Organizations are continuing to shift more of their workloads to the cloud as they digitally transform their operations to accelerate innovation, grow their markets and lower their IT costs. But moving to the cloud isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Businesses need to figure out which cloud platforms are ideally suited to their different applications and data. Once they migrate, they must also ensure the infrastructure they choose is meeting their business requirements at a reasonable cost.

Getting visibility into the cost and performance of cloud solutions, however, is difficult. That’s why we are excited to introduce Aptum’s Hybrid Cloud Manager, a platform that allows customers to assess, monitor, optimize, provision and govern private and hyperscale public cloud environments.

Powered by HyperGrid, Aptum Hybrid Cloud Manager, gives organizations a single dashboard that paints a complete picture of their Infrastructure as a Service or Platform as a Service environments. Hybrid Cloud Manager displays information in a format that’s simple for both IT and business decision makers to understand and includes controls that allow customers to optimize their cloud environments in real time.

Aptum Hybrid Cloud Manager relies on an extensive set of Application Program Interfaces to pull information from multiple clouds and display it in a way that allows organizations to easily understand and measure the performance of every cloud asset, wherever it happens to reside. We believe it addresses some of the biggest challenges businesses face in moving to the cloud, including workload migration, cost and performance optimization, compliance and DevOps automation.

For example, a customer might be having issues with cloud costs that are higher than expected. Aptum Hybrid Cloud Manager can track the customer’s cloud assets and make sure they’re being used efficiently. The platform can create a real-time view of ongoing costs and issue alerts if budget thresholds are exceeded. It can also identify under-utilized resources that could be deployed more effectively to help optimize existing infrastructure. Or a customer might need help making sure their compliance regulations are enforced in the cloud.

Aptum Hybrid Cloud Manager can enforce rules across multiple cloud environments. Case in point, an organization could decide to run certain applications only during business hours from Monday to Friday by creating a rule in the platform that shuts those applications down on weekends.

Other areas where Aptum Hybrid Cloud Manager can benefit customers include cloud migrations assessments, cloud planning and application insights, cloud security and governance and cloud configuration.

Today, data is core to organizational planning, creating new business insights and driving efficiencies and strategies. Aptum Hybrid Cloud Manager allows businesses to optimize their infrastructure so they can make the best use of their data assets.

If you’d like to learn more about Aptum Hybrid Cloud Manager and how it can help you in your cloud journey, visit https://aptum.com/services/cloud/hybrid-cloud-manager/.

Shifting gears from start-up mode to the scale-up phase is a major challenge for any organization. You have to monitor cash flows more closely, quickly hire people who can help you grow and carefully define roles for your team members. You also need to make sure your IT infrastructure can expand with your business – no easy feat when you have to account for electricity, cooling, rack space and IT staff with the skills and knowledge to manage a more complex technology environment.

Element AI, a global developer of applied artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions based in Montreal, Canada has experienced the shift from start-up to scale-up over the past three years. In its early days, the company had one permanent IT staff member, but needed to grow quickly. The hardware Element AI uses to develop its AI-based, decision-support products is very compute intensive with high power and cooling requirements.

The company knew it needed help to scale its IT infrastructure. It didn’t make economic sense for Element AI to build its own on-premises computing arrays, so it sought a data center partner with reliable technology, an excellent network and knowledgeable staff with deep technical expertise that could accommodate the company’s small, but growing IT team.

Ultimately Element AI decided to house its IT hardware with Aptum, based on our secure and flexible colocation services and network of carrier-neutral colocation facilities around the world, including Montreal. Our IT experts worked closely with the Element AI team to ensure its equipment was installed quickly to keep up with the infrastructure and computing demands from the firm’s rapid expansion.

Element AI has grown rapidly, almost tripling in size in just three years. More importantly, the company has been able to keep up with the demand generated by its applied research scientists for access to vital computing power, supported by our technology experts.

