My weekend dive plans started out to be an advanced course. That fell apart and left me looking for something to do. One of my students belongs to a private lake north of Peoria, about an hours drive for me. He gave me a call and I headed up early so we could get in during the no wake time. 10 am the ski boats are allowed to run.

So we go along the rock dam, but right away my dive buddy Dave noticed the lake had greened up from the previous weekend. We jump in hoping the rocks will hold some interesting sights for us. Right off I saw a bass and a school of baby bass. The mom kept darting at me trying to get me to leave. We moved a little deeper, to about 12 feet and the vis came up from about 3 or 4 feet to 5 or 6 feet. I kept drifting down the hill and into 25ft and hit the second thermocline. The vis jumpped to about 10 - 15 feet. Nothing down there to see but a silt bottom. I took my mask off and put my hood on and kept going, but then it hit me....Dave is in a shorty. I asked him if he was cold and he said he was, so we went to about 20 ft and continued down the wall. We made our turn and headed backin about 10 to 15 feet of water. I found an anchor that Dave decided he wanted.

We got back in the boat after the 30 minute dive and moved down into a cove to check it out. We did another 30 minute dive on the same tank and called it a day. The cove had a small pocket of fish but not enough to keep our interest long. So, back on the boat with 1300 lbs of air left and we went back to the dock. The ski boats were starting run and it was sure to get dicey and churned up.

Sunday I called another one of the shops instructors, Greg. We made plans to dive Canton. The reports on Canton for several weeks were poor, but that does not matter, it's good to dive in poor vis too. Makes trips and cleaner water that much better when you do get it.

Our first dive was a bit of a circus at first with 0 - 3 feet of vis at the surface. But once at 24 feet the vis opened up to 8 feet or so, but it was cold. Buoancy and anti silting techniques were a point of attention on these dives. We went to the north shore of the lake and headed west. There was not a lot to see at that depth except the interesting grographical features of the silty wall. A couple of the divers were wearing full face masks, so their dive times were shorter. Once we turned the dive and then headed back to the dock I still had 1800 lbs of air left.

Down to four divers now we stayed on the south shore and again headed west in the shallow depths around 12 feet. Vis was 3 or 4 feet, but we saw more fish that way. A lot of small bluegill or red ear. and two Northern, on about 28 inches long and another about 20 - 24 inches long.

So I got some low vis dives in and it turned out to be an ok weekend. Not great dives, but I was in the water and enjoyed the dives none the less.

