Pin Tab for Firefox helps you deal with tabs on Firefox better.

The latest version of Google Chrome introduced a very nice feature to handle tabs, it helps you pin a tab to a fixed position along with shrinking it to just its FavIcon. It gives you more space to handle more tabs along with reducing the tab clutter.

Now, Firefox has got the same capability with Pin Tab.

Install Pin Tab add-on from the official Firefox add-on site. As you can see, it’s an experimental add-on so install it at your own risk (basically none!).

Before using Pin Tab it might be worth giving the Pin Tab Options a visit. It lets you customize the shortcut key to use Pin Tab along with few other options.

You can either use the shortcut key or you can right-click on the tab and use the "Pin Tab" option.

Once installed and activated your pinned Firefox tabs will look like the above image. It looks like there is a bug with using Pin Tab on Mac OSX. The tabs seem to be not aligned properly (I hope the developer fix it soon). The above image is a sample from a Windows based Firefox install.

Overall, Pin Tab is a very helpful add-on to handle the many tabs we tend to keep open in Firefox.

Twitter List Widget can bring all Twitter updates from the list to your website.

When Twitter introduced Twitter Lists it was news everywhere on the web. Now with the many useful Twitter Lists created by the many enthusiastic Twitterers and Listorious the lists are becoming more and more useful to keep an eye on. Now Twitter has released a way to embed a Twitter list directly on to your website as a widget.

Here is how you can create and customize the Twitter Lists Widget,

Visit Twitter Lists Widget page. You should be able to see a blank widget template waiting for you to customize.

Widget Settings

Click on the “Settings” tab (if it wasn’t selected already). Start by entering the Twitter username to find the list. Here I’ve used the uber-famous Scobleizer who has some fantastic lists on various categories. Then choose the List Name for which you want to create the widget for. Give it a tile and a caption (the first and second line of the widget) and you are done with the main settings of your Twitter Lists Widget.

Widget Preferences

Click on the “Preferences” tab to set some of the widget preferences. You can set your preference to new results, to include scrollbar, load behavior, number of tweets to appear on the widget at a time along with either to show avatars, timestamps and hashtags. Choose the options that make more sense to you.

Widget Appearance

Move on to the “Appearance” tab to set some of the color preferences. Here you can set the shell background, shell text, tweet background, tweet text and link colors to your liking. I would recommend that you choose the colors to go nice with the color scheme of your website.

Widget Dimensions

Use the “Dimensions” tab to set the width and height of the widget. Or you can use the “auto width” feature and the widget will figure out the width and height and adjusts automatically.

Once everything is all done, click on the “Finish & Grab Code” button and grab the script code that you can then install on your website.

If you think a Twitter List update can add more value to your website visitors you can install Twitter Lists Widget on your website to keep on top of what’s happening on the list.

Gmail can remotely sign you out from all your signed in sessions.

Have you ever forgot to sign out of your Gmail account and realize it later? This would be a serious issue if you are using public computers. But Gmail has you covered. You can use Gmail’s capabilities to remotely sign-out from all your signed-in sessions.

On any Gmail page scroll down to the bottom of the page where you can see your account usage information in terms of size. Just below that you should be able to see your sign-in/sign-out activities as well. If you are signed into your Gmail account from multiple place you should be able to see a similar notification like above which tells you that the account is open in other locations as well. Click on the "Details" link to find out more information about the activities.

As you can see above, the dialog lists all concurrent sessions along with the last 5 activities. In between these 2 information you can find a button "Sign out all other sessions". You can use this button to sign out from all other signed-in sessions.

If you realize that you didn’t sign-out of your Gmail account you can sign-in again into your Gmail account and use the "Sign out all other sessions" button to sign-out from all the signed-in sessions. This would come in real handy when you realize that you forgot to sign out of your Gmail account from a public computer. Keep this information in mind. Who knows it might come in handy.

Use Bing theme for Windows 7 to get cool automatic desktop backgrounds from Bing.com.

On top of the different search experience that Bing.com provides, its eye-catching background images are another feature that attracts the most. How about bringing those nice Bing.com images to Windows 7 desktop backgrounds? It’s very simple.

Just download the “Bing.theme” file. You can save it anywhere, it doesn’t really matter.

Double-click on the Bing.theme file.

You’ll be prompted to download attachments or not. Bing theme for Windows 7 uses an RSS feed to get those nice desktop background images. What’s the point of using Bing theme without those background images? So, go ahead and click on the “Download Attachments” option.

Your Windows 7 theme will change to Bing theme (darker taskbar would be the first indication) and you’ll see the above screen with the “Bing” theme chosen. You should now be able to see those Bing images on your desktop background.

If you’d like to customize the images displayed or the frequency of changing the picture, right-click on the desktop and click on the “Personalize” menu option. On the above dialog you can see the feed URL from where Bing theme for Windows 7 gets those desktop backgrounds,. You can choose the pictures that you want to see in your desktop, position the picture (centered would be my choice) and the frequency with which the pictures should change.

When you right-click on your Windows 7 Desktop you might also be able to notice that there is a new “Next Desktop Background” option which would change the current desktop background picture to the next picture in the queue.

Bing Theme for Windows 7 is a nice alternative to some of the nicer themes that Windows 7 comes with. Especially if you like those Bing.com background images you’ll love the Bing.com theme for Windows 7.

Leverage Bit.ly’s URL shrinking capabilities within your Windows Live Writer.

Bit.ly is the official URL shortener for Twitter and it provides some nice goodies over its competing services like real-time performance tracking, access to complete history information etc.

TwitterLists2RSS can help you keep an eye on your favorite Twitter Lists using your favorite feed reader.

Just a couple of days back Twitter made its Lists feature available to all the users. Since then there are way too many Twitter Lists that’s been created that comes-in real handy to follow a bunch of Twitter users without the hassle of finding them individually.

