Last year we’ve featured Faber-Castell’s Amazing Spiral Pen Drawings, and now they come back with another beautiful ad campaign.

To promote Faber-Castell’s top-of-the-line range of “Artist Color Pencils”, Ogilvy & Mather Singapore re-created well-known masterpieces such as Vincent Van Gogh’s “Terrace Cafe at Night” and Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” using thousands of color pencils as the medium itself.

The final piece looks so good, that I’d love to hang it on my wall!

Glass Floor Bathroom Over 15 Story Elevator Shaft

Guadalajara-based studio Hernandez Silva Arquitectos has recently designed the new interior of a penthouse situated on top of a 70′s Mexican colonial building in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. Its glass floor bathroom set atop an unused 15 story lift shaft has become an internet sensation. Some commenters said that “this bathroom will literally scare the s**t out of you.”^[1]

“A characteristic feature of the project is that a volume that was originally intended for a second elevator and was never installed becomes a powder room with a glass floor that looks down all the 15 levels, the PPDG penthouse is a great versatile modulated space, with great views all this with the concepts of transparency and the simplicity of materials.” ^[2]

Colorful Parking Canopy Made of 1,500 Recycled Plastic Bottles

Designer Garth Britzman used 1,500 old plastic bottles to create a colorful parking canopy in Lincoln, Nebraska. Named Pop Culture, this beautiful installation “sought to stimulate creative alternatives for recycling and reusing materials.”

The artist received financial support from Fulbright Canada and the University College of Architecture, and together with University of Nebraska students spent a total of 200 hours on the project.

I’m not sure if these two are related, but it reminded me of a cool DIY project which shows how to create cherry blossom stamps using recycled soda bottles.

Transparent House in Japan

If you think you have nothing to hide, try living in this transparent house located in Tokyo, Japan. Known as “House NA”, it offers plenty of daylight, however no privacy. The 914 square-foot transparent house was built by Sou Fujimoto Architects and is associated with the concept of living within a tree.

“The intriguing point of a tree is that these places are not hermetically isolated but are connected to one another in its unique relativity. To hear one’s voice from across and above, hopping over to another branch, a discussion taking place across branches by members from separate branches. These are some of the moments of richness encountered through such spatially dense living,” says Sou Fujimoto.

“The white steel-frame structure itself shares no resemblance to a tree. Yet the life lived and the moments experienced in this space is a contemporary adaptation of the richness once experienced by the ancient predecessors from the time when they inhabited trees,” says Sou Fujimoto.

Laser Cut Seaweed for Sushi Rolls

To help boost the weak sales of Japanese nori manufacturer that was affected by the 2011 tsunami, I&S BBDO, a Japanese ad agency, developed a series of intricately laser-cut seaweed. Each sheet from “design nori” series – Sakura (Cherry Blossoms), Mizutama (Water Drops), Asanoha (Hemp), Kikkou (Turtle Seashell), and Kumikkou (Tortoise Shell) – is based on Japanese history or symbology and represents happiness, good fortune, and longevity.

“Japanese people are eating less seaweed than before and I wanted to do something about the decline in demand, make some waves in a positive way. I wanted people to know how interesting and appealing seaweed is, not to mention delicious,” said the creator and Seaweed Shop owner Umino Hiroyuki (32).

Non Classical Portraits of Classical Musicians

If you were asked to create a portrait for a classical musician, what would the picture look like? I guess even if you did the job perfectly, the result would still look boring!

Denmark-based photographer and cellist Nikolaj Lund decided to reinvent the portraiture of classical musicians by taking the subjects out of their natural environment – the orchestra pit – and asking them do strange poses in places like streets, oceans and deserts. The results are beyond amazing!

Inspired by the colors of popular social media websites, Italy-based graphic designer Lumen Bigott created a unique line of Social Media shoes. The collection includes Facebook, Twitter, flickr, Google, dribbble and Wikipedia sneakers.

Unfortunately, these shoes are in concept stage, but Lumen said that they may see the light of day.

“You can create your own pair of Keds at http://www.kedscollective.com. This designs are just a concept but since I’ve have received a lot of good feedback and requests I’ll try to design them and post a link to the design so you can buy them directly from Keds,” wrote Lumen Biggot on his website 6 months ago.

German-based artist Cornelia Konrads creates incredible site specific installations using the materials naturally available to her at that particular location – be it branches, rocks or even snow.
