The newest Department of Tourism Slogan, “It’s more fun in the Philippines”, was recently launched. It’s goal is to promote Filipino tourism locally and abroad.  Below is the official logo:

The Good

• It’s easy to understand
• Modern looking
• Banig Weave techno pattern
• Designed for social media participation

The Bad

• Wordy
• Same slogan used before by Switzerland Tourism
• Sounds inspired by a Rebecca Black Song
• Non-techie/ non-Internet savvy people may feel left out

Design

It looks like a web 2.0 logo targeting an internet-based audience. The colors and fonts are warm and friendly which match the message well. It’s very clean looking with a good amount of spacing. The closest font I could find similar at the moment  was Neo Tech Bold.

The banig weave icon was cleverly made. The digital pixel pattern may symbolize the Philippines’ technology base . I can imagine it being a  little hard to distinguish that it’s actually the shape of the Philippines specially for foreigners not familiar the country’s geography.

It’s certainly a a big improvement from the previously failed, Pilipinas Kay Ganda, campaign.

Twitter hashtag #ItsMoreFunInThePhillippines

The best part of this campaign was having social media in mind.  It gives any twitter user a chance to promote Philppine tourism by giving a reason  followed by #ItsMoreFunInThePhillippines hashtag in their tweets. Currently it’s trending worldwide. I bet this strategy alone will give this campaign most of it’s momentum.

Memes are starting to sprout everywhere which is a good thing. Memes are free viral marketing at it’s best.

Controversy

Forum members at Pinoyexchange.com discovered that the same line, “It’s more fun in…” was used by Switzerland Tourism in an older ad.

Some members cried, “Plagiarism!” while others said it’s fine since it’s an old ad anyway.

Username Orion Pax quoted:

“Its not fun when the Swiss beat you to a tourism slogan 61 years ago”

The line is super generic. Another poster replied that it was just a headline and not a campaign. Personally, I think this was just coincidence.

Conclusion

Compared to the old slogan WOW Philippines, it may be a little wordy but I really like it. It was well-designed and thought out. The banig logo was refreshing fonts and colors used were modern but friendly.

The inclusion of the social media angle was excellent. Overall I think Department of Tourism did a good job this time.

If you’re from the Philippines there’s a good chance you’ve probably already seen or passed by a wall with colorful psychedelic graffiti of dolphins on them.

This type of dolphin advocacy art was made popular by Filipino artist A.G. Sano. After watching a documentary about dolphin abuse he was inspired to paint 23,000 dolphins as his way of protesting against the violence on these creatures.

Everyone wants their own web page. More and more people want to learn how to create a website of their own. I’ve put up this guide about how to create a website to help others step by step.

How to Create a Website Guide

Planning

Before you learn how to create a website you need to know why you need a website. It doesn’t have to be perfect but you need to know where you want to go to get there. Have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish in the end. Sometimes you want to do so many things and nothing gets done. This is the first step of how to create your website.

Do you want to sell a product? Make a portfolio? Tribute page, hobby or community forum? Make a simple draft of what your end goal will be and everything will fall in place.

Domain name or your www .com name

The next part is choosing your .com name or domain name. Your domain name will be the your website identity. No two domain names are the same. Thinking up your domain is fun – weeeee! It’s just like naming your pet puppy or your first born child. Give your website a good name and it will be good to you. Choosing a .com is one of the fun parts of how to create a website.

For pinoy Filipino flavor buy a .ph or .com.ph at www.dot.ph.Take note, the price for a .ph domain cost 3x a normal .com though. For regular .com I recommend godaddy.com. They have good customer support.

Tip: do your best to make it simple, short, easy to remember and spell
Advanced Tip: a domain name has a big gravity on how you come up in search engines. Try to use a domain name that people would type in the search box

example: if you sell silver leather boots – > www.SilverLeatherBoots.com

Hosting

You need a computer to save all your web pages on the internet. This is where all your website files will be saved (web page html, images etc) and where your domain will be directed to.

Finding a good hosting provider is important. i suggest bluehost or hostgator. Uploading your html files and pictures are discussed in the final part of the how to create your own website.