Friday when I got home form my morning job I bought a six pack of ensure, got my gear together and made breakfast and two lunches, both for me, in preparation for a 4 Am departure for the Haigh Quarry. Before I go any further let me explain the ensure.
My Irish red ZZ Top bearded stick figure of a pirate buddy from Rhode Island who got me started on free diving utilizes ensure for two purposes. The first is to give him a bunch of calories before getting into the water because not only does he have no fat reserves to call on I am not even sure if he has muscles. The second reason for ensure is an incidental but fun one that we always got a laugh out of and have now made a game of. It goes like this; He explained how wet suits are chick magnets and that after walking past the sun bathers to the area where we dive there are always a couple of ladies who will take a walk to check out the macho divers, and they do. Then with our suits half pulled up to our waist we wait for just the right moment as the ladies walk by and then we both tip back an ensure and down it like we are slamming a beer. The impact is awesome because its seems to confuse the heck out of them, are they macho men or are they actually very young looking senior citizens and they just keeping walking. I tell you the look on some of their faces is too good to be true!
Any way I arrived at the Quarry after a 3 hour drive and drove up the long entrance3 way lined with flamingo crossing signs, the flamingos on the little street signs are donning mask and snorkels and yes their a little plastic flamingos. I pull into the parking lot which has a 16 foot giant plastic catfish and ten foot marlin at the entrance and head to the office. There is already a line of about 15 people waiting to pay and sign release forms. I print, initial multiple places and sign on the dotted line and give the lady behind the counter my 20 bucks. The lady flips the form over and sees that I circled the word snorkeling. She looks at me and says, "Snorkeling, you’re not diving?" I calmly reply, "Yes I am free diving". She looks up at me and with a questioning face and her head cocked the way confused dogs do she repeats the word free diving in a questioning voice, like she’s never heard the term before. To clarify the matter for her I simply state, "Snorkeling is what tourist do when they go on a cruise, free diving turns it into an X-sport. She still seemed confused as she put my wrist band on.
I headed back to my truck slammed two ensures in private as 95% of the 100 or so people there all had chick magnet suits of their own and I could see no way to make the ensure game work. I grabbed my gear and headed for one of the two covered docks. I sat down on the water level portion of the dock to finish putting on my fins and mask and was immediately inundated by 70 or so very large bluegills wanting food. I also say a few large mouth bass and a 2 foot catfish swim by. I jumped in ready to sink like a rock as I was using the same weight as I have while in the ocean. I was surprised and immediately cursed my friend Tim as I bobbed right back to the surface, because in an instant I knew I had been severely underweighted while ocean diving. I now firmly believe Tim kept me underweighted for my safety and his peace of mind. Three or four breaths later I took a cautious dive as again Tim use to make it sound as though I would sink uncontrollably in fresh water. I now know that is because he is all skin and bones and would have problems floating on ice. That first little dive was such a joy as it barely took any effort to get under and stay there.
Happy as a fish in water I headed off towards open water and one of the buoys that mark were sunken artifacts are. They have a boat, stone crusher and military vehicle along with an artifact park and multiple cement platforms so you can stand and not muck the place up.
I arrived at the sunken boat rested for a minute and headed down. I expected to reach the boat without any problem but then again I was never quite sure how deep Tim and I use to dive but I thought it was about 30 feet or so. Well I pinched my nose as soon as I felt the ears start to complain and began to try and equalize as I kept going down. I passed the halfway point and stopped to equalize before I continued down but I was only able to partially equalize and headed back up. I tried several more times but never seemed to be able to get past about 25 feet with the ears. After about 5 attempts to reach the boat I gave up on it. , and headed over to where the road went into the quarry.
The visibility was about 25 feet and soon saw the road. I was about 20 yards out and could see that there were a lot of bluegills nest on the old road bed. I spent a half hour or so diving down to watch them defend their little chunk of real estate and the large mouth that were patrolling the edge of the road where it quickly dropped to 40 or more feet. Between dives I would bob around and watch the 3 different classes that were standing in chest deep water of the road shallows. I tried multiple attempts to follow the edge of the road down but continued to encounter equalization issues. Eventually on one of the tries I felt or heard my frontal sinuses bubble and decided it was time to head for shore and a sandwich since my calves were starting to let me know they weren't use to working this way.
Once on shore I noticed I had been in the water for about 2 hours and was surprised it had been that long. Even though I could not go deep I found my hold time was a lot better then at the ocean because I actually was weighted properly. I was hopping I could blow the mucus out of my sinuses so I could equalize. I chatted with a couple of folks and one of them told me part of the problem was that I was going down head first. Another informed me that he knows a lot of diver who take a Sudafed prior to diving to prevent this problem.
An hour latter I was back in the water with my camera. I nabbed a few pictures of some fish and of divers. I even had one of the divers take the camera down to snap a few shots of the boat. I was in the water for another hour and a half and put the head first thing to the test. This experiment was accomplished by going to one of the buoys and using the rope I tried to pull my self down feet first but was not able to get very deep as it is a lot more inefficient then diving. I spent the next hour exploring neutral which was about 25 feet down. Not wanting to be thought of as an out of place cruise line snorkeler I would go to neutral and go for hold time and simple reveal in the peaceful weightlessness and the joy of proper weighting.
The ride to and from the dive felt a lot shorter then the 3 hours it actually took. The whole way home I was excited about my new understanding of weighting and eager to get to the Dive-palooza at Lake Weeza on the 23 to 26 of July and trying to figure out how to talk Tim the pirate to come out from RI for it.

Saturday I'm off to the Haigh Quarry billed as the Carabian of the mid west. Its located about 3 hours east of the Quadcities.
Depths reach 55 feet but thats not my goal, I'm more interested in playing around with weights and different depths. I am also going to try and take a self portrait with their paddle fish in the background.
The local dive shop has two different certification dives taking place at the quarry so I am also hoping to meet some local divers for future trips.
To those who aren't aware of it there is going to be a dive-palooza at Weeza Lake in Wisconsin on July 23 thru the 26 according to Whopper Head and the Wisconsin Spear Hunters. I asked for the time off lets see if I get it. This lake reads like its definetly worth a long trip.

Saturday June 20th was a great day to be diving. It had been raining pretty good the week leading up to it. I thought the visibility would be down for sure. Not even, the vis was 30' - 40'. I do not get up there often enough. It's a 2.5 hour drive for me. It was great to be able to see the contours of the bottom. There is so much character to it. I want to go up and explore it more, off the beaten path so to speak.

