Multiple Emmy Winner and Documentary filmmaker Christopher Schueler has created a new documentary - The First Millimeter: Healing the Earth. The documentary dives into how using topsoil can be a key element to fight against global warming.

Mr. Schueler gave a recent interview with The NM Independent and said

“Basically it’s so simple. It is about changing the top soil,” Schueler says. “It’s healing the earth.”

The idea is to churn up the topsoil by allowing herds of animals to graze, urinate and defecate on the land. The churning up, as well as natural fertilizer, will spur the grasses to grow. And those grasslands will “pull carbon out of the atmosphere. Carbon is a fertilizer. The problem is that there is too much in the air,” Schueler says. “Three hundred years ago the grasslands in America … were chest high. The buffaloes would come in a herd and come in and chew off the top part of the grasses. They would urinate, (drop) dung.”

Schuelers documentary will begin airing on PBS stations across the nation starting in June.

Gardeners around should be aware of a new kind of mulch that is being used in their garden which could effect their dogs and pets. It’s called cocoa mulch, and just like chocolate, its smell is what attracts many gardeners and pets to it. Cocoa mulch is extremely popular among gardeners mainly because of its fine texture and pleasant aroma.

Most homeowners have no idea the mulch poses any threat to their animals. Gardeners who are pet owners should avoid using cacao bean shell mulch in their landscaping to avoid any health risks for their beloved pets.

According to veterinarians:

The odds of dogs dying from eating the fresh cocoa mulch are low, but those suspected of ingesting it should be examined by a veterinarian asap.

Its always better to be on the safe side and avoid risks for your pets.

Your garden is the pride of your home, but how do you ensure the landscape does not reduce your abode to ashes?! If fireproofing your landscape hasn’t occurred to you until now, you’ve been just plain lucky, I would say!

Too Late for Fireproofing Landscaping Correct Fireproof Landscaping

As important as it is to have a neat little garden to set off the beauty of your house, it is necessary you take precautions to safeguard your house against any episodes of fire. I suggest you start right away. Pruning and watering play a significant role here. They ensure a green belt around your house that would obviously keep fire at bay. It helps to keep your plants green. But if its Fall, rake those dry leaves out often.

If your climate calls for firewood, make sure you stack them at least 30 ft from your house. Storing flammable materials come under the same rule. In addition, it’s a good idea to thin trees and shrubs within 30 ft from the house.

For a garden that has trees, keep the area around the trees clear of small plants. Planting trees and shrubs at ample distance from each other is a smart move too. I recommend you get rid of those flammable plants and replace them with draught-resistant ones to minimize your risks. Also, there is no place for dead trees, plants and shrubs in a fire-safe landscape!

Any amount of precautions can sometimes just not be sufficient. So, ensure that your fire alarm is in working condition, and you know your escape route in case of a fire. Stay safe!

REEEAAK, CREEEAAK, CREEEAAK… The sound of trees swaying in the wind can be pretty ominous, especially if they sometimes come crashing down within inches of your painstakingly renovated home. Just ask Sandy Herbert, a lawyer who lives in a Colonial Revival home built in the early 1900s on a heavily wooded acre in Englewood, New Jersey, and her husband, John.

After more than 20 years spent restoring her three-story fixer-upper, Herbert decided it was time to take on the menacing forest of dark trunks she stared at from her kitchen window. “Every time there was a storm, we’d have trees down,” says Herbert. “None had fallen on the house, but we knew it was just a matter of time.” The last straw came when an enormous one landed right behind the house and made a huge dent in the lawn.

The Pro Steps In

The Herberts called Denny Wiggers, a horticulturalist and landscape contractor they’d hired once before. His diagnosis was swift: Dead Backyard Syndrome. “The yard was full of tulip trees, a fast-growing variety related to the magnolia,” Wiggers says. “They were lanky and poorly branched because they were fighting for light.” Over the years, he guessed, tree seeds had simply sprouted where they fell, creating a crowded canopy that blocked the sun. “Even a mild storm could have spelled disaster for the house,” he notes.

Rather than bulldozing the yard flat, though, Wiggers suggested getting rid of five particularly scrawny 80-foot tulip trees. Doing so would let the healthier trees thrive and allow the scraggly lawn to fill out. The Herberts doubted his strategy would work, but when Wiggers showed them the yards of some of his clients, which had healthy trees arched over beautiful lawns, they decided to give it a shot.

