Straddling the Alabama-Florida line along the Gulf of Mexico, the Flora-Bama Lounge, Package and Oyster Bar has stood as a cultural crossroads since 1964.

Equal parts beach bar, music venue and local institution, Flora-Bama earned its name from its position on the state line between Orange Beach, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. Though its location is split by geography, the establishment has long unified locals and visitors under one roof with live music, cold drinks, and a storied history.

Originally opened as a small package store in the wake of Alabama’s decision to allow alcohol sales in Baldwin County, the business evolved over decades into a sprawling complex of indoor and outdoor bars, stages and beachfront decks. Its rustic appearance — layered with decades of graffiti, stickers and memorabilia — remains part of its charm.

The bar is perhaps best known for its role in Gulf Coast music culture. It regularly hosts regional acts and serves as one of the key venues for the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival, which draws artists from around the country.

Beyond music, the venue’s most visible tradition is the annual Interstate Mullet Toss. Participants hurl a dead mullet from the Florida side into Alabama, with proceeds from the event supporting local charities. It draws thousands to the beach each spring and has become a regional spectacle.

On Sunday mornings, the Flora-Bama hosts Worship on the Water, a non-denominational Christian service held on the beach stage behind the bar. Organized by Central Flora-Bama Church, the service draws hundreds each week — locals and tourists alike — many arriving in flip-flops, folding chairs in hand. With live music, scripture-based teaching, and a casual, come-as-you-are approach, it’s become a signature part of the bar’s identity and a reflection of its deeply rooted Gulf Coast community.

Flora-Bama has also weathered its share of challenges — including damage from multiple hurricanes and regulatory hurdles. Yet the business has consistently rebuilt and expanded, now including merchandise operations, a marina, and several adjacent businesses under the Flora-Bama brand.

Its reputation has grown well beyond the Gulf Coast. The bar has been referenced in country songs, visited by celebrities, and profiled in travel publications, earning a reputation as one of the most famous beach bars in America.

Despite the fame, the core experience remains: a flip-flop-friendly atmosphere, a schedule packed with live music, and a crowd that ranges from spring breakers to retirees. Flora-Bama is, above all else, a place that values community, tradition and Gulf Coast identity — one beer and one song at a time.

A Jacksonville boater got more beach time than they bargained for when their boat ended up stranded on the shores of Hanna Park.

🚨 What We Know: Officer Stillwell and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Marine Unit sprang into action when they discovered a boat had somehow managed to beach itself along the popular shoreline. The officers successfully returned the vessel to its natural habitat—the water—preventing what could have been a significant headache and expense for the owner.

🦸‍️ Who Made it Happen: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit demonstrated they handle more than just water-based patrols. These officers apparently train for everything from water rescues to impromptu boat relocations, proving their versatility extends from sea to shore.

💰 Why It Matters: A beached boat creates multiple problems—it poses safety hazards for beachgoers trying to enjoy the sand and can result in expensive recovery costs for the unfortunate owner. The quick response from law enforcement saved both public safety and private wallets.

🌊 What’s Next: With boating season heating up, especially in neighboring Clay County, authorities remind captains to pack essential safety equipment, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Most importantly, they stress proper boat securing techniques—unless you want your vessel to become the star of their next social media post.

🧴 Remember The Golden Rule: Help fellow boaters in distress, but the best assistance is prevention. Properly secure your vessel when docking or anchoring, and always keep safety equipment accessible for everyone on board.

What started as a casual beach exploration turned macabre when tourists discovered human skeletal remains on Edisto Island’s shoreline yesterday. The beachcombers initially thought they’d found fossils — until they realized they were holding someone’s actual remains.

🔍 What We Know: Tourists exploring Jeremy Cay near Legare Road made the grim discovery on May 23. They immediately called authorities after realizing what they’d found wasn’t a prehistoric souvenir but potentially someone’s long-lost relative. Deputies from Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and Edisto Beach Police Department secured the scene.

🏛️ Historical Context: The remains were found in an area once home to Edingsville Beach, a 19th-century settlement. Early evidence suggests these bones might belong to a long-forgotten burial site rather than anything from this century’s true crime podcasts.

