Hail Damage update from Rich Cantwell

I wanted to give you a quick update on where we stand with the recent insurance claim regarding the enormous hailstorm a few weeks back. The golf-ball sized hail took its toll causing some substantial damage leading to numerous leaks in offices, hallways, nursery, Fellowship Hall and a few rooms in the GL (Garden Level). As you probably noticed the past few weeks and especially on Sunday, the facility crew is doing an outstanding effort in getting to as many leaks as they can and being proactive in fixing areas that may be prone to leak with substantial amounts of rain. To date, we have repaired close to 100 leaks in the roof on the west side of the building. We have filed an insurance claim and are working feverishly to narrow down bids for a possible complete roof replacement. I’m having several companies come out and extensively inspect the roof; the damage to the underlayment is significant enough that repair would not be cost effective.

In the meantime, we have asked a local restoration company, at the request of our insurance carrier, to come in and address issues associated with water soaked carpet, walls, ceiling tiles, and electrical issues to ensure that the office wing, nursery and Fellowship Hall are effectively maintained according to standards associated with the EPA and OSHA and that the affected areas can be occupied. Getting the leaks temporarily stopped and preventing any mold or mildew issues is our primary concern. Please pardon the dust in the next few weeks as we work through some short-term and long-term fixes to the west side of the building. There will be numerous floor fans throughout the building to aid in the process of removing the excess moisture from the carpet and walls. I apologize in advance for the inconvenience and the less-than-perfect working conditions.

A Word of Thanks from Kathy Tate

To the person who recently gave several cans of salmon to the DFC Pantry – we caught you being obedient to the Lord . . . and you probably didn’t even know it!! Someone with severe dietary restrictions, due to health issues, needed food from the DFC Pantry. When I think of the Pantry, I don’t think of dietary restricted foods - I think of cereal, mac & cheese, canned veggies, tuna fish and PB&J. But when a trip was made to the Pantry, there, in a bag that had just been donated, were two cans of salmon – one of the few foods this person can eat!! Isn’t God good in supplying at the very moment of need!! And in this case, He met this need through someone being obedient to His calling to provide food for the DFC Pantry! Thank you for giving to the Lord in this way!

A Note From Randy Smith

This past Sunday was a remarkable day of celebrating the independence God has blessed us with as a country; a freedom won on the backs of our nation’s heroes. We have many men and women in our congregation who have served, or are serving, with valor. It was an uncommon privilege for us as a congregation to highlight one such individual, Bill Colwell, whose service is representative of the many. After 17 years of faithfully serving “His Cornerstone” class as its teacher, Phil Brown stepped aside from that position this past May. We want to express our gratitude to him. The following is a portion of the letter that was sent to him from the Adult Sunday School Department and the Ministries of Christian Education: "In recognition of and appreciation for your many years of service to Denver First Church through your ministry of teaching the His Cornerstone class, please find the enclosed gift card. From many quarters you have been heralded as a dedicated and unusually gifted teacher, providing not only stimulating messages but also a variety of outstanding guest speakers over the course of time. May you find favor in God’s sight as you find avenues for continued service to our Lord."

When shopping, would you find yourself in the Container Store or World Market?

When heading out on a trip, would you find yourself carrying a backpack or a suitcase?

When listening to music, are you more likely to listen to Johann Sebastian Bach or the Jonas Brothers?

As varied as our choices might be, so are our talents. In a few short weeks Crocodile Dock Vacation Bible School will be running full force at DFC. Our kids will be enjoying a smooth ride in a flat bottom boat along the bayou because many folks, all with various God given talents, have responded and offered to lead songs, help children assemble crafts, prepare snacks, teach Bible lessons, and more.

We still have a need for people who are considering serving during Vacation Bible School. Why not stop by the Hot Booth this Sunday and speak to Sue Washburn about volunteering. The Hot Booth is located in the hallway that encircles the Sanctuary and is near the Breezeway.