As with any new Twitter feature Twitter Lists are also getting to a point where dealing with them is a becoming a hassle. TwitterLists2RSS is a free service that asks you for a Twitter Lists URL and then gives you an RSS address which you can subscribe to using any of your favorite feed readers.

Start by keying in your Twitter Lists URL at TwitterLists2RSS. If you don’t have a Twitter List handy you can find a list using a service like Listorious.

Grab the RSS feed’s URL and plug it into any of your favorite feed reader. You should now be able to get updates from your favorite Twitter Lists on your favorite feed reader.

Make the backspace key not take you back a page in Firefox.

Modern day browsers make the backspace key act as a key that can take you back a page in your browser. But with the heavy usage of that key already in action on many web forms and any other typing needs it would make more sense to disable the default behavior of the backspace key in your browser to act just like a backspace key when it comes to text editing.

Follow these simple instructions to disable the backspace key’s default behavior of taking you back a page in your browser.

Type "about:config" in Firefox.

Click on the "I’ll be careful, I promise" button to continue.

Type-in "browser.backspace_action" on the Filter box.

When the filtered entry show up double-click on the entry and change the value from 0 to 2.

Close out all the dialogs and from now on Firefox won’t treat the backspace key as a back button on your browser.

With Windows 7 we are seeing Microsoft adopting the social media more and more. How about a web site to see what people are saying about Windows 7 in the mainstream social media? Well, Microsoft has that answered as well with Windows Social! They even made the URL sound social with www.microsoft.com/windows/social

Currently you can find out what people are saying about Windows 7 on Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, YouTube and Flickr. Of course, the frequency of Twitter updates seem to blow you away with more frequent updates that kind of makes it hard to read those updates. You can use the little slider that you see on the top left to slow down the frequency of updates.

Windows Social is a nice idea but I’m not sure if they fitler our any negative "mainstream social media" press as I haven’t seen much (any) negative updates on the stream. Of course, Windows 7 looks like a superior product and there might be really less negative press possible but I’m sure there might be some which was missing on those updates. Coincidence? Not sure!

Windows 7 gets its first critical update to fix Internet Explorer 8 security issue.

Windows 7 is out on the public hands just for few days now and it has already got a critical update. The cumulative patch is mostly to fix a security issue with Internet Explorer 8 that shipped with Windows 7.

According to Microsoft,

This security update resolves three privately reported vulnerabilities and one publicly disclosed vulnerability in Internet Explorer. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. Firefox users who are running the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) plug-in and do not have it disabled should also apply this security update.

Camino browser release candidate packs some nice upgrades.

Mozilla Firefox’s light-weight cousin for Mac, Camino browser, got some nice upgrades with the 2.0 release candidate.

Here are some of the features that comes with the 2.0 release candidate version,

• Phishing and Malware Protection: Camino 2.0 Beta 4 includes phishing and malware protection based on Google Safe Browsing.
• Full Content Zoom: The scale increment used by full content zoom has been reduced to provide smoother zooming. There is also a new Zoom Text Only item in the View menu to toggle the zoom keyboard shortcuts between full content zoom and larger or smaller text.
• Software Update: When quitting for an automatic update, Camino will now save and restore pages that were open before quitting regardless of whether the “Load the pages that were open before quitting” preference is enabled.
• Updated Appearance: The tab bar, Bookmark Bar, and folder icons now better match the appearance of Mac OS X 10.5 and newer.

Since this is not a stable version it has its own known issues as well,

• Delete no longer functions as a keyboard shortcut for Back.
• Scroll bars will appear active at all times.
• If “Ask me before accepting each cookie” is checked, Camino will display a cookie dialog for each cookie request from a web page.
• Camino no longer supports Shockwave Player 10 and older; to display Shockwave content, install Shockwave Player 11 or newer.
• Version 2.2 of the Flip4Mac (F4M) plug-in for displaying Windows Media content causes major rendering issues in Camino. The Flip4Mac team has fixed this problem in version 2.2.1.11 of the plug-in.
• After visiting enough pages with Flash content while browsing, Camino may stop functioning correctly. Quitting and re-launching Camino will resolve the problem. This behavior is caused by a bug in the Flash plug-in and is fixed in version 10.0 of the plug-in.
• Some versions of the third-party add-on 1Password are not compatible with Camino. These versions can cause Camino to crash on launch, hang when importing bookmarks, and hang when pasting into the location bar. Make sure that you are running the latest version of 1Password, and if you continue to experience issues, disable 1Password’s integration with Camino and contact 1Password support.

Microsoft is not as famous as Google or Yahoo for their web apps. Of course, there are very few web apps from Microsoft that are useful but not as many or as famous as Google’s or Yahoo’s. Here are 5 free web apps from Microsoft that are known less to the public but are really useful indeed.

Live Mesh

These days we use many devices including your PC, Mac, Laptops, Mobile Phones etc. to get to the information we need. Often we find that these devices are not in-sync with each other and so we have to switch to a specific device to get to the information we need.

Live Mesh is a free service from Microsoft that allows you to sync, share and access your information across many devices. It can keep your files synchronized across your Windows or Mac based laptops, desktops and Windows Mobile based mobile phones.

Office Live

Office Live gives you free space of up to 5 GB for online storage that can be accessed from anywhere. It also allows you to share and collaborate on any Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. Office Live also gives you a free website and tools to build a quality website for free.

Windows Live Sync

Windows Live Sync does pretty much what Live Mesh does but it can only keep the files in sync between your computers. It can keep the files you identify synchronized between your Windows based or Mac based computers. Also, you can use Live Sync’s Shared Folders to share any file with your friends or coworkers.

Microsoft My Phone

My Phone service from Microsoft allows the information on your mobile phone be backed up to a space hosted and managed by Microsoft. In case you lose your phone or you upgrade to a different phone you can use the My Phone service to retrieve the information that you’ve backed up.

