Visiting the dentist a couple of times each year for a thorough cleaning and routine checkup is critical to maintaining good overall health. Even if they do not practice it, most adults know that going to the dentist is important. A recent study, however, showed that one social group is far less likely to visit the dentist on a regular basis. According to research from the CDC, adults who smoke are less likely to visit the dentist. In fact 20% of the smokers surveyed said it had been more than five years since their last dental visit, only 10% of non-smokers claimed to have waited that long between visits.

As a Deptford dentist I find this information particularly disheartening, considering the fact that smokers carry a significantly higher risk of contracting dangerous infections or developing oral cancer. By failing to visit a dentist for regular checkups, they are putting their health at great risk. Of concern to me, is the fact that a large portion of the smokers surveyed claimed that they did not visit the dentist due to financial restraints. It is important that everyone see the dentist, regardless of their socioeconomic standing. This is why I offer my patients a number of flexible payment options.
Have you ever been tempted to skip cleaning your teeth in the morning or evening, or have you ever decided you really can't be bothered to floss today? If the answer is yes then you may want to rethink your oral hygiene routine, as spending just a few minutes each day could greatly lessen your chances of needing treatment from your Deptford dentist.

The importance of looking after your teeth on a daily basis can't be overemphasized enough. For a start you will enjoy fresher breath and a nicer looking smile, but you'll also be far less likely to need extensive dental treatment in Deptford. In addition you'll be doing something that will help protect your general health, as oral health and overall health are closely linked.
French actor Jean Dujardin won the Academy Award for Best Actor for "The Artist," but celebrity dentists say his smile could use a makeover, reports the Huffington Post. "For his smile, I would definitely recommend in-office whitening,
Invisalign to align his teeth, then porcelain veneers," said celebrity
dentist Debra Glassman to the Huffington Post.

Dujardin starred as a silent film star coming to terms with the advent of talking pictures in "The Artist," a black-and-white French film that won five Oscars in 2012. Dujardin, 39, previously was best known in France for his comic role as a spy in a series of spoofs directed by Michel Hazanavicius. To date, Dujardin is the only French actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Oil pulling is a type of Ayurvedic detox that has suddenly began to stir interest in both the natural, alternative health communities, as well as the mainstream dental world. Proponents of the practice believe that it is a fantastic daily detox, capable of stripping the body of all types of harmful toxins and dangerous bacteria. To be honest, the practice was brought to my attention by a Deptford dentist client who had extremely nice teeth, so I decided to do some research myself.

As it turns out, there have actually been scientific studies on oil pulling that show it is actually quite effective at killing cavity-causing bacteria. In fact, a study done with sesame oil as the product of choice, shows that it could potentially destroy as much as 50% of the bacteria in your mouth, making it more effective than brushing, flossing, or mouth rinse alone.
Missing teeth should be replaced with dental implants when possible, reports DentistryIQ. More than two-thirds of adults ages 35 to 44 have lost one or more permanent teeth, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The usual causes for tooth loss include gum disease, accidents, failed root canals or accidents.

If you lose a tooth, then you can't chew the food properly before swallowing, the stomach and intestines will work harder to absorb nutrients. That means you absorb fewer nutrients and are less healthy," said Dr. Michael Tischler, a dentist and co-founder of Tischler Dental, to DentistryIQ.

Becoming a dentist is no small feat. Earning a doctorate in dentistry is quite an accomplishment. For some reason there is an idea that dentists are not doctors. The title D.D.S begs to differ. D.D.S. stands for Doctorate of Dental Surgery. There are other titles such as D.M.D, or Doctorate of Dental Medicine. To earn these credentials a potential dentist must take many years of school, perform a residency just like any other doctor, and take continuing education to ensure that the skills learned in school, continue throughout the dentist's career.

To be a dentist in Deptford, NJ one must have graduated high school. While in high school, a potential dentist in Deptford, NJ must take science classes including biology, chemistry, and physics. Post high school, the potential dentist must attend an accredited University or College. This time in college is spent earning a Bachelor Degree. As an undergraduate, the student must take science courses and earn high marks. These science courses are a requirement for any person wishing to become a dentist because without them, the student will not be accepted to any Dental University or College.

Once accepted into an accredited Dental Program at a University, the potential Dentist in Deptford, New Jersey will begin learning the tools of his or her trade. A total of four years will be spent in the Dental Program. The first two years are spent in the lab and learning source material from books. The final two years are spent in clinical application. Men or women looking to become a dentist in Deptford, NJ will spend the entire last two years of their schooling under close supervision of licensed Dentists, not unlike resident doctors who are under the supervision of attending physicians.
History of Dentistry

The art of dentistry as we know it in the industrial world is relatively new and by no means globalized. However, dentistry has existed in one form or another since at least 7,000 BC. Throughout the years it has changed quite significantly. Now considered a necessary and valid part of healthcare, it was once a process that was handled by barbers and jewelry makers. The more you know about the dentists of the past, the more you will come to appreciate the amenities provided by today's Woodbury dentists.