Families who would like to register their children for VBS can do so online or in person this Sunday at the Adventure Zone registration table. Crocodile Dock is specifically designed for children Age 4 through 4th grade and will begin on Monday, July 27 and run through Friday, July 31 at DFC. Activities and classes will begins at 6:00 PM and end at 8:30 PM each evening. The cost is $5.

We can hardly wait for Crocodile Dock to begin and are eager to hear our children sing the assurances found in Hebrews 11:1 and Psalm 33:4.

Board Update for July 10th

There is still a desire to protect certain members of the candidate's family and congregation from hearing rumors. I know in our excitement to become acquainted with this person, it is easy to get ahead of ourselves. There's no need to perpetuate hearsay as the whole process will unfold within the next few weeks. Here's what the Bible says in Proverbs 12:23 ...

A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.

Let's please continue to show prudence in the handling of anything we might hear. Again, this is not an attempt to stifle the excitement surrounding this magnificent event God has arranged. It's simply a reminder to be responsible custodians of whatever information might come our way. I'm sure you would agree that the last thing we would want to do is grieve the one who will potentially be our next Senior Pastor by interfering with the timing of when information is shared with certain friends or family members. Thank you so much for your cooperation in handling this situation appropriately! We have much to look forward to in the days just ahead!

And have you observed that our Father is always active in preparing us for what lies ahead? The first chapter of the book of James highlights this point. In it, James points out in verses 13-14 that our Father uses trials while the Deceiver uses temptation. God has a way of putting difficulty between us and that for which we have a passion. As we press through the difficulties, we are often faced with opportunity to take a path of lesser resistance. But we also have the option of depending more deeply upon our Father and going forward. If we choose this "higher path," the reward transforms from that which we thought we were pursuing to the greater reward of intimacy with Him.

Thus, in verses 2-8 James reveals that the trials we face with our hand in our Father's develops a trust in Him that is unshakable. It leaves us "not lacking anything." This refers not to us being self-sufficient but wholly sufficient through God. Our faith in Him has been tried in the most difficult of circumstances, and we can confidently ask for what we need without doubt when the need arises. Friends, let us seek with our whole hearts that place of solid footing where we are utterly dependent upon Him and rest in the knowledge that He will see us through every situation.

A Note from Randy Smith (7/10)

On Wednesday of this week, a team of us joined together and attacked the Annex (DFC’s warehouse) and conducted a house-cleaning of major proportions. As we filled three roll-off dumpsters with all kinds of items that had lost their usefulness, chapters of DFC’s ministry replayed in my mind. This whirlwind of frenetic purging was sandwiched between two, by contrast, more grounding experiences—an early-morning meeting with a man who so desperately aspires to overcome the pain and devastation in his life to become surrendered to God’s will, and an evening session with the men of Celebrate Recovery, so vulnerably giving voice to the challenges and triumphs of becoming godly men. The day served as a living metaphor, underscoring the necessity to keep The Main Thing the main thing as we distinguish that which is corruptible from that which is not.

The Price of Freedom

Acts 22:28: “...With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.”

Freedom for us, which began on July 4th, 1776, came at a very high price. Of the fifty-six men who signed the Declaration of In-dependence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war and five were captured & imprisoned. Several lost their wives and children or their entire family. One of them lost all thirteen of his children. All fifty-six of them were victims of manhunts and were driven from their homes. Twelve had their homes burned. Seventeen of them lost everything they owned. Yet, not one of them defected. Yes, a great sum was paid for our freedom. Free-dom that we too often take for granted. Let’s celebrate & thank God for America and those that paid a great price for our freedom.