Key to our relationship with Element AI is our service and ability to scale. Our team enjoys coming up with new solutions to our customers’ challenges. In the case of Element AI, we streamlined the installation of new equipment by allowing the company to pre-populate new server racks and ship them directly to our data center, helping the company add new capacity efficiently.

A more in-depth case study of how we helped Element AI scale-up is here.

Whether you’re a growing company looking to expand your infrastructure quickly, or an established business looking for new options, our data centers offer flexibility in design, flexible choice of connectivity and the highest levels of security. Visit here to find out more about our Aptum data center offerings.

The first few months for a new brand can be definitive in terms of setting the tone for the months and years ahead. I discussed my approach from the perspective of the CEO of Aptum in a recent podcast, where I outlined my priorities of establishing goals, building a knowledgeable, experienced team and then creating a strategy to achieve those goals.

For Aptum, these first months have been especially important because whilst establishing a new brand, we have also been introducing a new operating model. It’s been a very exciting time and I’m thrilled that we not only have a great team in place, but we’ve also made incredible progress communicating our new brand values and executing on our goal of enabling organizations around the world to unlock the potential of their data as infrastructure.

We’ve assembled a group of experienced industry leaders focused on delivering value to our customers, including the hiring of our first Chief Revenue Officer, who is focussed on growing our global data center and managed services business.

We’re also committed to investing in our talent. For example, we recently brought our global team – from data center to network operations to sales – into Toronto for Aptum Grow, a two-day company-wide kick-off event and training. Aptum Grow is about learning and honing our expertise but it’s also about coming together as a united, global team.

Teamwork is also key to meeting the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals we have established for our company. Over the holiday season, Aptum teams around the world helped out by giving their time to groups providing food and gifts to local communities as part of Pay it Forward, our community volunteer program. Pay it Forward supports our five core values – Adapt, Inspire, Grow, Connect and Community – by giving employees time off to volunteer their services to charities and community organizations.

On the environmental front, we are committed to having a global process in place for tracking and responsibly disposing of all e-waste from our 15 sites and 19 office locations around the world by the end of our fiscal 2020. We are also investigating programs and initiatives that will offset our carbon footprint.

Making sure our customers get the best possible experience is a priority. We’re expanding our pre-sales engineering team, so we can assess organizations’ business needs and construct tailored solutions – including global connectivity, public and private cloud, as well as managed services – that meet each customer’s particular requirements. We are also enhancing our data center capabilities, including our recent expansion of our facilities in the Atlanta market.

On the business development side, we have reorganized our team from a regional to a global structure to give our customers the best possible service. Some of the team is now dedicated to finding new business, while others are focused on ensuring our existing customers get the services they need to truly leverage their data. Our largest enterprise accounts are receiving dedicated resources, overseen directly by a member of our executive team. Our next step will be to make the channel a more significant part of our business model.

As a newly independent company, we’ve transformed our operations, adopting digital tools that allow us to serve our customers’ needs more effectively. We’ve enhanced our product offerings by adding Managed Amazon Web Services to our existing portfolio of Managed Microsoft Azure Services, private and hybrid cloud services; expanded our Cloud Connect direct, secure cloud connection product; and continue to invest in our global MPLS network and data center portfolio.

These steps have made us nimbler, helping us focus on our core goal of ensuring organizations maximize the value of their data as infrastructure.

I sometimes get asked exactly what that term means. For me it means not stretching an organization’s existing infrastructure to try and come up with a solution to its data problems. Data is one of its most important assets. Infrastructure should be determined by how a company is capturing, managing and using its data to make intelligent business decisions.

Too often it’s the other way around. Companies are trying to come up with quick fixes to manage their growing data requirements. You can’t solve your data problems by just adding another server to a rack. Instead businesses should be identifying their data workflows and determining the optimal place for those workflows – whether it’s in the public cloud, a private cloud, in a co-location site, or on-premise.