🔬 Who’s On It: The Colleton County Coroner’s Office collected the remains and sent them to the Medical University of South Carolina. Forensic experts will now attempt to identify who this person was and how they ended up beneath the sand of one of South Carolina’s most picturesque beaches.

🤔 Why This Should Catch Your Attention: Edisto Island continues to reveal historical secrets that remind us of the deep, sometimes unsettling layers of history beneath our vacation destinations. Today’s beach paradise was yesterday’s community — and perhaps someone’s final resting place.

A Florida man’s quest for consumer protection took an unexpected turn when he asked police to verify if his illegal drugs were, in fact, the illegal drugs he thought he paid for.

🕵️ What We Know: A 49-year-old Hawthorne man, contacted the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday with what might be the year’s most ill-conceived complaint. The man claimed he suffered a “bad reaction” after smoking meth he purchased a week earlier. The disgruntled customer suspected he’d been sold the wrong illegal narcotic and wanted to “press charges” against his dealer.

🚔 Ask And You Shall Receive: Putnam County detectives, displaying what can only be described as remarkable customer service, invited the mistaken meth mogul to bring his purchase to the sheriff’s office for quality testing. In a stunning display of compliance, the man drove himself to the station and handed over a crystal-like substance wrapped in aluminum foil.

🧪 Mystery Solved: Field tests confirmed the purchase was indeed methamphetamine – exactly what the man intended to buy. Unfortunately for our bold hero, this consumer satisfaction guarantee came with a catch: immediate arrest for possession of methamphetamine.

😮 A Hotel Room With Bars: In what might be the most predictable plot twist since water was found to be wet, the newly minted prisoner was promptly walked to the Putnam County Jail and held on $5,000 bond. The sheriff’s office, apparently delighted by their successful sting operation, reminded the public that their detectives “are always ready to assist anyone who believes they were misled in their illegal drug purchase.”

🔮 What’s Next: The man now faces possession charges and has inadvertently created what might be the most effective anti-drug PSA of the year: Don’t ask police to test your illegal drugs. They will. And then they will arrest you.

👮 Remember: If you suspect someone sold you the wrong illegal substance, perhaps consider that all illegal substances are, by definition, illegal. The customer service department at your local sheriff’s office is happy to assist, but their return policy involves handcuffs.

A Russell Springs resident learned the hard way that cats aren’t chew toys after deputies nabbed the alleged ear-biting animal abuser in a bizarre domestic dispute.

🚨 What We Know: Deputies raced to Skyview Drive on May 10 after receiving a distress call about a domestic altercation with a feline victim. The 22-year-old man allegedly bit the cat’s ear off, claiming that the cat bit him first. Officers promptly arrested the peculiar perpetrator and charged him with Torture of a Dog or Cat.

🕵️ The Arrest: The sheriff’s office quickly collared the cat-chomping culprit and transported him to Pulaski County Detention Center without incident. The following day, deputies filed additional charges related to two more feline fatalities from April.

️ Why It Matters: Our furry friends can’t defend themselves against humans with bizarre appetites for ears. The accused now faces three counts of animal torture and sits behind bars with a $50,000 bond.

🐱 Remember The Golden Rule: If you witness animal abuse, report it immediately to local authorities. Our four-legged friends depend on humans to speak up when they can’t.

Over 100 creepy, Peeps-inspired figures called “Kreeps” are hidden throughout the city, turning the traditional egg hunt into a delightfully macabre adventure.

🧟 What’s Happening: The Kreeps Hunt is an alternative Easter egg hunt where participants search for sinister-looking marshmallow figures scattered across New Orleans. Unlike typical hunts, there are no clues—just pure, spontaneous fun as you stumble upon these ghoulish goodies.

🎭 Who Made it Happen: The event is organized by the Krewe of Krampus, the group behind the country’s largest Krampus parade. They’re experts at blending festive cheer with a touch of the macabre, and the Kreeps Hunt is no exception.