The reason I was there was to take students out for their open water dives. For NAUI we have to take them below 40' on one of the dives, this makes Haigh a much better choice than Strode. The temp below 35' drops off to about 50 degrees. so I did not want to keep the students down there too long. All four student did great on their dives and skills on the three dives we did. One student did not feel well after the first dive, so she sat out the second dive, but I was able to dive with her at the end of the day to get her caught up.

Two of the students went out Sunday to Strode with Greg to get finished up. The other two could not make Sunday, so they will go with another instructor on Tuesday to Strode and finish their Cert then.

I really enjoyed the diving and the day. Teaching (so far) has been a blast. I love sharing the underwater world with others. I may have a new freediver out of this group too! BONUS!

Suunto | Elementum

I took the watch to the lake, we had three training dives to do to finish NAUI open water dives. To see what others thought I let a couple of student try it as well.

First, the watch and everyday use. It's a very nice watch, typical strong Suunto construction on the case. Heavy and rugged. I was wondering how the crown would be since it is pretty good size. It has not been an interference at all. I do not accidentally press any buttons or anything. The black face version is easy for me to read and is a nice look. There is no timer or stopwatch on the watch, that would be a nice addition, especially for freediving.

Diving mode. It does it's job, it tracks the dive well. The dive mode kicks in at about 4ft I think. The book says 1.2m. The dive time runs in minutes and seconds, whick is nice for freediving, I would like to try some freedives with it. We were doing training dives, so we were up and down a lot doing skills, but the combined times of the tracked dives were equal to what my computer logged. In the water I was afraid the display would be hard to read. But when one of the students was wearing the watch I was about 5ft away and saw the watch display in about 10ft of vis. While blurry I could almost make out the numbers, they were plenty bright, and that was with no backlight or anything on. The watch matched depths as well, reading our 48ft dive matching my computer. Missing on the dive side is the temp in the log. It only records the time and depth. It would be nice to see the coldest temp recorded.

I never really questioned whether it would be accurate, it's a Suunto and they make great gear. I would like a couple of additional basic features to make it a little more useful. The face and strap I got are black, the strap is a nice soft rubber and very comfortable. The stainless version has the nice steel band and looks very professional in the photos that I have seen.

I do not know what this watch will be priced at when it hits the market. But if a person is looking for a nice watch and then a bottom timer to track their dives, this watch will handle it, be it scuba or freediving. Your not going to download any data from it, but you have instant access to your last 14 dives to see your progression.

The dive shop I work for had 4 NAUI students finishing up their open water dives this past weekend. I had worked with them as a Divemaster/Assistant Inst for their course in the pool. Now I'm an instructor and I get to finish do their final 3 open water dives.

Everything went smooth, no problems. The students were calm and handled the skills just fine. Mask flood and clear, Mask removal, hovering, Controlled Emergency Ascents, all of it, smooth. The third dive of the day was the students dive to plan and I was just along for the ride. I was happy with my first official teaching role.

On these dives I took along the new Suunto Elementum watch that I got. I also let some of the students use it on their dives. It worked out great as a bottom timer. I have some minor issues with it. It would be great if it had a stopwatch or a timer. It would help as a Safety while freediving, to know when to leave the surface. Also recording in the log, it does not store the temp.

Next week an all new open water scuba class. My first full class as an instructor. Team teaching it with an experienced instructor for the first class before being turned loose. I think Greg and I (the other new instructor) will be splitting the teaching duties of this course.

Memorial day weekend, time to dive! I have not been freediving in awhile. I don't do NEAR enough freediving. Wreckrunner recently bought a boat, so I was headed up for my first trips out on the S.S. I'm On A Boat (not it's real name, but...) I left Friday night to stay with Mr and Mrs Wreckrunner and leave early am to head out to Lake Michigan.

We got the boat in the water and then waited for this crazy polish guy to show up, Nostres. The lake was flat and the water was a cool 50 degrees and an awesome blue. Sixty feet of vis. Ten miles out and 130feet of water below us. Jeremy and I both thought the it felt like being in Martin's class, minus the salt in the water. Jeremy and I started out in our 3mm Oceaner suits. The water was just a touch to clod for them, but my dives were going well. We both then put on our 5mm suits.

The 5mm was warmer, but frustrating. I keep forgetting to put holes in the ears so I would get to 60 feet and my hood would squeeze, so I would deal with that and then miss an equalization, then I was done. I felt like I had a lot left in me. I was happy with the dives. I knew what I could do, I knew what the situation was, I just have to fix it.