We know organizations want to maximize the value of their data and need advice on how to build a solution suited to their needs. At Aptum, we’ve built a team that has the experience and expertise to help our customers construct agile, managed, secure, low latency, hybrid infrastructures, based around their data requirements. As cloud adoption grows, organizations’ hybrid cloud needs are becoming more sophisticated. They need expert advice and we have the technical expertise and a proven methodology to build solutions that allow companies to meet their specific business objectives. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in a few short months and we’re excited about the new services and capabilities we’ll be introducing to the market in the near future.

The holidays are when we come together and share time with family and friends, but it is also a time for us to reflect on how fortunate we are at Aptum. As part of our Pay It Forward program, the Aptum teams around the world have the opportunity to support their communities. During the recent holiday season, our global team participated in the 2019 Aptum Holiday Drive, organizing, volunteering and donating to great organizations that make an impact to so many during the holidays.

We’re proud of the incredible efforts from everyone at Aptum who participated. Below are some of the examples of the causes and organizations we recognized in 2019.

In Toronto, Canada, The West Mall and Horner locations collected food as well as monetary donations for the Daily Bread food bank. So many in the Toronto region struggle with food insecurity, the Daily Bread kitchen feeds up to 5,000 people per week. Adding to the giving, our Pullman location supported The Salvation Army this season which was chosen for its work with homeless, youth, and for families that can’t afford Christmas.

Vancouver, Canada, collected food, toys, clothing and supplies for a variety of charities this year such as the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, The DTES Women’s Resource Centre, the Christmas Wish Bureau, and Covenant House. There are a lot of teenagers in low income families in Vancouver, so the Aptum team gave two bicycles this year to provide essential transportation, self-reliance and freedom to those who need it most.

The Aptum team in Valbonne, France, banded together with their office building to collect toys, clothing, and food for SECOURS POPULAIRES FRANCAIS, a charity committed to fighting poverty and discrimination. They provide emergency shelter, food, clothing, and referrals to health care facilities. They also support equal access to housing, health, vacations, cultural, sports and leisure activities, and job placement services.

Our office in Southampton, U.K., supported SCRATCH to provide toys and gifts to disadvantaged children on Christmas Day. The team put together gift packages for children aged 0 to 18, carefully (and at times competitively!) tailoring the hampers to suit the family profile they had been given. In total, around 30 hampers were put together by the team to be delivered. Monies were also donated from the sale of office furniture and items that were no longer required, raising more than £6,000.

In London, U.K., the team supported three charities: The Winter Toy Appeal, providing to children in need via a network of social workers, schools, children’s centres and food banks; The Waterloo Food Bank, supporting the most vulnerable including parents who have to choose between rent and food; and the Whitechapel Mission, a results-oriented organization providing for a person’s immediate need of food, shelter, and medical care through to recovery with life-skills and job training programs.

Aptum’s San Antonio, U.S., office collected items for the San Antonio Food Bank. Their focus is on ensuring the people they serve have both food for today and the resources to be self-sufficient in the future. They also run farmers’ markets to offer a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, many being grown at the San Antonio Food Bank farms.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped to organize, volunteer, and donate to the 2019 Aptum Holiday Drive!

With the launch of our new brand and a number of exciting partnerships, 2019 has proven to be a momentous and exciting year for us at Aptum. We have made significant advancements in our network, data centers and business solutions, continuing to offer our customers IT solutions and data infrastructure that help them leverage technology to embark on new opportunities.

As we see 2019 draw to a close, I would like to take the time to share with you some of the predictions we see within the tech industry for the year ahead and look at where Aptum fits into this narrative.

A common theme we saw in the tech industry this year was experimentation. Businesses started to explore different technology solutions, such as AI, RPA, blockchain, 5G, and edge computing. We predict that 2020 will see the widespread implementation of the technologies that have proven to be the most effective. Notably, faster connection speeds and lower latency will precipitate a move away from centralized computing to edge computing.

5G

One of the biggest trends we have seen this year in the industry is the growth of 5G. It has been predicted by global analyst house Gartner, that 5G infrastructure revenue will reach $4.2 billion in 2020, an 89% increase from 2019. As it begins to roll out, a patchwork approach is likely to be taken, with existing sites being modified to accommodate the new technology, and new sites being built to fulfil the requirements of localised areas.

