Celebrating her daughter Emma’s 5th birthday, photographer Jaime Moore went against the mainstream Disney princess’ idea and dressed Emma as 5 historic and inspirational women: Coco Chanel, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Helen Keller and Jane Goodall. Jaime felt that her daughter should learn about real women, who in one way or another had changed women’s lives for better: “I wanted her to know the value of these amazing women who had gone against everything so she can now have everything. So let’s set aside the Barbie Dolls and the Disney Princesses for just a moment, and let’s show our girls the REAL women they can be,” explained Jaime.

Jaime already has a good company among parents who get creative with their kids portraits – you probably remember Jason Lee and Dave Engledow, two of the world’s craziest dads.

Having had his first exhibition back in 1983, Madoz is a highly prolific and internationally acknowledged artist with a number of published albums. Hungry Planet: What People Eat Around the World

Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio set out to explore just how diverse the eating habits around the globe are, and published a photo album with their discoveries, called the Hungry Planet. The authors visited 30 families in 24 countries, each time photographing them at home, shopping at the market and surrounded by their weekly food purchases. Over 600 meals in countries from Chad to China reveal completely different stories: while some families don’t go without 6 gallons of Coca-Cola a week, others got to hunt down a seal to feed their kids. These are the reactions to a Forms of Nature chandelier, created by Thyra Hilden and Pio Diaz. When you turn it on, a white bunch of tangled roots and branches casts 360 degree shadows transforming your entire room look into a spooky forest. Could you imagine one hanging in your house?

Tippi of Africa: Girl Who Grew Up With Wild Animals

Tippi Degre had the kind of childhood that sounds more like an episode from the Mowgli than a real story: born in Africa to French wildlife photographer parents, the little girl spent her days playing with such animals as a five-ton elephant, a cheetah, lion cubs and many others.

“I don’t have friends here. Because I never see children. So the animals are my friends,” she once said.

Her parents, Sylvie Robert and Alain Degre, documented Tippi’s childhood in a book called Tippi of Africa. You can tell that the little girl felt completely at home while in the African wild!

Belgium-based photographer Manon Wethly is throwing her drinks into the air and capturing the beautiful shapes they create. Her Flying Stuff series, with thousands of followers on Instagram, was mostly shot with her iPhone, although now the photographer has moved on to experiment with “bigger guns too”.

”It is absolutely fascinating to see what kind of shape an object or liquid gets when it is ‘flying’. Clicking at exact the right second most often brings the most spectacular and surprising results,” she says. Make sure you hold on to your wine or coffee tight if Manon is around!

You may already know Patrik Svensson for his famous minimalist movie posters and book covers, but he has a lot more hidden in his ‘prince’s hat’ (his former pseudonym). Recently, this Sweden-based graphic designer got rid of this pseudonym, and shared his new portfolio site with us.

“I believe in two-way communication, and often try to involve the viewer in my design. Even if a picture is simple and flat I want there to be more to discover if you just take the time to study it a little closer,” says Patrik. He considers inspiration as “one of the sweetest and most mysterious things life has to offer” and seeks it by collecting memories: “Collect memories like a street cleaner collects garbage. Every now and then you’ll find an extra nice cigarette butt that you can keep in your pocket instead of throwing it in the plastic bag. Then one day when your hand reaches for that cigarette butt you’ll find that it has turned into a little diamond.”

American artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg brings art closer to science fiction with her Stranger Visions project: she recreates people’s faces from the DNA she finds on the objects thrown away on the streets. Even though Heather admits that the 3D portraits she develops from old chewing gums or cigarette butts may not be the spitting images of the person, they will definitely look like a “possible cousin.” Doesn’t that make you scared you might walk into your own face in a gallery one day?

Detroit-born photographer of Lithuanian origin, Mark Laita, explores the clashes between different social backgrounds, upbringings, schools and social classes in his book Born Equal. Published in 2010 after 8 years of work, Mark’s book presents diptychs of people who, even though born equal, have turned out completely differently in life. All pairings are made by contrasting the models, who have some logical link between them – for example, a bank robber and a policeman, a college graduate and a high school dropout, or a company president versus a janitor. A very powerful and striking project!