Much attention this past week has been focused on Orlando, Florida, where the Church of the Nazarene has held its quadrennial General Assembly. Three new General Superintendents were elected: Dr. Eugenio Duarte, Dr. Stan Toler, and David W. Graves. These three replace retiring General Superintendents Dr. Nina G. Gunter, Dr. James H. Diehl, and Dr. Paul G. Cunningham. Dr. Jesse C. Middendorf, Dr. Jerry D. Porter, and Dr. J.K. From time to time during those four years, however, I was privileged to work with you either in a District Assembly or a special event at Denver First Church of the Nazarene. Can you imagine it for a moment? You are living life on the street. You have your sleeping bag, your backpack, the clothes on your back—and that’s about it. In your backpack, you have a toothbrush, a bar of soap, a small mirror, a pair of clean socks, a small New Testament, a pen and a little notebook, some photos of those you hold dear, and a few other odds-and-ends. Everything you own, you carry with you. But, wait: suppose you had no backpack! Now what? That was the question that troubled Mission:Denver volunteer Bruce Timnick. So, he set about to round up some backpacks. He contacted the Children’s and Youth Departments of DFC and made an appeal for used backpacks. About 45 were donated. These were distributed to people in desperate need at Mission:Denver this past Saturday by volunteers like Kay and Jerry Hammett. So…let’s see…we have Bruce…the children and youth…Kay & Jerry…all playing a part in improving one significant part of life for 45 people living on the streets of Denver. And, of course, none of this would have happened had not Lanny York responded to the call to meet these kinds of needs in the first place. It takes all of these individual efforts pooled together in service to the Lord for the miracles to happen! THANK YOU TO EACH WHO HAS PLAYED A PART! God bless you!

Just watch! Sunday mornings…East Foyer…just like clockwork, Joann Miller shows up with bags of goodies. For Joann, a part of her ministry (she’s on the First Impressions team of greeters) includes providing cookies and coffee each Sunday for all those who come through the doors of the East Foyer. Thank you, Jo, for your over-the-top faithful service!

It was said by the civic leaders of Orlando, Florida, that, out of the thousands of conventions and conferences they have hosted throughout the years, no group has ever come to the city asking, “What can we do for you while we’re here?”, until the Church of the Nazarene came this past week for its General Assembly. And DFC’s youth were central in working to make solid contributions to those in need, having adopted Orlando as their Sr. High missions project for 2009. Thank you, youth, parents, and sponsors, for making a difference and for serving as ambassadors for the King of kings.

A Tribute to Jerry Nelson from Dr. Diehl

Dear Dr. Jerry,

In 1989, my life took a “square-corner turn” when I became the Senior Pastor of Denver First Church (DFC). Then I had the privilege of working with you weekly in staff meetings and every Sunday morning and night in worship services. During those years, I learned that you are much more than a music professional; you are a tenderhearted, Spirit-filled man of God with a passion for people of all kinds. You love people! Dorothy and I will never forget those special four years we were privileged to minister alongside you, Michael and Denise Cork, and more than 150 others who were involved in the ministry of music at DFC. Those are wonderful memories!

Many times when I finished preaching, I called you and Michael to the platform, and you knew just what to play and sing as the Spirit guided you. You have a God-given sense of “Knowing what is right” for the situation which has blessed so many across the years. Of course, I was also “sanctified proud” of you in a number of General Assemblies when you were asked to play the piano in front of 20,000-30,000 Nazarenes from around the world. I was always pleased to say to others, “Jerry is from the church I pastored in Denver!”

Congratulations to you and Rachel on your retirement from full-time ministry at Denver First Church. You will never retire, but you will be ministering in many other places, touching the hearts of men, women, youth and children with the gifts God has given you.

May the blessings of the Lord go with you as you enter this new phase of heartwarming ministry to honor and glorify our Lord, Jesus Christ!

Sleeping Bags + Backpacks + Bibles = Summer Camp at Golden Bell

You will get the opportunity to have fun in all of our fun activities created for kids your age: swimming, climbing wall, funyaks, mini-golf, crafts and more! (Horseback riding is also available for an additional fee.)”

The dates for this upper elementary age adventure are Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 10, 2009. Boys and girls - If you haven’t secured your spot yet, don’t worry. We still have space for you. Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Much attention this past week has been focused on Orlando, Florida, where the Church of the Nazarene has held its quadrennial General Assembly. Three new General Superintendents were elected: Dr. Eugenio Duarte, Dr. Stan Toler, and David W. Graves. These three replace retiring General Superintendents Dr. Nina G. Gunter, Dr. James H. Diehl, and Dr. Paul G. Cunningham. Dr. Jesse C. Middendorf, Dr. Jerry D. Porter, and Dr. J.K. Warrick were re-elected to complete the board of six superintendents to preside over the denomination for the next four years.