My Phone also allows you to share photos, taken on your phone, on Facebook, My Space, Flickr and Windows Live.

Silverlight Streaming

Silverlight Streaming is a free service provided by Microsoft so that Silverlight developers and designers can host up to 10 GB of Silverlight media files for free. Silverlight Streaming service also allows you to stream directly from that hosted space so you don’t have to worry about your own bandwidth. It’s a convenient service if you happen to need to host Silverlight media files.

There are many different type of internet connections available, dial-up, DSL, Cable Internet, Fiber Optic etc. All these type of internet connections have its own factors that could influence the reliability and speed of the connection. It would be a good idea to test your internet connection speed once in a while to see if you are getting the right speed that you deserve.

There are many services available on the web that can test your internet connection. Many of them are not reliable or accurate enough. SpeedTest.net is an exception. It is the best web-based internet connection speed checker available that’s even recommended by a major US telecommunications service provider.

SpeedTest.net determines the quality of your internet connection by running a download speed test, upload speed test and by doing a ping back and forth.

To start the test you need to pick a server that’s closest to you and hit the button to start the test.

Beleive me, when a major US telecommunications giant advices you to use these services instead of their own versions there has got to be something that’s better than the other services out there.

Given the age of Windows XP I guess most of us get tired of looking at the age-old user interface. The good part is that Windows XP allows you to update the user interface look and feel without much hassle.

Before we get to see the 15 best looking Windows XP themes let’s just make sure we can apply these themes to our Windows XP machines.

Since these themes are developed by third-party developers Windows XP will not directly apply and use these themes. You have to do a workaround to get Windows XP tuned-up to make use of third-party themes.

Start by downloading UxTheme Patcher and install it. If you use Windows XP SP3 then you might want to download UxTender instead. During installation Windows XP might complain about attempting to replace system files and might ask you to insert Windows XP installation media. Just ignore those warnings and move forward by clicking on the "Continue" button. That will make your Windows XP system ready to accept third-party themes.

Now you can download any of the free themes below and give it a try. After you download the theme pack, unzip it and look for a file that ends with .msstyles. Copy the folder containing that file into C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\

Once installed you can either double-click the .msstyles file and start using the theme or you should click on your desktop and choose Properties and in the dialog that pops up go into the Appearance tab. Pick the theme that you like and start seeing Windows XP from a different perspective.

Enable and make use of these 30 useful Gmail Labs features for a better Gmail experience.

I don’t know about you but I love Gmail more than any other email clients that I’ve tried, even when compared to any other desktop email clients. The one feature that makes me come back to use the Gmail web interface more and more is the Gmail Labs feature.

Gmail Labs is an experimental feature release by the Gmail team where they declare that these features are not tested thoroughly but would give you a better experience. Then you, as an informed user, can make the decision to give the feature a try or not.

Some of the Gmail Labs features are really useful while others are nice-to-have kind of. You might even find those nice-to-have features are really nice to have.

Here are some 30 of the most useful Gmail Labs features that can help you enjoy using Gmail’s web interface. Keep in mind that these are the feature-set as of this writing. As with the nature of Gmail Labs new features would get introduced every now and then but these are some of the features that you might find it useful to start with.

Offline Gmail

You can use Gmail while not connected to the internet if you enable Offline Gmail option. It uses Google Gears to keep an offline copy of your email inboxes so you can use those even when not connected to the internet. You won’t be able to physically send emails while offline but you can still send emails as usual and your emails will be delivered once you get an active internet connection. Google Docs Preview in Gmail

When you receive any link to a Google Doc in your email this feature will allow you to preview the documents before really opening or downloading. Consider this as kind of a "quick preview".

Message Translation

If you normally receive emails in non-English languages and would like to view those emails in English or any other language of your choice you can use the "Message Translation" feature to let Gmail translate those emails to the language of your choice. Quick Links

Allows you to keep a repository of links that you use quite often, be it any important email messages or any frequent searches, you can dump those links in here for quick access. Quick Links will add a little box to the left column on your Gmail page with all those quick links.

Gmail Superstars

On of the advantage of using Gmail’s web interface is that it allows you to star your emails for quick reference. The default star capability of Gmail is very limited in nature. If you like to star your emails in many different ways then the "Superstars" Gmail Labs feature gives you ample choices to comfortable star your emails. Custom Keyboard Shortcuts

Gmail lets you get a lot done quickly if you use Gmail keyboard shortcuts. It might take a bit of an effort to learn these shortcuts but once you start using it you can get a lot done quickly with those shortcuts. If the default shortcuts are not enough for you then you can use "Custom keyboard shortcuts" feature to customize the keyboard shortcuts to your convenience.

Signature Tweaks

The default signature capability of Gmail is pretty basic in nature and can’t be tweaked much. With "Signature Tweaks" you can customize the behavior of your email signature a little bit.

Sender Time Zone

If you receive emails from friends across time zones and ever wonder if it would be an appropriate time to expect a response, "Sender Time Zone" is for you. It displays the sender’s time along with the time it’s there at the sender’s place. You make the judgement.

Right-side Chat

If your Google Chat contacts list is pretty lengthy you might want to consider moving the chat box to the right side of your Gmail window so it can pan down the page as much as the Gmail page can pan down. This would give you more room to see your Gmail Chat contacts.

Advanced IMAP Controls

The default IMAP control that Gmail supports is simple and straight-forward. It syncs all of your Gmail labels and expunges messages automatically. Get fine control of your IMAP settings with "Advanced IMAP Controls" Gmail Labs feature.

Default Reply to All

Major complaint about modern day email is that people quite often accidentally hit the "Reply" button instead of the "Reply to All" and leave out important people from the conversation. If you happen to reply to all of your contacts for the most part you can use "Default Reply to all" feature to make "Reply to All" button as the default button intead of the "Reply" button.

