Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama by BFLS

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is Wales’ national music and drama conservatoire. An international architectural competition in 2007, radically transforms the original college building. The scheme now comprises an acoustically excellent 450-seat chamber concert hall (the ‘Dora Stoutzker Hall’), a 180-seat theatre (the ‘Richard Burton Theatre’), four rehearsal studios, an exhibition gallery (the ‘Linbury Gallery’) as well as generous foyer areas, a terrace overlooking Bute Park and a new Café Bar.

The new buildings are situated within the Grade I listed Bute Park. Directly across the road from the new building is Cathays Park, the civic centre of Cardiff, consisting of a number of important listed buildings.

Designed by BFLS, the drama building forms a new facade and the recital hall sits amongst the woods adjacent to the existing building. These elements are unified by a single floating roof. The new entrance to the college opens out on to stunning views over Bute Park and an arcade forms a new spine linking the whole functioning as exhibition space for the Design & Costume Department, whilst doubling as the ‘lungs’ for the scheme as its natural stack effect ventilates the public spaces. The building appears to be a single structure it is in fact three separate new buildings and a renovated existing structure. Each performance space has been conceived separately, the individual components of the building united under a single floating roof, its height determined by the theatre fly-tower. The drama building forms a new façade on North Road while the concert recital hall, clad with a timber screen consisting of light-colored cedar wood slats, sits amongst the park’s mature trees. Finishes of stone and timber create a sequence of warm and tactile interior spaces.

Hampden Lane House- Energy Efficient Small Home in Maryland by Robert Gurney Architect

Robert Gurney Architect designed the Hampden Lane house in Bethesda, Maryland. The client for this project was a young, forward thinking entrepreneur with no desire for a nostalgic or revivalist style house.

According to the architects, the client for this project was a forward thinking entrepreneur who wanted his home to be energy efficient and to occupy a small part of the property. The new building was designed as a cube, having 2,200 square feet and with spaces fully utilized. The flat roof provides an additional 1,100 sq ft of outdoor living space with views of treetops and the downtown Bethesda skyline. Instead of building a large house with pretentious ties to the rural past, this new house is smaller with a stronger relationship to the modern, urban area that Bethesda has become. The house is intended to be more site sensitive, environmentally conscious, and to provide comfortable, efficient living spaces.

La Grande Vue 5A – A Dreamy Sky-high Home by SAOTA

SAOTA in collaboration with OKHA Interiors designed the La Grande Vue 5A house in Cape Town, South Africa. This free form sculptural design comprising two apartments is located in Cape Town, South Africa.

Carla & Stefan Antoni have created a dreamy sky-high home that captures the feel of the sea below by using levels to spectacular effect. Their growing family is what forced the couple to demolish their bachelor pad and build a larger home. The result incorporates Stefan’s dual-level penthouse, including two en-suite bedrooms, a living area and a kitchen on the first level, a studio, third bedroom and garage on the lower level, and an apartment underneath. On the roof, is a swimming pool and terrace, as well as the magnificent SKY BAR containing a cocktail bar and entertainment area.

The result is a balance between the functional and the eye-catching, from white-leather sofas to ethnic pieces found on exotic travels. David Reade glass pieces sit alongside stacked cubic frames, together with cashmere throws and deep pile rugs.

Tri-Folds Sofa by Camille Paillard – Practical for Slipping in Magazines and Books or Hiding Items

Camille Paillard’s Tri-Folds sofa design plays with the folds in the armrests, “practical for slipping in magazines and books or hiding items.”

According to the designer: I like to mix common and unexpected to create new projects. During the workshop with the Swiss brand de Sede, I was able to work with and observe the leather, the material of choice for this manufacturer. For me, it was interesting to play with the beauty of the folds and the material’s innate sensitivity. I designed the sofa with this motif in mind in terms of the armrests. The folds are not only aesthetic, but also practical for slipping in magazines and books or hiding items. Based on de Sede’s choice of my design from the sketches and models submitted, I was able to develop a prototype. Over several months, I discovered the steps necessary to implement the project through regular meetings with the company. The design of the structure, the choice of foam and the material selection – everything enriched the project and made for a rewarding experience.”