Enterprises will be able to reap the benefits of this infrastructural investment; higher speeds and lower latency facilitate a freer flow of data. Organisations will be able to deploy a new class of applications with better capabilities that will enable innovations such as augmented reality. Additionally, 5G will offer a more personalised experience to users. Applications that use AI will be able to process data quicker and produce a real time response. The implications this will have on automation, particularly within manufacturing, will be revolutionary.

Here at Aptum, we see adaptability as the most important characteristic of any tech strategy. Globally, companies need to embrace the opportunities that this technology could bring and how it can grow their business. Aptum can help wireless network operators improve capacity with our fiber footprint and vertical real estate access. And as Canada’s first neutral-host provider of 5G infrastructure, customers can leverage our existing high-performance connectivity through our 3,400 km metro network to complete transactions, communicate and innovate.

Security Services

As businesses across all industries face these increasing volumes of information, data becomes a crucial part of their infrastructure. In order to improve customer engagement and enable better decision making and risk evaluation, technology platforms and businesses alike must adapt and utilise the power of data. At Aptum, we help organisations unlock the potential of their data by providing infrastructure that enables customers to solve complex challenges and maximise the potential of their business.

As such, 2020 will see a rise in the number of security services, weak authentication systems and outdated hardware will need to be upgraded to better protect sensitive information. Legislation will help aid new systems of defence to help them become the new standard.

Within a strategy of adaptability, security is one of the most important factors. Aptum’s security solutions prepare for multiple scenarios of attack, by using threat detection and intrusion prevention software.

Edge computing

Faster processing of data from IoT and other devices will facilitate the move of compute locations to the edge. Although 2019 has seen the embrace of the data centre, for some businesses, closer proximity to their data is necessary. This gives applications that require real time computing power the ability to make decisions, based on findings, nearer to the source.

Edge computing provides a solution to issues surrounding scalability. AI has given systems the power to proceed on the data they receive where it is obtained, but the heightened capacity to make these decisions closer to the data source reduces the need for storage drastically.

Like any entity, data takes time to travel, and the larger the mass, the longer it takes to reach its destination. Hybrid solutions increase the speed of interaction between high volumes of data. Time is saved and decisions are made at a quicker pace. Edge computing will become increasingly popular in manufacturing particularly, as the desire for faster processing to increase productivity continues to be a common KPI. Aptum provides services aimed at helping hybrid cloud solutions run seamlessly.

What’s next?

As mobile devices dominate our data strategy, we should anticipate the dispersion of computing in 2020. Aptum provides a diverse range of cloud models that accommodate new innovations in obtaining, processing, managing, and accessing data. This truly is an enormous opportunity to embrace Data as Infrastructure.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of sitting down with digital content marketer Sergey Ross, to speak on his podcast ‘The Sergey Ross Show’. We spoke in-depth about both my personal and work life, the importance of curiosity and drive, and my role as CEO here at Aptum.

Here are some highlights from what we discussed on the show:

“You do your best, until you do better”

This is a quote I first heard from a prior boss almost 20 years ago. Since then I have carried it throughout life and tried to follow it as my mantra. As with any role within a company of high standing, there tends to be hurdles and complications, but what I deem to be one of the most important lessons in my role as CEO is to make fast yet stable decisions. This mindset and decision-making process has enabled me to make decisive actions, whilst also not compromising the integrity of the company. In order to do my best, I keep the opinion of others in the forefront of my mind. A company is built on teamwork so I feel you should never give a member of your team a task you wouldn’t want to do yourself and every relationship matters.

Helping our customers thrive

As a company, we’re proud of the relationships and trust we’ve built with our customers over the years. During our talk, Sergey asked me about our previous work with Shazam, and how our network infrastructure enabled them to rapidly scale to meet user demand. Back in the days when we mostly were using feature phones, we were content with a ten-second response. Whereas today, time is of the essence and customer expectations have significantly increased. Our network infrastructure helped enable Shazam to provide speedy content delivery to its clients. Shazam had the application and we enabled it to exist, thrive and scale to what it is today.

