We have designers at  various points of readiness in NY, The west coast, Europe, Africa and the  Caribbean ! Servicing their local communities but accessing Global Markets!

Measuring  customers and Fit was an issue… many  simply prefer to “observe” the process and note the  measurements as they are taken…

The Emarketer report brief screamed Socializing the TV Experience   and  I suddenly realized why I  was Uncomfortable with the TV Goes Social conversation… I’m Not a “TV” person… I come to the topic more with an interest to  Televise” my  Social Experience!

According  to the brief
“Viewers are using Facebook and Twitter to comment about shows before, during and after they air”.!

That’s what wrong…  I  and many on my network do NOT watch TV…   in fact the  only  comments I  come across would be the occassional referrals

 during an awards show or major sporting event! Yes I’m sure they  watch television programs but i suspect  via the web interface (on demand) at their convenience like i Do!

“Major news and entertainment events are making social media integration a must. Television networks, grappling with the fragmentation of their audience, are experimenting with mobile apps, Twitter promotions and branded social networks in an effort to bring viewers back together. And measurement firms want to use social buzz as a metric to determine TV ad pricing.

Connected TVs Make the Third Screen Unnecessary

o what’s the third screen?

From the recent  TV  Goes Social Conference  I got the distinct impression that the second screen  mobile  devices… was absolutely  part of the experience! The Terminology is new, but, I am assuming that the third screen is the Laptop or PC device… truthfully what i want is a lighter version of my  17″ laptop or a notebook with a screen that makes things appear larger!
The one thing  I am  sure of is that EVERYONE has an opportunity to be part of this eveolution and decide it’s relevance to them! The question of

Andy Mitchell from Facebook  will join presenters at TV Goes Social!  I’ve started paying attention to new programing moves ! The Participatory aspect of The NEW TV Fascinates me as a creative, as a member of society as an entrepreneur! What’s Most interesting though is that we, as regular citizens have an opportunity to shape this by choosing to be active!

Don’t like the Programming on Television … Then create your own and share with friends family even others with similar interest and viewpoints… in your social networks- in real time as teh  show is aired! TV goes Social  Is More technical with presentations on some of teh aps and of course conversations on Monetization!

There is another aspect that  i’ve been seeing that of opportunities for muti-unit Real estate owners… who now can provide cable access as part of their pakage! Now whether that pans out to  advertising  commissions needs to be  seen! here a Brooklyn meeting about that!

A while back one of my cousins got married and I watched with my sister across town who was on skyoe with my Mother in Trinidad… and as we dished and interacted I realized that teh “revolution’ was much closer than we expected!

This is much more than what we can do with video the above video is 59 minutes long and I watched every minute of it! The level of Storytelling, content and rich context is unparalleled … of course this is a world renowed filmmaker… but withing my communities are several extremely talented individuals… what would change if they were empowered! I’m attending two Social TV Events this week! One I pulled together to get start th e traction within local creative communities!

This will be about the content and what we as viewers WANT to experience… it will also touch on the new approaches to creation, as well as! we’ve all said it I can do a Better job… now we really can!Last  summer we tuned on the camera and started exploring what it will take… we had designers in Trindad, Brooklyn  and Nigeria on the other end… our focus was NOt purely teh Tv  Screen  (but creating  content that can online or onto teh  TV Screen!   Tomorrow we’ll talk about  those experiences! But we had Three individuals one with 10 years commercial experience , one with as many if not  more in Public TV  production and Designers themselves!  we really learned a lot from each other!  What makes content engaging and what  do You want to share… do you want to leave that up to a TV  producer!

I found this video today from an award winning  filmmaker & collector  who lost 40 years of collected items when a fire destroyed his home! He had a lot digitally documented… but his take in the situation his decision to take the opportunity to create a “Legacy video” was Inspirational! how many of us take the time to document our family histories or teh stories of people around us!

There are thousands of video to select online . So how do we choose… usually by accident or recommendation… I found this Via TED and a small link in the comments… and watched all 59 minutes! This film shows letting  go and celebrating and documenting legacies! Brilliantly  told by  award winning Filmmaker David Hoffman!

This defies “experts who claim that  web  viewers have short attention spans… I watch all 59 minutes and plan to again! But it is the storytelling in the  words of ordinary people and the stories of ordinary people, that  I find fascinating!

I believe in the ordinary people , I love the ordinary people, I’m comfortable with the ordinary people

And the ordinary people when you give them a chance, a fair amount of times, they’re are extraordinary

Every advertiser and TV Executivel is searching for the formula on “How to engage and convert”! in this case they started s their pitch on point addressing “why we support a “brand’ they focused in on the “free” and then stopped… They somehow got it into their heads that the consumer should WORK for a free burger… such ARROGANCE!

In short  they lost it and the money they  spent… One week an entire channel…  I’ll let a consumer who actually tried this say it best!

