Faculty Focus - Hsiao-Yun Chu: Touring the History of Design

A class taught by Hsiao-Yun Chu is a virtual world tour of design, from history to product design and development. The Design and Industry assistant professor considers herself a guide-not an expert-leading a fun experience.

Chu's newest tour involves nearly 1,400 linear feet, the size of R. Buckminster Fuller's personal archive. This semester, students are engaging in a typesetting project of Fuller materials, on the heels of Chu's first book, New Views on R. Buckminster Fuller (Stanford University Press).

As the Fuller archive's assistant curator while attending Stanford, Chu grew interested in Fuller's self-taught, innovative design and utopian, visionary viewpoints. Fuller's geo-dome, she notes, came decades before today's green movement.

To Chu, design is about people more than the products. One of her class projects brings students to San Francisco teahouses. "Tea is Significant in so many cultures;' she says. "It involves taste and rituals but also the shape of the cup and how it is decorated.

"When you design something, you want it to have meaning to the people who use it;' Chu adds. "The relationship to that object can be very rich:'

"THIS SEMESTER STUDENTS ARE ENGAGED IN A TYPESETTING PROJECT OF FULLER MATERIALS, ON THE HEELS OF HER FIRST BOOK, NEW VIEWS ON R. BUCKMINSTER FULLER (STANFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS)."

Designer of Florabella:MSL Design Martin L. New Florabella Lounge Collection Receives Nightingale Award at Healthcare Design 09

New Florabella Lounge Collection Receives Nightingale Award at Healthcare Design 09

We are delighted to announced, Florabella was honored this week at Healthcare Design 2009 in Orlando with a Nightingale Award. The Nightingale Awards, sponsored by Contract Magazine, and The Center for Health Design recognized excellence and innovation in healthcare product design. Each year, a jury of design professionals review entrants based on the following criteria: Contribution to the healing environment, Functionality, Quality and durability, Aesthetics and style, Pricing, and Sustainability/Innovation.

This year a total of five products were recognized, and Florabella was one of only two seating products to receive an award.

About Florabella

Brandrud’s Florabella lounge collection brings Healthcare performance to the lounge seating
category, setting a new standard for the Healthcare market.

The visual language of Florabella is derived from a classic archetype – the barrel-back. Its form embraces the user and visually connotes comfort. It’s a perfect fit for Healthcare where users are often emotionally and/or physically compromised.

Florabella responds to issues of infection control, durability, and sustainability via integrated features such as a floating seat, steel framing, and material shifts at areas of high wear. A desire to reduce the spread of infections in Healthcare public spaces, lead to the development of a floating seat, which prevents dirt or fluid build-up and associated bacteria growth around the perimeter of the seat – a typical problem in ordinary lounge seating. Execution of a floating seat required a complete rethink of conventional lounge construction for Brandrud, and drove a new and innovative approach with Florabella.

Consideration for the demands of high-wear Healthcare public spaces resulted in material selections that are optimal for sustained durability and maintenance. Damage to interiors and furnishings in waiting areas is high due to frequency of vacuuming and harsh cleaning chemicals. Molded Urethane legs provide a level of wear resistance and durability appropriate for Healthcare public spaces. Resilient pads in key touch/wear points reduce and absorb physical wear, while also providing a visual cue for cleaning areas of high touch.

Florabella was designed according to Herman Miller’s Design for Environment guidelines, using environmentally considerate materials and production processes. Florabella is designed to be easy to disassemble for recycling and re-use. Florabella does not contain PVC and uses a soy-based foam. Florabella was developed by Brandrud and designed by MLS Design, a San Francisco-based design consultancy and long-time design partner of Brandrud.

Designer of Florabella:
Mandel Communications Internship Offer: vBlueprint™ Tutorial Development Project

Mandel Communications Internship Offer:
vBlueprint™ Tutorial Development Project

Background
Since 1983 Mandel Communications has been training and coaching business professionals to become expert communicators inside and outside their organization.

In the business world people are engaged in crucial, high stakes interactions everyday:
• Pivotal conversations with executives
• One-shot presentations to key decision makers and influencers
• Sensitive, high level sales calls when major decisions hang in the balance
• Building new trusted advisor relationships and re-building relationships when things go wrong

Too often, when everything is on the line, the best ideas lose because they are poorly communicated. That is an extraordinarily costly fact -- for the individuals involved and for an entire organization. Mandel Communications helps clients become profoundly successful at capitalizing on these high-leverage opportunities.

