Dubai Gold Souk is a traditional market (or souk) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The souk is located in the heart of Dubai’s commercial business district in Deira, in the locality of Al Dhagaya. The souk consists of over 300 retailers that trade almost exclusively in jewellery.

A trip to the Gold Souk truly demonstrates why Dubai has earned itself the title City of Gold. It’s worth visit even if you have no intention of buying, just to soak in the atmosphere of shop windows glinting with 18, 21, 22 & 24 carat gold, showing-off the abundant riches of this part of the world.

By some estimates, approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk.

Twitter Having New Profile Design Now…

The profile redesign for the Web version of Twitter is now available to all. The social media site unveiled the new look earlier this month, and in the intervening weeks has been rolling it out to select users of the service.

The new three-column layout makes more use of the screen space and comprises a new photo-centric design which’ll look familiar to Facebook and Google+ users.

New features include ‘best tweets’ where posts that have gotten the most engagement will show slightly larger, making it simpler for others to find your best content; ‘pinned tweet’ that allows you to pin one of your favorite tweets front and center for visitors to, as Twitter puts it, “see what you’re all about”; and ‘filtered tweets’ that lets you choose which timeline to look at when exploring the profiles of other Twitter users.

Twitter to change its layout like Facebook design update

 Twitter will begin rolling out its new profile page design in the coming weeks, and the redesign already appears on certain celebrity pages.

The redesign, which makes a user’s profile page look very similar to Facebook’s design, will come with a larger profile picture and header image, and will showcase the user’s most popular tweets. Users can also pin their favorite tweets to their profile page. Twitter’s mainstay, its main feed that lists new tweets in chronological order, will remain unchanged.

The redesign is immediately available to new users and has been applied to certain celebrity profiles.

The update will only apply to the desktop version of the service and not to smartphone or tablet apps, which are the most popular ways the service is used.

Another new feature is a filter that visitors to a profile page can use to view tweets: original tweets, tweets plus replies to others, and tweets with photos or videos.

The redesign is another attempt by the social media company to increase its user growth, which has been sluggish. In February, the company said it had 241 million average monthly users in the fourth quarter, a slight increase from the previous quarter.

Google has reportedly planned to open up its first retail store situated near an Apple store in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.

According to Mashable, Google plans on opening an 8,000-square-foot retail location at 131 Greene St. and speculations are rife that the store could also be across the street from eyewear company Warby Parker, which at one point was rumored to be helping design frames for Google Glass.

This is reportedly a bold move for Google to open up a store in such a high-profile neighborhood and suggests a greater shift into hardware, including Google Glass and its Chromebook laptops.

This, however, is not the first time Google is entering into brick-and-mortal retail as the company already has physical Android stores called ‘Androidland’ in Australia, Indonesia and India.

However, any fix dates for the inaugural of the Google store have yet not been declared by the web giant.

Recently, Apple is granted a camera-related patent among 31 other published patents.

This new patent is designed to deliver iOS devices with add-on and swappable camera lenses to offer optical functions such as lens zoom, anti-shake and autofocus.

iPhone photographers are usually stuck with built-in lens of the smartphone. But with this new technology, the iPhone back panel will be removable and owners can easily swap lenses similar to mirrorless and DSLR cameras. With this patent, Apple has also raised the possibility of a panel with two different built-in lenses at the opposite corners. Basically, with the two lenses, users can switch to the telephoto lens or a different filter by flipping the panel around to use the additional glass.

Although the iPhone camera has gone a myriad of improvements over the years, there is a limit to what type of optics can be incorporated to the iPhone given the limited space provided to achieve a multifunction and ultra-compact camera. The solution that Apple might be eyeing is swappable lenses. As such, we might be seeing a magnetic ring mounting point at the back of the iPhone, allowing accessories with three swappable lenses on a pinwheel to be attached.

The concept is pretty radical and we might not see this feature with the iPhone ever, but then again there is no way to say for sure. Either way, this patent is an indicator that Apple is interested to innovate its devices, which is good news for everyone who uses their iPhones as their primary cameras.

Customers in the UK only need to wait until February to get their hands on the curved G Flex phone from LG.

The Korean firm has partnered with mobile network EE to make the 6-inch bendy handset available sometime in February – although the exact date and price have not yet been announced.

LG officially unveiled the G Flex phone in October, after months of rumours and speculation.
The device is vertically curved so it moulds more comfortably to a user’s face and gives improved voice and sound quality by reducing the distance between a user’s mouth and the microphone.
It also claims the vertically curved shape increases the sound level by three decibels, compared to flat smartphones.

LG additionally announced the device has a so-called ‘self-healing’ case made from an elastic coating capable of ‘recovering from daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks.’
However, the firm did not explain how the coating ‘heals’ itself, just adding that the case keeps the G Flex ‘looking newer longer.

LG announced at the start of October it had finished work on the 6-inch flexible OLED display now seen on the G Flex phone.
It is made from plastic substrates, rather than glass, and this gives it flexibility as well as making it unbreakable.
The phone also has a curved battery, developed by LG’s research arm LG Chem.

Other features include a 13MP rear-facing camera with a timer that uses the Rear Key to show a countdown has started.
The QTheater tool gives users quick access to photos, videos and YouTube from the lock screen.

Google working on Robot Technology Development…

Google has bought seven robotics companies in recent months as part of a strategy to develop its own robots that can be used for warehouse, manufacturing and delivery work, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

The report said that Google had placed Andy Rubin in charge of the project. Rubin is the highly regarded executive who led the development of Android into the world’s most widely used smartphone software.

Google has long been committed to investing resources in ambitious technology projects that are not directly related to its core search software. Recent examples include the development of driverless cars and high altitude balloons to provide broadband access to remote areas.

The company usually develops new technologies in its Project X experimental unit. But in a sign of how advanced Google’s robot project is, Rubin’s unit functions as an independent division in the company, the New York Times reported.

The report appeared just days after web retail giant Amazon.com detailed its plans to develop a fleet of autonomous drones that would be capable of delivering packages weighing up to 2.5 kilograms to customer homes with 16 kilometres of its distribution centres.

Rubin told the paper that the project was being developed with a 10-year vision of bringing the project to fruition. He compared its success to that of Google’s self-driving cars.

“The automated car project was science fiction when it started. Now it is coming within reach,” said Rubin“I feel with robotics it’s a green field. We’re building hardware, we’re building software. We’re building systems, so one team will be able to understand the whole stack.”
