10 Mysterious Faces Partially Obscured By Enamel Mark Oliver Jeffers’ Dipped Painting Project

“Can something be described as beautiful if no one ever sees it?” was the question that sparked a series of performances in which Oliver Jeffers dipped his fully painted portraits into vats of enamel paint, a process that permanently obscures parts of each portrait’s features. The idea emerged quite by accident when, a year after an early dipping experiment, he compared his memory of a painting with a photograph of the original and found that the two did not match. This inconsistency in memory fascinated him, and he officially launched the project in 2012.

Oliver Jeffers will now present his ongoing dipped painting series in North America in his first focused show, and he plans to conclude the series by 2027, following a two-year wind-down period. The performance-art component of the project takes place in front of a select group of invitees, as oil portraits in antique frames are dipped into colourful paint. Only these guests see the artwork in its original state, and afterwards the image lives solely in their memories. There is no documentation, no video or photographs, of the undipped portraits. The only record of their original appearance is held in the recollections of the small group of witnesses who attend each private dipping performance.

Edit: Since everyone’s asking for more details. It’s held once a year, during the summer and yes, it is outside. The location is always the same. Whoever lasts the longest, wins, so there is no set end date. The winner gets a cash prize of 200€. Everyone can enter, foreigners included. There are no age brackets. You can eat, drink, nap and talk. I’m pretty sure bathroom breaks are allowed (I don’t think it would even be legal to not allow them all things considered).

Artist Creates Complex Pencil Sketches Referencing Science Fiction And Architectonics

The intricate nature of Margritt’s drawings makes one assume that a great deal of pre-planning goes into each sketch. Yet she maintains that she works without any preliminary studies, allowing her fine-tipped pencil to intuitively map out entire architectural worlds, one stroke at a time.

Margritt began drawing as a little girl and recalls spending much of her time at school obsessively sketching in pencil rather than paying attention in class. This early obsession ultimately paid off as her professional career as an artist took off, and within eight years, she created two complex visual universes.

Her most celebrated body of work, the Futur/amas series, is built around perspective, vanishing points, and intricate architectural compositions. “This universe is fueled by cultural references, particularly science fiction and architectonics,” she explained. “The influence of futuristic cinematic aesthetics is also very present. References to the work of Giger and the films Interstellar and The Fifth Element have nourished the construction of these labyrinthine works.”

Discussing her meticulously detailed drawings, Margritt said, “My creative process is based on intuitive exploration, repetition, and freedom. I am committed to a process of continuous creation, in which the work is never really finished and could always be expanded.” Maze-like piping motifs, nuanced shading, and slanting lines create an alluring sense of depth that invites viewers to imagine themselves inside the image. At the same time, the convoluted, interwoven patterns suggest how easy it would be to lose one’s way within its dystopian setting.

I never understood why Rosanna Arquette didn’t become a bigger star. She was everywhere in the 80’s and 90s, was beautiful, a great actress, and had the Arquette name on top of it all.

Then when the MeToo movement happened, she came forward about how Harvey Weinstein blacklisted her after she refused to comply with his disgusting ‘advances’. Then it all made sense. He ruined her reputation in Hollywood and it very much unfairly impacted her career. I’m glad to see her doing more acting these days but I don’t think she ever fully recovered from that.

Came here for this one. A clip of where she and Ellen Pompeo were doing a sort of discussion/interview thing crossed my feed again, and someone in the comments asked why they only hear horrible things about her when she seems super lovely in everything they’ve seen of her as a person. I commented back that because she didn’t let herself be pressured the way so many actresses were at the time by misogynistic power plays, the retaliation was to say she was difficult to work with and a nightmare, and the tabloids pushed it so hard that it turned into a smear campaign a lot of people still don’t know was totally fabricated. The next day, someone responded to the same person saying that she was known to be difficult to work with and a total diva, and I was just like “ahh, proving my point.” It’s seriously a shame.

Until Germanys most hated, yet still very relevant newspaper released a story: “Peter Lustig hates children!” Everybody was shocked. The biggest idol of kids actually hated them? How could that be?

It couldn’t. The newspaper twisted a quote of Lustig, who had said that he hated WORKING with kids because a tv set was the wrong place for a small child. Too many rules, too much going on, distracting and stressful atmosphere, etc.

It didn’t matter. The false narrative was there to stay. Even after his death many years later a lot of people asked “didn’t he hate kids?” I never forgave the Bild-newspaper for their cruel tactics.