Mark Graham honors Dr. Diehl in his Holiness Today Magazine article titled "This One and Only Journey":

"What does Jim Diehl envision for the future of his church? 'Keep the fire burning,' he booms. 'The Church of the Nazarene has a biblical doctrine, an excellent form of government, wonderful facilities, and gifted personnel. But all of the good things we have don't make any difference if we lose our passion to win the world for Christ and to lead people on to the sanctified life!'"

In his acceptance speech Tuesday, Dr. Eugenio Duarte, a native of the island of Brava in the Cape Verde Islands and the first-ever citizen outside the USA/Canada region elected to the Board of General Superintendents, said, "This is what being a missional church gives you." Later, Duarte told the crowd, "[Since] I have been a part of the Church of the Nazarene, it has always been the case that the church teaches me how to serve. That's all I know. That's all I came to do."

In Max Lucado's book No Wonder They Call Him the Savior, he recounts the story of an encounter with a venerable farmer several miles outside Rio de Janeiro when Lucado was a missionary there. After Max told Senhor Jose about his vocation, the old man surprised Lucado by remarking, "Your job must be pretty easy." When Max inquired why Senhor Jose would think this, he responded that it was very easy for him to believe in God having witnessed what He had done every year on his little farm.

The simplicity of the old farmer's ability to see God so clearly when all the "stuff" was out of the way got me to thinking. Are we so impressed with ourselves and our accomplishments that God's magnificence is stifled? I mean, all of our man-made trinkets pale in comparison to God's simplest creation (see Luke 12:27). But we tend to be quite impressed with ourselves. So much so that we see God through the filter of our own expectations. Since these expectations put God into a very small box that we can understand, His glory is minimized.

Witness what happened when Jesus encountered such small-mindedness in the story in Mark chapter 2 of His encounter involving the religious elite and the paralytic lowered through the roof. Notice Jesus responds to the faith of those who struggled to get before Him, not by initially healing the physical ailments of the paralytic, but by forgiving his sins! Because their faith was great, Jesus did the greater thing. The religious elite, however, wanted to see Jesus do something in the physical, i.e. heal the man, to gauge whether He had any authority. Jesus tells them they were more impressed with the easier thing!

Am I quick to share the latest news, but slow to share the Good News? As Dr. Diehl said, we have to keep the main thing the main thing. We must roll away all the stuff and let our Father shine. By being passionate to reach people with the Good News, lives like Dr. Duarte are transformed to make an eternal difference! And that's what it's all about!

Dear Family and Friends of DFC,

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

At DFC, testimonies happen! On Sunday morning, as I was making my rounds through the Children’s Dept, Youth Dept, the east & west foyers, the adult SS classes, a person handed me a slip of paper. On it were these words: “I am a work in progress. In me is the victory of God’s mercy.” This woman has attended DFC for four years, and for most of that time has been in Celebrate Recovery. She shared with me the good news of how many years she now has “clean and sober” on a variety of fronts.

Isn’t this more like what Dr. Bob spoke to us about on Sunday? Instead of speaking negatively, to use our breath to bear witness to God’s faithfulness in our lives?

There is strong humility in the recognition that I have not yet attained all, but rather, “I am a work in progress.” And there is celebratory surrender in the pronouncement, “In me is the victory of God’s mercy.” Sound theology, that! This young lady’s testimony is more closely aligned with that of Charles Wesley—“O for a thousand tongues to sing my Great Redeemer’s praise!”—than with the din of the noisome, noxious world in which we live.

Friends, let’s use our breath to sing a new song…today…to the glory of the Father.

Here is the packing list for all youth going on Albuquerque Missions...

