There is a lot of possibility to do that: softbodies, cloths or even hand-keyframed bones, but our choice was particles, especially pflow box#2.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px;"&gt;Initially we model logo (from splines!).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;div class='p_embed p_image_embed'&gt;

&lt;li&gt;And here is a main trick: small proxy pieces was ported to pflow and used as glued objects. With all PhysX stuff, this allows us to drive every strand separate or even entire strands cluster.&lt;div class='p_embed p_image_embed'&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Tip: for smooth strands cluster movement, PhysX subframe factor must be set pretty high (in this example - 50)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/P11VilPK4R4?wmode=transparent" allowfullscreen frameborder="0" height="417" width="500"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Finally, to reduce particles intercollisions errors and to fix some free space between divided parts, entire particle system was "&lt;strong&gt;skinned&lt;/strong&gt;" on to hi-poly strands. This can be done by Particle Skinner or with 3dsmax standart Skin Wrap (if particles is baked to animated geometry).&lt;div class='p_embed p_image_embed'&gt;

&lt;p&gt;One day &lt;a href="http://3delicious.de/" title="Anselm v. Seherr - Tho&amp;szlig;" target="_blank"&gt;Anselm&lt;/a&gt; posted some info, that hyper-threading can slow down some 3dsmax operations, especially FumeFX. I don't believe him. Who should? :)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Let's make some bechmarks. Target machine:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Intel i7 920 2.67GHz @2.79GHZ (overlocked to 2.79)&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;12GB RAM&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;24GB Page File&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;3dsmax 2011 SP2 x64&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;VRay 2.10.01&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here is a scene from real production (still in progress). It contains many hi-poly objects, ~50 Vray Proxies,  ~200 textures (more than 2GB overall) as well as a lot of tree groups, populated with VrayScatter.&lt;div class='p_embed p_image_embed'&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Simulation:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HT OFF: 6h 13min&lt;br /&gt;HT ON: 4h 59min&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Hyper-threading gain: &lt;strong&gt;+24%&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Rendering:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HT OFF: 2h 57min&lt;br /&gt;HT ON: 2h 24min&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Hyper-threading gain: &lt;strong&gt;+22%&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Teoretically, this beast is a little different. Some FumeFX simulation parts isn't multithreaded, so those operations is done on single thread, BUT overall dividing isn't 1/8, but 1/4, so even when Hyper-threading is enabled calculation isn't left for one half-divided core. And practically, we see that HT helps even in that situation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small; color: #c07e00;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Conclusion:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Hyper-threading is in any ways good Intel Technology, I'm recommending enable it whatever you do.&lt;/p&gt;

	&lt;p&gt;The creators of FumeFX UI should  be locked into portable toilet and set on FIRE. Seriously, I can't understand why average user should do up to 4 separate simulations to get one rendered sequence. And this is for one grid only.&lt;p /&gt;Fortunately, &lt;a href="http://4rand.com/" title="John Random blog" target="_blank"&gt;John Random&lt;/a&gt; created super-duper-mega-awesome tool to ease our fate. This maxscript let you batch all FumeFX simulation modes, and for whatever grids you wish. I definitely recommend it:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class='p_embed p_image_embed'&gt;

 As you can see, there is nothing special, particles following Speed by Icon gizmo and fluids is generated from those particles (particle source).&lt;/p&gt;

 Sample A - is one standart FumeFX particle source, like in above sample.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Sample B - is one &lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;simple source&lt;/span&gt; wich contains only temperature and &lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;particle source&lt;/span&gt; with only fuel and little more velocity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;* for this example purposes, burn rate and ignition temp a little bit tweaked.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;7. Compositing&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I love to work with eyeon Fusion. But this task could be done in any compositing software - After Effects, Shake, Combustion or Nuke.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;------------------------------&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;"EVILNESS"&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/deko_lt/4006312244/"&gt;&lt;img class="posterous_download_image" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3536/4006312244_a6f7642d4d.jpg" border="0" height="500" width="374" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For this part, workflow was even simpler. In most shots there was pure FumeFX simulation with added PFlow on top by "FumeFX Birth" operator. Sure, here we need a lot of more particles just to get 'some' stable shape. Keep in mind that this can be taked further and FumeFX can be drived with particles too, so more advanced workflow will be:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;PFlow --&amp;gt; FumeFX (particle source) --&amp;gt; PFlow --&amp;gt; Krakatoa.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;And that's all :)&amp;nbsp;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And here is what we got at the end:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Of course, current hardware possibilities can render a lot more particles. 3 years ago, I can't had more than 6-12 millions on one character, and there was still a lot of troubles to polish grainy look in compositing. Now you can easily render 20-40 milions on one machine, with one pass. Also current Krakatoa versions have great tools to render FumeFX directly or save particles on disk, multiply them and have enormous options to modify final look. Don't waste a chance to not try it :)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="color: #999999;"&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px;"&gt;VRayPattern allows to periodically multiply geometry without additional memory consumption. As a sample you can use any tiled geometries (or those with unobtrusive joints). It also allows curving geometry on any surface, and works in a way similar to a displacement map. However, displacement maps can only use raster or vector maps of pattern to cover the surface of geometry, VRayPattern can use any of the original geometries for propagation.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Sometimes is necessary to drive 3ds max objects after particles. In this mini tutorial we will look into some interaction between PFlow and VrayLights.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Extending it further:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In Vol. Select you can choose not only gizmo, but different object to locate where to select vertices and WHERE next modifiers will work. Actually you can even create some particle setup, choose this in Mesher (from Compound Objects) and choose that Mesher in Vol. Select :)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It's doesn't matter which render you use for your main pass, but for little dust particles choose &lt;strong&gt;mental ray&lt;/strong&gt; and in Camera Lens Shaders pick&amp;nbsp;&lt;strong&gt;Arch: DOF/Bokeh &lt;/strong&gt;map.&amp;nbsp;In map parameters just match focus distance with your real shot.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Also you can render several dust shots with different focus distance to have more control in compositing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

	&lt;p&gt;Often when dealing with complex effects it's necessary to split those into smaller parts. Isn't only better to render specific elements separately but also working with particular portion is a straight way to get work done more quickly. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Script below let you quickly turn off/on Particle Flow systems:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This can be pretty usefull, when you want just quick turn off/on all particle flow systems. But what if you want manage not all PFlow systems at the time?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: medium;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Exceptions&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Problem was how to mark some PFlow system wich I don't wanna work with and use this everytime when turning off/on specifically branch. My solution was to use 3dsmax user defined Object Properties (Right click --&amp;gt; Object Properties --&amp;gt; User Defined). &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
