Vibrant Paint Patterns Brighten Up Beirut's Urban Landscapes

Dihzahyners is a team of artists who strive to create a more bright and beautiful Beirut through colorful public art. Specifically, Paint Up! is an ongoing project in which teams of artists gather together and decorate the city, one step at a time. The group says, "We realized that we could add energy and vigor to our city by simply painting certain locations that needed it—and where else to start but with the stairs?"

So, on a regular basis, the creative team ventures out into the city of Beirut and transforms a bland, concrete staircase into vibrant geometric patterns and energetic rainbows of color. With an enthusiastic team, dozens of paint cans, and lots of dedication, the staircases can be completed in a full day's work. One of the largest completed projects was a 73 step design in the Mar Mikhael district of Beirut, which took seven hours to complete.

The basic designs are planned out ahead of time and the final results are a complicated pattern that enhances the monochromatic urban landscape.

The Right Angle Stapler

Mystifying Illusions of People Walking Sideways on Walls

These black and white figures are so realistic, pedestrians might be mystified when they pass by this wall mural by Norwegian stencil artist Anders Gjennestad. Also known as Strøk, the artist utilizes all kinds of visual tricks, including distorted perspective and strong shadows, to produce illusions of people walking sideways on walls.

Strøk's canvas is often rusty metal, wooden palettes, gritty walls, or shiny glass, that interact with his subjects. This particular piece was recently completed on a wall in the city of Porsgrunn, Norway. According to the artist's bio, "His hand cut multi layered stencils create photorealistic imagery, with depth and detail that is complex, tactile, and mentally engaging."

Playful Recreations of Classic Paintings on Toast

Food artist Ida Skivenes, better known as IdaFrosk, pays homage to the great painters of yesteryear with her playful food creations. The Oslo, Norway-based artist works particularly with toast as her canvas for her aptly titled series The Art Toast Project. The food paintings that IdaFrosk creates work with an assortment of ingredients that maintain a healthy diet.

From vegetables and fruits to various nuts and cheeses, the crafty artist utilizes every grocery item she can get her hands on to produce her whimsical creations. They are minimalist re-imaginings that capture the essence of each classic painting she is reproducing. IdaFrosk has already covered everyone from Van Gogh and Picasso to Pollock and Monet, with no present intention to stop.

Paper LED Torch Light

Japanese designer Kazuhiro Yamanaka rolls up paper with battery operated LED to create an ample illumination source. When a user gyrates the sheet into a cylindrical form, the slit contained within the parchment extrudes inwards, automatically powering the LED attachment via two thin hidden switches. as soon as the volume becomes flat again, the light shuts off.

Togo Burger: Folding Cardboard Fast Food Tote

How cool is this? Seulbi Kim, a student at Rhode Island School of Design, created this “Togo Burger”, a folding cardboard carrier that allows fast food to be transported with one hand.

Unfortunately, the carrier only appears to be a concept at this point – which means the fast food juggling act must continue.

Creative Rolling Pins

Joanne Choueiri, Giulia Cosenza and Povilas Raskevicius, Students from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam have created a set of roller pins called Rollware that allows users to create decorative and edible dishware.

The rolling pins include lazer-cut shapes and patterns that allow the user to construct different sized plates and bowls in various designs . The result can be used to served food and eventually eaten afterwards. The sustainable products merge traditional crafts, tableware production and cooking with digital technology. Cool!

Astonishing Hyper-Realistic Scenes Made With LEGO

Nathan Sawaya (known to many as ‘The Brick Artist’ these days) is the ingenious sculpture behind some of the most impressive LEGO works you’re ever likely to see. He paired up with the award-winning Australia photographer Dean West to collaborate on the startling exhibition In Pieces. It was a project that spanned many years, but their hard work, dedication and sheer patience as produced some astounding visuals.

Together they conceptualise the story and West then dramatically photographs the scene. The twist comes when Sawaya mischievously inserts his hand-made LEGO sculptures ‘somewhere’ into the photograph itself. The duo traveled around America shooting scenes in a variety of locations from Nevada to Utah, from New York to California.
