I visited the quaint NT beach & cafe at Wembury with the family, expecting to surf/body-board as we had last year. Was surprised to see things flat calm at the tide high, covering the beaches characteristic rock pools.

Spoke to some kayak danglers & some SCUBA divers who said vis. was OK, about 7m (7m!!!! :)). Even so, I took the trusty 75cm speargun rather than the 90. They'd seen Napoleon Wrasse & a mullet. As I was about to enter the water, the scubbies shouted to look on the left-side of the bay. So I checked there first -- no signs of life beyond the obligatory wrasse. Also, very shallow. Disappointing.

Crossed over the faultless sandy bay hoping I might see some flat fish but despite considerable eye-strain none could be discerned. I decided to aspetto on a small patch of weed in the sandy expanse - it was probably only 7ft deep. 6 little, tiny bass swam all around me. Far too small to shoot. I moved on, aspetto'd again. Again 6 little bass - probably the same ones - buzzed all around me. Onward to the right-side of the bay. A small-ish (1.5lb?) mullet buzzed me - perhaps smelling mullet on my gear - I took a shot but missed. A little later I saw something wiz by overhead out of the corner of my eye - a smallish bass or mullet, perhaps the same mullet.

I hunted the right-side but was generally underwhelmed by the relatively shallow, unfishy conditions. Although it seemed more promising that the other side of the bay. Another smallish mullet (perhaps the same one!) came in to investigate me as I slid into a groove between a large rock and a tall bed of string weed - he was too quick for me, and was gone before I could bring the speargun round.

I came into shore. We'd eaten fish the night before & still had left-overs in the fridge & 2 big mullet in the ice-box, so was relaxed about accepting a blank for the day.

Morals of the story:
1. Talk to danglers and scubbies but realise that they may have their own agenda's. Trust your own experience & judgement.
2. Please don't take crabs from Wembury (request from the NT ticket guy) :D

Due to poor weather & general family tiredness, we had a late start & didn't do much on our first day back in Devon. On the way back to the cottage (a different one this year, with a larger ice box :)) around 6pm in the evening, we decided to stop off at a beach. The water was so calm & clear. I wasn't planning to dive but was cajoled into it by the family. Boy am I glad they did.

I missed my first 3 shots, at good size mullet. Rusty? A little maybe. Then I remembered this was the spot where I had accuracy issues last year - similar conditions too: the tide was ripping through & my shots were at some distance. :hmm

I decided to aspetto in weed, as I hid & starting looking round I noticed a large mullet right in front of me - hiding in the weed just like me, and the mullet was starting to ease away. Quick, clean shot, in the back and out of the head.

I placed the rather large mullet (I didn't have a scale with me but ~4lb) on my waist stringer, hoping to attract other fish. It worked. A small group of large mullet swam around me as I lay in the weed. I resisted the first fish, which was near the limit of my range and happily (for me anyway) another even bigger one from the group swam towards me. Speared through the head & out the back . Slid that onto my waist stringer too, fat & deep (4++lb? My biggest so far. Might be as much as 5 or 6lb).

Although I'd only been out an hour and the spearing conditions were exceptionally fishy & promising, and I had "a fish magnet" round my waist it seemed, I decided to call it a night. I had enough fish to feed the family for several days, that was enough.

On the way in, I aspetto'd to break up the swim. First aspetto, a big mullet saw me first and shot off. On the second aspetto, I got a shot at a big mullet but missed. The family waved me in from shore, as I'd asked them too do when they were ready to leave. The third & final aspetto, I saw and speared another large mullet (4++lb, perhaps as much as 5 or 6lb) - speared through head & body.

Turns out my family waved me in because a couple of young men were acting odd at the end of the beach - "pedophile flashers" as they were described to me. Although giggling skinny dippers at the end of the beach seems more likely. Either way, they moved away when they saw me coming in (250lb, carrying a speargun, wearing 2 dive knives & 3 large mullet). And then rapidly left the beach on push-bikes as the family started telling me what was going on.

Morals of the story:

1. Beware of strange, naked men at the ends of beaches at dusk. If in doubt, get somebody to accompany you (the bigger & uglier the better :D). Take your speargun - there may be big mullet.

2. Waist-stringers are fish magnets.

3. Mullet have Terminator genes. Despite all 3 being shot in the head, and then dispatched (brained & the spine severed) with the excellent Omersub USA mini-laser:inlove spearo dagger, they continued to thrash. Lack of blood (when gills ripped, post dispatch) suggests to me lack of heart-beat, which makes me think this is post-death nerves. Perhaps the spine needs to be severed even further back (I severed them about half an inch behind the head/gills)?