Dream Home: House S by Atelier Heiss Architects, Vienna, Austria

Atelier Heiss Architects designed a contemporary extension to an existing house in Vienna, Austria. A drastic reconstruction preserving only the facade facing the street created a symbiosis of restraint and generosity. While the conventional design of the house on the outside seems almost anonymous, the open structure towards the garden speaks a modern architectural language. The interior design of the house gave birth to this new extension with the same spacious and warm characteristics. The overall layout is inspirational in more ways than one especially with the impeccable implementation of the house floor plans considering that the site became its primary restraint. At a glance, the exterior conventional design maintained a level of anonymity but the open courtyard speaks of modern garden architecture complementing the design rather than being an active part of it.

Modern Reception for Autistic Children Medical Center by Enter Architecture

Enter Architecture designed this interior project for a Medical Center for Autistic Children in Sydney, Australia. according to the architects: At 150sqm, the project was modest in its footprint but sets a clear example of digitally fabricated interiors, and a prototype to see how these projects perform. In early conversations with the client, priorities were quickly realized: 3 radiating treatment rooms, a central reception area, lots of play spaces, soft furnishings like beanbags and excellent visibility – all of which contributed to the genesis for the ideas and space planning that followed.

Colors play an important role in shaping our emotions and with this in mind, a fresh & neutral base pallet was chosen with bold color injections interspersed throughout. Known for its healing properties, a fearless orange shade was chosen for the back feature wall. Soft furnishings complemented the color scheme with playful Dinosaur design rugs and Fiocco “stocking” chairs by Busnelli.

KS Houseby Two in a Box-Architekten, Upper Austria

Two in a Box Architekten have designed the KS House in Upper Austria, Austria. The villa has three levels adapted to the line of sight and staggered towards each other on top of a basement garage. The main living floor is west-aligned and built at the slope opening up onto a garden and summer kitchen. In order to offer a free view of the city from the west-faced garden, the plan view of this floor was pushed to the northern end of the lot giving space for an elongated pool on the south side in front of the living and dining area. Front-mounted pool glazing allows for the horizon to disappear and the swimmer gets a feeling of hovering above the city.

The space of the house seems to flow inside and out as the large-sized stone panels continue from the interior to the exterior traversing the pool and merging all space into a single unit.

Modern Penthouse Interior Design in Bucharest by Studio1408

Designed by Studio1408, the Z apartment is located in a central urban neighborhood of Bucharest and spreads over 160 square meters. It is a two-story penthouse apartment that has been almost completely refurbished over the course of six months in order to fit the customer’s needs. The challenge of this project was to compose an apartment defined by an elegant and serious style, which was the requirement of the customer, without sacrificing the comfortable and cozy feeling every great home should have. In order to obtain these effects, our team decided to use glossy surfaces with sober colors – like the glossy beige living room furniture and the dark grey wallpaper, the shiny black kitchen cabinets – to contrast with the pronounced texture of the wooden surfaces, creating a very modern display. On the upper floor, we tried to create a comfortable set of living spaces by combining a modern lounge area with a generous dining area, a closed kitchen and a big terrace along the whole length of the apartment with great views over the city. The living / dining room is the core of the apartment, setting the mood for a social hub to use with friends and family. The lower floor of the apartment contains the private spaces for the family of three: two bedrooms, each with en-suite bathroom and storage space. The apartment also features a guest room which temporarily works as a home office.

House in Costa d’en Blanes by SCT Estudio de Arquitectura

SCT Estudio de Arquitectura designed the House in Costa d’en Blanes in Mallorca, Spain. Conceptually, the floors have been modulated with a 1×1 m. section, and this modulation is reflected in the composition of the façades, patterns of concrete slabs, carpentry and distribution designs. The first decision consists of inverting the situation level of the day and night areas, positioning the night zone on the ground floor and the day zone on the upper floor, where the views are better and there is more privacy with regard to the adjoining plots and allowing for use of the pool and solarium on the level where the daytime activity is generated.

Natural Materials Only for Villa V, designed by Paul de Ruiter Architects

Designed by Paul de Ruiter Architects, from the very start it was clear that the landscape around the villa should be preserved as much as possible. A basement was created for the house and the ground floor is semi-positioned in the slope of the hill. The first floor towers above the partially glazed ground floor and the undulating dune landscape. Both the northerly and southerly facades of the first floor are largely made of glass, while the easterly and westerly facades have a more closed character. The closed facade areas on the first floor are made of colored, sustainable timber.