Staying balanced

In order to keep myself, and therefore the company, performing at peak level, I always put my family first and encourage a flexible working environment. I believe this allows me to tackle anything that’s thrown my way. The help from a supportive and equal team is imperative for a healthy work/life balance and as CEO, it’s my job to help those in my team flourish by encouraging them to carry the same mindset.

Personally, I don’t believe that being a person of influence has to be on a massive scale. For me, it is just as important to influence those around me, and help them to develop and grow. Just as my previous seniors and current mentors have shaped who I am today, it makes me proud to offer the same guidance to those around me. We continue to build upon our business success at Aptum with a shared goal in mind and this is how we influence the industry that we operate in today.

If you want to hear more of my discussion with Sergey, including my first few months as CEO of Aptum, why I’m not a fan of the “lean in concept” and my number one piece of advice to my 20-year-old self, you can access the full podcast here.

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion of leading service providers at the Hosting and Cloud Transformation Summit presented by 451 Research. It was great to share ideas with peers and hear different perspectives on the industry.

Of all the stats and information shared at the summit, one, in particular, stuck with me: 63 percent of companies felt their infrastructure could not scale to match future demands without significant changes (Source: 451 Research’s Voice of the Service Provider: Infrastructure Evolution 2019). It shows not only that organizations lack the processes and expertise to scale their applications to meet future demands, but also reveals the opportunity to take advantage of hyperscalers.

Are you ready for hyperscale?

Organizations are feeling the pressure of the increasing cost of technology and hyperscale computing represents not only a way to save money, but a way to meet future demand without significant investments in infrastructure. Companies that decide to begin using hyperscalers, need to start by looking inward and asking two (often difficult) questions.

Where are we today? Organizations should first take stock of their current IT environments to understand what will be required from hyperscalers. With the distributed nature of IT services, it’s beneficial to get a clear picture of a company’s entire IT footprint.

What do we want to accomplish? This question is typically easier to address but getting it right is just as important. Before beginning any hyperscale project, IT needs a clear goal of what they need to accomplish in order to set priorities and guide the solution.

Understanding where you are and what you want to accomplish is critical, but companies must also consider their capabilities and plan before they can make their vision a reality.

Consideration 1: Do we have the right security expertise?

Security is extremely important when migrating applications and workloads to the cloud, and it’s tempting to think hyperscalers come pre-configured to be as secure as possible.

Hyperscalers are extremely secure platforms but they require knowledge of their security tools and configurations in order to be set up correctly. If an environment is not configured properly, organizations risk leaving themselves susceptible to a breach.

Consideration 2: Are we over-engineering?

When building a hyperscale solution, the costs can mount quickly without the right expertise. The sheer size of the undertaking highlights the risk of developing a plan in-house. Over-engineering a solution that should operate more efficiently than previous legacy implementations is a real possibility in cases where teams have no previous experience. MSP partners can act as a guide for internal IT teams navigating their first hyperscale project.

Consideration 3: Where should we start?

Typically, the first place to start is a lower-risk area such as test and development, but it can also help to look at newer applications or solutions that do not require heavy database usage. Applications that make good candidates for initial hyperscale projects are built on new technology standards such as HTML5.

Going back to the stat I shared earlier, a majority of organizations feel their infrastructure cannot scale to meet future demand. Hyperscale computing can address those infrastructure needs, and answering the questions laid out here should provide a strong starting point. MSP partners like Aptum can take hyperscale projects even further, working with customers and provide the necessary expertise and developing solutions that bridge the gap from where an organization is today, to where it wants (or needs) to go.

When Darwin coined the phrase “survival of the fittest”, it did not mean the strongest or the most intelligent survives. Rather, it meant those most capable of adapting to change will ultimately succeed in the end.

