As readers will notice of late, I’ve been pointing to some great new web projects and companies created here in Ireland as part of being involved in the Tuesday Push. “The Tuesday Push” is a great concept pushed by Damian Mulley to promote Irish web products across a varied list of Irish blogs and ultimately to a wider audience.

The “Push” for today is that initiative’s own new website ( http://www.tuesdaypush.com ). My product 1time was fortunate enough to be the second company blogged about by the members and we got some good exposure amongst the Irish audience.

Main thing is check the site out and find out how you can get involved!
http://www.tuesdaypush.com/

You can also follow the new posts on twitter
http://twitter.com/tuesdaypush

As a suggestion for the site; That standard Wordpress template needs a new header image with a Tuesday Push logo in it.

I just started using the software very recently. I’m involved in business social networking in the form of LinkedIn, Forums, Twitter and Blogging.

Where does IGOpeople fit?

What does it offer that other products don’t? (That can be either socially or in feature offering.)

In their own words;

“IGOpeople is a network for the real world, one place online where you can stay connected with the people, groups and organisations who matter to you.

Once you’re connected, you can use the network to start and join in conversations. You can have conversations with friends, groups, organisations you deal with or the wider IGOpeople network.”

I’m very impressed with the way the product is laid out and how “conversations” work. I signed up a few days ago and I have already been involved in a good few discussions. Right now the Irish tech scene has taken to it the way they have Twitter. IGOpeoples big challenge is to bridge that gap between the earlier adopters and “the real world” as they put it.

I think from the outset its a very ambitious project to take on with so many established players on all sides of what they offer but I have to say what they have done so far is as good an attempt at it as could have been expected. The foundations are great, I just think they now need to move forward and understand where there nichè is and really focus on it.

This project has the potential to really put Ireland on the map in Social Networking.

Check it out for yourself.

Damien Mulley has started a great initiave called The Tuesday Push.
While this has prompted me to post about PutPlace (Online backup and storage), it is a service I’ve been meaning to post about for a while.

From the various hardware mishaps over the years, one thing that has struck me square in the nose is just how fragile digital information is. Any important document that you store in just one location can be lost forever and it is quite likely it will be if you leave it there long enough.

We can all make a conscious effort to copy our files daily to backup disks or USB drives but in the busy hectic world we live in this invariably doesn’t happen.

This is where PutPlace comes in. It offers two key features, it backups all my data and gives me access to this information from multiple locations. More importantly it does this without me having to press a button or open my file browser as it happens seamlessly in the background anytime I’m connected to the internet from each computer I own. If I need a file and I’m not on my own machine I can just login to the web interface and download the file from there.

I was lucky enough to be on of the private beta testers and anyone can now sign up to there public beta. This is a very powerful tool that I have already used sharing files across different computers. The day I’ll really appreciate it is when one of those computers decides to eat all my files. The insurance of knowing that those files are safe is what makes me love it now.

Over the past 4 years I’ve come up with my own idea of what works in terms of design. I came across this post on Bokardo.com’s blog.

His premise is that Art and design are two different things and that a designer should know the difference. I agree completely and I have to say that the 5 principles of design as he puts it mimic my own thoughts on the subject.

I can’t claim to always abide by this rule myself because when you get caught up in a project you stray from your ideals for different reasons. In a lot of cases you forget about them for a while but when you do apply this one, I think you end up with the best solution for the end user and that’s the most important thing.

“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

I’m hearing way to many good things about the Mac to ignore it anymore. I’m at a stage were I’m thinking of buying a new Laptop for home that I can use for doing a bit of work (Web application Development). I’ve never used a Mac properly at all. When I was younger the reason I wouldn’t buy a Mac was because I couldn’t use some of the more popular software that was only available on windows.

I think I’d like a Mac once I got used to it, my question really is will windows Vista be good enough to keep me using it instead? What to do, what to do …

Very interesting statistics were published on the World Internet Usage Statistics and Population. From this table it shows that only 15%! of the world uses the internet which is surprisingly low. When you consider Asia alone has over 50% of world’s population it starts to make more sense given their low adoption rate. This combined with Africa which has an expected low adoption rate of less than 3% really lowers the world average.

Taken from Read/Write Web -Worldwide Internet Penetration is just 15%

From a business perspective I can see a lot of business plans referencing to the strong growth in Asia and companies expanding their services and language versions to accommodate these countries. There appears to be an opportunity to focus on this market with a long term view to grab the huge population yet to embrace the internet the way we have in the west. Surely the likes of China and India will eventually have internet adoption closer to 50% of the population. Japan for example has a very good internet adoption to match the US and some countries in Europe.

I didn’t spot any exact figures for Ireland but maybe someone can point me to another resource so we can compare and contrast with the rest of the world. From a personal point of view I wonder how closely those percentage adoption rates correlate with business internet adoption rates in those countries.

I say for the CEO or Manager but in reality these could be used by any worker looking to be as productive as possible each day. I, for one, find myself looking more and more at information or news sites from RSS feeds etc., as of late. This time, while valuable for keeping up to date with what is going on my industry doesn’t really drive my business forward. So with that in mind here are two little tools that will help you be more productive each day.

TaskBlase is a small windows app that hooks into outlook. Basically you set a task that you want to do and click start, when you get that task done press stop and repeat. Each of these tasks and time spent on it is summarized in your outlook calendar. So if you use a timesheet application like 1time your can easily update your timesheets. You don’t need to be using a timesheet application to find value in it.

I think it helps you set a task and just focus on that task until its done, like upload document A, finish review document C, create logo, reply to client X etc., or even bigger tasks like life sustaining client work. I have to say in principle its a good little app but its very rough around the edges. I think it could integrate with the task bar instead of being a stand alone app. For me anyhow I had problems moving the app around the screen, useful all the same though.

The next one is a FireFox extension called TimeTracker; a very simple extension that records what time you spend browsing each day. In the options menu you can filter work related web pages and at the end of the day you’ll see how much time you have wasted looking at other websites. It is pretty amazing and somewhat depressing all at once. It works really well though.

I find them useful anyhow and while I sometimes forget to start the TaskBlaze the Firefox TimeTracker is very useful. I think competing with others in the office to have the least amount of wasted time might be the most effective, well for the competitive ones anyhow.