We don’t teach "about it." We train and coach people so they can be experts at "doing it." Our goal is always behavior change that is sustainable over time.

For additional information: www.mandelcom.com

Internship offer
Mandel Communications is offering an internship opportunity for a student to develop an on-line tutorial for a new virtual learning tool that is currently being launched into the marketplace. Please see a description of the project below.

The student would work closely with a senior Mandel executive who works from her home office in Oakland.

This project
Mandel teaches a methodology for crafting clear concise messages and organizing content for meetings and presentations that frequently becomes the default communications model across our client companies. The model is call the Mandel Blueprint©.

An internet-based version of the model is currently being launched and sold to Mandel clients as a virtual reinforcement tool to promote sustained usage of the methodology. The tool has been built in Adobe Flash and is hosted by an external company that also manages the user licenses.

The process for training new users has been via on-line meetings with a trainer – about an hour process. This is not scalable over time. An on-line tutorial is needed for new users and as a reference source.

The goal is to complete this project by December 31, 2009.
The tutorial format is yet undetermined. It could be as simple as PowerPoint slides with screen shots and added text – or something slick and exciting using current freeware or lower budget production technology. An audio instruction option may also prove to be ideal.

The content is already outlined in a Help file for the tool and notes from the synchronous training that has been conducted.

Proposed project steps:
1. Define the project goals
2. Research: locate and review existing demo and tutorial options, and latest technology options
3. Scope and define the deliverables
4. Create a project plan
5. Create the tutorial
6. Test with users
7. Refine

Qualifications
• Excitement about the opportunity to create something that will be used globally
• Enrolled as a student at SFSU.
• The ability to both work independently and take direction
• The ability to understand and think from the user’s perspective and needs
• At least a basic knowledge of PowerPoint – more is better
• A good design sense would be ideal
• The ability to write clear, simple, concise instructions

Credit Potential
If you are interested in the possibility of receiving unit credits for this internship, please contact your advisor.

Design Internship with 826 Valencia

826 Valencia, a nonprofit focused on providing one-on-one educational opportunities for San Francisco students, is seeking design interns for the current semester. Though unpaid, this internship with a nationally recognized nonprofit will provide invaluable, on-the-ground design
experience. Interns will work with 826's Design Director on projects ranging from creating simple signage, event materials, and promotional materials to producing student chapbooks.

826 Valencia is a vibrant work environment, bustling with staff, interns, students, and volunteers. Our design staff is incredibly supportive and willing to teach and assist. By the end of the internship, designers will have gained skills in both design and navigating within a professional,
nonprofit work environment.

Requirements:
* Minimum commitment of at least16 hours per week for at least three months
* Proficiency with CS3 Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop required; experience with web-based programs such as Flash and InDesign plus
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

New Leaders Graphic Design Internship: Fall 2009

New Leaders Graphic Design Internship: Fall 2009

For 26 years, Earth Island has been committed to mentoring young, emerging environmental leaders and the vision that a nimble, streamlined organization can make possible the work of bold individuals with big ideas.

In October 2009, we will host the 10th annual Brower Youth Awards, North America’s top prize for bold, young leaders. At the event, we give 20-page print programs to all 900 attendees, and decorate the space at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco with posters and design elements.

We’re looking for a design intern to work with us intensively through early October to create the design pieces for our 10th anniversary celebration. We estimate this project to be approximately 50-80 hours of work. Our design pieces will go to the printer on October 5th, so all work needs to be completed by that date. This is a great opportunity to build your portfolio as well as create a product with a large reach!

We will have additional opportunities to continue providing design support to the Brower Youth Awards, if intern is interested, beyond October 5th.

Job Description
As an intern, you will work with our New Leaders Initiative, in the exciting process of acknowledging bold, emerging, young leaders in the environmental movement via the Brower Youth Awards. You will be exposed to some of the leading grassroots and national youth-led efforts to remedy an ailing planet and have the opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of working in an environmental non-profit.

Qualifications
Strong design skills and ability to drive a project independently. Interns should be resourceful, with the ability and desire to take initiative and follow through projects until completion, as well as able to articulate needs to the supervisor.

Benefits
You will be interacting with some of our nation’s most dynamic young activists. Hone your people skills, organizing tools, web skills and get your feet wet with one of the best youth environmental organizations out there. Our internships are unpaid, but we provide a monthly transportation stipend of up to $100, depending on transit needs.