Quote Selected Text

If you don’t want to include that lengthy email on your response but would rather quote a portion of the email instead then "Quote Selected Text" can come to your rescue. Just highlight the quote you want to include in your response when you click on the "Reply" link and you’ll then only include your selected text in your response.

Forgotten Attachment Detector

This feature is a bit intelligent in the sense that if you mention any attachments in your email message and forget to attach those files this feature can remind you of attaching your attachments. Pretty neat!

Vacation Time!

Similar to Microsoft Outlook you can set automatic vacation responders in Gmail. With "Vacation Time" you can specify the start and end dates of your vacation and Gmail will take care of responding to your emails with a custom vacation responder email that you can customize with your own message. Custom Label Colors

I use a lot of labels to organize my emails in Gmail. With the default behavior Gmail only gives you limited choice of label colors which I normally run out pretty quick. With "Custom Label Colors" you can specify your own custom colors for labels and that would give you enough choice when it comes to label colors.

Mark as Read Button

When you receive a lot of emails on your Gmail inbox it would be a nightmare to sort through each one of them and marking it as read by clicking on the "More Actions" dropdown and then marking it as read. Instead "Mark as Read Button" feature adds a convenient "Mark as read" button on to the toolbar itself for your convenience.

Multiple Inboxes

Often clicking on the "Starred" link or on any of the labels to get to see your important email messages? Not any more, with "Multiple Inboxes" feature you can add extra list of emails down below each other on to your Gmail home page so you can see them all in one place. Unbelivably useful!

Create a Document

With "Create a Document" feature you can convert any emails into a Google Document. You’ll love it if you use Google Docs a lot.

Send and Archive

As the name says this feauture adds a "Send & Receive" button to your "Compose" email page with which you can respond to an email and archive it at the same time.

Undo Send

Ever hit the "Send" button to realize that you should have read the message one more time? No problem, "Undo Send" feature gives you a chance to undo the send action. Keep in mind that you can only undo your send action for couple of seconds so you should the quick enough to realize your mistake. Read more about undoing a sent Gmail message.

Title Tweaks

Would like to know your unread Gmail count even when the window is minimized? "Title Tweaks" displays the unread email count first so it would be visible on your Task Bar. This applies mostly to Windows and Linux users.

Don’t Forget Bob

If you happen to email to a group of people you’ll love this feature. It automatically suggests the contacts that it thinks you must have missed. On my usage it pretty much was accurate enough to suggest me the correct recipients that I forgot to include. Great feature!

Got the Wrong Bob?

When people in your contacts list have same name it’s quite possible that we might accidentally pick the wrong person to send the email to. With "Got the wrong Bob?" feature Gmail alerts you if you intend to include those other contacts instead. Helps you avoid some embarrasment!

Hide Read Labels

With the limited screen real-estate we have on our computer screens it would be nice to show only relevant labels by default. "Hide Read Labels" hides those labels that are already been read.

Insert Images

As its name suggests, this feature helps you insert images directly into your email messages if those images are available online somewhere. Also, keep in mind that feature will not work if you’ve enabled the offline feature.

Hide Labels from Subjects

If you look at your email inbox and if all you see is those labels instead of your email subject line then it would time to hide those labels from the subject line. "Hide Labels from Subjects" feature helps you get rid of those labels from the subject line on your email inbox.

Google Calendar Gadget

If you use Google Calendar to organize your action items then you’ll love this feature which brings a little Google Calendar gadget to your Gmail sidebar. It displays some of your upcoming Google Calendar events.

Google Docs Gadget

Similar to Google Calendar gadget, Google Docs Gadget displays a little gadget on your Gmail sidebar with your recent docs, any docs that you’ve starred along with a quick search box.

Authenticated Senders

With "Authenticated Senders" feature you get a little icon next to the email sender indicating that these are verified senders. Currently you’ll be able to see the indicator icon next to PayPal and eBay senders but will be helpful if it gets expanded to include more senders. Read more about Authenticated Gmail Senders.

Custom Date Formats

If you live in a place where the date formats doesn’t match with the US date standard or if you prefer a different clock format than the default then "Custom Date Formats" feature can help you customize the date and time displayed on your email messages to your preferred format.

To make use of any of these Gmail Labs features, navigate to the Gmail Labs page where you see a long list of all the available features. For the features that you wanted to give a try click on the "Enable" button and make sure to hit the "Save Changes" button at the end of the page.

As with any "Labs"features things might not work as intended sometimes. If you happen to run into a situation where you’ve enabled the many Gmail Labs features to find that your Gmail Inbox doesn’t load then Gmail has a work around which effectively disables all Gmail Labs features. I’m sure you must have got convinced that Gmail is one of the best thing to happen to the email industry, particularly given the explosive use of some of the Gmail Labs features. Bureau of Communication’s forms can add some humor to some unpleasant letters.

Many times in our life we end up in a situation where we need to send out an email or a letter either apologizing for our neglectful actions or showing gratitude or the many day-to-day events. Why not add some humor to these letters to make the receiving event more of a surprise?

Bureau of Communcations has some predefined forms for selected occasions where you can fill-in the blanks and can really add some nice humorous touch to those emails or letters.

Currently they provide letter templates for,

• Declaration of Romantic Intent
• Unsolicited Feedback
• Observance of Holiday
• Airing of Grievance
• Formal Apology
• Statement of Gratitude
• Official Invitation
• Acknowledgement of Occasion

And there are more letter templates on the works, like "Request for Compensation".

Once you pick a template you’ll be presented with a sample letter template with gaps left appropriately for you to fill-in. When you roll your mouse over those blank spaces you should be able to type-in your creative humor there. Once you are happy you can either email the form or can print a hard copy of the same.

I know it’s not the next best thing to Facebook to get excited about but it surely can take some vent out and soften the mood if you fill-in the gaps creatively.

In this article let’s see how we can make use of the "Recent Items" menu shortcut and also how to make a stack item just for the recently used applications so it can be easily accessed.