Only natural materials have been used in the building! In fact, the wood used at the entrance and garage comes from an old ship that was found at a demolition company in North Brabant. Nice.

The glass areas on the ground floor and first floor have exceptionally large sliding components, with the moving parts in light oak. The details of the glass styles and the upper and lower lines have been kept to a minimum. The large glass facades ensure a connection between outdoors and indoors; contact with nature is tangible throughout the house. At the same time, the patio in the heart of the villa provides maximum daylight in all the rooms.

Modern Residence- El Caserón by G///bang

El Caserón is a modern residence situated in Zaragoza, Spain that was designed by G///bang in 2008. The project is about remodeling and expansion of an existing single-family house, located in a lot of 1000 square meters, in a residential district of isolated, single-family homes. The existing building was comprised of two parts. On one hand, a main body in the front area of the lot, 10×12 meters, with load bearing walls and Arabic tile roof (preserved), and on the other hand, a small attached volume, 3×6 meters, with a flat room (demolished).

The new structure contains the access hall, garage, gym, covered pool, children’s bedroom and a small apartment for the couple. It is a single story home with an interior garden that has been placed between the sleeping quarters to provide warmth and light. The circulation is L-shaped along the interior perimeter, but in the main volume, it is transformed into a multi-directional, flexible space that takes advantage of the mobility of the wood partition walls. The sliding exterior woodwork, large and embedded into the walls, cover the entire facade allowing a visual and formal connection between the dwelling and the courtyards and other landscaped spaces, eliminating the materiality from the interior-exterior transition.

Single Family Modern House- Casa Natalia by Agraz Arquitectos

Casa Natalia was completed by Agraz Arquitectos and it is located in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Configured for a family made up of the parents and an only daughter, the upper floor is in this sense different from others. There are only two rooms with atypical dimensions as for its spatial generosity, and a reading room, gymnasium and storage room that make up the most out of this small length terrain according to the client’s needs.

The interior is elegant and warm, with shades on the windows that allow for a charming play with light. The living and dinning rooms offer an extension with an intimate family room and a terrace that can be the perfect social place due to its transforming possibilities: it can be fused or isolated from the rest of the precincts according to the needs and has an independent entrance. The kitchen becomes the gravity center of the project giving service to the dining room as well as to the terrace, whereas the guest bathroom is located in a fair distance to give a comfortable privacy to its user. As a compliment of this houseplant, there is a guest room that is contemplated for the probable future dwelling of the house owners.

Amazing Dream Home: Edge House by Studio B

The Edge House was designed by architect Scott Lindenau and his team at Studio B Architects. The design team showed off their talents by creating a unique U-form style for this 10,000 sf residence. The program consists of a public zone, private wing, modern indoor swimming pool, and service wing. A wood ceiling and floor panels, along with a white wall interior create a large living area. Guests of this dream home enjoy a 270 degree view and ample sun. A bridge-like stairway links the home’s public and private wings, and the additionally the home’s entry opens to a sculpture garden, reflecting pool, and morning sunlight.

Contemporary Extension of a Traditional Stone House by Marià Castelló Martínez

Marià Castelló Martínez has designed a contemporary remodel and extension of a traditional stone-wall house located on the Spanish island of Formentera. While preserving the original building, new volumes were added around it, in full respect of the local architectural style of the 18° and 19° century, and with a limited palette of materials with which to exalt the initial aspect of the home. In fact the pillars and structure of iroko wood are original. Whereas in the interiors we rediscover icons of Mediterranean design such as the chairs by Torres Clavé and the lamps by Torres Clavé.

SF House by Studio Guilherme Torres

Designed by Studio Guilherme Torres, this 600-square-meter project planned was created for a couple and their two teenage children, in Londrina, Brazil, came through an acclivitous terrain allocated in three floors. The first floor, built at the street level, contains the laundry area which cannot be seen due to the span that forms the garage. Above the garage one can find the living area and the guest’s bedroom. The big wood brise indicates the stairway that leads to the house. On the third floor, you will find the bedrooms which face a vast terrace. The access to the bedrooms is through a long corridor, brightly illuminated by glass sealed slabs on the ceiling and walls. Light is this project’s main property. It is free, rich, abundant and generous.