Well, the next day is Lake Geneva and meeting up with Whopperhead. I decided to cannibalize a pair of my 5mm booties to extend the length of my wetsuit legs. Man did that help with warmth! No more ice water rushing into my booties!! AWESOME! Something I learned in the Air Force is paying off! I used to maintain pilots flight gear in the A.F. and we used the same glue, plus they have exposure suits too.

So we are out in a 100ft hole in Lake Geneva, ready to dive. I spent the night before fixing up my suit....except I DID NOT PUT HOLES IN THE HOOD! Same results on these dives. Sixty feet and I never managed to solve the skill of clearing the hood and the ears. To much going on for the amount of practice that I get.

So I figured out one this trip, I need to fix my suit and I need to get back to running and increase my cardio and get my resting heart rate back down where it belongs. I think I have the clearing of the ears timing down to wear I can keep my chest relaxed now.

Well as my previous blog entry touched on the fates of mice and men, Mother Nature once again provided a lesson in being humble. I ordered a new speargun and had it sent to my sisters house in Orlando so it would be there when I arrived. The plane landed under partially cloudy skies with a cool breeze blowing. I grabbed my carry on with my two masks and headed for baggage claim with an eagerness to my stride, and my chest puffed out as only a fearless adventurer does who likes to think he is control of the situation.
I hopped into my mother's care gave her a kiss and we headed to my sisters. I hopped that my eagerness to get to the water wouldn't be to obvious for fear that family members would get offended by my desire to taste the salt water. Saturday consisted of swimming in the pool with nieces, grilling out with relatives and catching up on all trivial things that are only important to family.
Sunday, Plans were to do an ecco-tour with my siste which was to consist of zip lines and rope brides in the canoppy of a Florida forest or as my inner child called it the Florida rain forest. Monday was going to be beach day just to get in the water and snorkel around and then Wednesday I would hook up with my father and was hopping to go out with a dive charter south of Tampa. i was going to get a room for the two of us and go out in the morning of Thursday and Friday. Saturday we were going to go fising out of Hommas (sp) with a co-worker of my father. So that was the plan; mix a long over due family visit and at least get in a few hours of hunting.
How it actually went down was, one of my neices ended up with her leg in a cast the week before I arrived and the weather man was predicitng a rainy weak, so thats Florida Hot sunny and a forty-five minute down pour in the late afternoon followed by the sun, no biggie, right? Well it started Sunday afternoon and did not stop except for forty-five minutes at a time hear and there. The weather men stopped measuring the rain in inches on Monday and started to speak in terms of a foot of rain and by the time the week was over some areas were looking at close to two feet and looking to the federal goverment for disater aide.
Saturday we went out into the gulf on a pontoon boat. There was a cobia tournement going on and our captain spun exciting tails of huge schools of angel fish being herded by cobia that just seemed to be everywhere. My father caught a couple of ramora (sp) which was cool as I never considered the possibility that you could catch them on hook and line. When the first one was pulled into the boat my immagination raced, where is the large shark that according to all the nature shows that I have seen must be around because that where the ramora live, rigghhtt? Well did not see the a big shark or run into the cobia that were everywhere last week, as a matter of fact nothing of keeping size.
We managed to get two hours of fishing in before we lost the race to our berth to a thunder storm. Totally fish talley for me was two illegially small grouper and one two foot shovel nose shark, both species were new and at least I get to check them off in my fish of the world book. Total cost per fish including lost wages aproximately 575 dollars apiece.
Now time to shift gears and attempt to go 3 hours north to Wisconsin to spear carp and hopefully to Haige quarry (sp) to explore my comfort levels as you can get to at least 50 feet. Perhaps if know I am comfortable at these depths it will provide greater oppertunity and options in the future.

Hey there guys and girls.