Almost all of the latest operating systems have a means to keep track of the recently used items, be it either applications, documents, files or other file types, they have some way to easily get back to those recently used stuffs.

When it comes to Mac OSX it has a feature built into the menu bar itself with which you can get to the recently used items. It neatly organizes the recently used items by Applications and Documents. If you are comfortable clicking on the menu bar to get to the recently used applications and documents then you don’t have to follow the next step to enhance this a little bit more.

One of the best features of Mac OSX Snow Leopard is the Dock Stacks. It gave us a great way to see the stack of things in a nice visual way than the boring menu layout. Follow these steps below if you’d like to bring the recently used applications to your Dock Stack instead.

Open up Terminal and type-in,

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others array-add ‘{"tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }’

Once done, enter the following command to restart the dock,

kill all Dock

Make sure to begin the "Dock" word in capital letter.

You should now be able to see a new stack icon created on your Dock with convenient access to your recently used applications on your Mac OSX.

Use BuddyFuse to send Twitter updates and chat with your Google Talk friends without leaving Windows Live Messenger.

If you use Windows Live Messenger as your primary instant messaging client and you have friends using Google Talk you’d love this Windows Live Messenger plugin.

BuddyFuse is a well-polished Windows Live Messenger plugin that helps you integrate your Google Talk and Twitter accounts with your Windows Live Messenger application. What that means? With BuddyFuse you can chat with your Google Talk friends and send Twitter updates all within your Windows Live Messenger window.

Bringing these all together is a bit involved process but not that complicated for sure.

Download and install BuddyFuse.

Once done, sign into your Windows Live Messenger application as you do normally. You might be able to notice the message “Sign in to set up BuddyFuse”.

Once you sign-in you can notice the BuddyFuse icon on the top right side of your Windows Live Messenger window.

Click on it to reveal the menu with which you can manage your BuddyFuse accounts.

Currently BuddyFuse supports Google Talk, Twitter and Hyves accounts. (Hyves is a social networking service). Click on the “Google Talk” menu item.

And sign-in to your Google Talk account.

Keep in mind that you have to provide the full Gmail address otherwise you’ll get the above dialog. Once done you’ll see your Gmail account added to the list.

When you try to add your Twitter account you’ll be taken to a Twitter page where it asks you to authorize BuddyFuse to update your Twitter updates. Provide the information and hit the “Allow” button.

Once you authorize it you’ll be presented with a PIN number that you need to enter at BuddyFuse. Copy the PIN number.

And enter it at the BuddyFuse “Associate Twitter Account” dialog.

Follow @BuddyFuse if you wish.

Once you return to the main window you’ll be able to see the Google Talk and Twitter icons next to the BuddyFuse icon.

Click on the Google Talk icon to sign-in to your Google Talk account.

Once signed-in, you should be able to see a new section “Google Talk (BuddyFuse)” added to your Windows Live Messenger friends list.

Click on the Twitter icon to automatically tweet status updates.

What this means is that when you set your Windows Live Messenger status messages, those messages will be sent to your Twitter account as updates.

As you can see above, your Windows Live Messenger status messages are promptly updated on to your Twitter account.

BuddyFuse seems to be a really cool plugin if you use Windows Live Messenger the most. It gives you a reason to see if you can start using Windows Live Messenger back again as your primary instant messaging client. According to BuddyFuse they are working on to bring more third-party chat and social networks to BuddyFuse.

Windows Phone Custom Theme Creator helps you create really nice looking custom themes for your Windows Mobile 6.5 phone.

Windows Mobile 6.5 might not be as good as iPhone OS but it certainly looks a lot better than the earlier versions of Windows Mobile. One of the features that makes it better than the iPhone OS is its ability to use custom themes. That means you can create and apply custom themes to your Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Yes, that’s right, you can now pimp your Windows Mobile 6.5 phone to the wilderness of your imagination.

Windows Phone Custom Theme Creator is an official service from Microsoft that helps you easily create custom themes for your Windows Mobile 6.5 phone. That means you don’t have to jail-break your phone to make use of custom themes. Creating a theme is as simple as doing couple of clicks.

Once in there you’ll have to choose the phone that you want the custom theme to be applied. Actually the service won’t apply the theme directly but it asks for the phone model so it can create the theme files accordingly. Currently the "Verizon HTC Imagio", "AT&T HTC Pure" and ‘Sprint Samsung Intrepid" phones are supported but support for more phones would be added as it becomes available.

Once you choose the phone look for the "Color Your Phone" link at the top of the page. Click on that link and you’ll be presented with a page where you’ll see 3 different pages of the new Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Choose the page that you feel more comfortable to work with.

You can also use the "Portrait" or "Landscape" buttons at the bottom of the screen to choose the orientation.

You could also notice the "Color" chooser pallette at the top of the page. You can choose any of the pre-defined colors or you can choose the last pallette to define you own color.

You can use the "Style" buttons to pick a chrome style. There are 3 predefined chrome styles available at this time. Choose the one that are nice to your eyes.

Once you are happy with the way things look on this page click on the "Wallpaper Your Phone" link at the top of page to navigate to the next step.

This page would allow you to upload an image to be used as the wallpaper, size and position the wallpaper, adust the color settings, adjust the contrast settings and choose the effects that you want to apply to the wallpaper.

You can use the "Size/Position" button to reveal the above page where you can flip, rotate and resize the wallpaper.

You can use the "Color" button to adjust the "Hue", "Saturation" and "Tint" factors of the wallpaper.

You can use the "Contrast" button to adjust the contrast and brightness of the wallpaper image.

You can use the "Effects" button to apply different effects to the wallpaper including emboss, monochromatic, invert color, blur and cartoonize.

That’s all to creating custom theme for your Windows Mobile 6.5 phone. Once created you have to send the theme file to your mobile phone to apply the theme there. You can do this by either sending it over to the phone as a SMS message or you can use ActiveSync to transfer the theme information to your Windows Mobile 6.5 phone.