First  up an entire channel devoted to a burger… is grossly  exhorbitant and NOT in the spirit of Social Media!  Actually my  opinion took into account  a “rant” from one viewer (see above) He’s right rather than control their price so that the consumer can afford to enjoy,  companies are arrogantly assuming they are dealing with the same consumer mentality… but  this consumer tells us clearly  WHY  burger king lost him as a consumer!

The  shortest  distance between two points is a straight  line!

You wanted consumers to buy the burger then cut out the expensive ad channels and ad executive and let the consumer become a star of your marketing efforts…  ask them to send in a proof of purchase and lets see how many  bite!

An opportunity for a 5 minute slot on cablevision… they’ll tell their friend! I keep saying that  ad  and programming  executives do not get it!  I do not  watch  you (except in the superbowl)  you do not relate to the consumer’s daily  lifestyle …  !hat I  Gossip…oh sorry, what we send viral feeds into need the entertainment value  or shock!

Get into their neighborhoods  with direct marketing campaigns in local media outlets!

Secondly … we’ll there is just so much  WRONG with this ad… but  it shows the power of the possible business models that can emerge of what will emerge…

Distribution  via cCablevision,-  this was Burger kings channel on  cable vision…

  • Packages to landlords with   multi-dwelling  units-I recently met a tech broker who sold Cablevison  that could be extended to
  • affiliate advertising  deals!

Citizen or Brand Advocates! This is the  consumer who flips channels while he tweets and speaks on the  phone with  his friend…

what’s in it for then

So what are they  missing  at Ibreakfast  ”Social TV”, I spoke on the  fact that what we enjoy about social media channels; what we like  is the view of “regular” folk”!  We wanted to  dish with our friends! I want to call my girl and tell her “Turn on your Tv”  Take a look  at this!

and what about those  social layers… twitter Facebook, You Tube, #hashtags!

the Plus… first in…  they got me to look at burgers for 10 minutes!  Thankfully Ii had already had breakfast… but  novelty will be the secret advantage for early adapters!

CBS What’s trending signal’s a new direction in  Programming! The key words  that guided me to  this was Participatory  TV… needless to say Ii expected to see some type of Participation elements., granted i was watching  the recorded version so I am not sure how  “Participatory” the live version  was!  Tthen again the point of extended the web  experience is flexibility  in time!there were social media links and the obligatory  You tube twitter Facebook… but not  sure how theuy related to teh last  episode…

I guess i’m  judging them harder because they came under CBS  I expected more!

This was billed as a news program and Frankly  I was disappointed… I was caught  between  buttoning them  up so they were more “Newsy” or loosening their wardrobe so they were more natural!  It was a cal between buying them a round of  beers or bringing in a green screen!  In short they are pioneers and have not yet  found their voice!  Halfway through  I almost reached fro  my Skype to share my screen  and dish  with  one of my  friends! i needed  something more… so hence this post!

This gave me a chance to critique “what I’d Do Better”! Not  a good sign!…

• Set The ladies looked like Alice  in wonderland… that furniture is TOO big! Makes them look like they are playing at  Reporting!
• Wardrobe…  See my note above… Something’s off… either loosen up  or Button  Down… Stop  pretending
• Lighting  Cool… open
• Host I was distracted by  the  guys hair… I cannot remember anything else (I shut the  tab down  so I could write on my  impressions…  pink shoes! The Lady with the tablet  (who’s feet did not reach the floor had hot pink  shoes!  Topic Gay ” Girl in Damascus” and”  Internet in a Suitcase”… they were actually interesting  stories butI was distracted!
• Ads… Very  unobtrusive… I like that!  Can’t  remember what they were … buit  I LIKED that!

TV stations are rushing to  fill and create programs for Social TV… They understand that if they are not  prepared for this shift They may loose huge market shares!

On the other hand I do NOT watch much traditional TV shows  and it  certainly not what  I get  social about!! When I watch TV  I want to be entertained… so  If I am delivering  content  on TV, It  has to  Entertain! Add the ability to check in, scan an offer  from a QR Code or  identify images with your mobile!  Not only can  you  tell others about  your product via social media they can now be the distribution channels themselves!

The possibilities are Endless ..

My  concern the creators that I want to see need to understand and have access to the  tools,

Social media is not  new it is  simply  digitized!! In that light I  look at  “old” practices within teh framework of new technology! I believe we are Not maximizing our tools… and distribution channels! A  friend once spoke to me of  a distribution model that has been  at teh back of my mind for a while…  messages were distributed to point men/women who each had a set  10 people to call… that ten would then call another ten! so 100 would get the message in a short time!  With technology the numbers are augmented and it’s not just the phone!  Collaborative distribution  allows for access to larger numbers…  It is a principle we are exploring with the design of Sony411 a magazine that positions itself as collaborative distribution platform!

Given that the  channels of distribution has changed  beyond email to with RSS, Kindle, E-book, pdf, web, Social media, twitter, Facebook! Tablets, mobile, Smartphone and the web…  does the  message or format  need to be changed to be effective!