Two weeks later the takedown team arrived. “You can’t cut trees off at the base, because even if they don’t hit the house or fall on somebody, they’ll damage the yard,” says Wiggers. A climber began with a large tree near the garage. He shimmied up its trunk using shoe and hand spikes, tied a rope to a large branch, then looped the free end of the rope over a larger branch above it and lowered the end to a man on the ground, creating a pulley system. The climber cut off the first branch, while the second man gave the rope enough slack to lower it safely to the ground. The two men repeated the process, cutting off branches and chunks of the trunk, until the tree was a mere stump.

Next, what to do with the stumps? Wiggers insisted they go, because they would still absorb water and disrupt the growth of the lawn. He hired a contractor to pulverize them into sawdust with a grinding machine.

With the five trees gone and the wood hauled away, the yard was bright and sunny, but the lawn was uneven where the roots and stumps had been. Wiggers brought in topsoil and a Bobcat to excavate and flatten it out, returning later with grass seed.

The Aftermath

“What a relief to know the dead trees are gone,” says Herbert. “Plus, I never realized how many shadows the trees had been casting.” She and her husband are enjoying their new yard so much they just built a stone patio so they can spend more time outside.

The Bill

Two days of tree removal: $3,600

Topsoil: $900

One day of excavation and grading (including equipment rental): $1,200

Total: $5,700

Questions to Ask Your Tree-Service Pro

Q: What credentials does a good tree guy have?

A: Some states have licensing programs for arborists, and the International Society of Arboriculture offers certification and training. But when you’re hiring, don’t rely on credentials alone. Get referrals, of course, and ask for before-and-after pictures of their work. “Call their former clients and ask if you can visit,” says Herbert. And make sure your pro is bonded and licensed in your state.

Q: How do I know if I need to remove a tree?

A: “Look for rot or decaying spots on the trunk, like where a branch used to be,” says Wiggers. Other bad signs include bare, droopy branches and leaves that crinkle at the edges. Deciduous trees that drop leaves in the fall earlier than similar trees could be suffering stress or infection.

Q: Should I ever take down a healthy tree?

A: “In some cases, a sun-blocking tree with lots of surface roots should be removed,” says Wiggers. Certain species, such as sweetgum and silver maple, tend to have surface roots, but most trees can develop them, especially if they’re grown in shallow soil or near water. “Such trees topple more easily when there are strong winds, and they’ll choke out other vegetation over time.”

Q: If I take down a tree, won’t I get standing water in my yard?

A: It’s highly unlikely. “As a general rule, vegetation and grass absorb more water than a tree,” says Wiggers. So removing a dead tree can actually speed water absorption. Of course, the sinkhole where the stump was removed should be filled in and graded so it won’t collect water.

Q: Can felled wood be cut up for firewood, furniture, or mulch?

A: In many cases, yes—but it depends on the tree’s type and condition. Ask your tree pro for advice, and he’ll give you suggestions about what to do with the wood.

Why don’t you select a bouquet made predominantly of flowers that correspond to the month your mother was born? Just as birthstones, Birth flowers, too, endow their recipient with special graces. It’s commonly known that flowers induce positive energy with all happy moments they bring you.

* A happy bunch of Violets or purple Irises convey faithfulness and pure love to your February born mom.
* March moms would love yellow daffodils.
* April moms enjoy delicate daisies.
* White Lily of Valleys for the happy, sweet May Mom.
* And nothing less than the queen of flowers for mothers born in June.
* The birth flower for July Mom is the Larkspur,
* while that of the August Mom is the graceful Gladiolus.
* Asters and Morning Glories if your mother was born in September
* and calendula for October Mom.
* November Moms welcome Chrysanthemums
* and nothing less than Poinsetias for December Mom.

For flowers that express your undying appreciation of America’s #1 Mom gift her a bouquet expressing your love and prayers for her.

You’ve hopefully kissed goodbye to last year’s trends. This is a new year and what you need is a makeover if you’re still stuck in the rut! Okay so we’re in the latter half of 2009 but it’s never too late to begin.

Until now if you’ve only had trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds to boast of in your landscape (oh! how boring), I’ll help you face the truth. Landscaping is about a lot more.

Let’s start with the blooms—allow color! That’s right. It’s not just about oranges and reds any more. Give way to a riot of colors such as pinks, purples, whites, and even an occasional blue! Alternatively, if natives are your thing, no harm in going with the trend. In fact, for those with less time on hand, native shrubs are ideal. They need little care and grow tremendously well (they come in several colors too).