I'm a new comer to apnea but have already within my limited experience enjoyed a meditative state whilst I was under the influence of water :).
I'm not sure whether this is the same joy and relaxed state that other free-divers enjoy, but I'm looking to find out more about it and I would definately like to practice it more.
I don't have too much money at my disposal atm and because of that I am looking for a buddy in or around my area who potentially has more experience than I, who I could learn from and who I could also practice my free-diving with.
What I have to offer is an open mind, a willingness to love life and generally a friendly relaxed air about me.
Best wishes to you all

..this must be it, the paradise.
Or I am dead. Maybe both. If it wasn't for quiet whisper of autum wind and sound of slow falling yellow-brown maple leaves,
I would not believe this feeling is coming out of this world. Nothing to do with butterflies, the real ones or the ones you get in
your stomach after you meet someone who touches that fine string in your heart...I am thirty eight years old now and I can't fall in
love any more, my life was too rough for that sort of feeling.
But something more soothing, something assuring and a hope giving, inspiring...Powerfull.
I want to enjoy the moment, to soak it in my memory, my soul, and keep it there forever. So piecefull...
And then - lightning strike! She must not notice it, I must say something now or make a move. Otherwise it might become too dangerous
if she finds out what I feel. How did she do it, anyway? Did I drop my defences, lowered my guard and let her into my heart?
How can that be possible? I am a man, tough and strong, no woman can take controll of me. Last fifteen years I was dedicating every
moment to train myself in that one discipline, one and only: be untouchable.
And I am a master in that discipline; nothing to be proud of, yet the safest way to be. For me, anyway.
Now this situation...God. My heart is out of control now too,it is beating faster and faster.
"Let's take a walk down to the river" - I had to act. While walking, I feel like dozed, half drunk, disoriented. Stupid.
But she doesn't notice anything, or she plays it very well - she is talking loud about her sister's silly kids she visited yesterday
and how they...She wants kids! Confirmed now!!
No, I don't want to brake her heart, not her. But I am a man of principles, and that's the way it is. I will have to talk to her, tonight.
Am I talking to myself again? Am I getting weak?
My mother might be right, it might be time for me to settle and have family. I might be 'smart enough' now. Kids...That's it.
My time has come, and I have my true love. All waiting has paid off now. I smile for second time this week. She is late from work today.
A white paper edge is showing from under the dark maroon table cloth. Didn't notice it earlier, had a book on top of it.
It is an unsealed evnelope. Letter reads: "Okay, no need to explain. You can't settle and allow yourself to show your emotions.
I will send pick-up service tomorrow to get my stuff. Needless to say,I love you. But I can't help my self not to say - enjoy your misery!"

Since my last entry I have spent many hours searching out charters and other members in Florida for my diver. Each time I click send I keep the dream alive and I have received several offers to share expenses. I am becoming a little more optimistic that something will happen. I must also admit though that my attitude is shifting, because of the economy to a more what the heck just do it. You ask how does a bad economy cause me to adopt a what the heck attitude when such an attidude is so contradictory to the frugal philosophy that this scarey economy is forcing upon us average Joes. Well my reasoning goes like this. The fact that I don't get paid vacations means that between lost wages, airline tickets and minimum spending I will have at least 1800 dollars into the trip. If I step up from my pole spear to a gun, I have been using my buddies gun when diving in Westerly Rhode Island, a round trip ticket to get to Miami from Tampa pay for 2 nights lodging and share expenses I will be tacking another thousand dollars onto the trip. The reason I becoming more likely to just go for it is if an extra thousand dollars pushes me into financial ruin, I would have ended up there anyway, however at least I will have another good story to tell on my cardboard box front porch. So all you hundreds of Florida spearos who read my blog and eagerly look foward to the next instalment, I say send me your offers to share expenses and I promis to immortalize you in my post trip report.

Opening the source code of the project, and allowing so programmers from the freediving community to join, could help improving the system. For this purpose, there is now a project on the Google Code Project Hosting platform: aida - Google Code

Well hello all. Yes the plans of mice and men tend to unravel. The more detailed your plans the more glitches that tend to pop up their ugly head and this trip is no different. I was trying to combine a visit to the parents with a trip and its looking more and more like I wont be shooting fish. It is so depressing to get to Florida all the way from Iowa and not be able to hunt fish, especially when it appears it will be several years till I can get there again. Every one said go south young man go south. I kept going south and south and south and by the time all the pieces were in place it turns out that the nephew-in-law does not live in Key Largo but in Key West. I kept saying to myself, its only a couple hundred more and then a couple of hundred more and by the time it was all over I sat back and added up all the little hundreds more and realized I couldn't afford it both money and time wise to get all the way to Key West. :vangry It is so dishartening that I am not sure if I am even going to take my gear. :head It would not have been so bad but I don't get paid vacations because I work to part time jobs. So unless I can find someone in the Crystal River area give or take 75 miles or so I will chase guppies around with a minnow net in some creek some where. I guess I could throw a little olive oil on them and call them sardines or something.