The current economic, political and social environment we now operate in is exceptionally complex and unpredictable. To confront the rapidly evolving landscape, it’s become ever more important that businesses adapt in order to not only thrive but to survive. Disruption isn’t a new concept, but the speed, complexity and global nature of today’s disruption is at a scale we have yet to experience.

Over the past few decades, technological change has bought remarkable opportunities for innovative businesses, but it is also driving extinction to those less capable of change.

Keeping up with the pace of change is crucial to strengthening a business’ position in an increasingly competitive market. This calls for an increased focus on developing and establishing traits of agility, flexibility and adaptability into all levels of the workforce, spanning from the boardroom, through to a business’ critical IT infrastructure.

The only constant thing in business is change

With the right business capabilities in place, the unpredictability of the market can actually become a competitive advantage. In fact, strategic adaptability must be a top priority for business leaders globally. Whilst many organizations do a sufficient job planning how to operate when things work out as expected, it’s those that plan for flexibility in response to the unexpected that will succeed in the long term.

Adaptability requires involvement from every level of the organization. As businesses look to grow and expand, the people and processes within an organization are equally as important as the technologies driving this transformation. Business leaders need fresh perspectives and new ways of thinking to truly harness the power of adaptability, “it’s how we’ve always done it” will no longer cut it. It’s crucial to build a company culture where constant change is accepted and embraced. Only when this mindset is achieved can businesses truly begin to prepare for whatever is thrown their way.

Adaptability: maximizing business potential

The business benefits of adaptability are numerous, and we’ve seen first-hand how this equates to great business success. From my own experience, there are two main areas in which adaptability enables the greatest results:

Act on change – Those businesses that succeed are able to read and act on signals of change, they calculate how to experiment frequently, economically and in quick succession. This is not only with the products and services they offer to their customers, but also with business models, strategies and processes. In this competitive market, it’s important for businesses to leverage their signal-reading capabilities to improve operations and make quick, efficient decisions that will best impact the business and its customers today, and over the years to come.

Smart Partnering – Businesses that recognize that outsourcing solutions to an experienced provider allows them to have a greater focus on their business objectives, rather than being bogged down by IT processes and requirements. Going it alone in today’s unpredictable world can be tough for even the most resilient companies. Businesses that seek support and guidance from technology partners will be better informed and able to adapt more efficiently to the needs of the business and the changing environment without causing disruption to daily operations.

At Aptum, we are committed to helping our customers navigate during periods of uncertainty and change. We help businesses unlock the potential of their data by providing a robust infrastructure that enables customers to solve complex challenges and maximize the potential of their businesses. In an environment where the rules and signposts of success are constantly changing, the long-standing winners aren’t those who simply make it to the next round, but the ones who continually adapt to the ever-changing environment.

How to stay ahead in the competitive AdTech market

The AdTech market has seen an influx of new providers and a wave of consolidations. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for speed – the margin of success in securing desired ad placements is measured in milliseconds. AdTech companies continue to refine their technology and delivery capabilities to get an edge on their competitors.

As the industry gears up for the holiday season, companies need to ensure their infrastructure is as nimble as possible to deliver prime placements for their customers. Below are three factors AdTech companies should consider when looking for the ideal technology partner.

A global, low latency, fiber network

Network speed is a priority for any company competing in the AdTech market. A global fiber network that encompasses all key markets around the world is a must. AdTech firms should also select providers with in-house network resources that can be dedicated to improving network backbone performance.

Peering agreements with the major ad exchanges are also a key consideration to ensure as little network latency as possible. Geographic proximity lowers latency by a significant amount, so companies want to be able to house their equipment close to the hosting locations of the exchanges they work with.

A hybrid approach to infrastructure

Every company has different needs depending on factors such as geography, transaction volume, and application requirements. Industry partners should be agnostic when it comes to working with cloud providers and technologies, such as hosting, connectivity and data center, allowing partners to build an end-to-end solution that’s tailored to the specific needs of a client. AdTech companies must be able to analyze and execute quickly on big data workloads, so having an infrastructure partner who consistently integrates best in breed emerging technologies and services is critical.

