Last night’s final Design Miami/ Design Talk hosted by W Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Stefano Tonchi, Crossing Lines, brought together fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra, interior designer Rafael de Cardenas, and product designer Patricia Urquiola. The talk participants explored the intersection of design, architecture, and fashion while also delving into the unique aspects of each discipline.

“I think the boundaries are becoming more and more blurred,” Patricia Urquiola, who has designed for Kartell, B&B Italia, and many other notable companies, stated at the start of the talk. “The society we now live in encourages more crossover than ever before.”

Joseph Altuzarra, a protégé of Marc Jacobs and former designer for Proenza Schouler and Givenchy, talked about the ways in which architecture, and Rem Koolhaas in particular, had inspired his fashion designs.

“What fashion design and architecture have in common is an emphasis on how design interacts with the body.” He went on later to note that a person’s design choices coincide with their life experiences and that people often choose to wear things that “remind them of the past.”

After Tonchi pointed out that most of the work of interior designer Rafael de Cardenas was different from the other panelists in that in involved no production and was more like the work of an artist, de Cardenas discussed his approach with new clients. “I’ve been asked to do something shabby chic, so I’ll say, ‘Sure! Let’s do shabby chic!’ but then I give the client something very different. Sometimes you have to subvert what the client wants—it’s a game of psychology.”

Urqiuola went on to explain how different it was for her to make a chair for a company like Kartell—drawing a comparison to a chair that was introduced at Salone del Mobile two years ago and is still not available for purchase given the complicated aspects of the chair’s production.

Moss Gallery has seen a tremendous amount of action in their booth so far this week. In fact, all 100 pieces from the Morphing Fruit Platters 1D Series 300 at the fair have sold. There are actually 1,000 variations in the series and Moss is now taking advance orders for the other 900 that are yet to be produced. Each plate is numbered and is sold with a DVD showing the animation of the morphing designs. The plates go for $700 a pop. The twelve pieces in their booth from the HyperSurface series will set you back a little more. Beans which is photographed below goes for $45,000.

Audi’s installation at Design Miami/ entitled Urban Future was created by the Copenhagen-based design firm BIG. It’s the type of exhibition you need to experience in action. This video provides you with glimpse.

The 190 m2 three-dimensional LED installation provides an interpretation of the future city where the public space is shared between pedestrians and driverless cars. The entire surface would be infused with a continuous flow of information allowing for real-time interaction between vehicles and their environment. Mounted above the Design Miami installation, 3D cameras track the movement of passers-by processing the data into a generative artwork that feeds back into the LED panels.

“Our pavilion for AUDI renders visible the invisible forces that flow through our city – the driverless car is relying on sophisticated sensory and computational technology that constantly observes and calculates the dynamic space that the living city constitutes. The result is an architecture of movement whose forms have not been predetermined by the architect but are constantly being recomposed by the people populating the pavilion.” BIG

By allowing the unexpected to happen, Jeff Zimmerman harnesses every glass blower’s greatest fear—imperfection—and turns it into master craft. Cultured magazine reports.

Jeff Zimmerman likes to describe much of what he does as drawing. It might seem like an odd choice of words for a virtuosic glass blower, but in many regards, it is the perfect way to characterize Zimmerman’s ever-evolving output.

His custom light fixtures—sinewy brass vines studded with pearly glass orbs—are line drawings cutting through space; his tear-shaped iridescent light fixtures, arranged in splash-like shapes on the wall, are vibrant 3D abstractions; and his crumpled glass vases are so perfectly dented, twisted and deformed they look like they could only ever exist on a deftly-drawn sketchbook page.

At this year’s edition of Design Miami/, Zimmerman will show an arresting and immersive new body of work. R20th Century, Zimmerman’s New York-based gallery, has installed a 320-square-foot standalone room within the confines of their booth. Zimmerman has hung about 50 oblong glass “tears” from the space’s 12-foot ceiling, each at varying distances from the ground. Viewers are invited to enter and (carefully!) navigate the landscape, which, powered by the 25-watt light bulbs installed within each iridescent piece, exudes a soft, ambient, almost otherworldly light. Zimmerman has other objects, lighting elements, and installations on view at Gallery Seomi in Seoul, South Korea, and at R20th Century’s Tribeca flagship through the end of the year.

Jeff Zimmerman in the Studio (Photo Credit: Sherry Griffin)

For some time now, the Brooklyn-based craftsman has worked diligently to expand the practice of glass blowing itself, pairing his carefully honed (and virtually unmatched) skills with an artist’s eye for shape, space and composition. The son of cermacists, object-making was more or less in Zimmerman’s blood. He trained in the classical Venetian technique at the Pilchuk School in Seattle and, early on in his career, fabricated glassworks for fine artists like Maya Lin and Kiki Smith. Zimmerman has also dabbled in performance art—he founded a group called the B Team with R20th Century’s Zesty Meyers. Their act was sheer spectacle—on par with the Blue Man Group, but grittier, edgier and—we kid you not—chock full of splattering, oozing and gravity-defying molten glass.

It’s a way of working that continues to permeate Zimmerman’s practice today, as seen in both the ways in which viewers will navigate his ethereal Design Miami/ installation and the sort of experiments he embarks upon to develop the techniques themselves. Take those elegantly crumpled vases. “When you’re learning how to blow glass, that’s an accident that every glass blower is trying to avoid,” Zimmerman says. “And I thought, why are you avoiding it? It’s just the coolest thing. These kind of experiments allow the process to be a part of the final result.”

In Basel this past June, Galerie Marie Wettergren participated in our On/Site program with a show dedicated to the work of Astrid Krogh. Her work with illuminating optic fibers stopped fairgoers in their tracks.

Galerie Maria Wettergren is participating in our U.S. show for the first time this year and is presenting new work by Krogh. At Design Miami/, you can experience IKAT III, a 6 meter long unique wall piece. Krogh graduated from the Danish Design School in 1997 and is one of the first textile designers to mix high-tech materials such as optic fibers with traditional textile techniques.

IKAT III By Presented By Galerie Maria Wettergren At Design Miami/ 2011

“She anchors her designs to new technologies by weaving lengths of optic strands on a loom into iridescent tapestries that glow and illuminate into a rainbow of brilliant colors. The fibers are connected to monitors that radiate colored light into the weaving at a slow, hypnotizing pace. An incessant flow of color is constantly changing the appearance of the piece,” explains Gallery Owner Maria Wettergren.

Galerie Maria Wettergren is also showing pieces by Mathias Bengtsson and Ditte Hammerstroem.

The gallery is showing Bengtsson’s new silver version of Cellular Chair made this year. The 3-D print epoxy chair is designed by a computer program that Bengtsson created that replicates the way cellular bone structures form. This is the first chair in a limited edition of twenty unique pieces. All of them will have their own DNA. From Ditte Hammerstroem are pieces such as Bunch of Boxes, a hanging cabinet of lacquered boxes; and her latest work Out of Focus from 2010, a chair consisting of multiple chairs that blend into one.
