Design

Interior design for the Denver man can reflect the things he loves - Denver's breweries, for example - while still looking stylish. When decorating your bachelor pad with a brewery aesthetic in mind, try to select subtle accents that will give the allure of a brewery without feeling like your home is actually a bar.

To recreate the brewery look, add a high wooden table with bar chairs. This will give you a table that references a bar but also fits well in a home. Use wall shelving in your kitchen and dining room to display your pub glasses.

When looking to insert that brewery feel into your home, avoid neon-lit signs. It may seem fun to support your local brewery by putting a bar sign in your home; however, the bright lights take away from the ambiance, and the name brand on a wall takes the brewery look too far. You want your home to have a rugged feel without looking like a late-night bar.

Focus on the subtler style aspects of breweries like exposed brick, large open windows and clean, masculine lines.

Similar to neon signs, bright, large lettering should also be avoided. A brewery might have their company logo or menu posted on their walls, but in the home you should try to keep any wall writing neutral and relevant.

For wall decor, try hanging up local artwork for a decorative detail that can often be found in Denver's breweries. You can also take up wall space with a chalkboard, just make sure to use white chalk and small lettering. A great way to add the brewery feel is to include industrial details like ladders, metal containers and wooden barrels in the decor. These objects, typically found in a brewery, can add an interesting pop to your home.

Creating a Functional Mudroom for Your Denver Home

Your home is your refuge. When it’s rainy and chilly outside, you hurry into your home to get warm and dry. When it’s snowing hard, you sit by a fire and watch the flakes fall from through a window.

But your home can feel less like a refuge when there's a trail of rainy puddles or clumps of snow falling from a coat that’s been tossed on the sofa. Keep your home dry and warm by making your mudroom functional and beautiful.

A mudroom can be in a small room off your front door or a laundry room pulling double duty. If you have no space available that could be used as a mudroom , you can easily customize your entry to serve the purpose.

This charming and woodsy mudroom is a great example of the combination of charming Denver interior design and functionality. It’s organized and has a place for everything. There are plenty of hooks to hang up coats and purses and there’s even a small section in the middle to put miscellaneous things, from glasses to sunscreen. At the bottom, there’s space to put shoes and boots. It’s also a few inches off the ground, so that keeps all the dirt and snow away from your flooring.

This mudroom is simpler but just as functional. The hooks make another appearance here. They are definitely the most important part of a mudroom . Another organization strategy that you can use in your mudroom is the cubbies that you see at the top of the photo. You can use woven baskets to hold all of your items out of sight. Also, a bench will be an great addition to your mudroom . After all, you need a place to sit to take off your wet snow boots.

Here’s another mudroom that includes hooks, a bench, and cubbies at the top. It’s painted black, which gives it a sharp and attractive look, just make sure that you get a sturdy piece with heavy staining so that it doesn't easily chip. A smart idea that you can use from this mudroom is the tray that’s being used to hold boots and shoes. Any wetness and snow will be contained in this tray which you can then, in turn, just dump in the sink. You could also add an umbrella stand here.

Dress up your mudroom by painting it a fun color and adding an outdoor rug. You can work with a Denver interior design agency to create a beautiful mudroom for your home.

5 Tips for Choosing a Denver Interior Decorator

Selecting the right Denver interior decorator for your family requires a little bit of time and research on your part. You likely don't have a lot of time to waste searching pages and pages on Google to find the right interior decorator, which is why it's important to narrow down your list of potential decorators as quickly as possible.

These five tips can help streamline the process to ultimately save you time.

Ask friends, relatives and colleagues for the names of their interior designers. The Better Business Bureau is another source you can use to gather a few names of local interior decorators who have satisfied their clients. Interview between two and four designers, reviewing their portfolios and asking for references from recent clients. Ask the decorator's previous clients about how easy she was to work with, how informed she kept them throughout the process and if the finished result is what they wanted and expected.
Ask your potential designers about their flexibility to meet at the times that you are available, both for the initial interview and for the project. Remember that designers are professionals too so you'll need your own flexibility, not imagining that a decorator will be available every Sunday or on Friday nights, for example! Get a good idea of how long your project will take from the potential designers and, when you check references, ask their recent clients if they finished on time.
Study the decorator's website, blog or other written materials. Your research should shed light on the decorator's process, style, creativity and personality. If you love what you see and read, schedule a meeting. If you don't, move on to the next decorator.
Ask the decorator how long she's been in the area. An established Denver interior decorator may have a network of contractors and stores she utilizes, which will let you know what type of work and quality to expect based on her past projects.
Discuss your style, lifestyle needs and wants with potential decorators. A decorator who is stuck on contemporary style won't deliver what you want if you're looking for something traditional. Be clear about how much control you are giving the decorator, such as if he will make the color and furniture decisions, or if you have more precise ideas and simply want him to manage the project. Don't be afraid to show examples of what you're envisioning through pictures from magazines. This ensures that you're communicating the right thing as "mountain retreat" can mean different things to different people (think of Aspen vs. the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee!).

When making your final decision on which Denver interior decorator to hire, never discount how comfortable you are with the decorator. If you aren't completely satisfied during your initial meeting, chances are you won't be happy with the final result.

4 New Years Eve Design Ideas

New Year's Eve. A time to say goodbye to this past year and welcome the new one. To remember the good times and look forward to the times to come. To appreciate what we did well and resolve on what we should do better.