The First Dentists

The very first dentists were likely bead makes living in the Indus Valley around 7,000 BC. These individuals used a bow drill to bore holes into damaged teeth, correcting dental ailments. Patients weren't provided any sort of pain relief that we know of, but were held down by dental assistants.

It was another two centuries before any real changes occurred in the history of dentistry and it is at that time that the Sumerians begin to explore the possibility that tooth worms were responsible for creating cavities. This hypothesis, which we now know to be clearly false, was derived from the fact that cavities somewhat resemble the holes that worms often bore in wood. The dentists of this time did not resemble today's dentist in Woodbury at all. In fact, it would be several more centuries before dentistry became a legitimate health profession. At this point in time, practitioners were still artisans trained to perform other tasks, such as bead making.

Barber Shop Dentists
In the thirteenth century an interesting part of history gave way to the existence of barber shop dentists. These professionals could give you a shave, perform surgery, extract your tooth, and trim a little off the top all in one setting. Most of the barber shop dentist relied on hokey tinctures and folk remedies. Teeth were rarely extracted and when they were it was a painful, disturbing event. At this time there was still not truly defined dental profession.

In the 1400s lay barbers were forbidden to continue providing surgery, but were still permitted to extract teeth. Barber-surgeons, who were considered to be more professional, branched off into a sector of medicine that would eventually give birth to the modern surgeon.

The Father of Modern Dentistry
The 1700s were a time of great advancement in the field of dentistry. The first dental textbook was created right before the turn of the century. In 1723, Pierre Fauchard, a Frenchman, published "A Treatise on Teeth", a crowing accomplishment that would later lead to his being known as the father of modern dentistry. Though even Fauchard hardly resembled modern dentists like the dentist in Woodbury.
It has long been believed that small amounts of fluoride on a routine basis will help strengthen the enamel and prevent tooth decay. That is why, for areas that lack fluoride naturally, it can be added to community water supplies. Past research proved decay rates were lowered by over 50 percent with community water fluoridation.

Fluoride prevents cavities by inhibiting the loss of minerals from the enamel. It also fights against the bacteria that cause cavities. It does this by working against the acid which often leads to decay. With a healthy diet, good oral hygiene, and fluoride you are significantly lowering your risk of dental decay.
A recent posting from a study conducted by a sub-group of the ADA revealed that dentists are often in the best position to detect potentially cancerous lesions during routine examinations. While an oral cancer screening in Deptford may detect potentially malignant and malignant lesions, as a local dentist I am still encouraged by the ADA to remain alert for early signs and stages of cancer by providing all of my patients with visual and tactile examinations, particularly those who use tobacco or heavily consume alcohol.

Cancer starts when the core structure of the DNA becomes altered. When this genetic mutation happens cells grow in an uncontrollable manner and develop into a lump or tumor. Mouth, or oral cancer in Deptford, occurs in any part of the mouth. This includes the tongue, lips, inside of the cheek, in the gums, and also in the tonsils and salivary glands. Most people diagnosed with oral cancer are over the age of 50. Though there is no single cause for the illness there are a number of factors that can contribute, which is why it is important to screen for oral cancer early.
The most important part of dental care happens at home. That is where brushing and flossing should happen on a regular basis. Otherwise the local dentist will see you only every six months. There is very little we can do for Deptford teens and teeth without the routine home care established. Unfortunately dental decay is still the single most common chronic disease for children and teens because they are not following the steps of basic oral hygiene.

About 1 in 10 teenagers has the tendency to accumulate tartar more quickly than others. Once plaque has become hardened it is impossible to remove without professional help. This is why daily oral hygiene is so important. Unfortunately few teens realize that importance until it is too late.
One of the number one questions I get asked as a dentist in Deptford has to do with knowing when it is the proper time to switch out one's toothbrush. In all honesty, the answer can be a rather complicated one.

The American Dental Association recommends that patients switch out their toothbrush at least every three to four months. This is the basic guideline, regardless of what else is happening. There are numerous other instances that call for the need of a new brush as well.
How far will you go to get the bright, white teeth of your dreams? Unfortunately there are some who are taking this cosmetic dental treatment too far. Dentists call this bleachorexia in Deptford. Instead of making their teeth look brighter and healthier they are ruining the enamel. The in office treatments and at home kits are abused to the point of eroding the enamel.