No affordable hotels within an hours drive that I dare to go to.
Five hours of driving with 5 hours of diving. Hell yes! Five years ago but.

After banda island, I went to the island of Seram with my spearo buddy from France. We headed to the north of Sram island and we stayed in a small resort called ora beach resorts that has an amazing view and the atmosphere is very suitable for relaxing. This beautiful place also has good spot for snorkelling. Spearfishing spot.......dont ask for that...there are so many spots for spearfishing. Although it turned out the timing was not right for us because of the currents in the ocean was not good, but not a problem to get some fish for dinner. Natural conditions are spelled out very naturally makes this place very suitable for hunting. Maybe if come on the right time with the currents in the ocean conditions are good, there will likely once abundant fish. Month of September is an excellent time to hunt.
At some points, I have seen a lot of Spanish mackerel jump into the air, the atmosphere was very extraordinary and ultimately where we earn a few Spanish mackerel and red grouper for dinner. As would like to some other places that known with its good spot, we were forced to leave the excitement for a while.
The excitement is not stop until that point as there is a sea-cave that many locals tell us a lot of big groupers can be found. I have visited sea-cave but never go further since we did not bring any equipment to go deeper and further. I catch big red-snapper in front of the cave. Curious to know further but will try at the other time.
As I previously have shared, Maluku and the other part of the Eastern Indonesia have a great marine potency. Also, not many spearos know these sites and its potency, but I also hope that when many people start to know further, they will keep the genuine of the nature to make it away from distinction. Spearos should keep natural inhabitant to stay lasting so we will always able to enjoy and see its beauty. :martial
plan in September : willing to take another trip to Maluku for spearfishing. Best time where the yellow fin tuna appears on the surface. Hopefully this trip will be successful

l live in Bali and love to travel around to eastern Indonesia.

It attracted me to try to catch one or two; unfortunately I could not shoot or even reach the target because it was keep the distance. Therefore, I decided to focus more on hunting for Spanish mackerel. After successfully did a few shots, I went out to some other places, after obtaining some information from the locals, I headed straight to the location that was very satisfying. In the place I headed to, finally I found lot of blue fin, grouper, and red snapper. By the end of the day, after a long tiring wonderful day I found enough fish for the day, even more than l expected, therefore I decided to share some fish to the owner of motel where we stayed and the rest was cooked and served for my dinner.:friday

The weather in the mid west has been extremely hot and we had a long dry spell which seems to have caused early intense booms shutting down visibility to everything under a four hour drive. Lake Michigan looks like it may be the only viable dive location till things cool down.

Stress wore me out and now on an antibiotic which tells you to stay out of the sun. Also developed an allergy to something and have to take an over the counter antihistamine or the nose just constantly runs more than I thought was humanly possible.

Well trying to plan out a long weekend spearing trip continues to be elusive. Thought the battle with ex was over but man does it get complicated. First she wouldnt sign off on the Quit Claim Deed to get name off of house. Now its a battle to get her to sign a rental agreement. Why is she still living here you wonder? Well to start with dont hate her, just cant be married to her for oh so many reasons and I was going to let her stay till she declared bankruptcy due to huge credit card debt and then several days after divorce hearing comes up with a nerf football and a softball size masses. With what they suspect 80% are benign but looking at a 12 week recovery from surgery. I am trying to be compassionate to a fellow human being and take the high road, but let me tell you she is making it tough and have all but reached the end of my rope. No signed rental agreement by end of tomorrow and Lawyer comes in to play the day after. Some people just insist on not recognizing kindness and seem to have a need to make decisions so they can see themselves as the victim.

And then we cant forget about the 586 or so people who control this country and their flipping years of stupidity and selling out of the people. Pass the balance budget amendment and lets get the economy moving because I will be pissed if you idiots also throw a monkey wrench into my dreams!

I am thinking best case scenario is around first week of September till I can give lake Michigan a go and there will be chance of tasting salt water this year. But on the positive side, no more scary thoughts and hope starting to seep back into the soul as lifes possibilities begin to open up again. I am two years behind in my goal to bag a large ocean fish.

Stick with me people as I will be able to talk about diving and spearing again real soon.

Hi Everybody!