Transfer theme information using USB cable and ActiveSync

Click on the "Save" button and select a folder on your local computer where you want the theme to be saved. Remeber the theme file will be saved as ".cab" file. Use Microsoft ActiveSync to transfer the ".cab" file to your mobile phone. After the transfer completes navigate to the ".cab" file on your mobile phone and tap on the file to extract it. Then tap the "Start" button and then the "Settings" button and then tap on the "Today" link. When asked to select a theme choose the theme that you’ve just un-cabbed.

Receive theme information via SMS message

Enter your mobile phone number and hit the "Send" button. You’ll receive an SMS message that contains a link to download the ".cab" file. Tap on the link and download the ".cab" file to your "My Documents" folder on your phone. Click on the ".cab" file to extract the theme information from the ".cab" file. Then tap on the "Start" button and then on the "Settings" button and then on the "Today" link. You’ll be prompted to choose a theme and make sure to choose the above un-cabbed theme file.

Earlier we’ve mentioned that Windows Mobile 6.5 will be released on October 6, 2009 (today). It is out today and is becoming available very selectively (more information about this later). In this article let’s see how we can make use of Twitter to easily send tweets and notes to our Evernote notebook.

Earlier I’ve walked you through on how to make use of Twitter Favorites to effectively use Twitter from your iPhone. In this article let’s see how we can make use of the more powerful Evernote service to tweet our favorite tweets into our Evernote Notebook so it can be used and managed in a lot better way than the simplistic interface that Twitter provides to manage our Twitter Favorites.

Get started by following @myEN. myEN is a Twitter account from Evernote that takes care of sending your tweets to your Evernote account.

Once you follow myEN it will send you a direct message to finish the last step of linking your Twitter account to your Evernote account. Follow the link on that direct message.

You’ll be prompted to login to your Evernote account, if you haven’t already, and as soon as you login you’ll be prompted to link your Twitter account with your Evernote account. Click on the "Link accounts" button.

Once linked, you’ll see a confirmation message. It’s important that you see the confirmation message. I ran into an issue without seeing the confirmation message.

Once done, you are all set to tweet to your Evernote account. Basically there are 3 ways you can tweet to your Evernote Notebook.

1. Send public tweets to Evernote

Sending a public tweet is the most straight-forward way. Just tweet as you normally do but make sure to mention @myEN anywhere on your tweet. Yes, that will reduce your twitting capability to 135 characters essentially but that’s a decent trade-off for the kind of advantage the Twitter and Evernote combination brings-in.

2. Send Direct Messages to Evernote

If you don’t want your note to be publicly visible you can direct message your tweet to Evernote. Go into the "Direct Message" view and choose "myEN" from the direct message list. Type-in your tweet and hit "Send". Your tweet won’t appear on your public timeline but will only show-up on your Evernote Notebook.

3. Send picture tweets to Evernote

If you’d like to send a picture to your Evernote Notebook tweet as usual, public or direct message, and make sure to mention the TwitPic URL on your tweet.

Once you tweet using any of these ways you’ll see that a new note gets added to your Evernote Notebook for each tweet.

That’s all to linking Twitter and Evernote together to send all your favorite tweets to your Evernote Notebook. Isn’t that fascinating to see such an useful service like this?

Twitter and Evernote combination seems to be a killer combo for the many who uses both the services. Instead of dumping all my favorite tweets with the limited-capability "Twitter Favorites" I can now dump all my Twitter favorites to Evernote and can make use of it in a lot better way.

Tried to access Twitter with Camino today and was surprised to see this recommendation from Twitter. Of course, it would be an ideal world if there is only one browser that exists and that is Firefox.

In this “Mac Security” post let’s see how we can secure our Mac OSX by setting a screen saver password.

If there is a remote possibility that your computer could be used by anyone other than you without your permission then it would always be a good idea to soft-lock your computer before you step out.

But many times it might not be possible and on those circumstances it would, at least, be a good idea to keep your Mac secure by enabling password protection on screen saver so when your Mac wakes up from screen saver it will ask for password, effectively preventing unauthorized users from using it.

It’s very simple to set a screen saver password in Mac OSX.

Launch “System Preferences” and click on the “Desktop & Screen saver” option.

On the “Desktop & Screen Saver” options dialog click on the “Screen Saver” tab and then choose a screen saver of your choice, in this case the fabulous “RSS Visualizer”. Optionally, adjust the screen saver start time by sliding the slider at the bottom of the page accordingly. Quick Tip: The shorter the time period the better it is for your Mac screen.

Once done, close out the “Desktop & Screen Saver” dialog by clicking on the “Show All” button at the top of the dialog.

Once back on the “System Preferences” page click on the “Security” option.

On the Security preferences page click on the “Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver” option. If you have “automatic login” enabled you’ll be prompted to disable it as it would conflict with the “Require password” feature. Go ahead and disable it if prompted. Exit from System Preferences.

That’s all you have to do to secure your Mac with a screen saver password. It is a very simple trick that can save you some peace-of-mind when you are away from your computer.

In this post let’s see how you can configure your iPhone to make use of Google Sync for iPhone to keep your iPhone Mail, Contacts and Calendar in-sync with your Google Account.

If you use Gmail, Google Contacts or Google Calendar from your iPhone you must have realized the pain of keeping things in sync. Until now you have to manually do the sync and take care of the rest. Not anymore!

Google introduced Sync capabilities for your iPhone with which you can keep your iPhone’s Mail, Contacts and Calendar applications in-sync with your Google version of Gmail, Contacts and Calendar.

Google Sync uses Microsoft® Exchange’s ActiveSync® protocol to keep things in-sync and what that means is that you have to make use of your iPhone’s Microsoft Exchange capabilities. Keep in mind that only one account can be set with the Exchange version on your iPhone and so you have to be careful on which of your mail accounts get preference if you make use of the Exchange capability already on your iPhone.