Interested?
Digital Arts, Graphic Design and Animation Intership (NASA Ames Research Center, Mountain View CA)

UARC Systems Teaching Institute
INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
NASA Ames Research Center (Mountain View CA)

20 hrs per week during academic year (flexible)
Fulltime during the summer, Total 6mos – 1yr appointment

Job# MCT 1.0

Position Description: Digital Arts, Graphic Design and Animation
NASA's Mission Control Technologies (MCT) project seeks a student intern to help create illustrations, animations, or prototypes of human-computer interface designs, to better communicate those designs to the developers and potential users of that software. The designs are currently documented in text with a few static drawings, some rough paper prototypes, and some storyboards. The intern will work closely with the user interface designers. The media could be computer animation software (e.g., Flash), static pictures arranged in sequences (e.g., PowerPoint, web browser), or even (and sometimes ideally) physical pieces of paper that are moved around manually. This internship is part time work at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field (near Mountain View) for six months or longer.

Desired skills:
It is desirable for the candidate to have more-than-average experience in using computer software in general (not necessarily programming it); this will help the candidate to fill in the blanks of the designs without requiring highly detailed directions from the designers. Appropriate backgrounds could be human-computer interaction, any design discipline, commercial or fine art, or computers.
This position is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Application Deadline: Open until position is filled
Applications must include the following:
Prof. Martin Linder & DAI Graduate Chris Morlock of MSL Design Introduce New Collection of Health Care Seating for Herman Miller

<img class="float"src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3543/3841584030_a5dbcaa37b_m.jpg" width="196" height="240" alt="Florabella Tear Sheet " />Professor Martin Linder and DAI graduate Chris Morlock of MSL Design introduce a new collection of health care seating for a Herman Miller Company.

Florabella, the new healthcare line from Brandrud (a Herman Miller Company), has redefined performance in the healthcare environment.

Healthcare furniture has created many new challenges for furniture design. Long waits, tense situations, and a sense of vulnerability pervade the experience. Hospital acquired infections are a major issue facing healthcare providers.

Florabella is next generation of healthcare furniture that addresses this infection control issue. Materials such as food, liquids, to hair can easily be trapped in traditional designs, cannot easily be cleaned, and becomes a breeding ground for pathogens.

MSL has approached the problem with a series of innovations. A clean-out gap that goes all the way around the seat that allows that ‘stuff’ to fall through to the floor where it is most likely to be cleaned up. This is accomplished by utilizing an engineered steel frame that creates the structure of the chair and suspends the seat in the middle. This design and frame also create incredible strength – allowing Florabella to handle bariatric loads, and have the increased durability required to work in the healthcare environment.

Beyond these attributes, Florabella also includes replaceable wear points. These are more durable, cleanable and easier to replace. Florabella’s replaceable wear points include the hands and feet of the chair because they must withstand mops, vacuums and all the other traffic that will bump into the chair over time.

A 25% recycled bio-foam covers the entire tubular metal frame providing environment advantages while bringing comfort, warmth, and a sense of security back into the Healthcare environment.

MSL’s extensive client list in the field of furniture design include Metro Furniture (a Steelcase company), Design America (a Knoll company), and Brandrud (a Herman Miller company.)

Professor Hsiao-Yun Chu in DAI Department publishes book on R. Buckminster Fuller "New Views on R. Buckminster Fuller" (Stanford University Press, 2009) edited by Hsiao-Yun Chu, Roberto Trujillo

A serious scholarly look at the work of R. Buckminster Fuller is long overdue. This volume takes a broad historical view, discussing Fuller and his work in the context of larger social and cultural patterns. Fuller is a common thread in a critical cultural history that shows him to be both a participant in and a product of his times. By placing Fuller and his work in a historical framework, we arrive at a much richer understanding of both this self-made polymath and his times.
How do I become a DAI Major?

DAI majors must have junior standing and have passed the JEPET exam. A GPA of 2.5 is required to declare this major.

There are three required core prerequisite courses that must be completed with a GPA 2.5 average in order to advance into the DAI major. Those courses are:

DAI 370, Colloquium

DAI 323, Visual Design Literacy

DAI 356, History of Design and Technology

Of these, DAI 370 is the most critical course to take in the semester before declaring the DAI major. It contains a thorough introduction to the major and the various options of programs of study.