🎉 Why It Matters: The Kreeps Hunt exemplifies New Orleans’ unique cultural flair, offering a quirky alternative to traditional Easter celebrations. It’s a testament to the city’s love for distinctive and entertaining events that bring the community together in unexpected ways.

👀 Why This Should Catch Your Attention: If you’re looking for an Easter activity that’s a bit off the beaten path, the Kreeps Hunt offers a fun and eerie experience. It’s a chance to explore the city, enjoy some spooky surprises, and participate in a one-of-a-kind tradition.

Remember, there are no maps or hints, so stay alert and embrace the unexpected.

📅 What’s Next: The Kreeps Hunt runs through Easter Sunday. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, it’s a unique way to celebrate the holiday with a New Orleans twist.

🥚 Why It Matters: With grocery costs climbing and retirement feeling like a pipe dream for many, this isn’t just a lucky win—it’s a snapshot of real life meeting real humor, all wrapped in a carton of eggs.

🎰 What Happened: Hazel Morris was playing an online Kentucky Lottery game called Elephant King on March 15. She placed small bets. She hit big.

The jackpot? $281,651.

Her payout after taxes? $202,789.

📸 And the Eggs?: Hazel showed up for her photo holding a carton of eggs. She’d recently joked in a meme: “I wouldn’t tell anyone I won the lottery, but there will be signs.” The sign? A fridge full of overpriced eggs.

🌍 The Bigger View: The win doesn’t fix everything. But in a state where many scrape by and groceries feel like luxury items, it’s a rare flash of luck—and a reminder that humor still has a place in hard times.

In a revelation that will shock precisely zero cultural observers, Southern states have claimed their place at the rock bottom of America’s arts scene, according to new rankings released today.

🎭 What We Know: SmileHub published their “Best States for the Arts in 2025” report just in time for World Art Day on April 15. The rankings compared all 50 states using 16 metrics including the share of adults who create art, average salary of fine artists, and quality of graduate art programs.

🏆 The Winners and Losers: New York predictably took the top spot, followed by California and Washington. Meanwhile, the South dominated the bottom 10 with Mississippi earning the dubious honor of dead last at 50th place. Alabama (49th), West Virginia (48th), Arkansas (47th), Kentucky (46th), and South Carolina (42nd) all reinforcing the stereotype of the South as uncultured.

🤔 Why It Matters: With 5.2 million Americans employed in the arts, these rankings show which states actually value creative expression and which ones… well, don’t. New York boasts 14.8 times more art charities per capita than New Hampshire, while California has 15.1 times more artists per capita than Hawaii.

💰 Surprising Twist: Nevada, which ranked a dismal 43rd overall, somehow manages to pay its fine artists better than anyone else, with salaries twice as high as Hawaii’s when adjusted for cost of living. Apparently what happens in Vegas includes decent compensation for artists.

🎨 What’s Next: The complete rankings and detailed state-by-state breakdown can be found on SmileHub’s website. Southern states might want to campaign to have SEC football considered art.

Why Are The Arts Important?: For many in the South, the arts may seem removed from everyday life, but it’s important to recognize the impact they have on communities. Here’s why investing in the arts matters, especially in Southern states:

Cultural Heritage: The South is rich in cultural traditions—from music like blues and country to storytelling and visual arts. Supporting the arts means preserving and celebrating this unique heritage that defines Southern identity.

Economic Growth: Arts bring in tourists, create jobs, and stimulate local economies. Festivals, art shows, and performances can attract visitors, boosting businesses in the community. When artists thrive, so do local economies.

Community Building: Art has the power to bring people together. Whether it’s a local theater troupe or a community mural project, the arts foster connections and relationships among neighbors, building a sense of community pride and belonging.

Education and Development: Engaging with the arts enhances critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence. These skills are essential for success in today’s job market, and introducing more art programs in schools can nurture the next generation of innovators.

Quality of Life: Access to the arts enriches lives. It provides an outlet for expression and a means of coping with life’s challenges. By supporting the arts, Southern states can contribute to higher overall well-being among their residents.

By understanding these benefits, even the most skeptical can appreciate that the arts are not just a luxury; they are an important part of development, economic vitality, and cultural pride.