ALBUQUERQUE MISSIONS 2009 PACKING LIST o Back pack with sack lunch for Sunday lunch;

and bible and pen; pillow for travel

o Sleeping bag (twin air mattress is optional)

o Suit case with following:

_Toiletries

_Two towels

_Light Jacket or hoodie

_Work site appropriate clothes for four days:

shorts no shorter than three inches above

knee, no tank tops, no sagging (bring clothes

that can get paint on them)

_Closed toed shoes (requirement for work site)

_flip flops or sandals

_Swim suit (one piece for girls or colored shirt to

cover swim suit at all times if you do not bring one

piece)

_pajamas

_Sun screen

_Flashlight

_spending money - suggested amount $40-$60

We will have a shopping experience in Santa Fe

_camera (optional)

CELL PHONES: We will allow cell phones, however they will not be allowed at work site in morning or evening bible school times. Adults will be very clear as to when they are to be used.

ELECTRONICS: No Ipods, MP3 players, DVD, CD players, game systems or lap tops allowed including for travel. Please do not bring headphones for your cell phones.

The Board has considered the candidates presented by the Search Committee, selected a candidate, interviewed that candidate, and voted with one abstention and 14 in the affirmative to present this man of God to our congregation with an enthusiastic endorsement! “Kotchadoingood!”

Kudos to Jerry Storz and to all of you who have volunteered to serve in “Crocodile Dock,” DFC’s 2009 VBS ministry. For the first time in DFC’s history as we know it, this summer’s VBS ministry will be completely run by volunteers! It is designed to be a strong outreach ministry to children, so please get the word out! Invite your neighbors, coworkers, as well as your in-laws and outlaws! The VBS classes will happen Monday through Friday, July 27-31, from 6:00-8:30 pm.

As we approach an upcoming pastoral vote in July (see the Board Update from Vini), it’s appropriate that we pause and express appreciation to the Church Board of 08/09 and the Pastoral Search Committee. The Board led us through some difficult days and met a record-setting number of times. The Search Committee, beginning with a list of more than 100 candidates, did yeoman’s work in completing the task that was set before them. Through prayer, conducting interviews, on-site observation, and other means, they brought the principal pastoral candidate they believe God has for DFC to the Board for recommendation. As members of DFC’s congregation, let’s be diligent in expressing our appreciation to the individuals and their families for the hundreds and hundreds of hours they have contributed in service to God and to the ministries of DFC.

Hats off—once again—to the West Campus. This past Father’s Day Sunday, they had 134 in attendance! Rev. Marvin and Cenida Suyen, we rejoice with you in how God is expanding His kingdom through your dedicated service to Him!

A Note from Rick Brown to Church Leaders

I love your church and it is filled with Spirit. The reason for this short note is that in my prayers I wanted to lift up to you, as our leaders, the people involved with your van ministry. I am 46 years old, healthy and so on, but in Feb. 2009 I was laid off. My car was broke and I could not afford to fix it. I came into contact with George Elliott.

George regularly picked me up so that I could praise and worship our Father. Everyone in the van ministry should be thanked and recognized for their difficult and many times thankless job. Please take a moment to recognize these people in a small way in your services, if possible. They all are a very good and dedicated part of your ministry and I just hope that you will take a moment to show all of the church’s appreciation for their service.

A Note from Michael Cork to Jerry Nelson

I met Jerry in the recording studio in Nashville for the first time in 1978. He had arranged several of the songs on our album and was playing the piano for the sessions. When he walked into the studio, I noticed a splint on his third finger and I wondered how in the world Jerry would play the piano. After the first song I quit wondering. That was the beginning of a 30 year professional and personal relationship.

I enjoy hearing Jerry play solos, but more than that I enjoy having him accompany Denise and me as we sing duets and solos. We have never worked with anyone that makes it so easy. Jerry knows how to make music making into a team effort. He knows when to lead and when to follow. Come to think of it, that is probably how he has lasted 36 years in one place.

While there were great moments of making music in the studio late into the nights, and hours of rehearsing, the best times were moments in worship when we left the run sheet and let God take over. With Jerry on the piano, I knew where ever we needed to go, he could get me there. Most times I didn’t even have to tell him what song to go into; he would follow my lead and often already knew where we were going. Once I gave him a title of a song in the middle of the service that he didn’t know…I just started singing and he played it as if we had rehearsed it.