With the nature of the ActiveSync protocol it would be possible that your existing contacts and calendar information might be wiped out before syncing. So it would be a good idea to backup your iPhone contacts and calendar information before you move further with the configuration.

Well, pre-requisites and intro aside, let’s see how you can configure your iPhone to use Google Sync.

Tap into the “Settings” app.

Tap into the “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” option.

Tap on the “Add Account…” option to add a new account which would be used to sync with your Google account.

Tap on the “Microsoft Exchange” option.

You’ll be presented with a page where you have to enter your full email address on both the “Email” and “Username” entries and you have to enter your Google account password. It’s important that you enter your email address in full including the portion after the @ symbol. Once done tap on the “Next” button.

You’ll be prompted with a warning dialog where it would say “Unable to Verify Certificate“. Tap on the “Accept” button to move forward.

You’ll then be presented with the “Exchange account verified” page where you’d have to enter the “Server” information along with the information that you’ve already entered. On the “Server” box enter “m.google.com“.

That completes the major portion of the configuration. Now, on the “Configured sync for Exchange” page turn on/off what you want to be in-sync, Mail, Contacts or Calendar.

When you turn on the “Calendar” option you’ll be prompted with the screen where it would ask you what to do with the existing local calendars on your iPhone. Tap on the “Keep on my iPhone” button to preserve those calendar information that you already have.

As you must have guessed, you’ll be presented with another dialog warning you of the possible duplicate entries. Tap on the “Keep on My iPhone” button to preserve those information.

Once everything is done, you should be able to see 2 new entries for the mail and calendar added to the “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” account list.

You are almost done. Finally, you have to launch the in-built Mail app to start the sync process. Sit back and wait for the sync to finish.

Once your iPhone finish syncing you’ll have the capability to keep your Mail, Contacts and Calendars in-sync with your Google Account without you doing any manual work.

I liked the convenience that Google Sync brings-in and I’m sure you’d like it too. As I said before it would be a good idea to back up your Contacts and Calendar information before you start this process. Add a custom signature to your iPhone emails and remove the standard “Sent from my iPhone” signature with this simple tweak.

If you haven’t set an email signature on your iPhone you must have seen it before that your iPhone Mail application will append a standard “Sent from my iPhone” signature to all the outgoing emails. Of course, you can remove the signature manually but that’s a manual process and if you happen to send a lot more emails then this would certainly become an overhead.

Instead, iPhone allows you to set custom email signatures which would in essence get rid of the standard “Sent from my iPhone” signature. So, how do we set a custom email signature on your iPhone? Very simple, follow these couple of taps and you’ll be all set.

Start by tapping into the “Settings” app on your iPhone.

Scroll down to locate the “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” item and tap into it.

On the “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” settings page tap into the “Signature” option.

You should be able to see the “Sent from my iPhone” message displayed. You can either use the “Clear” button to remove the standard message or you can type-in whatever you’d like to be the signature for your outgoing emails.

Once set, all your outgoing emails will bear the custom email signature without you doing anything extra. I hope you find this quick tip helpful to get rid of the “Sent from my iPhone” signature message.

CNET’s TechTracker can help you keep your installed softwares up to date.

Earlier we mentioned about AppFresh, a fantastic looking software updater, that’s only available for Mac users. It’s greatly functional and handy. So when I came across TechTracker, which is available for both Mac and Windows I thought of bringing it to your attention – particularly to those of our readers who use Windows.

TechTracker, from CNET, is a free software that scans your computer for installed softwares and let you know of any new updates available for those softwares. It doesn’t have that many bells-and-whistles when compared to AppFresh but it does a decent job of finding the softwares that are out of date.

Visit CNET TechTracker website and register for an account with them if you don’t have an account or you can use Facebook Connect to login.

Once signed-in you can download and install the TechTracker app.

Once installed TechTracker automatically scans your computer for installed softwares. It was surprisingly fast to come up with the list of installed softwares.

TechTracker lists all the installed softwares along with the version numbers, the date the latest version got added to CNET Downloads and a clear indication of whether the software is “Out of Date” or “Up to Date”. If it is “Out of Date” then it provides you an option to download the update from Download.com.

You can use the “More Info” button to find out more about the popularity of the update, the file size, the total number of downloads etc.

You can use the “Settings” button to subscribe to email alerts for a particular software.

Or you can use the “Software Alert Preferences” to receive email alerts when new software updates become available for the installed software. Ideally this should be done automatically but at least getting an email alert about your out of date software is not a bad alternative.

Even though TechTracker is no way in a position to be compared against AppFresh the advantage that this brings in is mostly for the Windows users. It does a similar job of what AppFresh do but can do the same job on both Mac as well as Windows platforms.

InvisibleHand Firefox extension recommends the best price for anything that you shop online to help you shop better.

Of the bazillion Firefox extensions only a few stands out and provide true value. One of that extension could be InvisibleHand.

When you shop online how would you make sure you get the best price available. Sure, you can visit different online retailers and can compare the price manually. Or you can use some of the price comparison sites such as PriceGrabber.com and find the best price available.

Well, as you might realize that’s a bit involved process and certain price comparison websites can only recommend prices for certain type of products. On the other hand, InvisibleHand, a tiny Firefox add-on, waits on your browser for you to shop online and recommends you of the best price available to help you shop better.

When you view a product online it pops-up (non-intrusive) an infolet to let you know of the best price available online for that product. It even let you see the other retailers that it compares against along with the prices they offer for the product without you leaving the browser or navigating to another website.

Let’s walk-thru a sample scenario where I have the InvisibleHand Firefox add-on installed and pretending that I’m looking for a PC Memory module. Using Firefox I visit Amazon.com and search for the memory module that I need. I was told a price of $36.60.