Content and images

This is the most important part of how to create a website is the content or information you put into it. Your site can look like crap but if the information is gold, people will flood in. How valuable the information or product you share is what will make or break your websites. Make your words interesting and useful so visitors keep coming back for more. You can do this all on MS word or even jot in in a notebook.

Make your content useful and Intredasting

Tip: Sound like a human. Add some humor and your own personal opinions. Don’t try to sound too formal either.
Advanced Tip: Try to write in a search engine friendly way. That means include terms or words people will type in google search box. SEO is an advanced topic in how to create a website.

Learning HTML can also help in knowing how to create a website.  There are many internet tutorials just google: “html tutorials” without the quotation marks.

Web Design – how to create a website that is beautiful

You can start by drawing it on paper. Learning Photoshop is a big advantage also. Get inspiration from your favorite sites. Looking at good web design examples is a constructive part of learning how to create a website. Try not to add too many special effects because it will make it amateurish. The top websites on the planet have a super minimalist design and focus primarily on content (eg. google facebook youtube)For the coding you will have to learn HTML. Just take some free online lessons.

HTML - How to meet ladies

You don’t need to be a Leanardo or Davinci to learn how to create a website. Minimalist web design is favored over noisy design.

Tip: For the site structure follow common conventions. People look for logo on the top right and the menu either on top of on the left column.

Upload your files by FTP

You will need to transfer all your files to a computer server. I discussed this earlier about hosting. Filezilla is a free ftp program that does just that. Ask your hosting provider what your FTP settings are. This is usually the last step of creating a website. Once all your files have been uploaded, your pretty design and text should be up for the all the interwebz to see.

Let all your friends know you have a website. Tell them that you learned how to create website on your own. Call everyone in your phone directory. Send out emails, post it on facebook and tweet it. If it’s for business add it to your calling card, posters, stationery, flyers and all other marketing materials.

Everyone wants to be liked whether in personal life or business.  How much you are liked plays a big role in your success. You can be smart, pretty, rich and talented but if you are not likeable, you won’t get that far.

Social networking sites like Facebook virtually represents your reputation as a good or bad person.  Use this basic guide to get more likes on the web. This also covers social media etiquette in general.

1. Use your real name – don’t try to make your name sound cool or use Chinese characters ( specially if you’re not Chinese.)

5. Socialize – it’s not all about you. Have genuine interest in what other people are doing.
6. Share useful information. Broadcasting if your bout of diarrhea is getting worse is not useful to us.
7. Be positive. Being emo and whining constantly brings everyone down. It attracts bad karma for yourself too.
   
8. Spell check. Grammar check and don’t use Text talk. Jejemon is so 2009. How you talk and write reflects your intelligence.
9. Limit your status messages. Updating your status every minute is a form of spamming or flooding.
10. Don’t post vague messages only a few people in your contacts will understand. You can just send it as a private message.
11. Limit the number of pictures in an album. You don’t need to post 285 pictures of you posing in front of the bathroom mirror. 10-15 photos in one album would be convenient. Just choose your best shots.
12. Have a sense of humor. Funny is good and it shows your warm and lighter side.

Bonus tip:
Stop mass inviting people to play your games. As an act of courtesy ask permission before sending an invite. We have more important things to do than adopt your cow or fight a rival gang.

Written and shot in 24 hours in New York, the film follows a “young Filipino immigrant struggling to make it in the big city.” The assigned theme was “Exaggeration” and the surprise element was pizza.

Like most immigrants, they are very willing to give up certain luxuries and make sacrifices to build a life for themselves,” theater actress Cathy Azanza, who wrote the screenplay, said. “But, of course, their families back home worry. Out of love, they find that, at times, they have to get ‘creative’—just like the character played by Christopher (Fabregas) in the film—to stop their families from worrying.”

Dy said they chose to write the short in Filipino because they were “very conscious about making the film (tackle) what was close and real” to them. “At the heart of it, we just hoped we could tell a story people could relate to (with) a character people could feel for—no matter what language we used. More than a Filipino story, we hoped to tell a very human one.”

Dy and Azanza received a $4000 (around P170,000) cash prize, a one-year scholarship with the California-based Writers Boot Camp, and professional film and audio editing software from Sony Creative Software, reports Manila Bulletin.
