here a a few of the main changes/improvements in snow leopard (source pcworld.com):

1. Annotations in Preview. New tools enable you to annotate and markup PDF files using Preview. The annotation tools include comments, links, highlighting, strikethrough text, shapes, text, and arrows.

2. Restore deleted items to original locations. This seems long overdue. In Windows data restored from the Recycle Bin is automatically restored to its original location. With Snow Leopard restoring to the original location is now an option on the Mac as well.

3. Sortable search results. Snow Leopard adds the ability to sort Spotlight search results for more efficient searching. You can sort search data by name, date modified, date created, size, type of file, or label.

4. Nearby printers. When printing Snow Leopard displays the printers that are detected nearby, enabling you to identify and configure the best available device for printing your document.

5. Automatic update for printer drivers. When a printer is connected Snow Leopard connects to the Internet and downloads the most current driver for the device. Snow Leopard also periodically checks via Software Update to ensure that the most up-to-date driver is installed.

6. AirPort menu signal strength. Connecting to the best available wireless network is easier with Snow Leopard. The menu bar item for AirPort displays signal strength for all available wireless networks so you can choose the strongest possible connection.

7. HFS+ read in Boot Camp. Users who use Boot Camp to dual boot between Windows and Mac now have support to be able to share data between the two operating systems and access files from the Mac partition while running in Windows. The functionality is read-only to ensure that any Windows-based viruses can not write malicious software or data to the Mac files.

8. Improved 64-bit support. Snow Leopard extends the Mac’s support of 64-bit hardware. Key system files and applications have been rewritten in 64-bit code, and the Mac OS is now capable of accessing significantly more memory.

9. Cisco VPN support. One of the cooler updates for Snow Leopard is built-in support for Cisco VPN connectivity. Cisco VPN’s are common in enterprise networks and now Snow Leopard users can connect securely with corporate networks without needing any additional software.

10. Exchange support. Last, but not least. The ‘piece de resistance’ of Snow Leopard which arguably makes it more enterprise-ready even than Windows 7: Snow Leopard has native support for connecting with Exchange. That’s right. No need for Entourage. It makes Microsoft’s announcement to include Outlook in the next version of Office for Mac a little like shutting the barn door after the horses escape.

Navigon europe(€79,99):

Starting up Navigon in my iPhone3G takes a long time. at about 30sec this was the first thing that really botherd me about it. after entering a route it calculates it REALLY fast and bring is up navigation sceen in an instant. While driving with navigon you can still listen to your favorite music over bluetooth A2DP and when it says something about a new direction to go to it just turns down you music a little bit which is great!!

Now my biggest problem with the version I tested (they’re working on some issues now)! When I was driving along and listening to my music and navigating to wherever someone decided to call me. No problem at first just pick up the phone and talk over bluetooth. BUT after hanging up the phone Navigon was closed and I had to restart the app all over again. wait 30 sec etc… this is something I hope they will work on. but overal I just loved navigon!

Pro’s:
-fast calculating of routes
-play songs while navigating
-turning down a song when directions are given.
-price is cheaper than TomTom
-alarm when speeding
-driving lane assistance!!

Con’s:
- only one voice available
- after a call you have to restart
- restarting takes too long!!
- no speeding camera’s included (yet)

TomTom Europe (€99,99)

TomTom is possibly the world leader in navigation, and by making TomTom 4 iphone they made a huge step into the right direction! allthough the first thing thar really bothered me was the price… a hundred euro’s!!! for just a few bucks more you can buy a standalone TomTom. hopefully they will lower their price soon.

But… back to the usability test. After starting up TomTom it was clear that starting up this one goes a lot faster than Navigon… at about 12seconds. When arriving in the mainscreen it’s clear that TomTom thought about the usability of the iphone. the use scrolling nice and big icons and a clear way to navigate through the menu! entering a route takes up a little more clicks than it does at navigon and calculating the route takes longer too.

After the route is calculated TomTom just works as it’s always done… everything you want to see in your screen is there… remaining time etc. While driving with TomTom I can’t help it to get the feeling that the GPS doesn’t work as well as with navigon. sometimes TomTom has trouble knowing which road I am on. Almost directly after driving my first time with TomTom I got a call from someone… and after hanging up it got me back to the main screen (at least better than closing the App) I would love to see the navigation go on while calling someone!!!!

While playing music TomTom pauses the number when voice instructions are given… I’d rather have them do it by turning down the volume of the number a little.

Pro’s

-multiple voices
-clear instructions on screen
-navigate to contacts

Con’s
-pause number on voice instruction
-no driving lane assistance
-GPS not alway exact
-Price
-No sound-alarm while speeding

Conclusion

Both App’s are very good and work great on the iPhone… although the price is a little high I am sure it’s worth it’s money. Personaly I would stay with TomTom for just a few main reasons… the speeding camera’s and the fact that is doesn’t close the App after a call!

Still the choice will be up to you which one you like best! good luck!!