A growing number of Americans are obsessed with whitening their teeth. With this obsession naturally comes a number of available products for teeth whitening in Deptford. There are pens, kits, toothpastes and all of them have a varying degree of bleaching power. Instead of consulting with a local dentist people are taking teeth whitening into their own hands. In most cases this leads to bleachorexia in Deptford.
You probably know if tartar and plaque are left on your teeth it provides the right conditions for the millions of bacteria in your mouth to thrive. As these substances continue to build up along the gum line the bacteria will begin to emit acids that irritate the gums. This means they may bleed, become inflamed, and start pulling away from your teeth. Pockets form, making even more hard to reach places where bacteria can take over and infect your mouth. The early stages of gum disease are often referred to as gingivitis. If you suspect you might be suffering form this disease it is time to contactour dentist and speak with us about deep cleaning in Deptford. If gingivitis is not diagnosed and treated early the inflammation will worsen, the pockets will deepen, and the substructures holding your teeth in place will begin to be destroyed.

Gum disease is a very common problem for many residents of Deptford. In fact, statistics show over 80 percent of the population may be suffering from this disease and not even know it. In most cases the infection is mild and the symptoms are unnoticeable. With regular brushing, flossing, and mouthwash many people can combat the problem before it escalates into something much worse. There are some however, that contract gum disease and be unable to fight it off. The supporting structures of your smile will begin to break down. Teeth will become loose and may eventually fall out without the treatment of Deptford deep cleaning.
Braces

Braces are the kind of thing that draws attention to a person, and usually not positive attention. They are generally pretty clunky in the mouth, they impair speech and eating, and they can make your mouth extremely sore. The end result, however, is a straight and beautiful smile.

Dental braces are a type of orthodontic treatment used to correct teeth that are crowded, crooked, protruding, out of alignment or have irregular spacing. By moving the teeth into the ideal position, dental braces help to create a more attractive and healthier smile for both children and adults.

Before you can determine whether a braces option is right for you, it is important that you understand what is involved with treatment and what braces cost.

When teeth are crooked and crowded, keeping them clean becomes very difficult. If brushing and flossing cannot be completed properly, tooth decay, gum disease and possible tooth loss can occur.

An improper bite can interfere with your ability to chew and speak properly, as well as cause abnormal wear to the enamel of your teeth. If your teeth are protruding and/or your upper and lower teeth don't come together comfortably (called malocclusion, or a bad bite), jaw problems also may arise.

Therefore, by keeping your teeth in the proper alignment and allowing better oral hygiene, dental braces do more than keep your smile looking good. They also help you keep your teeth, gums and oral cavity healthy. There is now evidence to prove that the periodontal infections resulting from poor oral hygiene can enter the blood stream and cause cardiac conditions.

We are what we eat. If you eat donuts, you will likely look like a donut. If you eat cheese, you might be a little chunky. If you eat lots of sugar, you are likely to be quite crystallized and brittle. The unfortunate thing is, your teeth will also become crystallized and brittle from eating too much sugar.

At the dentist in Deptford NJ, we like our patients to have a working, growing knowledge of foods to avoid for healthy teeth and gums. It sounds a bit woeful, it is true. You were looking for a good dentist, not a dietician, am I right? However, what is generally good for your body will be good for your teeth as well. Never thought you had the chance to lose a few holiday pounds by listening to your dentist, did you? The truth is, you just might! You teeth are an extension of your body. Through your gums flows blood, and there are nerves in each and ever tooth. It stands to reason, then, that if you the inside of your body is well-fed and healthy, your teeth will be as well. Not to mention, healthy and strong teeth break down food more thoroughly, making food more easily digestible, which makes it easier for your body to extract nutrients from that food. Fun, huh? I know you're excited! Also, think about the fact that your mouth is the first place in which digestion in the body starts. You are hanging on the edge of your seat now, I'll bet! Now that I have your attention, let me clue you in on the best foods for your teeth.

Fear of the Deptford dentist is extremely common, with many individuals toting around this deep rooted fear and avoiding dental care as a result. However, a recently published survey from Consumer Reports shows that most of this fear is highly unwarranted. Of the 50,000 readers of Consumer Reports who had recently had a root canal, 95% considered the procedure to not be extremely painful and 94% of those surveyed who had recently undergone an extraction came to the same conclusion.

For many people, dental fear is rooted in childhood. Parents often make the mistake of not taking their children to the dentist until they have developed years of tooth decay, requiring fillings or worse. The lack of preventative dental care, leads to invasive procedures, and a lifelong association with dentists and pain. This is one of the many reasons that the ADA recommends parents take their children to a Deptford pediatric dentist beginning early in life, in fact, before the first birthday. Parents are supposed to continue these preventative care sessions at least every six months. Of course, for those of us who are adults, first experiences cannot be changed. However, there are many other things you can do to help reduce your fear of dentist in Deptford.
The American Dental Association is promoting the use of mouthguards to protect teeth from injury, reports Dentistry Today. The ADA recommends mouthguards for a wide variety of sports, not just contact sports such as football or hockey.

"Mouthguards aren't just for football players or hockey players," said Dr. Alice Boghosian, ADA Consumer Advisor spokeswoman and dentist, to Dentistry Today.
"Mouthguards should be worn while participating in any sport that involves the risk of injury, such as basketball, volleyball or gymnastics. Why risk damaging your gums or losing a tooth?"
