Personally, for me it is any of the swimming or diving events that I enjoy watching.

I'm not much for the track and field or biking events.

By IRA PORTER and ESTEBAN PARRA • The News Journal • July 7, 2008

Marguerite Bricker says her husband of 20 years didn't really want to commit suicide on the night of June 11.

But events happened quickly after Gary L. Bliss tried to cut his wrist.

She took the razor.

Police were called.

Bliss fired a pellet gun at officers.

The gun looked like a .45-caliber revolver.

Police fired back.

"My husband was threatened when the police arrived," she said. "I don't think anybody makes a conscious effort when they're in that kind of pain that they want police to kill them."

According to state police, Bliss' shooting death is one of several recent incidents involving Delaware residents who provoked officers. Some of these cases, experts say, could be examples of "suicide by cop," in which a person deliberately acts in a threatening way to trigger a lethal response.
In Delaware recently:

•Richard D. Redmond, 52, a former California Highway Patrol officer with a terminal illness, was shot outside his Milford home on June 7 after police were unable to subdue him. He fired several shots into an armored rescue vehicle, forcing police to shoot back.

•Desiree Hogan, 38, fled after shooting her 13-year-old son June 12 in Pike Creek. When police caught up with her in Midvale, she stood outside a home, put a gun to her head and asked police to shoot. She survived after a family member ran out and tackled her.

These cases, police departments across Delaware say, are not necessarily indicative of a spike in such incidents, but are situations they would rather avoid.

"We need these people who are feeling distraught to know that help is available," said Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh, a state police spokesman.

A 76-year-old man, who had just gotten out of his car and was making his way to Sunday Mass, was killed when a car ran him over near Newport.

"He was a very faithful parishioner," said Bill Kaper, a deacon at St. Matthew Catholic Church at 901 E. Newport Pike. "He will be missed."

Police expect to release the man's identity today. Although his wife was notified Sunday, police said there were some family members in the area that had not been notified.

Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh said that in Sunday's incident, the man parked his vehicle on the shoulder of Newport Pike eastbound, west of the intersection with Fallon Avenue, at about 11:25 a.m.

The man then started walking across the road-- he was not crossing in a crosswalk, Whitmarsh said.

Late last week, Anthony Gonzon traipsed through the blackberries and underbrush, searching for a red-headed woodpecker.
The birds are rare in Delaware and nest sites are hard to find. "It's not a very common bird at all," Gonzon said.

A bird in the right habitat would be good; a nest even better.

"I didn't find it," said Gonzon, who is leading the state's five-year effort to compile an atlas of Delaware's breeding birds.
What he did find was a snag of a tree with four holes in the bark.

He measured the holes, the height of the holes on the tree and their circumference and then he walked out of the wooded thicket to search for another breeding bird.

The Delaware Breeding Bird Atlas is an ambitious undertaking that relies heavily on Delaware's wide circle of amateur ornithologist volunteers.

Some believe the atlas will serve as a benchmark and will help track shifts in bird breeding due to factors like climate change.

I'm telling you all, real authentic Thai food is the best. I have to say after having the real stuff, I think I like it better than Italian food simply because there seems to be much much more variety and many more different flavors. Thais eat incredibly well. You all need to visit Thailand, it is incredibly cheap (airplane ticket is the only expensive thing), the people are incredibly friendly and polite, contains some of the best beaches of the world down south, and also has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

A Fourth of July fireworks shell misfired in a northern Iowa town, sending a fireball skidding down a street into a crowd of spectators and injuring 37 people, officials said Saturday.
Most of the people treated after the Friday night accident in Charles City suffered minor injuries, city fire department spokesman Eric Whipple said.
It appears there was a misfire involving 13 racks of firework tubes during the finale of the city-sponsored show, Assistant Fire Chief Dave Boehmer said Saturday.
Officials didn't yet know why the fireworks malfunctioned, Boehmer said. Inspectors from the state fire marshal's office in Des Moines visited Charles City on Saturday.
"It appears they went horizontally across the ground, some of them," Boehmer said of the fireworks.
Witnesses told the Charles City Press that a large fireball veered toward the crowd gathered downtown on lawn chairs and blankets.
"It was like a bunch of little fireworks just coming toward us," said spectator Emily Watson. "They started to explode. It was just like skating right across the street and then I saw them exploding right in the street here. ... In a split second, it started coming at me."
Brenda Schweiger said she feared for her life.
"My exact thought was, 'This is it, we're going to die,'" she said.
The city of about 7,800 people is 125 miles northeast of Des Moines, near the Minnesota state line.
Police in Riverside, Ohio, said a man lost part of his leg when fireworks went off inside his parked sport-utility vehicle, blowing the windows out.
A 6-year-old girl in Bayville, N.Y., suffered second-degree burns when fireworks landed in her lap, police said. Investigators said it wasn't immediately clear who launched the fireworks but said the child wasn't at a public pyrotechnics display.
A 3-year-old boy in Leominster, Mass., suffered serious burns after his father shot off fireworks that went awry, authorities said. The 37-year-old man will probably be charged with illegal possession of fireworks, police said.
In Port Huron, Mich., a 51-year-old man was critically injured when he was struck in face by a mortar-type firework, the St. Clair County sheriff's department said. Officers said the man was placing the firework in a tube when it ignited.
A pyrotechnics worker in Van Buren, Ark., was seriously injured after a rocket shot through her hand and split it open, authorities said.

I visited Utah early last year in order to visit with a former colleague recently retired from NASA. He introduced me to a dynamo of a woman by the name of Kaziah Hancock.

Even though I never had the chance to visit her ranch studio, she struck me as a person of monumental compassion and love.

I've thought about her from time to time since then, but I've thought of nothing else but her since another friend sent me this clip yesterday.

It shows that patriotism and support for our troops ALL OVER THE WORLD, not just in Iraq and Afghanistan, doesn't have to be worn on our lapels or the bumpers of our automobiles.

I hope you enjoy.