Without the add-on I would have went ahead and placed an order but with the trusted InvisibleHand add-on installed I wait for it to do the job and there comes the pop-up. To my surprise InvisibleHand suggested that I can save 48% by purchasing the same from NewEgg.com.

If you look towards the right side of the pop-up you could see 2 buttons, “View this item on…” and “View other retailers“.

For some reason, let’s say you don’t prefer to shop at NewEgg.com. Instead of cutting you off right there or forcing you to shop at NewEgg.com InvisibleHand on the other hand helps you still shop better by providing you with a list of other retailers who are offering the same product which it used on its comparison. As you could see that it conveniently lists the retailers in terms of their price offering…pretty neat!

Since I see the price being less on NewEgg.com I clicked on the “View this item on Newegg.com” button. I was taken to the NewEgg.com site and the price was $18.99, fair enough!

Wait, it gets interesting from here. While I was looking at the page, in a few seconds, InvisibleHand pops open another infolet and told me that the price is even cheaper at Buy.com.

With 19% further discount that seemed to be a steal and so I clicked on the “View this item on Buy.com” button.

As expected, InvisibleHand loaded the Buy.com page where I saw the final price of that memory module (as of this writing) being $15.37 after discounts. With the satisfaction and confidence of finding the lowest price I can, without me doing much, I went ahead and placed an order.

Just before I placed the order I thought why not check out the price for the same at PriceGrabber.com. Well, it turned out to be that I would have paid more if I must have used just PriceGrabber.com to base my comparison on.

Isn’t that a cool extension on your book if you shop online much? On top of saving time InvisibleHand can make you feel confident that you found the best price you could find from those trusted retailers.

With all the convenience it offers I do find an inconvenience factor, why not show me THE BEST price right on the first pass itself rather than asking me to jump to NewEgg.com in between (affiliate?). That’s just one gripe that I have but wouldn’t put it in a complainy-way.

Overall, InvisibleHand is one of those few Firefox add-ons that makes a clear difference and I’m sure this will get better from here. If you find other uses of InsivibleHand or if you have any personal InvisibleHand experience that is worth sharing with others please do so on comments.

AppFresh keeps all your applications fresh on your computer with automatic software updates.

These days all the major operating systems take care of keeping them up to date with updates and patches without much human intervention or with minimal human intervention.

Whereas, when it comes to third party software updates you have to be on top of it and many of the softwares can only inform you about an available update when you actually use the software.

If you use a Mac then you are blessed with a cute little free application, AppFresh, that keeps track of all your software updates in one place. AppFresh scans your computer to find out about all the softwares that you have installed on your computer and tells you if those softwares are up-to-date or not. If there is a software update available then it will list it out along with an option to update the software without you launching the software yourself to update to the latest version.

It is, in fact, very straight-forward to use AppFresh. Just download and launch AppFresh.

You’ll be greeted with a authorization dialog asking you to grant AppFresh permission to automatically update the softwares that it considers safe. It moves the old versions to Trash so in case if you need to recover you have a way to get it back. Also, it would be a good idea to have a clean backup of your system available somewhere in case something goes wrong. Click on the Next button.

You’ll be presented with an IUseThis Integration dialog. IUseThis is an online service that allows you to have a backup of the list of applications on your computer with the version information. This would be particularly handy if/when you have to re-image your computer and you don’t know what different softwares that you had before it went bad. With IUseThis you can retrieve the list of applications installed on your computer and if/when integrated with AppFresh you can just run AppFresh to install the latest version of all the softwares that you had on your computer.

Choose a username and password to create an account with IUseThis.com. Check the “Add AppFresh to my profile” checkbox to integrate AppFresh with IUseThis. Keep in mind that integrating IUseThis is an optional step and so if you prefer not to integrate then don’t enter a username and password and click on the “Finish” button.

AppFresh will now scan for all the installed software on your computer.

Once it finishes scanning you should be able to see AppFresh main window where it lists all the applications installed on your computer along with a status description of if an update is available or not.

As you can see on the left sidebar you can narrow down on the updates by Applications, Plugins, Widgets, Preference Panes and System Updates or by vendors. This helps if you have quite a lot of applications installed so you can narrow down easily.

If you look at the middle pane you should be able to see the list of applications and there are 3 buttons on top which you can use to check for updates, update all applications, delete an app update.

Once you select an application on the middle pane you should be able to see more information about the app on the right sidebar which includes the latest release information which is pretty handy.

If you choose an application and right click (Control click) the context menu pops up and provides choices to exclude an app from showing up on the list, skip an update and of course a choice to install the selected update.

Once you choose to update an application AppFresh will do its best to locate and install the update without you doing much. But in cases where it can’t locate a proper update it will pop open a window for you to choose the link where it can get the update. It’s very simple and straight-forward.

Once you click on the appropriate link AppFresh will take care of the rest to install the update.

When the updates finish you should be able to see what applications got updated along with the version numbers and a status message of how the update go.

Overall AppFresh is a wonderfully crafted applications that blends very nicely with the Mac look-and-feel along with performing the job quite consistently. Surely AppFresh can keep all your Mac applications up to date.

Okay, so now you know it might be worth upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 let’s see how you can easily upgrade your iPhone to the 3.1 version.

Plug your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes.

Go into your iPhone Summary tab and click on the “Update” button.

A confirmation dialog will popup asking you to acknowledge the upgrade. Click on the “Update” button to continue the update.

You’ll be presented with a dialog that lists the features that comes with the 3.1 update. Click on the “Next” button.

Once confirmed you’ll be presented with dialogs to accept the license terms. Click on the “Agree” button.

You’ll then be presented with a flurry of dialogs that keep you updated with the update progress. While this happens your iPhone will restart and will hang in there for a while its firmware gets updated. DO NOT unplug or power off your iPhone while these updates happen.

As part of the update iTunes will inform you about the final restart.

Once everything settles down and your iPhone restarts you should be able to see the latest version of the iPhone OS on your iPhone Summary tab in iTunes.