Music was just part of what we shared. Meals, and planning sessions, and Super Bowl parties and large conventions and weddings and funerals. I have watched Jerry in times of sunshine as well as difficulty and sorrow and have always seen him as a faithful man of God. Even now that we have been gone from DFC for 8 years, we have worked together here in California on three separate occasions as I have introduced him to my new congregation.

I know as Jerry “retires” he isn’t at the end of the song, he is only changing keys.

Jerry, thanks for your friendship and your example.

DFC Quiz Team Travels to the Sunshine State

When most kids travel to Florida, the thought of meeting Mickey Mouse and taking a spin in the Teacups stirs excitement and anticipation. Such thoughts are only a portion of the all that is bubbling up in our DFC Quiz Team members because on Saturday, June 27, 2009, the DFC Quiz Team will be participating in the World Bible Quizzing event in Orlando, Florida. Our church has six children who have qualified to take part in this event. Our Red Level participants (Grades 1 - 3) will be quizzing in the morning and our Blue Level participants (Grades 4 – 6) will be quizzing in the afternoon. Please pray for these children as they gear up and face challenging questions about the book of Exodus. Pray that their minds will be sharp, their nerves will be calm and that the Biblical teachings that have been embedded in their hearts will be naturally shared with others.

The purpose of the Children’s Bible Quizzing Program is for children to develop a solid Biblical foundation and to become immersed in God’s word. Our DFC Quiz Team meets on Sunday afternoons during the school year and is open to children in grades 1 – 6. The DFC team leader is Gwenda Rakes. If you would like your child to participate in this program next fall, please know that your child is welcome join the team.

It is exciting to know that our DFC kids have embraced the assurance that “The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.” Exodus 15:2 NIV

Board Update for June 26th

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
There are rare moments in life where you know you will look back on them and remark that they were pivotal points. One such period in the life of our church is upon us! The Board has considered the candidates presented by the Search Committee, selected a candidate, interviewed that candidate, and voted with one abstention and 14 in the affirmative to present this man of God to our congregation with an enthusiastic endorsement!

This has been an exhaustive, prayerful, meticulous search process. And you have been very patient. But I cannot overstate the confidence we have that the diligence has been worth every ounce of effort invested to seek the connection God wanted us to make. This person has been lauded by everyone from General Superintendents to District Superintendents, professors, co-workers and fellow pastors with whom we have discussed his merits. And, most incredibly, the Lord had begun to speak to him about DFC even before we approached him with the request to allow his name to be considered! The evidence is very visible that the Spirit of God has gone before us during this whole process.

I'm sure there are many questions in your mind at this point. And I'm certain you would like more information and details. While we on the Board are not in any way being coy nor are we desirous of withholding information from you, there are still several details we cannot reveal just yet. It is our intent to honor the candidate's wishes to protect his current congregation until we are two weeks away from his personal visit to our congregation. This will not be until after General Assembly, and there are a few other scheduling conflicts we must work around as well. Please continue to grant us forbearance in making the timing appropriate and accommodating for all involved.

Meanwhile, let us continue to prepare our hearts and lives to be fertile soil for the Holy Spirit to use. We have the opportunity for personal, intimate growth in our relationship with Him. During these few remaining days of transition, He will continue to speak to each of us about that of which He is passionate. We each have a set of talents and abilities He has given us for the express purpose of glorifying Himself. Spending time in reflection on how He has uniquely wired me and the things and circumstances to which I am sensitive will reveal much about His heartbeat in me.

My goal must never be Christ-likeness but an intimate relationship with the Father through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. If I attempt to simply learn about Jesus and mimic his actions, I miss the entire point of why Jesus became Emmanuel. It's all about restoring us to a thriving relationship with the living God. Let us spend each moment of each day aware of the immeasurable gift we've been given and become so close with the Father that others can see Him every place we go!
