Darcel Disappoints
Cynical Darcel is a semi-autobigraphical character developed by Rinzen co-founder Craig Redman. The highly followed blog covers everything from inconsequential solitary moments to inappropriately intoxicated action at crowded launch parties. Art, shopping, dining, boozing, aspirations and anxiety all fall victim to Darcel’s monocled purview. ‘Art’ follows Darcel’s movements through the artworld, from disdain to rapture we see our hero traverse the world’s most prestigious and exclusive showings.
Redman has exhibited his art at, most notably, the Louvre, Paris and has worked with high end brands such as Louis Vuitton, The Nowness, Nike, Apple, Vanity Fair and The New York Times.

1. I have archived much of my life through collected objects.

2. I am moving to a smaller studio, making it necessary that I get rid of a lot of these objects.

3. I will do so by using them as the raw material for one enormous collage you can literally walk inside of, created inside a 30-yard dumpster.

4. Oh, before I build that thing, I am going to catalogue around 500 of these objects by photographing them and recording a few words about its history.

THIS YEAR I WILL TRY NOT TO was born out of frustration, complacency and laziness. Most designers are seduced by design trends. They’re easy to appropriate, and even easier to imitate. The challenge is to innovate. To be new. We decided the best (and most enjoyable) approach was to identify and document the most common trends we felt we had to avoid. Before long we found ourselves with a checklist of DON’Ts and a new aim:

to try to be new. We may fail, but we will try.

Being a Scots fellow born on the doorstep of the birthplace of this fine golden dram, I was almost brought to tears over its delivery.
We overlook the the role of story telling when discussing brands but it has a great deal of significance in alluring customers. The truer the story, the more compelling the brand and the closer our relationship to it.
When designing, (in particular for packaging) researching a products history, or where its from or local yarns or even tall tales may lead to interesting solutions for the name, the packaging, the design.
And... GO SCOTLAND!!!!

Looking for inspiration for a class assignment, I found this awsome annual report on type press by Nicholas Frenton.

Nicholas Felton spends much of his time thinking about data, charts and our daily routines. He is the author of several Personal Annual Reports that collate countless measurements into a rich assortment of graphs and maps reflecting the year’s activities. He is the co-founder of Daytum.com, a site for counting and communicating daily data, and frequent designer of information graphics for numerous corporations and publications. His work has been profiled in publications including the Wall Street Journal, Wired and Creative Review.

Most commonly though, Timba is known for founding one of the world’s art communities best kept secrets…Wooden Toy Quarterly: the only quarterly boogazine (half book half magazine) that comes out once per year, and proud of it! Wooden Toy is not only a publication worth collecting for its design alone, but for its aim to document and highlight emerging and established creatives that have in some way been influenced by contemporary culture, design and art while drawing in the creatives that Timba thinks can be, and are, an influence or inspiration to others

I personally had de honor to meet Timba Smits last week when he was invited as a guest lecturer at Shillington College Sydney where I'm a curret student. And later then at the lauch of issue 7 of Wooden Toy Quarterly next day here in Sydney, too.