Despite the entry of colors, green never goes out of fashion. So even out the colors with ample greenies to soothe the eye. Only greens can do that thing.

There’s no harm in bringing in veggies in your landscape. It just goes to show you care for your family’s safety. Grow tomatoes, radishes, herbs or whatever else that suits you. Trust me; vegetables give your garden that eclectic mix.

And what’s that terracotta figurine or garden bench doing inside your house or in the attic? Time to bring it out to the front yard. Yes! Outdoor furniture and décor is pretty hot this season. You can even throw in a few colorful cushions (waterproof ones of course!) on a trendy set of garden chairs to create interest.

Finally, keep plastic at bay, for heaven’s sake! This is the time we need biodegradables the most; and what better place to start but your own garden. Chuck those plastic containers and go for biodegradable ones. You’ll see they go better with the overall look of your landscape.

Of course it’s all about doing what suits you the best. But keep in mind that there are landscaping faux pas too; and you don’t want to commit them every season.

Once upon a time, a long, long while ago, American landscape designs were the typical bold, in-your-face, transforming sort. The landscape was re-sculpted to match ideas that were prevalent in Europe and England. Native plants were eschewed and alien ones were forced into bloom in their place.

Gradually though, America’s unconventionality broke free of its restraints and people realized how much more comfortable being oneself is. New designscapes that protected and cherished indigenous plants have been embraced wholeheartedly throwing traditional gardenscapes to the winds. American Landscapes are so much more natural making it hard to figure out why exactly your landscape stands out from the others on the block! Here are more than a few tips that help you create your unique American landscape.

•	During home and landscape construction, take care to stockpile the natural, native soil for later use and to transplant smaller bushes and plants. Try hardest to maintain and incorporate mature trees that already exist on your property into the landscape. Not only are they a source of shade and beauty, they add value to your property.

•	Pay attention to and stick to your budget always. Do the landscape in affordable stages—planting the lower priced ground cover, or the walkway before the gazebo—you can always add new elements when the budget permits.

•	Whatever the budget constraint, spending money up front on a landscape designer is worth it if not just for a plan that you can refer to while planning your dream love landscape.

•	Handing over the entire show to a landscape designer after you approve of his exclusively designed love landscape is worth the trouble as he would take care of bringing the various elements like masonry, plants, hardscapes (sidewalks, decks, walls and gazebos), decking, and irrigation together.

•	Not only that, you do not have to worry about further upkeep and maintenance- The landscape designer would have contractors to handle everything from pruning and mowing to replacing broken sprinklers and plants.

Landscapes need to harmonize with the natural surrounding—native trees and plants; that are suited to the weather and growing conditions. If nothing else, the maintenance involved is substantially less, making your garden a thing of beauty that is a joy forever.

Wood Pellets—Your Answer To Efficient And Affordable Heating Alternative

Energy prices are soaring and it’s natural if you’re looking for new and better heating alternatives. You would’ve already considered electricity, fossil fuels, and firewood. Each has its pros and cons, but if you’re looking at fuel efficiency along with convenience and eco-friendliness, wood pellets should be your obvious choice.

Order Today: Phone: 201-444-0155

Wood pellets have just about 10% moisture content, making them a lot more fuel-efficient than firewood, besides being higher heat producers than cordwood or woodchips.

Having used wood pellets a lot, I’ve found that my home is comparatively dirt-free, nobody has dust allergies, and (this is the best part) they’re incredibly easy to store! An entire season’s supply can fit in just 6”x6”x6” space; and storage is less than half the hassle in comparison to firewood!

What’s great is wood pellets are quite the favorite with conservationists too! This natural fuel doesn’t use glue or binders apart from burning clean. Made from waste products, wood pellets support forest sustainability initiatives, which makes it the ideal heating alternative of modern times.

Every homeowner is concerned about the cost factor. Wood pellet stoves are a lot more economical than gas or electric heating systems. You can get stoves that heat particular areas in your home or one that can heat the entire house. The good part is—your heating bill will come down considerably once you make the much-needed shift from gas or electric heaters to wood pellet stoves.

With all that money saved, there’s so much more you can do. I got myself a whole new, trendy winter wardrobe! Inside or out, I’m gonna stay as warm as I can!
