by Jungle Jon (Posted Wed, 25 Nov 2009 14:12:47 GMT)
Hi Ron,

I had the same thing happened to me last summer when getting new tires… the day before a road trip. I’m assuming your stems are the same oddball 6mm size as mine.
I found replacements at 1010 tires: http://www.1010tires.com/accessories.asp?pid=VS502
Kal-tire was good enough to lend me some rims for my trip, and took them back along with changing out the tires to my old rims for free once the replacement valve stems arrived.

JJ

Read Main Topic

I have never been impressed with the car's he brings in..

but like everyone says you get what you pay for.. and he is the biggest JDM importer around..

If it wasnt for him i wouldnt have started importing myself.. I wanted a car but i wasnt impressed with his product..

anyways..

There was a ton of L400 at the dock on monday.. so they are just flooding in..

Read Main Topic

by FalcoColumbarius (Posted Wed, 25 Nov 2009 13:27:57 GMT)
As a painter: echmm, echmm... As a painter ~ did I mention that I'm a painter?... smiles.

Colour scanners are generally good for getting one into the colour neighbourhood of what you are trying to match, when you have fifteen colours to match that morning ~ but you still have to "tweak" (a technical painter's term) the said colour and do "dry-downs" to get it right. There are different variables one must contend with apart from the actual colour tone, such as the finish, i.e.; the difference between one paint company's idea of high gloss compared to another's. Any colour matcher will begin the colour conversation with a phrases like: "Do you have the code, man?" "Do you know who made the the original paint?" "What degree of high gloss is the paint?"

Another thing one must consider is how much time has the paint surface spent in the sun, during the vehicle's fifteen or seventeen years of previous service? Colour fades. The paint that I had made up (from the code with 6 or 7 ingredients) matched perfectly to the side panels, but not the front or tailgate. I also discovered, when I was having the side door repaired, that that was not the first time that repair was done. We discovered evidence of "bondo" in the finish of the surface being addressed. I would say that a good colour matcher would potentially make a good forensic expert.

If let's say there is damage done to the paint on the side door panel and it needs to be painted to match the rest of the van. The damage is occupying eight by four inches. First the area must be stripped & sanded down. Then it is painted with the base colour (assuming that the primer is fine). To keep the colour and finish consistent with the rest of that colour on the van ~ more that just the eight by four inch patch is addressed. As a matter of fact the new paint job may be extended and fanned out beyond the door, itself. This would fall under the "advanced paint techniques" category.

Then there is the clear coat. How many coats?; how much pearl in each coat to achieve the desired effect? The paint match I had done was for the rocker panels (when I get around to it) so I am not too concerned with the pearl.

If it is just a scratch then one can try using a syringe with a number three catheter to fill the scratch... depends how anal one is about their paint job.

Falco.

Read Main Topic

Thanks for the tips. I'm gaining more confidence about the practicality of owning one off these machines. I'm all for reputable dealers and am willing to pay for piece of mind that the vehicle isn't going to cost me thousand in repairs directly after purchase (been there done that!).

I live an hour from Peterborough, so there should be someone there who could work on diesels. What about a good VW mechanic, so you think they might be inclined to work on a diesel Mitsubishi? I know a private VW shop with a good rep.

All roads point towards a 1994 L400 Spacegear Super Exceed at this point. I hear the late model 1994s are the ones to get if one has a choice.

Is anyone familiar with these yet since they're new on the market in Canada this year?

Best,
greg

often VW shops are a really good place to get work done, I think most here though tend to be on the expensive side.

Read Main Topic

by Mbryant (Posted Tue, 24 Nov 2009 18:43:13 GMT)
So I was away for work and my Deli was parked in the staff parking lot. My co-workers got a hold of my keys (which are left at the office in case our vehicles need to be moved) and parked my van out near the road with a huge for sale sign in the window. The details under the sign read, "please see his co-workers for details, we like beer" On the inside of the sign was written, "Happy Birthday Old Guy". Best most creative birthday card I have ever gotten.

So if any of you hear of a White Delica for sale in Bracebridge don't get too excited.

Michael

Read Main Topic

by BCDelica (Posted Tue, 24 Nov 2009 18:30:29 GMT)
Try to think of positive input for you David, but can’t really come up with anything. Plenty of diesels with snorkels on this side of the pond, and every home built one faces to the rear. Many are made from exhaust pipe. Even the odd ARB unit, half of which has the intake faces rearward, which makes sense because monsoon season just ended.

A diesel benefits for increased and unrestricted airflow, buts does a big wheeled white brick generate enough pressure differential to create a ram air effect whilst cruising the roads of Vancouver or prowling the logging roads of southwestern BC (when I grow up I want to be good with adjectives like Falco). A forward facing intake is going to gather all the wetcoast precipitation it can, do your design ideas have a direction changeable intake?

Looking forward to pictures!

Read Main Topic

If I can then help others, GREAT!! But I already have my dream job of-sorts, plus I own a cafe in Florida so another business venture would be a stretch. What will you do with that ? If you grind it down, they will see that it was manipulated.

Original VIN plate on the firewall (underneath seat). What will you do with that ? Pop out the rivets and remove it ? If so, they will see that it was manipulated.

The color codes, diff ratios, engine size/type in the VIN between USA Mitsubishi Vanwagon and Japanese JDM Delica's are different. Give that some thought. They might.

If you or someone else is going to attempt this, just be aware of the criminal charges that potentially may come your way.

I am writing this to scare people from doing this.

Some unsuspecting Canadian Delica owner may end up doing a 'favor' for someone by driving their vehicle across the border, when in fact they could wind up in serious trouble with the law.

tonydca wrote:

I.e. - buy the skankiest/cheapest Mitsu VanWagon you can find in the US of A, drive it up over the border here to Soviet Canuckistan

What will you tell them driving back down ? Do you realize both coming up and going down, they snap a picture of the vehicle ? Well they do and they can check it on the spot. If they do, you're busted.

I don't want to see or hear of any fellow-Delica owners get in trouble over driving one down in the US or going out of their way to make it happen.

Read Main Topic

by Delicaman (Posted Mon, 23 Nov 2009 20:40:42 GMT)
On the subject of leaks, I also found the windshield washer jets leak at the base where it meets the seal that goes on the body. A bead of black silicone sealant works well. Also, the gutter on the driver side where it meets the winshield. I found a seam there where the original seam sealer was cracked and letting water in a small hole between the layers of body panel. You'll know its that spot if you get water dripping from your "Oh-crap" handle on the driver's door pillar.

Cheers,

Benn

Read Main Topic