And of course, it is a time to celebrate. To clink champagne classes, nibble on tasty treats, and mingle amidst some beautiful decorations. If you are hosting a New Year's Eve party this year, check out these four New Years Eve design ideas, guaranteed to make your party sparkle.

1. Create metallic centerpieces. Use metallic vases, candlesticks, crystal, and other shimmery accents to bring some glamour to your New Year's Eve table. Look for tablecloths with a soft metallic sheen, or fill a vase with simple gold and silver ornaments.

2. Start the countdown. Scatter a few clocks amongst your decorations for a touch of whimsy. Guests will appreciate the visual reference to the evening's climatic countdown. Look for simple clocks in soft metallic colors or basic neutrals.

3. Use champagne tones. Why not allow the feature beverage of the evening to inspire your decor? Champagne colored dishes, tablecloths, placements, or napkins are a great neutral accent to flashier decorations.

4. Use lots of glass and crystal. Group wine and champagne glasses onto trays and display them on a sideboard. Scatter small glass stones on the table, or fill a crystal vase with clear marbles. The glass adds shimmer and glamour without adding an overwhelming amount of color.

Denver Art Museum: Great Activity for Busy Professional Families

As an interior designer who works with many busy professional families in the Denver area, I know how important and precious that time they spend together is. With Christmas and the New Year upon us, and many children out of school, families across the Denver metro area are looking for fun activities to spend time together. It can be a challenge to find something that interests the entire family, but I think our local art museum does a tremendous job in accomplishing that task.

The Denver Art Museum has great programs and exhibits for everyone in the family. They do an especially wonderful job at catering to and engaging children. Even the DAM (yes, that is the acronym) website has a section for kids, complete with online games, information about camps and classes, and a guide for parents on the best parts of the museum for kids. Through January 1, 2012, the museum is offering winter activities like Chinese kite-making to accompany its current exhibits on Chinese modern art and silks. For children 5 and under, general admission to the museum is even free!

The museum has one of the most helpful websites I've seen in a long time. You can plan your day by seeing the restaurants that are nearby, can get more information on current and traveling exhibits, and can even purchase tickets.

A Glimpse into a Denver Designer's Christmas Decor

With Christmas right around the corner, everyone here at Decor and You Highlands Ranch is in a festive holiday spirit! To spread some of our Christmas cheer, we are sharing the contemporary holiday decor of our Denver interior designer, Jenifer Linder.

On the fireplace mantle, Jenifer mixed gold and silver to create a metallic contrast above the hanging stockings. The pillar candles have been placed on top of green moss, and the small vase on the left side of the mantle is holding - wait for it - peacock feathers! The feathers add a fun, unique and contemporary flare to this Christmas mantle.

Maintaining the same theme of green, metallics and creams, this kitchen tabletop decor features fresh florals with evergreen sprays and cream roses. The chandelier above the table is decorated with pearl strands and silver and cream bulbs. When you're decorating for Christmas, try to incorporate some contemporary ideas with your traditional decor - it'll add a new level of sophistication that will be sure to impress your holiday guests.

Jenifer's Christmas tree has feathers, white ribbon, white lights and cream silk florals tucked within it. In the same spirit as the kitchen chandelier above, pearl strands are also carried around the tree. Try to decorate your tree to compliment the decor of your room. In keeping with the color scheme of the rest of the holiday decor, the tree only has a touch of red mixed with metallics, greens, and creams.

One more little touch of whimsy and red makes this white birdcage the perfect finishing touch!

Year after year, thousands of busy professionals turn to interior designers. For many busy professionals, hiring an interior designer is a good investment. You can get all of the great design without a lot of the time consuming labor.

To maximize the benefit of this particular investment, you might want to consider our four tips for hiring an interior designer for busy professionals.

1. Look for designers who will both plan and shop. Hiring a decorator who would be willing to purchase furniture and accessories for you will save you the time of going to the store. To make this process most efficient, mark furniture or accessories that you like, consult with your decorator, and approve all choices beforehand.

2. On that note, make sure that you develop a clear vision. Mark photographs or items that you like, and ones that you definitely do not like. Here in Denver, we are fortunate to be surrounded by rich natural beauty. As a Denver interior design firm, we make every effort to incorporate that natural beauty into our rooms. Here are a few of our favorite ways to bring Colorado's outdoor beauty into indoor spaces.

Take advantage of local raw materials. Use local wood for your hardwood floors and paneling, or surround your fireplace with beautiful Colorado stone.
Incorporate local photography in your rooms. If you have some favorite shots of your own, frame them in a collection. Or, check out Denver's photography shops for beautiful artwork. If you are worried about your budget, coffee table books are a great way to incorporate local artwork at a lower price.
Explore western motifs. Animal motifs, distressed leather, and warm flannel, and rustic pattern are all classic elements of the western aesthetic. Incorporate these in your rooms in small doses-pillows, lamps, rugs, etc.
Don't overwhelm your windows. Go for simple window treatments that allow nature's beauty to be the main focus. Look for streamlined curtains in neutral colors, or retractable blinds in natural materials.
Treat your guests to local products. Instead of boring your guests with generic soaps, look for local bath products. Show off local flavor in your kitchen by displaying locally grown fruits and vegetables and other regional foods.
Use local greenery to decorate for the holidays. Denver pine boughs are fresh and fragrant and will add an appealing touch to any holiday display.
