Tonight, I’m spending some time cleaning my books, and getting all of the press releases out of my in box. One I received is for a new magazine about sexuality and excess called Design Book Magazine. This is a bit like Wallpaper but slightly raunchier and not as good… but still very interesting. What’s really great about it? A higher concentration of women in bikinis in their architecture spreads. I do like to see how people interact in these spaces!

I received this email about a year ago, and just never had time to post this. Sandy Lam has created an ingenious system. The pieces of furniture are built into the floor of a terrace and easily slide up to create a table or a bench. This is the perfect furniture solution for people who have minimal space, and don’t want their precious room to be cluttered with furniture all the time. This is essentially on-demand furniture.

This is not necessarily a new idea. I think the first time pop-up furniture comes to mind is in my grandfather’s bass boat. On this vessel, the seats popped up out of the floor. However, I really have not seen such a simple and useful device as Spaceless for some time now.

The current trend is over-the-top baroque furniture, and this piece focuses on spartan utilitarianism. After this simple idea, though, designers my be inspired to rethink possibilities with concealed furniture.

There is nothing terribly smart about creating furniture around a charging station. It’s just that it needs to be done. So often we designers design for how we lived our lives twenty years ago and not for how we live our lives now. The Bedford Smart Recharge Station recognizes your needs: pay bills, hold the mail, store notes, charge your stuff. If I had one of these simple pieces of furniture I would now have hours of my life back that I spent searching for where I’ve put my phone.

I’ve always wanted to make an enduring statement that would have broad popularity, and now I think I’e found a way: First, buy one of these stylish umbrellas of a middle finger. Second, walk around with this umberlla often. Third, find your picture on Google Maps. Finally, send the image to any media outlet that will listen. The one catch is that you have to use the unmbrellas on clear and sunny days, so you might look like a freak.