I just wanted to share a little slice of my success today with you. As some of you know I've been building my own spears for spearfishing, so I decided to give them one last try before the speargun that I ordered arrives. Well, I finally got my first fish with a homemade spear. I went to a new spot I hadn't yet visited and found plenty of good fish. After losing one, I figured out the trick to using my spear and wound up getting three fish total. The biggest is only about 14 inches, so there is still plenty of room for improvement!

One is a Brown rockfish and the other two are kelp greenlings. I cooked the small greenling and the rockfish for supper tonight and I don't think a fish has ever tasted so good.
Todays blog has little to do with diving but is being posted because it affects my ability to dive. Divorce now final and judges decision received by mail. Neither of us had a lawyer as there was not much there to contest except for alimony and attorneys probably wouldnt have altered the outcome as we both live check to check. I rate my effectiveness as my own attorney at a C+. Kept getting interrupted by people barging into the court and even with things written down failed to make a significant point and both of us forgot to enter things into evidence. As I expected there was no joy to the conclusion of this process for me, it just needed to be done.

I will not be able to go to the Wisconsin Spear Hunters Dive-a-palooza this year, which for the last two years has been my most anticipated summer event. This year was going to be especially exciting as we were going to have a freedive instructor put on a class.

Have to rework budget and see if I can find away to be able to afford a day trip or two latter in the year.

Bog entries may be a little thin for a while but they should pick up in the fall as I am now not afraid of cold water because of how well the rash guard works under my suit.

I'm getting a 110cm Picasso Scorpion railgun and hopefully it will get here soon. I can't wait to get it in the water.

I'm not abandoning my speargun projects and I still hope to get a fish with my homemade polespear at some point, but I need a proper gun.

Hopefully it survives being shipped over from Spain.

The lie was that in that post immediately preceding the How Dare the Fish post, I said it would be my last dive before my divorce court date, and well I just could not stay away from the water and went on one more local dive.

Also second clarification to that post is I mentioned that my deepest dive was 27 feet. I hope no one thought it was a boast as the deepest point I have found in this pond is around 35 feet.

How Dare Those Fish

 July 3, 2011
I lied last time as I did decide to go to my 7 to 8 acre pond and play with a fishing pole. Last time I attempted this was with the old fiberglass pole I was using and a dragless Zebco real was very sluggish when trying to set the hook due to the water resistance and the insufficient stiffness of the pole. This time I bought a short little stiff ice fishing jig pole and a Zebco with a drag total cost eleven dollars. I also made the decision to use minnows instead of artificial bait. I placed the minnows in a little metal meshed cricket container that was about 4 inches in diameter and 12 inches long, which worked nicely.

Water temps were in the mid to upper 70s and visibility had deteriorated to about 6 feet till you got down about 17 feet into the thermo. Once in the water I headed for the far corner of the pond where I knew a large bass lived, probably 8 to 10 pounds. On the way I found four new fish cribs I had not discovered before. They were not holding many fish that I saw except for one, which had a large crappie on it. I baited up my pole and started to bounce it around the pallets but I could not get it to bite nor could I get the bass to take the bait so I moved on after several minutes.

Once at my destination I immediately found my quarry but he was more skittish than the previous dives and after one glimpse disappeared never to be seen again. I dont even think the large minnows I had would have been big enough to entice him so I started trolling the edge of the weeds which brought out herds of fish last time. Today I could only seem to attract six inch bass and a few small schools of medium to small gills. The gills seemed to be more interested in my split shot then they were in the small minnows. They would occasionally nip at the minnow but never really hit it. After about two hours of no action I almost got a little angry and thought, How dare these fish not smack the hell out of my wounded minnows, dont they realize the lengths I went to catch them! This entire burst of anger lasted as long as it took that thought to run through my mind before my brain smiled with the old a bad day of fishing versus a good day at work modified to include fishing while diving. I was once again content as I was diving and fishing. What a unique and awesomely cool way not to catch fish!

In the end I caught one ten inch large mouth while dragging the minnow about eight feet behind me on a dive in about ten feet of water. Time in water three and half hours. Deepest dive twenty seven feet. Try to convert four guys into taking up spearing so I would have local partner at pond, no go however I may have a marine interested which I met last night.

NOTES TO SELF:
Artificial bait actually seems to attract more fish then minnows try worms next time.

Put real eyes on old pole and see if length of pole helps so not directly over fish, which will require better visibility.

Coordinate with major and minor fish feeding calendar.

Dont Leave camera at home!