An experienced AdTech team

It’s not hard to find a technology partner that’s knowledgeable about networking, data center technology, and hosting. It’s more difficult to find one that understands the industry and its specific needs. For example, the laws around personally identifiable information (PII) are changing around the world. Those changes impact what information AdTech companies can collect, how they’re able to retain that information, and actions they need to take if PII is compromised. A partner who stays current on the PII regulations in different countries, regions and states can help customers avoid unwittingly breaking the law.

Change is constant in the AdTech world. New players are emerging, network technology is evolving, and the regulations around PII are constantly in flux. It’s a lot to keep track of. But by seeking knowledgeable partners like Aptum, companies can focus on what they do best — growing revenues and delivering solid results for their customers.

The saying ‘data is the new oil’ first coined back in 2006, is now finally gaining ground among today’s mass media.

We are now operating in a data environment, where data is the life blood of modern society and has undoubtedly revolutionised the business landscape as we know it. Data infrastructure is as important as physical infrastructure in today’s business environment. Strong data infrastructure will increase interoperability and collaboration, efficiency and productivity. When you look at the bigger picture, many of the developments we see today are part of an overall trend in the market, both for consumers and businesses alike, and that is data explosion.

Unlocking IoT’s potential

During my career, and I’m sure many of yours as-well, we have witnessed the speed in which new solutions and advancements arise and completely revolutionise the industry we operate in. One of the biggest developments in recent months is the roll out of 5G networking, bringing with it the promise of faster speeds, lower latency and better flexibility – unlocking the true potential of IoT. This next phase of the network evolution will continue to pave the way for the industrialisation of wireless networks in ways we have yet to imagine.

By 2023, Ericsson estimates that there will be around 31.4 billion connected devices, almost double the 2017 figure of 17.5 billion – credit for which goes to 5G. As a result, businesses will have a lot more repositories to work with, and a lot more data to collect, store, analyse and turn into insights. In the coming months, the roll out of 5G and hence the increase of data – cloud-driven services will become ever more important to future success.

Data explosion

At Aptum, two of the biggest challenges our clients face is how they can consume large amounts of data at an optimal pace and how they are going to accommodate the data explosion without falling behind.

Here are three businesses Aptum has helped as the data explosion has taken hold.

A leading social network company for scientists which provides tools and applications for researchers to connect, collaborate share results and drive progress. ResearchGate is now connecting an astonishing 18 million people from around the world, all powered by our infrastructure and network.

A multinational technology company which works with businesses across the globe that have an abundance of data at their fingertips. Through our partnership, we provide the mission critical infrastructure services for the largest supercomputer cluster in Canada allowing it to analyse very large volumes of data in one of our ultra-secure colocation facilities.

A large AI company based in Canada, who are leveraging data to develop new business insights, drive new business outcomes and generate a greater understanding of customers through AI technology. The significant amount of data that this customer handles, and drives insight from, is reliant on having data storage that is secure, flexible, scalable and accessible at the touch of a finger all underpinned by our infrastructure.

A coherent data infrastructure should be a baseline condition for a healthy, progressive society, and a competitive global economy. At Aptum, our mission is about solving problems for our clients and helping them transform and supporting them as they reach a new level of growth.

Being acquired by Digital Colony and being part of a network of companies that are all enabling data-as-infrastructure, allows us to advise and support our clients as they navigate through business change and challenges that result from this explosion in data.

Mark Ganzi, CEO of Digital Bridge said: “Our combined vision will focus on the reality that ever-larger numbers of people will use ever more devices, and the true explosion of use, driven by interconnected devices, cloud computing, mobility, big data, the internet of things, and especially the 5G roll-out, is still to come.”

At Aptum, we provide the backbone infrastructure for our partners and customers to support and underpin their business and the rapidly evolving digital economy. Who knows what the technology landscape will look like in another decade’s time, but what’s for certain – we’re ready.
